Pakistan seeks Iran, Saudi help for Belt and Road projects
In addition, Pakistan is trying to guarantee that the projects, if completed, will generate enough revenue to pay off what could be $60 billion in China-held debt. To this end, Islamabad is pitching the corridor to Iran, Saudi Arabia and other countries that might benefit from faster trade routes into and out of China.

Pakis are first rate liars. As soon as it was reported that Aramco would invest $44B in India to build a refinery, Pakis floated a fake news saying a delegation would come from KSA to explore investment in building a refinery at Gwadar worth billions. Anyone remember that sh!t? The delegation visits were all about KSA bail out of Pakistan because Pakis begged for it but Pakis kept saying it's related to refinery investment, CPEC etc. What a bunch of losers.

Terroristan - November 11, 2019

Dr Hafeez Shaikh’s sane advice - Kamran Yousaf

There can’t be two opinions that Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, the Prime Minister’s adviser on Finance and Revenue, has the toughest task to accomplish among all the government ministers.

Last Friday, Dr Shaikh appeared on the Express News for its newly launched show “The Review” to answer some of the tough questions regarding the government’s handling of the economic challenge. This was his first interview with any private TV channel since he was given the huge responsibility of turning around the economy in a manner that Pakistan comes out of the vicious boom and bust cycle. Dr Shaikh has remained part of the economic teams of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf and then the PPP government. Therefore, Pakistan is not a new territory for him. It is also one of the reasons that sceptics are unsure if the Harvard graduate can deliver on the promises the PTI made during the election campaign since he couldn’t do much during his previous stints.

The PTI’s narrative is straightforward. It holds the PPP and PML-N governments from 2008 to 2018 responsible for the current economic mess. Prime Minister Imran Khan has repeatedly said both these parties plundered the national wealth, leaving the country’s economy in dire straits. Hence, the government said it had to take some tough decisions to arrest the slide. The record devaluation of the rupee against the dollar, increase in interest rates, and curtailing imports are some of those decisions which the government argued were necessary. These measures, Dr Shaikh admitted, have caused hardships for the common man. But he emphasised that the government will take all difficult decisions to rectify the country’s economy. The de facto finance minister said all these steps were aimed at addressing Pakistan’s chronic economic woes in a manner that the country is put on the path towards sustainable economic growth.

While the Prime Minister may have laid the entire blame on the PML-N and the PPP, his finance adviser pointed to a much larger issues that have held back Pakistan’s economic growth. Without naming anyone or singling out any government, Dr Shaikh said political instability and Pakistan’s failure to develop strong economic and trade ties with other countries are the two main reasons behind Pakistan not achieving a sustainable economic growth rate. His prognosis is absolutely right but contrary to PTI’s narrative that all ills of Pakistan’s economy are due to the “corruption” of PPP and PML-N.

Many may have reservations about the role of Dr Shaikh or his capacity to deal with the current economic challenge, but if the PTI is to really turn around Pakistan, it has to pay heed to his advice of working on political stability and focusing on trade and economic ties with other countries. On political stability, the PTI government has to revisit its current confrontational approach towards opposition parties. The recent outburst of Prime Minister Imran questioning the illness of three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has further strengthened the perception that he is still standing on the container. If Nawaz’s medical reports were doctored, who should be held accountable for this? Certainly, it was Imran Khan who himself acknowledged that the PML-N leader was critically ill and his government won’t create any hurdles if he wanted to go abroad for treatment.

The second suggestion of Dr Shaikh is related to Pakistan’s economic and trade ties with other countries. Our current exports are just around $23 billion, which shows the volume of our failure to develop strong economic and trade ties with the outside world.

Imran Khan has promised to transform Pakistan. But all his reforms are linked with the economic turnaround. And that turnaround is not possible as long as he remains hostage to his flawed narrative.

Informal economy to be regulated for meeting FATF concern
ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to bring all unregulated sectors of the national economy under an interim regulatory framework to address at the earliest outstanding reservations on money laundering and terror financing (ML and TF) of the international financial watchdog — Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

The decision was taken by the National FATF Coordination Committee (NFCC) at its recent meeting. Prime Minister Imran Khan had set up the high-powered 12-member NFCC in the first week of October to ensure execution of all FATF-related tasks till Dec 1.

A senior government official told Dawn that the NFCC has decided to appoint the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) as an interim regulator for the real estate sector in view of disagreement among key stakeholders over creation of proposed Real Estate Regulatory Authority. The FBR will also act as a regulator for jewellers, jewels, diamonds and precious stones because there was no regulator at present for the sector.

Likewise, the NFCC has recommended the role of regulator for lawyers, legal advisers and law firms to the Ministry of Law and Justice. It authorised the Audit Oversight Board to act as a regulator for chartered accountants, accountants, financial consultants and all those relating to accounts groups.

The Financial Monitoring Unit (FMU) has been assigned the job of regulating financial transactions through Pakistan Post and National Savings for the time being.

Officials said that the decision to have above interim regulatory arrangements had been taken on the basis of feedback and advice received from a recent plenary of the FATF in Paris that decided to keep Pakistan in the grey list until February next year. The participants of the Paris Plenary had expressed concerns that the above-mentioned unregulated sectors involved great risk potential to be used as sources of ML and TF.

FATF members are reported to have expressed displeasure that so critical areas in Pakistan were operating without regulators and demanded to have proper regulatory framework for these sectors for national risk mitigation.

Led by Minister for Economic Affairs Division Hammad Azhar, the NFCC comprises federal secretaries of finance, foreign affairs and interior besides heads of all the institutions and regulators concerned with money laundering and terror financing.

They include the State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) governor, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan’s (SECP) chairman, FIA’s director general, member (Customs) of the FBR and the FMU’s director general. The committee also has three senior officials from the military’s General Headquarters.

The NFCC meeting held about a week ago noted that the country’s real estate sector had seen concentration of undocumented flow of money. There had been a lot of discussions among the federal and provincial authorities over creation and coordination of real estate regulators but the process was found time consuming given overlapping and yet independent powers of various stakeholders in the constitution and relevant laws.

It was, therefore, found feasible until the resolution of legal challenges to empower the FBR to act as a regulator for the real estate sector. The FBR was considered well placed to act as a regulator given its engagements with key real estate players in the past as part of documentation and taxation purposes in the first phase. Documented and undocumented annual business in the real estate sector is estimated to be around Rs500 billion. The decision would also help the FBR to better achieve its tax related objectives, sources said.

They said senior officials of Pakistan Post, courier companies and national saving schemes would coordinate with the FMU during the interim period to address emergent FATF targets. The work has also been started to put in place proper regulatory framework under the Ministry of Postal Services, finance ministry, the SBP and SECP for which Dec 31, 2019 has been set as deadline.

This framework after completion would be shared with the International Country Risk Guide for review in January 2020.

The official said Pakistan would also submit an updated progress report along with its strategy and measures against anti-money laundering and counter financing terror (AML/CFT) to the FATF and Asia Pacific Joint Working Group by Dec 7. By Dec 17, the joint working group would seek further clarifications (if any) and Pakistan would be required to file a conclusive report, based on joint working group questions, by Jan 7.

Pakistani authorities expect the 39-member joint working group to review the country’s case by the third week of January. They hope to be able to remove reservations of 8-9 key countries and report significant progress on its target action plans to the FATF that would finally decide in its next plenary due in second half of February about the future course of action — removal, extension or graduation from the grey list.

The Officials believe that Pakistan had completed action plan on about 22 items to a large extent and lagged behind on 4-5 targets. They advocate that if reviewed under normal circumstances, Pakistan could be given some more time to overcome remaining shortcomings. Some quarters in Islamabad suggest that Pakistan was unfortunately also being viewed from a political angle, otherwise, even Afghanistan was not in the FATF’s grey or blacklist.

“Pakistan faces greater challenges than many other countries because of its risk profile,” Mr Azhar had recently told a parliamentary panel. Some countries had been removed from the grey list after just 80 per cent compliance while Pakistan may be required to do more, he had said.

Pakistan army suffers heavy losses on the Line of Control (LoC) in Akhnoor sector in its attempt to regain some of the lost posts as Indian troops retaliated to Pakistan firing.

Pakistan army is reported to have suffered heavy losses on the Line of Control (LoC) in Akhnoor sector in its attempt to regain some of the lost posts as Indian troops retaliated to Pakistan firing very effectively today.

The development comes at a time when the Indian Army was in the process of deploying recently acquired Spike Anti-Tank Guided Missiles along the LoC with Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.

Reports said Pakistan army resorted to heavy firing on the Indian positions on the LoC between Khour and Pallanwalla in Akhnoor sector at 4 am and again at 9 pm tonight and tried to regain some of the posts they had lost earlier in retaliatory firing and shelling by the Indian troops. Aware of Pakistani plans, the Indian Army again retaliated effectively and thwarted Pakistani plot to regain their lost posts twice during the day today. Though there was no official word, at least three Pakistan army personnel were reported to have been killed and two others injured in the Indian retaliation.

Heavy exchange of firing between the two sides continued for about two hours in the morning, reports said, adding that there were no casualties or damage on the Indian side. There was no official confirmation about number of posts the Pakistan army has lost in their forward areas on the LoC between Khour and Pallanwalla in Akhnoor sector.

However, official sources confirmed that Pakistan army violated ceasefire on the LoC in Akhnoor sector at 4 am, which was strongly retaliated by the Indian side, leading to exchange of firing and heavy losses on Pakistan side. Pakistan army again violated ceasefire at 9 pm today, which was again returned by the Indian side.

Meanwhile, the students of Government Primary School were shifted to safer places as preventive measure when Pakistan resorted to unprovoked firing along the International Border in Kanachak sector. The school students and villagers had close shave at Gol Pattan area of Kanachak sector at Indo-Pak International Border, when Pakistani Rangers violated ceasefire at around 10 am.

The firing continued till 12.30 pm while BSF also retaliated.”The school students of Primary School of forward area Gol Pattan area were shifted to safer places in BSF’s Bunker Vehicle,” reports said.

Meanwhile, in view of continued ceasefire violations by Pakistan army, the Indian Army will shortly deploy recently acquired Spike Anti-Tank Guided Missiles along the LoC with Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir. “The Spike missiles can be used in the bunker buster mode,” official sources told the Excelsior.

They said the Indian Army has received 240 Spike Anti-Tank Guided Missiles and their 12 launchers from Israel on fast track mode to meet emergency requirements especially along the LoC with Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir where ceasefire violations, infiltration attempts etc have increased following Balakote air raids by India on February 24 and scrapping of special Constitutional provisions of Jammu and Kashmir and its bifurcation into two Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh on August 5 this year.

The missiles which are supposed to be mainly used for anti-tank operations can also be quite helpful for destroying hardened shelters or bunkers in which the militants might be hiding.

Indian Army had recently targeted camps and launch pads of the militants along the Line of Control about a month ago in which number of militants and Pakistan army personnel were killed.

According to sources, Spike Anti-Tank Guided Missiles can also be used during night and can strike the target accurately. While 210 Spike Anti-Tank Guided Missiles with 12 launchers have been received by the Indian Army for Northern Command headquartered at Udhampur, sources said the Army could seek more such launchers and missiles shortly for deployment on the LoC as it sees no early de-escalation of tension with Pakistan in view of the Central Government decisions on Jammu and Kashmir, which have upset and isolated the neighbour which was now using ceasefire violations and trying to push the militants into this side for causing disturbances.

Faced with increased presence of militants including hardcore cadre of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militant outfits at launching pads close to the LoC with full backing of Pakistan army in twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region and Baramulla and Kupwara in Kashmir, the Indian troops have been taking series of measures to thwart intrusions.

“During past couple of months, Indian Army has already foiled series of infiltration attempts by heavily armed militants on the LoC,” sources said, adding that apart from deployment of Spike Anti-Tank Guided Missiles and launchers, the Army has also taken number of other measures to ensure that Pakistan’s designs to push militants in Jammu and Kashmir to step-up militancy don’t succeed.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa on Tuesday suspended the extension notification of Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa till Wednesday.....Gen Qamar was set to retire on November 29 on completion of his three-year term.
Wednesday = 27th. If it gets delayed 2 more days, Bajwa's status is unclear.

Seems like Dimran is miffed with Bajwa after the Azadi march of Maulan Diesel. The petition on against Pajwa as Quadani too was launched after the march.

Perhaps some deal was struck between Pajwa and Diesel and Dimran is not too happy about it and flexing his muscles, whatever little he has. Popcorn time.

Did this happen yesterday or some weeks back? I remember seeing the picture of that bus sometime back and felt the bus not damaged badly if it really fell in a deep gorge.

Added later: That was another accident in Babusar when 10 army soldiers and 17 civilians died.

Cabinet amends Army Regulations to include provision for 'extension in tenure' of army chief - Dawn.com
The federal cabinet on Tuesday amended the Army Regulations (Rules) to include a provision for an "extension in tenure" of the army chief, Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood announced.
Addressing a press conference after a meeting of the cabinet, Mehmood said the Supreme Court, while taking up a case regarding Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa's tenure extension, had today observed that the Army Regulations did not have a provision for an "extension" in the army chief's tenure.
He said that in order to "assist the court and clear matters", the cabinet today amended Rule 255 of the Army Regulations. Besides "suspension of retirement" and "limitation of retirement", Rule 255 will now also contain "extension in tenure" of the army chief, he said.
According to the minister, the amendment is in line with the prime minister's intention to grant an extension to Gen Bajwa.
The cabinet gave its consent to alter the summary for the army chief's reappointment in light of the amendment in the Army Regulations. The old summary will be withdrawn and a new summary will be sent to the prime minister, Mehmood said.

US consular staff in Turkey grilled over video 'mocking Zamzam'
ISTANBUL: Turkish police questioned two local staffers from a US consulate in Turkey on Wednesday over a Halloween party video accused of “denigrating religious values”, news agency DHA reported.
The pair, who work at the consulate in the southern city of Adana, were taken in for questioning and later released, the local prosecutor said.
It followed a video, which spread online, showing a woman mocking “Zamzam” water, which is considered holy because it is drawn from a well in Makkah.
A man, dressed as a pious Muslim, advises her to drink a cocktail.
The prosecutor said those detained were two employees from the consulate aged 30 and 38.

This is absolutely hilarious. A few days ago they were braying loudly about some pop sensation called Akcent who was going to do a 'solidarity with Kashmir' concert in Pakistan. Now, not knowing much about the contemporary pop scene I assumed that it must have been a popular band.

Turns out that Akcent is more of a failure than Pakistan, and that is saying a lot. Wiki entry states:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akcent
They were founded by Adrian Claudiu Sînă and Ramona Barta in 1999. On September 2013, the band broke up following Sina's erratic behaviour, and the usage of the group "Akcent", which prompted them to leave the group.

Disbandment of Akcent (2013-present)
In September 2013, the band split after a quarrel, leaving Sînă as its only member :rotfl:
So the 'band' is basically just one loser with mental problems and has no real cache with any audience.

Of course if the Akcent guy is a loser the Pakis can't be far behind. So this news got published in Dawn:

https://www.dawn.com/news/1518526
LAHORE: The Punjab government’s plan to organise a musical night with the Romanian pop band Akcent to ‘express solidarity with the Kashmiris’ at Governor House today (Sunday) has sparked a controversy following a fierce reaction from the electronic and social media.

A governor’s spokesperson said the programme has been cancelled, claiming that the Governor House did not know the details of the event but only knew that an event was being organised by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

But it gets even funnier  :rotfl:

However, Chief Minister’s Taskforce on Women Development chairperson Tanzila Imran, the host of the event, says the programme has not been cancelled as yet. She says pop singer Adrian Sina would land in Pakistan soon.

Ms Imran told Dawn she had found the singer on Twitter after he was continuously supporting Pakistan and chiding India for its brutalities on Kashmiris, including women and children.

Spokesperson says event has been cancelled; organiser denies

She claimed Mr Sina had shown special love for Pakistan and had tweeted Happy Independence Day to Pakistan on Aug 14 but did not do so on Aug 15 for India, which fetched strong reaction and criticism from India.

Following Indian pilot Abhinandan’s capture in Pakistan and presentation of cup of tea to him, Akcent band singer had tweeted “Fantastic Cup of Tea”. Ms Imran said the ISPR had responded to this tweet and invited him for a cup of tea.

“This is the whole background when I decided to find and invite him for his performance but with an obligation that he will address a press conference, criticise brutalities and demand lifting of curfew in Kashmir,” the Chief Minister’s Taskforce chairperson said.

The pop singer had tweeted on Oct 19: “Coming to Lahore on 24 Nov and would love to have a fantastic cup of tea with you at Governor House VOK organized by J.H Entertainment. Thanks to PM of Pakistan Imran Khan, Governor Punjab, CM Punjab, Women Development Task Force Punjab Tanzila Imran Khan”.

“I had booked the singer at a cost of Rs800,000 from my own pocket and so far spent Rs2.8m from my pocket to raise a voice against brutalities being committed in Kashmir as well as the worst kind of curfew that imprisoned all Kashmiris in the valley,” Tanzila Imran said.

She said the Punjab government had only given a newspaper advertisement and the Governor House had committed for the ground.

“Besides this, neither the Punjab government, nor did Governor House or women development department spent even a single penny on the event,” she added.
And here was the end result:
https://www.dawn.com/news/1518637
LAHORE: After the Punjab government withdrew its support and logistics for the holding the concert of Romanian pop band Akcent over response on the electronic and social media, the band performed at the Alhamra Cultural Complex on Sunday. It was earlier scheduled to perform at Governor House.

Since the Romanian band was invited and payments were made, it performed at cultural complex before a large crowed but without any gesture for held Kashmir.

HISTORY
In keeping with its tradition as center for the arts, Lahore’s Al Hamra Arts Council is today the most developed complex of its kind in Pakistan. The Lahore Arts Council was founded in 1950 and was originally situated in a bungalow with wide lawns all around it boasting some of the most priceless trees in the city. Originally the building where Alhamra stands today was a residence abandoned at the time of partition in 1947. Subsequently it became a place where dance, music, singing and fine arts were taught

Hanging a senior armyman is an extreme step. You expect TSPA to do that to civvies, not to one of their own.

Plea filed against Pakistan Army chief for being Ahmadi Muslim
The plea also named the former DG ISI Rizwan Akhtar for failing to fulfil his duty as a Muslim by not informing the government that Bajwa does not belong to the religion.
Published: 22nd November 2019
PESHAWAR: A petition has been filed against Pakistan Chief of Army Staff, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, for serving at the top post despite being an Ahmadi Muslim. The petition, filed by former Major Khalid Shah in Peshawar High Court, alleged that Bajwa belongs to Qadiani community. Qadianis also known as Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan and have been declared as non-Muslims by the heads of all sects.
Notably, according to Pakistan's Constitution, a non-Muslim officer cannot be appointed as the army chief.

Pakistan vulnerable to another coup after SC hold on General Qamar Javed Bajwa's extension puts army in direct confrontation with Imran Khan
There is the someone who moved the Peshawar High Court against the extension of the General on the grounds that he is a Qadiani.

Alongside is the inevitable speculation on possible unhappiness within the Pakistan Army at the turn of events.
Powerful families who usually have a foot in the government and in the army are furious.
In what is a shock of almost seismic proportions, Dawn news reported that the chief justice has set aside the notification on an extension to the present Pakistan Army chief, until a hearing tomorrow. That in itself is news. Even more surprising is the whole process in terms of what did happen and what didn’t, which lead to the present court decision.
First, it seems a number of petitions have been filed in court against the extension given to the General, among which is one by an institution called The Jurists Foundation, an unknown organisation that seems to have no website of its own. This petition was however set aide, with the Court taking suo moto notice of the whole issue under Article 184(3) of the Constitution which allows the court to take up matters in public importance with reference to the enforcement of any of the Fundamental Rights.
That in itself is shocking to anyone who knows Pakistani history. Then comes the question of the process itself in terms of an extension to the chief. As is now known, an extension of three years had been announced by the Prime Minister’s Office on 19 August on the grounds of ‘regional security’ threats. Thereafter, nothing was heard of this extension, and no notification issues from GHQ either.
Emerging details now confirm that out of 25 cabinet members, only 11 had approved the extension. Thereafter, it seems the prime minister again signed it and re-issued the notification two days later on 21 August. On 22 August, there was a brief notice that the army chief called on the prime minister. Now comes the hitch. Article 243 of the Constitution clearly notes that the commander of the Armed Forces is the President of Pakistan, and he is supposed to appoint the army chief, with the ‘advice’ of the prime minister.
Most of us would have trouble remembering who exactly the president is, except that he was recently pulled up by Twitter for posting a video of protests in Kashmir that were clearly fake. Yes, that’s President Arif Alvi. In court, the attorney general is reported to have said that following cabinet rather less than enthusiastic assent, the file for signature was not sent to the president.

If Bajwa cannot win an extension, how can he win a war against India hain? If he cannot defeat the judges in a court case, how can he defeat the SDRE baniyas?

That's why he should pull all stops and show the court who the boss is!! Where are the Al-Khalids?

Look at the gall of the courts..
A soldiers General, The one who always gave befitting reply to India, The one who blew up Indian security forces in Kashmir, The one who gave Pakistan, its handsomest PM, The one who caught the most dreaded Indian spy and refused to hand him over to India, The one who made Pakistan army's Q-on-Q results better than ever, The one who made Pak Army , the best and only business house in Pakistan, The one who made Maulana Diesal to call off his dharna, The one who provides protection to even Judges..

These Pakistanis are so ungrateful and ingrate. Pak Army instead should test Shaeen and Ghori on Pak SC when in full session.

I think there is more to this. Bajwa has got his extension, and he will get past the problems also. But the SC in Pakistan will make some ruling against extension of all future Army chiefs in Pakistan.

Seems like SC is taking itself far too seriously.
This is simply tussle for power and SC wants to lay down the rules of engagement with Miliestablishment.
With the kind of power SC has in Pakistan, Unless they throw out the CJI, It would be very hard to control him or future ones.
With each new SC judge, they too would want to exercise power and get a piece pie from the cake.
Anywhere when the Legislature wanes in power, Some other force steps in. In Pak, both Civil and Army are struggling with keeping this afloat hence creeping influence of SC in daily affairs.
Bajwa may survive this Surgical assault on his power but next COAS may not be so lucky.
Your move, COAS :)

PM Imran denounces India's call for Israeli model in occupied Kashmir - News Desk

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday denounced India’s call for an “Israeli model” in occupied Kashmir, terming it a depiction of “the fascist mindset of the Indian govt’s RSS ideology that has continued the siege of IOJK for over 100 days”.

He also called out “powerful countries” for their silence over the gross human rights violation in occupied Kashmir because of their “own trading interests”.

Imran’s comments came in a tweet on Wednesday morning in which he linked a report by Middle East Eye on a senior Indian diplomat’s controversial remarks at an event in the United States.

As per the report, Sandeep Chakravorty, the Indian consul general in New York, told “Kashmiri Hindus [known as Kashmiri Pandits] and Indian nationals that New Delhi will build settlements modelled after Israel for the return of the Hindu population to Kashmir.”

He asked those present “to give the [Indian] government some time to implement its plans in the [occupied] valley”.

“I believe the security situation will improve, it will allow the refugees to go back, and in your lifetime, you will be able to go back … and you will be able to find security, because we already have a model in the world.

‘Is their humanity dead’, PM questions world’s silence on Indian atrocities in IOK

“I don’t know why we don’t follow it. It has happened in the Middle East. If the Israeli people can do it, we can also do it,” the report quoted Chakravorty as saying.

He also spoke against international condemnation and interference into the matter. “[The issue is) getting pulled into the [UN] Human Rights Council. It’s getting pulled into the US Congress.

“A delegation wants to go. But go to other places. Go to Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan. No one is talking about taking photos there. So why do they want to come to our place? They don’t like it now that we are now asserting ourselves,” Chakravorty was quoted as saying.

A return of the Hindu minority to Indian Occupied Kashmir has been one of the main premises for New Delhi’s move to scarp Articles 370 and Article 35A of the Indian Constitution, which barred outsiders from buying land in the occupied territory.

The Middle East Eye report described the event where the Indian diplomat spoke as “one of a number of events held at the behest of India’s right-wing government in its attempt to wrestle back control of the narrative in the face of the immense grassroots mobilisation against its actions in Kashmir.”

In recent past, an image of Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan would pop up whenever any user searched for the word ‘bhikhari’ (beggar).

Pakistan’s spy arrests: Brigadier’s kids studied in US, engineer bought home in his own name
Having honed his skills during the development of Shaheen-II, Akram became the team lead for Shaheen-III’s engine and motor development. His cover job was as a professor in the Pakistan Army’s Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering to avoid suspicion. Probably because of his centrality to the project, he was sent to the US on a trip. Some sources claim it was an official posting for one of the international military leadership networking/education programmes that the US Army runs; others vehemently deny this.
On his return to Pakistan, he started providing a steady stream of information to the US. Specifically, he is known to have provided details of the Shaheen family’s (nuclear) warhead mating mechanism to the US as well as the names of the nuclear agency liaisons and the limited details he was given to design the missile.

The names allowed the US to pinpoint their intelligence efforts while the design details helped the Americans understand certain weights and dynamics of Pakistani nuclear warheads – specifically how much its weight affected the maximum range of the missiles (for example, a 2,000-km range missile carrying its full payload will have its range reduced to half). This allowed the US intelligence agencies to chart the trajectory of future developments accurately (and compromise those in the process).

Under normal circumstances, these acts of espionage would not have been detected. However, two things went horribly wrong. The first was an attempt by the US to sabotage the Pakistani missile programme in the hope of slowing it down. The second was the recklessness of Akram himself. The Shaheen-III had completed two successful tests in 2015. Yet, in January 2016, when a routine test was conducted, it resulted in a spectacular failure (Pakistan does not announce failed tests). The inquiry found a series of “mistakes” that should have been avoided had standard operating procedures been followed.

Unsurprisingly, and unlike India, a security inquiry was immediately ordered by Pakistan. Initially, the inquiry found nothing, but curious details of Akram’s new house worth Rs 70 million (US$ 450,000) emerged. Akram had blundered by purchasing the house under his own name, unlike the standard practice of buying it under a family member’s name. However, even at this point, Akram’s espionage guilt had not been established, and he had only managed to raise a high suspicion of corruption.

The break came when the directed surveillance detected him contacting Brigadier Raja Rizwan. In the retired officer’s case, too many things began to fall in place — of his three kids, two (the elder son and one daughter) were in the United States, enrolled into on education programmes they were clearly not cut out for, with suspicious out-of-turn green card allotments. This was enough to arrest Akram and, under torture, he divulged details and provided evidence of his communications with Brigadier Raja. Then, the latter’s sustained torture revealed a pattern of passing information to the US since his days in Berlin in 2012.

There is a lesson here for India – a robust security programme that does not spare even those at the top from suspicion is one of the most effective counter intelligence tools. Sadly, in India “service loyalty” and a pervasive “VIP culture” often miss these vital clues. Equally revealing is the fact that even though the official ISPR statement does not name the agency this spy ring was linked to, Pakistani unofficial Twitter assets have been claiming Brig Raja and Wasim Akram were RAW agents. Clearly then, being a US agent gives you some form of protection, but being an Indian agent ensures execution.

India apprises US, others in UNSC of Pakistan conspiracy to embarrass Delhi
In the past two months, Pakistan, with the help of China has submitted proposals to designate six Indians as global terrorists.
Nov 27, 2019
Shishir Gupta

India has informed the US and its other friends in the UN Security Council (UNSC) about blatant attempts by Pakistan with the help of its all-weather ally China to, first, accuse Indian expats working in Afghanistan of terror crimes and then get them listed as global terrorists by the 1267 sanctions committee, diplomats and officials in intelligence agencies said. To date, the 1267 committee has listed 130 Pakistanis and 25 entities based in that country for their role in global terror. Following the May listing of the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed’s Masood Azhar, despite Pakistan’s best efforts to prevent it, the country has been desperately trying to get back at India. Expats working on reconstruction projects in war-ravaged Afghanistan are a soft target.
In the past two months, Pakistan, with the help of China has submitted proposals to designate six Indians as global terrorists. The most recent additions are Raghavchari Parthasarthy and B. Sudhakar Pediredla, both working as storekeepers for KEC International at Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan, the officials cited in the first instance added on condition of anonymity. Fearing the worst, Parthasarthy has been brought back to India but Sudhakar is yet to be traced. The company is involved in laying transmission lines and both men belong to Telangana.
While the US has blocked two proposals supported by China, four more Indian proposals are pending before the 1267 committee. The two blocked ones concern Venumadhav Dongara and Ajoy Mistry; the two others pending before the committee are Appaji Angara and Gobinda Patnaik Duggivalasa. And almost all of them have been accused of involvement in a terror attack in Peshawar. Both Angara and Duggivalasa are back in India, according to the officials. All of those brought back were evacuated, some overnight, by India from Kabul.
UN watchers say that separately, Pakistan is trying to get the terror lists involving its nationals and entities reduced by citing them as killed or neutralized in drone attacks or counter-insurgency operations. At the same time, it is targeting India to show that its neighbour is no different when it comes to global terror. But apparently the play is not so simple.
