Audrey’s Christian evangelist roots are an open secret, but one that very few Indians are inherently aware of. In fact, isn’t just Audrey and her family that have Christian evangelist connections. The university she is employed by, Rutgers University, shares long historical connections with Christian evangelists and white supremacists that engaged in the slave trade of black Africans.

Why Uddhav Thackeray agreed to play second fiddle to Fadnavis

BJP-SS agreed to a seat sharing formula of 164-124 with SS accepting less seats. First time SS will be contesting less seats than the BJP in state assembly elections in MH. In 2014 they broke the alliance over just 3 seats and ended up winning half the seats that the BJP did.

Does anyone remember the name of Bengali leftwing scum author who used to write in rediff.com?

He choked on his dinner in one of the European countries and died few years ago.

He once wrote a rediff piece asking Clinton to nuke India after 1998 nuclear tests.

If anyone remembers the name and has links to the article, please post it. There are some deranged left guys who are spreading a lot of rumours on J&K. They are saying India is running concentration camps and expelling muslims etc. These scums have serious mental issues. I want to show to friends how these people operate.

His name is Praful Bidwai.

Old article but quite informative

this John Kenneth Galbriath guy has always been touted as a great friend of India but it looks like the rotten bugger had been telling lurid tales out of school.

John F Kennedy, his wife Jacqueline did not vibe well with Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi: Book

Kennedy also did not like Nehru's company while the First Lady Jackie Kennedy hated his daughter and future Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, calling her as real prune.

Sep 15, 2011,
WASHINGTON:

A new book has shown that late American President John F Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline did not vibe well with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi during their meetings.

When Nehru visited the US in November 1961, the then American President Kennedy called it as "the worst head-of-State visit" and considered the former Prime Minister's last days as "the town preacher being caught in the whorehouse".

Kennedy also did not like Nehru's company while the First Lady Jackie Kennedy hated his daughter and future Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, calling her as real prune.

However, the first couple loved reading cables from the then US Ambassador to India, John Kenneth Galbriath, as they were all piece of great literature.

"It's like the town preacher being caught in the whorehouse," John F Kennedy is quoted as saying about Nehru in his last days in power.

These nuggets of information about the views the first couple had about the two top Indian leaders is part of the the book, 'Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life with John F Kennedy'.

On day one, the book, which is basically the seven-part interview of Jackie Kennedy conducted in early 1964, was a number one bestseller on Amazon and Barnes and Nobles.

Referring to the 1961 US visit of Nehru, the book says that it was decided that the men would have their lunch in the dining room while Jackie would have the little ladies lunch in the living room along with Indira Gandhi, who was accompanying her father.

"Well, of course, she hated that. She liked to be in with the men. And she is a real prune--bitter, kind of pushy, horrible woman. You know, I just don't like her a bit. It always looks like she's been sucking a lemon," Jackie said according to the transcripts of the interview in the book.

Zowerlal Nehroog was indeed a hypocrite, preaching panch-sheel and moralpolitik while getting it on with Edwina Mountbatten in exchange for favours to Brit$hitistan. In the 1960s, Indira Nehroog was probably an entitled little snotrag with all the personality of a withered rectum. This is correct. Look up the writings of JFK's speech writer, Ted Sorensen's, comments about JLN. When JFK came into office in Jan. 1961, he held JLN in high regard because of India's independence time association with great world leaders. JFK wanted to discuss with JLN about events of the time, but quickly concluded that JLN was a duffer.

Quick Political question - Not sure if it belongs here. Please remove it.

One Govt. agency supposed to assist Govt. was asked to implement a large IT project to automate fund management system. One of the directors is guiding private companies to get his favorite company win the contract. He will get majority stake in that company. Not sure if reporting this to anyone can be useful. My concern is that this system will end up like GST in a failure. Wonder if anyone is afraid of the corruption fight that is going on? Babus seem to be fine with whatever they are doing. If anyone thinks reporting to right people will help, let me know.

Here is Milton Friedman's critique of JK Galbraith.
Criticism of Galbraith's work
Galbraith's work in general, and The Affluent Society in particular, have drawn sharp criticism from laissez-faire supporters since the time of their publications. Nobel-Memorial-Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman in "Friedman on Galbraith, and on curing the British disease" views Galbraith as a 20th-century version of the early-19th-century Tory radical of Great Britain. He asserts that Galbraith believes in the superiority of aristocracy and in its paternalistic authority, that consumers should not be allowed choice, and that all should be determined by those with "higher minds":

Many reformers—Galbraith is not alone in this—have as their basic objection to a free market that it frustrates them in achieving their reforms, because it enables people to have what they want, not what the reformers want. Hence every reformer has a strong tendency to be averse to a free market.
No wonder while JKG/JFK/Jackie did not get along with Nehru and IG. These white elite aristocrats do not want brown elite aristocrats to out-shine them. The feeling was mutual, I am sure, considering the sense of entitlement Nehru-Gandhi family have even to this day. The situation is not all the different with Kennedys or Clintons for that matter.

‘Maleeha Lodhi's Fatal Flaw: Her Son Is Married To A Hindu’. A quintessential South Asian expat mom, Lodhi says, “I want my son to marry a Pakistani Muslim. I’m very spiritual—it’s a critical part of me. One day, I want to go home.”

Maleeha Lodhi’s Fatal Flaw: Her Son Is Married To A Hindu

Maleeha Lodhi’s Fatal Flaw: Her Son Is Married To A Hindu

SEEMA SIROHI
OCTOBER 4, 2019

WASHINGTON DC: The reason Pakistan decided to name a woman beater, Munir Akram, as its permanent representative to the United Nations and unceremoniously remove Maleeha Lodhi from her post is apparently because her only son is married to a Hindu.

To be sure, this is one of the many reasons why Lodhi’s star dimmed but it was said to be the final straw that broke the camel’s back.

That this detail became known in the midst of the Kashmir fracas and a new low in India-Pakistan relations was too much for the army generals and Prime Minister Imran Khan to bear. Lodhi was deemed a security risk, according to well-informed sources, and her performance began being judged vis-a-vis her personal life.

Lodhi became the target of an intense public campaign once the news leaked that her son Faisal, who is in his late 30s, was married to an Indian-origin woman named Gaurika Gambhir. Old wedding photos circulated on Twitter last month.

Gambhir’s profile says she is from Delhi and has worked at ABN AMRO and HSBC banks. She studied at Columbia University.

Pakistanis began calling Lodhi a “traitor” to the cause and said there was a deep conflict of interest. Some called her an Indian agent but others defended her. Lodhi has refused to comment publicly on her son’s personal life and said that she had always planned to move on after the UN General Assembly this year.

Ironically, in 2003 she had told a British newspaper, The Telegraph, after becoming Pakistan’s high commissioner in London: “I want my son to marry a Pakistani Muslim. I’m very spiritual—it’s a critical part of me. One day, I want to go home.”

Home she did go but not voluntarily. Complaints had been piling up against Lodhi despite her efforts to endear herself to the present dispensation. Khan’s performance at the UNGA was hailed by supporters as sterling and she got some credit for that.

As Pakistani columnist Mohammad Taqi sarcastically asked on Twitter: “Haw hai, removing the manager of the #UNGA World Cup-winning team?”

It’s another matter that the rest of the world was appalled at Khan’s 50-minute speech, which included a veiled threat to use nuclear weapons. He became the first leader to threaten nuclear war from the podium of the UN.

It seems the removal of Lodhi, who was sometimes referred to as Gen. Lodhi for her proximity to Pakistan’s military-intelligence complex, was a long time coming. She was perceived as “incompetent” by the powers that be.

The reason: her total and utter failure to effectively raise the Kashmir issue in the United Nations over the past two months. She wasn’t able to rouse any country to go after India. Even China did the bare minimum and cut its losses. The U.S.-French wall was higher.

Lodhi’s handling of the UN Security Council’s “informal consultations” on August 16 following India’s decision to revoke Article 370 and divide Jammu & Kashmir into two union territories came under the scanner. Word got back to Islamabad that Lodhi didn’t have mastery over the complex rules and traditions of the UN system.

A Pakistani analyst said she often “twisted” facts and sometimes simply resorted to spreading untruths to make herself look good. Her self-promotion on Twitter is legendary.

Before and after the August 16 UNSC consultations on Kashmir, Lodhi gave exaggerated accounts of what she had “accomplished” to the Pakistani press, some of which she had to retract. She talked as if she was inside the room or had a representative when the consultations—called by China—were restricted to UNSC members.

Lodhi’s appearance at the podium immediately after was seen as ineffective and wooden. It looked even worse against the star performance by India’s Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin.

Lodhi didn’t take any questions while Akbaruddin did, including a few from Pakistani journalists. Rawalpindi was riled and Islamabad was incensed at this public failure, a Pakistani source said.

Pakistani American groups had anyway been complaining to Khan over time about her conduct. Malik Nadeem Abid, head of New York-based “Kashmir Mission USA,” in particular had gone after Lodhi for her failure to raise the Kashmir issue more aggressively. He has since claimed victory on Pakistani TV channels for her ouster.

Among Lodhi’s other major gaffes was her flashing a photo of a Palestinian girl at the UN in 2017, claiming it was evidence of “Indian brutality” in Kashmir. The picture was taken in 2014 in Gaza by a photographer named Heidi Levine, and the girl had been injured in an Israeli attack.

At this year’s UNGA, Lodhi referred to Boris Johnson as “foreign minister” instead of prime minister in a tweet. “Sorry typo in previous tweet. Prime Minister Imran Khan met British PM this morning,”

Back in Islamabad they said, my cup runneth over.

Lodhi has been around a long time, serving as Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s ambassador to the U.S. and high commissioner to the United Kingdom. Her latest stint in New York began with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who didn’t want her in Washington but is said to have tolerated her presence at the UN to keep peace with the generals.

As things stand now, Akram will represent Pakistan in the era of the #MeToo movement—a man accused of beating his live-in girlfriend the last time he was Pakistan’s envoy to the UN.

The stables in “Naya Pakistan” must be empty that Khan found only Akram. In 2002, Akram was fodder for New York tabloids after his live-in girl friend Marijana Mihic accused him of physical abuse. Until then he was known mainly for verbal strikes, against India.

He scurried back to Pakistan before the U.S. State Department could revoke his diplomatic immunity and the case was hushed up.

Hopefully, he can’t do much harm to women around him at the ripe old age of 73. As for India, he can still do harm but his task is much tougher than before.

There is a story that is commonly told in Britain that the colonisation of India - as horrible as it may have been - was not of any major economic benefit to Britain itself. If anything, the administration of India was a cost to Britain. So the fact that the empire was sustained for so long - the story goes - was a gesture of Britain's benevolence.

New research by the renowned economist Utsa Patnaik - just published by Columbia University Press - deals a crushing blow to this narrative. Drawing on nearly two centuries of detailed data on tax and trade, Patnaik calculated that Britain drained a total of nearly $45 trillion from India during the period 1765 to 1938.

It's a staggering sum. For perspective, $45 trillion is 17 times more than the total annual gross domestic product of the United Kingdom today.

How did this come about?

It happened through the trade system. Prior to the colonial period, Britain bought goods like textiles and rice from Indian producers and paid for them in the normal way - mostly with silver - as they did with any other country. But something changed in 1765, shortly after the East India Company took control of the subcontinent and established a monopoly over Indian trade.

Here's how it worked. The East India Company began collecting taxes in India, and then cleverly used a portion of those revenues (about a third) to fund the purchase of Indian goods for British use. In other words, instead of paying for Indian goods out of their own pocket, British traders acquired them for free, "buying" from peasants and weavers using money that had just been taken from them.

It was a scam - theft on a grand scale. Yet most Indians were unaware of what was going on because the agent who collected the taxes was not the same as the one who showed up to buy their goods. Had it been the same person, they surely would have smelled a rat.

Some of the stolen goods were consumed in Britain, and the rest were re-exported elsewhere. The re-export system allowed Britain to finance a flow of imports from Europe, including strategic materials like iron, tar and timber, which were essential to Britain's industrialisation. Indeed, the Industrial Revolution depended in large part on this systematic theft from India.

On top of this, the British were able to sell the stolen goods to other countries for much more than they "bought" them for in the first place, pocketing not only 100 percent of the original value of the goods but also the markup.

After the British Raj took over in 1858, colonisers added a special new twist to the tax-and-buy system. As the East India Company's monopoly broke down, Indian producers were allowed to export their goods directly to other countries. But Britain made sure that the payments for those goods nonetheless ended up in London.

How did this work? Basically, anyone who wanted to buy goods from India would do so using special Council Bills - a unique paper currency issued only by the British Crown. And the only way to get those bills was to buy them from London with gold or silver. So traders would pay London in gold to get the bills, and then use the bills to pay Indian producers. When Indians cashed the bills in at the local colonial office, they were "paid" in rupees out of tax revenues - money that had just been collected from them. So, once again, they were not in fact paid at all; they were defrauded.

Meanwhile, London ended up with all of the gold and silver that should have gone directly to the Indians in exchange for their exports.

This corrupt system meant that even while India was running an impressive trade surplus with the rest of the world - a surplus that lasted for three decades in the early 20th century - it showed up as a deficit in the national accounts because the real income from India's exports was appropriated in its entirety by Britain.

Some point to this fictional "deficit" as evidence that India was a liability to Britain. But exactly the opposite is true. Britain intercepted enormous quantities of income that rightly belonged to Indian producers. India was the goose that laid the golden egg. Meanwhile, the "deficit" meant that India had no option but to borrow from Britain to finance its imports. So the entire Indian population was forced into completely unnecessary debt to their colonial overlords, further cementing British control.

Britain used the windfall from this fraudulent system to fuel the engines of imperial violence - funding the invasion of China in the 1840s and the suppression of the Indian Rebellion in 1857. And this was on top of what the Crown took directly from Indian taxpayers to pay for its wars. As Patnaik points out, "the cost of all Britain's wars of conquest outside Indian borders were charged always wholly or mainly to Indian revenues."

And that's not all. Britain used this flow of tribute from India to finance the expansion of capitalism in Europe and regions of European settlement, like Canada and Australia. So not only the industrialisation of Britain but also the industrialisation of much of the Western world was facilitated by extraction from the colonies.

Patnaik identifies four distinct economic periods in colonial India from 1765 to 1938, calculates the extraction for each, and then compounds at a modest rate of interest (about 5 percent, which is lower than the market rate) from the middle of each period to the present. Adding it all up, she finds that the total drain amounts to $44.6 trillion. This figure is conservative, she says, and does not include the debts that Britain imposed on India during the Raj.

These are eye-watering sums. But the true costs of this drain cannot be calculated. If India had been able to invest its own tax revenues and foreign exchange earnings in development - as Japan did - there's no telling how history might have turned out differently. India could very well have become an economic powerhouse. Centuries of poverty and suffering could have been prevented.

All of this is a sobering antidote to the rosy narrative promoted by certain powerful voices in Britain. The conservative historian Niall Ferguson has claimed that British rule helped "develop" India. While he was prime minister, David Cameron asserted that British rule was a net help to India.

This narrative has found considerable traction in the popular imagination: according to a 2014 YouGov poll, 50 percent of people in Britain believe that colonialism was beneficial to the colonies.

Yet during the entire 200-year history of British rule in India, there was almost no increase in per capita income. In fact, during the last half of the 19th century - the heyday of British intervention - income in India collapsed by half. The average life expectancy of Indians dropped by a fifth from 1870 to 1920. Tens of millions died needlessly of policy-induced famine.

Britain didn't develop India. Quite the contrary - as Patnaik's work makes clear - India developed Britain.

What does this require of Britain today? An apology? Absolutely. Reparations? Perhaps - although there is not enough money in all of Britain to cover the sums that Patnaik identifies. In the meantime, we can start by setting the story straight. We need to recognise that Britain retained control of India not out of benevolence but for the sake of plunder and that Britain's industrial rise didn't emerge sui generis from the steam engine and strong institutions, as our schoolbooks would have it, but depended on violent theft from other lands and other peoples.

Editor's note: A previous version of this article erroneously had the beginning of the British Raj as 1847. The correct year is 1858

Such a secular, not, society in la la pak lands that doesn't mind accusing even top diplomat. All the lecturing loudly of Indians on TV (about equal==equal) is not gonna change this.

Modi is, unsurprisingly, India's best PM ever. I am surprised that the weakling and colonial slave Nehru ranks fourth but then the rating he has - 9% - is quite symbolic. :-) It gets even better with Rajiv Gandhi at 6% - a first time '69' PMs within a family? :-)
