French should also activate whatever clause or kill switch to make pukes without french military wares. The existence of French or whites isn't in question but one has to admire their quick corrections. Good for France that they have few smart politicians.

Le Pen is a fringe politician who has been taking this line for the last couple of decades, but was generally ignored. Whether the mainstream actually adopts that line and takes any action, remains to be seen.

She is no longer a fringe poliltician Bart ji, she came second to Macron in the last election . Just the fact that these conversations are happening in the west is probably a good thing but it is already too late to save Europe from becoming Aleppo.

That's good to know! I think that continental Europe will manage to extricate itself from this mess, with people like Macron taking the lead, OTOH we will find Britain becoming the center of European Islamism in the future.

Security forces were deployed after a priest was shot Saturday in Lyon, France.
Paris (CNN)A Greek Orthodox priest who was closing a church in Lyon, France, was shot Saturday by a lone assailant using a sawed-off shotgun, the France National Police said.
The 52-year-old priest was shot in the stomach and his condition is considered life-threatening, according to police and the Lyon prosecutor's office.
The assailant fled after the shooting and remains at large. A police spokesperson said the shooter was dressed a long black coat and a black beanie, and seemed to be hiding the shotgun under his coat.

Abhinandan controversy: Banners, flexes declaring Ayaz Sadiq ‘traitor’ put up in Lahore
LAHORE: Unidentified persons put up banners declaring PML-N leader and former NA speaker Ayaz Sadiq a traitor in different localities of NA-129 on Saturday, a few days after his controversial remarks about IAF pilot Abhinandan Varthaman's release, The News reported on Sunday.

In the flexes, Ayaz Sadiq’s picture was merged with Abhinandan's. The Indian Air Force (IAF) wing commander was captured after the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) shot down two fighter jets of the IAF on February 27. He was subsequently released by Pakistan as a "peace gesture" towards India.

The posters taking aim at Sadiq were attributed to “Patriotic People, NA-129”.
PML-N leaders reacted to the development, alleging that the banners were put up by PTI leader and provincial minister Aleem Khan, who lost the election against Ayaz Sadiq in 2018.

Imran wants even-handed treatment from US with respect to India
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday said Pakistan wanted an “even-handed treatment” from the United States with respect to India, especially on the Kashmir issue, warning that the region (South Asia) was a hotspot and could flare up any time.

“That’s why we expect the US, as the strongest country in the world, to be even-handed, whoever becomes president. The US thinks India will contain China, which is a completely flawed premise,” Prime Minister Khan said in an interview with the German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel.

HISTORY: THE GILGIT-BALTISTAN CONUNDRUM
Despite protestations from India and even some Kashmiris, and despite Gilgit Baltistan existing in Pakistani maps as a part of a territory whose status has yet to be determined, the people of GB have never accepted being part of the disputed state of Jammu and Kashmir, over which Pakistan and India have been at loggerheads since Independence in 1947. It is instructive to look back at history to understand why.
The princely state of Jammu and Kashmir had four units: the province of Jammu, the province of Kashmir, the district of Gilgit and the district of Ladakh. Present-day Baltistan was subjugated and annexed by Gulab Singh’s Dogra army earlier, in 1840, before the Treaty of Amritsar. In the new administrative set-up, Baltistan was made part of district Ladakh as Skardu tehsil.
Realising the geostrategic importance of this region, and fearing a possible Russian invasion from Central Asia, the British directly intervened and created the ‘Gilgit Agency’ in order to bring the area under their control. This marked the beginning of a dual British-Dogra control in Gilgit. Civil administration remained with Dogra rulers, while military and security matters were placed directly under the control of the British Indian Government.

The main aim of the British Indian Empire was to protect its northern border. A local paramilitary force — trained, equipped and led by the British — was formed and given the name of Gilgit Scouts. In 1935, the British took over the administration of Gilgit Agency from the Dogra ruler under a 60-year lease. However, the Baltistan region remained under the direct rule of the Dogras.

Two weeks before the independence of India and Pakistan, the British abruptly cancelled the lease. On July 30, 1947, the British commander-in-chief of the Kashmir army, Major Gen Scott arrived in Gilgit. He was accompanied by Brigadier Ghansara Singh, who had been sent to Gilgit by the Maharaja of Kashmir as a governor. The British offered the State of Jammu and Kashmir to take over Gilgit, as per the lease deed. On August 1, Brig Ghansara Singh took charge of the Gilgit Agency from the British Political Agent, Col Roger Bacon. The Union Jack was removed and the region fell under the control of the Maharaja.
Before and during Dogra rule, the regions of Gilgit and Baltistan were divided between small kingdoms which were ruled by rajas and mirs (local rulers). Though there was dual administrative control of the British and the Dogra dynasty over Gilgit Agency, the rajas and mirs enjoyed considerable autonomy in their own territories. In the Scouts, officers’ ranks were awarded to the ruling elites of these kingdoms, which made the Scouts a strong voice and an actor in the future settlement of this region. However, in the wake of the British departure from the Subcontinent and independence of Pakistan and India, the Gilgit Scouts showed opposition to the new ruler of the Agency as they were uncertain about their status.

With the end of British rule in sight, uprisings began against the Maharaja in different parts of Kashmir. Amid fear of Muslim uprisings in Kashmir and the rebels’ advance, the Maharaja, on October 27, 1947, declared the accession of Kashmir to India. After accession, Gilgit was caught in an uncertain situation about its future. The Gilgit Scouts, who had already formed a Revolutionary Council, initiated a revolt against Dogra rule on October 31, 1947. The Kashmiri troops were stationed in Bunji, an area near Gilgit, which was the garrison of the Maharaja’s army. The Muslim soldiers of the army led by Mirza Hasan Khan attacked the Sikh companies at Bunji, who then fled from the mountains towards Rondu in Baltistan.
Governor Ghansara Singh surrendered to Sub Maj Babar after some resistance. As a result of this revolt, the areas surrounding Gilgit were liberated from Dogra rule. An independent state, the ‘Islamic Republic of Gilgit’, was declared on November 1, 1947, and a provisional government was formed in Gilgit. The revolutionary government designated Raja Shah Raees Khan of Gilgit as president, and Col Mirza Hasan Khan as the chief of the armed forces. After 15 days of independence, Gilgit acceded to Pakistan unconditionally. On November 16, 1947, the representative of the Government of Pakistan, Sardar Mohammad Alam Khan, arrived in Gilgit and took charge as the Political Agent.
Meanwhile, the Raja of Rondu, Mohammad Ali Khan, organised the populace with meager resources to fight against the Sikh troops who had reached there. Numerous troops were killed in the battle, and many were arrested and sent to Gilgit. The Raja of Rondu later wrote a letter and invited the Gilgit Scouts to liberate Baltistan from Dogra Raj, as there was no organised local force in the area.

In Baltistan, the local people fought alongside the Scouts, for nearly a year, against the Kashmir army and paid a heavy toll in casualties. As Afzal Ali Shigri, former IGP Sindh who hails from GB, wrote in a column in daily Dawn (December 21, 2018), independence was achieved “through brutal running battles by a handful of mostly civilian fighters led by the Gilgit Scouts, against the forces of Kashmir.”
After the unconditional accession of the region to Pakistan, instead of devising a proper governance and administrative structure, the Government of Pakistan imposed the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) in the area. FCR, a colonial law, deprived people of their basic rights and gave the Political Agent — a civil servant — supreme authority, with executive, legislative and judicial powers. Furthermore, despite Pakistan’s annexation of Gilgit and later Baltistan, the despotic rajgiri (principality) and jagirdari (feudal) system was not abolished. The exploitative practices of taxation and begaar (forced labour without pay) by the rajas and mirs continued.
Nosheen Ali, in her book Delusional States, maintains that, although the political leadership of Pakistan had accepted the accession, Pakistan fell short of formally incorporating GB into its territory, primarily because of the contest with India over the control of Jammu and Kashmir. Consequently, the Government of Pakistan linked GB with Kashmir in anticipation of gaining more votes in a possible United Nations’ plebiscite for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute.
Due to this linkage, the region still has the status of a disputed territory. Subsequently, the region is in constitutional limbo and denied representation in the national legislature. Successive governments have tried to regulate the problems and solve the puzzle through different measures; however, the anomaly still exists. The question of GB’s integration into Pakistan is complicated as Pakistan and India both maintain GB is part of Kashmir. When India raised the case of Kashmir before the UN, India’s claim on Kashmir was denied and the whole state of Kashmir — including GB — became a disputed territory. The issue was supposed to be resolved through a plebiscite with certain preconditions.

GB’s scholars and political analysts take a contrary position. As per historical accounts, Kashmir’s Dogras captured Baltistan through military aggression; there was no legal or constitutional rationale for their rule. The people never accepted their rule, either. Hence, the occupation of the region through military invasion cannot justify associating the region with Kashmir.
What makes GB’s conundrum intricate is that, despite 73 years of independence, it is still unable to achieve what it strove for. Every year, people of GB celebrate their independence with great zeal. However, the struggle to integrate the region in Pakistan continues.

Various governments in Pakistan have tried in the past to regulate the issues of GB through reforms and executive orders. Recently, the region has come under the spotlight again when the federal government announced plans to give GB provincial status. It seemed GB was finally on the path of integration with Pakistan. However, the important question remains whether the Government of Pakistan can take this bold step and, instead of another executive order, bring GB into the ambit of Pakistan’s constitution.

Pakistan suers heavy loss in Inter Parliamentary Union Presidential polls.

Pakistan faced a major embarrassment as it lost the elections for the post of President of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) during the ongoing
virtual session of the Governing Council of the IPU despite heavy lobbying over last few months.

Pakistani Senate Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani lost to Portuguese Member of Parliament Duarte Pacheco, who was elected as the President of the IPU for a 3 year term, defeating candidates from Pakistan, Uzbekistan (Akmal Saidov, First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber) and Canada (Salma Ataullahjan, Senator).

Portuguese candidate Pacheco got 222 votes, much above the absolute majority of 198 votes, while Pakistani candidate managed only
52 votes :rotfl: , ET has reliably gathered. The elections were held securely through online medium.

Pakistani Senate Chairman had widely canvassed for his candidature and had even travelled to few countries to campaign. By his own admission, he had also tried to contact the other three candidates, but could not even get a response, it is understood.

It is a general practice to ensure regular rotation between geopolitical groups while electing a President. Over the past twenty years, the Presidency of the IPU has been held by MPs from Egypt (Arab Group. 1994-1997), Spain (Twelve Plus Group, 1997-1999), India (Asia –Pacic Group, 1999-2002), Chile (Group of Latin America and the Caribbean, 2002-2005), Morocco (Arab Group, 2011-2014), Bangladesh (Asia-Pacic Group, 2014-17) and Mexico (2017-2020). The outgoing President is a Mexican MP Gabriela Cuevas Barron, who was elected in October 2017.

By the Principle of geographical rotation, the next President should be from the Twelve Plus Group, which comprises of 47 member countries. Twelve Plus group had endorsed the Portuguese candidate by an overwhelming majority of 60:10, rejecting the Pakistani-origin Canadian candidate Ataullahjan, it has been learnt.

Defying the generally observed geographical rotation principle, Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan Sanjrani also put forth his candidature. However, he could not garner support within the Governing Council.

From Indian Parliament, Speaker of Lok Sabha Om Birla and Lok Sabha MP, Poonamben Maadam and Rajya Sabha MP Shri Swapan Dasgupta cast their votes through a secure online voting mechanism

Currently, 206th session of the Governing Council of the IPU is being held virtually from 1 to 4 November 2020to elect the IPU President, as well as to discuss and take decisions on pressing issues relating to the functioning of the organization – including the adoption of the IPU budget and programme of work for 2021.

The IPU President is the political head of the organization. The President directs the activities of the organization, chairs full meetings and acts as the IPU representative at global events and gatherings. Presidents are elected for one mandate of three years only by the Governing Council, which is the administrative and decision making body.

The Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU), headquartered in Geneva, is the global organization of national parliaments. It was founded 131 years ago in 1889 as the rst multilateral political organization in the world, encouraging cooperation and dialogue between all nations.

Today, the IPU comprises 179 national Member Parliaments and 13 regional parliamentary bodies. It promotes democracy and helps parliaments become stronger, younger, gender-balanced and more diverse.

Twice a year, the IPU convenes over 1,500 parliamentary delegates and partners in a world assembly, bringing a parliamentary dimension to global governance, including the work of the United Nations and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Pakistan’s Gulbuddin Hekmatyar conundrum
As the withdrawal of the American forces from Afghanistan appears imminent, Afghan politicians are forging new alliances to climb up the power ladder. In this regard, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar’s recent high-level visit to Pakistan was a major development. The former premier of Afghanistan acknowledged Islamabad’s role in the Afghan peace process and condemned India for politically meddling in Afghan politics. Hekmatyar, however, is widely remembered as a warlord and the vivid memories of his actions in Kabul during the Afghan conflict raise questions about his political integrity. Apparently, his visit reflects the notion that he is looking for political favours in the neighboring capital. Therefore, should Islamabad consider extending a diplomatic hand to Hekmatyar to contain India’s rising influence in Kabul or should the state avoid risking relations with the incumbent Afghan government?
Contempt for Hekmatyar’s return to Afghan politics is especially prevalent among the Afghan youth. They believe that if back in power, he will align himself with the Afghan Taliban and will try to reestablish a rigid adherence to the Shariah. Thus, it is likely that if Islamabad endorses Hekmatyar, the move will possibly alienate the already polarised Afghan youth against Pakistan. Furthermore, it can also push them closer to New Delhi’s rising influence in Afghanistan, as the former ostensibly supports the so-called ‘moderate’ factions of Afghan politics.
Lastly, supporting Hekmatyar’s Hizb-e-Islami was a compromise America made during the heyday of the Afghan jihad. Steve Coll, in his path-breaking account of the Afghan conflict, Ghost Wars, highlights that while the CIA liaisons in Pakistan favored Hekmatyar, Ahmad Shah Massod, the so-called moderate leader of Tajik rebel forces, was a widely preferred option within the American diplomatic circles. The latter largely dominated the post 9/11 American foreign policy and are highly influential within the American civil establishment. Hence, any attempt by Islamabad to assert itself in Afghan politics can elicit an American reaction, especially when the recent Washington-New Delhi diplomatic romance is at its apex.

Vienna shooting: Gunman hunted after deadly 'terror' attack
Gunmen armed with rifles have opened fire in six different locations in central Vienna, killing three people and wounding several more, police say.
Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz called it a "repulsive terror attack" and said one gunman was also killed.
Police were searching for at least one attacker who was still at large, the interior minister said.
The shootings took place near Vienna's central synagogue but it is not yet clear if that was the target.
The city's police chief said two men and a woman were killed. At least a dozen other people were wounded, officials said.
The attack happened just hours before Austria imposed new national restrictions to try to stem rising cases of coronavirus. Many people were out enjoying bars and restaurants which are now closed until the end of November.
European leaders strongly condemned the shooting. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was "deeply shocked by the terrible attacks".
What do we know about the attack? Police said the incident began at about 20:00 (19:00 GMT) on Monday, near the Seitenstettengasse synagogue, when a heavily armed man opened fire on people outside cafes and restaurants.
Members of the special forces quickly arrived at the scene. One policeman suffered a gunshot wound before other officers shot the perpetrator, who was armed with an automatic rifle, a pistol and a machete.
Jewish community leader Oskar Deutsch tweeted that the synagogue was closed at the time the attack began. An officer guarding the synagogue was among the wounded, newspaper Kronen Zeitung reported.
It was not immediately clear how many attackers took part in the shooting. Austrian media said one person had been arrested, citing the interior ministry. Footage posted on social media showed people running through the streets as gunshots rang out.

Pakistan teaches young girls how to behead to take revenge on France for Prophet Mohammad cartoon
Continuing its nefarious activities, Pakistan is now teaching young girls how to behead a human to ensure that they can get vengeance on France after the French magazine Chalie Hebdo republished a cartoon that 'insulted' Prophet Mohammad.

In a video posted on the micro-blogging platform Twitter, young girls in a burka can be seen holding a scimitar and imitating the actions of a 'teacher' who is teaching them how to hold and use a scimitar on an effigy to behead the figure.

Threatened by Rafale aircraft, panicky Pakistan rushes to China to buy fighter jets and missiles
Pakistan is panicking over Rafale jets and has rushed to China begging for help.
By: Krishna Mohan Mishra, Nov 04, 2020

In a major boost to the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) firepower, three more French Rafale multi-combat fighter jets are expected to arrive in India very soon. Five Rafale jets flew to the Ambala airbase via Abu Dhabi on July 29 and have already been inducted into the IAF’s Squadron 17. However, this has led to panic and tension in Pakistan and it has rushed to China begging for help.
Amid fear over India procuring Rafale jets, Pakistan is trying to buy more than 30 J-10 (CE) fighter jets and its missiles under emergency purchase from China. According to sources, in October, a team from Pakistan visited China and finalized the discussion of buying 50 J-10 (CE) fighter jets. Now, Pakistan is trying to procure 30 jets and missiles, out of the total 50, under emergency purchase.

Marine LePen is definitely fringe. French electoral system is a 2 step process. When the centrist & left parties are too fragmented, LePen's right wing party makes it to round 2, which does not equate tow die popularity second only to Macron. But she is now heavily dependent on the bottle and there is no strong successor in her party. The centrists will anyway take over anti-islamist rhetoric now and leave LePen with nothing unique.

Since their coffers are empty, Pakis could be trading islands on the Karachi coast in exchange of Chini fighter planes. India needs to prempt and thwart such a move else we will have a Chini naval base couple of hundred kms from Jamnagar.

Napaki is a nervous lot these day. anyway I think let China takeover Napak land and convert them to communists by placing them in detention centers. If they succeeded its good and if not it’s also good. This will bring covert anti India actions out in the open. Maybe dimwit DDM and the lot will lose love for Napaks.

Btw, how do you think we can preempt them? Any suggestions?

First of all, react now and Raksha Mantri should make a simple statement "Any change of ownership, control or grant of access to islands or lands by Pakistan in the Arabian Sea or elsewhere will be considered as a threat to India's security and will invite a thwarting response by India".

Not put our head in the sand as we did when the Paki's "gifted" large swaths of terrotory to the Chinese in J&K north of Kargil sector.

The very fact that India has made a statement will make it harder for Pak & China to move on this.

Secondly get the Quad to make a statement "We strongly oppose the change of ownership, control or grant of access by any country to the Chinese as it will create a threat to the maritime security all countries in the Indo-Pacific region."

Thirdly, get our friend & ally France to put on hold all military cooperation with Pakistan, including spares and maintenance for Mirage 5 jets, Agosta submarines. After completing the negotiations of an additional batch of Rafales worth 2 squadrons, make the signing of the deal conditional to stopping all current & future military equipments support & sales to Pak.

Fourthly, get the US to make a statement that any such move will be seen as a threat to Diego Garcia and will be dealt with the view of eliminating such a threat.

Fifthly, get Quatar, UAE, KSA to oppose such a move to enable permanent Chinese presence in the Arabian Sea as a threat to maritime security.

Sixthly, make this a big issue at SAARC level and put more pressure on Pak.

There are so many things India can do preemptively which is much cheaper than letting the threat materialise and then try to deal with it with expensive toys and deployments.

Sir
With the 'Change of Baton' expected in January, Quad will most likely be a Quad in Namesake only unless a strong and independent minded Secretary of State is appointed!!
With France and given the anti-Macron statements from Dimran that could happen.
Rest is all talk unless India takes some independent strong steps to Chin-Pak-Turk Combo!!!
Will NaMo-ShMo take that step??

There is too much needless pessimism about future Biden presidency that is pure speculation and unwarranted.

What independent strong steps would you want Namo to take? Please be specific.

the steps that you have mentioned yourself sir!:
1.First of all, react now and Raksha Mantri should make a simple statement "Any change of ownership, control or grant of access to islands or lands by Pakistan in the Arabian Sea or elsewhere will be considered as a threat to India's security and will invite a thwarting response by India".

Not put our head in the sand as we did when the Paki's "gifted" large swaths of terrotory to the Chinese in J&K north of Kargil sector.

The very fact that India has made a statement will make it harder for Pak & China to move on this.
2.Sixthly, make this a big issue at SAARC level and put more pressure on Pak.
3. Secondly get the Quad to make a statement "We strongly oppose the change of ownership, control or grant of access by any country to the Chinese
as it will create a threat to the maritime security all countries in the Indo-Pacific region."
We dilly-dallied in condemning Turks action in Armenia Azerbaijan conflict.
Did RS specifically mention China following the 2+2 meetings where Pompeo was very vociferous!
Lets face it, the real power is the Namo/ShMo combine and nothing happens without their consent so how will RS make any statements!!
Why would US make any comment about DG
Given the new Saudi Riyal note I doubt you would get them to state anything more, they wouldn't want an open war for the throne of 'Defender of the Holy City' what with Turks/Malay openly challenging and some others covertly supporting them
I think the first few months on the new presidency with set the stage for the next four years barring some spectacular hara-kiri by ISIS

Pak gifting their lands to China would constitute a bilateral affair between the two. I propose a reverse psychology approach:
India should release a statement saying
"we are happy that Pakistan is gifting lands to chinese - this a continuous affair for pakistan - giving away land in kashmir, losing land in BD, the islands - this shows that the two nation theory is truly dead and all pakistani politicians want to do is sell Pakistan piece by piece to the highest bidder. - by this process, Pakistan should reduce to the size of singapore in the next 100 years - inshallah"

Mean-e-while
Russia's special forces contingent arrives in Pakistan for 'Druzhba 5'
A contingent of Russian special forces arrived in Pakistan for a two-week long military training, the Inter-Services Public Relations said Thursday.

The exercise, Druzhba 5, aims at sharing the experiences of both the armies in the counter-terrorism domain, the military's media wing said.

Explaining about the purpose behind the foreign team's visit, the ISPR said that sky diving and hostage rescue operations will be the highlights of the exercise, Druzhba 5.

The first-ever joint exercise between Pakistan and the Russian military had taken place in 2016.

Similarly, in September, a Pakistan armed forces' contingent participated in the opening ceremony of a multinational military exercise, named Kavkaz-2020, held at the Astrakhan region, Russia.

The exercise Kavkaz from September 21 to 26 aimed at assessing the ability of troops to react to various challenges and learn from each other’s experiences, DG ISPR Major General Babar Iftikhar had said.

Guard guns down bank manager over ‘blasphemy’
SARGODHA: The security guard of a bank in Quaidabad tehsil of Khushab district shot at and critically injured the branch manager on Wednesday morning over allegations of blasphemy and the victim later died at Services Hospital in Lahore.

A former army man, Ahmad Nawaz, the security guard at National Bank of Pakistan’s Quaidabad branch – some 50 kilometres from here, opened fire at branch manager Malik Muhammad Imran Hanif at about 8:45am on Wednesday for, what he alleged, “uttering insulting remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)”. He later surrendered himself to the police and confessed to opening fire at Hanif.
Local clerics gathered around the bank and observed a shutter-down strike. They announced all-out support for Nawaz {Please note that this is not the victim but the assailant}, who was in police custody.

Hanif’s maternal uncle said his nephew {This is the victim} was a true believer and could not dare utter blasphemous remarks.

Friends or not, lifeline is still being extended to TSP.
Forex deposits stability: Saudi Arabia, UAE agree to extend $4b loan
ISLAMABAD: The PTI government has been left with no other option but to seek rollover of $4 billion deposit loans obtained from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates (UAE) for another year in order to avoid dwindling of foreign exchange reserves, it is learnt.

Top official sources confirmed to The News on Wednesday that Pakistan decided to seek rollover of $4 billion loans for another year under the arrangement of IMF programme because Islamabad could not afford to pay back the outstanding loans upon its maturing at this stage.

The irony is that the gunned down bank manager's last Facebook post was celebrating the jihadi who beheaded the teacher in France wishing the destruction of France.

This is not a fresh loan but an extension of the existing loan. As long as the loan exists, it is one additional form of leverage for those states over the Pakis and good value given that it is chump change for UAE/Saudi. Think of as a leash for the Paki dog.

Pakis are upbeat about Biden's victory.
'Friend of Pakistan’ Biden could mend soured bilateral relations
Unlike Trump’s scepticism about Pakistan’s role in the US war on terror, Biden has historically looked upon Pakistan as a strategic regional ally.

During his tenure as the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC), Biden, along with Senator Richard Lugar, promulgated the Enhanced Partnership Act with Pakistan 2008.

Their efforts to strengthen the US-Pakistan relationship later culminated in the famous Kerry-Lugar-Berman Act 2009 after Senator Kerry became the Chairman of SFRC. The main aim of Biden’s effort was to improve the political and economic situation in Pakistan for regional stability.
Shuja Nawaz, in his recent book “The Battle for Pakistan”, recalls that during his visit to Kabul as the vice president of the US, Biden gave a ‘shut-up call’ to Hamid Karzai when the latter demanded that the US should pressurise Pakistan diplomatically to curb its support for the Afghan Taliban. Biden countered this by asserting that “Pakistan is fifty times more important than Afghanistan for the US”.
Furthermore, a change in the White House can also alter Pakistan’s relationship with its hostile eastern neighbour. India has enjoyed diplomatic leverage under the Trump administration. Its hostile narrative towards Pakistan since the last Indian elections, and the unilateral annulment of Article 370, revoking Kashmir’s special autonomy, relatively went unheard in Washington.

To contain the rising Chinese influence, the Trump administration openly supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitions, culminating in a $3 billion arms deal earlier this year between the two countries. Such a diplomatic romance between the US and India has not only alienated Pakistan but also raised a red flag in Beijing, resulting in numerous skirmishes and diplomatic spats between the three nuclear-armed neighbours in South Asia.
Biden’s historical position and his views regarding Pakistan suggest that under him the Washington-Islamabad diplomatic exchange will flourish, and the US might resume its civil-military assistance to Pakistan, which was ceased under the Trump administration.

However, the new administration might compel Islamabad to move away from Beijing’s influence because of the strained US-China relationship. Thus, maintaining a balance between the two powers is a job Pakistan’s foreign policy experts should be prepared to undertake.
