In the new study, published today (Jan. 22) in the Journal of Medical Virology, the authors found that 2019-nCoV appears to be a mix, or recombination, of two coronaviruses — one that is known to infect bats and another coronavirus of unknown origin.

Next, the researchers further analyzed the genetic sequence of 2019-nCoV to look for patterns in the genetic code that may reveal the host that the virus infects. They considered several potential hosts, including marmots, hedgehogs, bats, birds, humans and snakes. Based on this analysis, they concluded that 2019-nCoV may have come from snakes.

The findings "suggest for the first time that snake is the most probable wildlife animal reservoir for the 2019-nCoV," the authors wrote.

The two types of snakes common to southeastern China (where the outbreak originated) are Bungarus multicinctus, or the many-banded krait, and Naja atra, or the Chinese cobra, the authors said.

However, researchers not involved in the study questioned the findings.

"They have no evidence snakes can be infected by this new coronavirus and serve as a host for it," Paulo Eduardo Brandão, a virologist at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, told Nature News. He added that there is no solid evidence that coronaviruses can infect hosts other than mammals and birds. Brandão is currently investigating whether coronaviruses can infect snakes.

The study also found that, as a result of genetic recombination, 2019-nCoV has a change in one of its viral proteins that recognizes and binds to receptors on host cells. This recognition is a key step in allowing the virus to enter cells, and the change in this specific protein may have contributed to 2019-nCoV's ability to hop species, the authors said.

They also noted that snakes were among the animals sold at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, where many initial cases worked or visited before they became ill.

^ First explanation I heard was that it was Bat Soup, bats blamed like in the recent Malloostan virus, and genocided until proven innocent. One celebrity had to go on socmedia and Apologize for eating bat on live video. Probably now cleaning bat poo in caves in Gobi. Snake rumor is new to me. The common factor seems to be origins (at least one point) traced to "Hunan market", Wuhan. Ppl reported to have quit going to that market.

Just saw Gerard post..

A team led by Wei Ji, a microbiologist at Peking University Health Science Center School of Basic Medical Sciences in Beijing, looked for a sign that 2019-nCoV had adapted to any specific animal host.

Most amino acids are encoded by multiple codons — sequences of three DNA or RNA nucleotide triplets that encode amino acids. One way that viruses adapt is by encoding proteins using the same choice of codons as their host. Wei’s team compared the codons favoured by 2019-nCoV with those preferred by potential hosts including hedgehogs, pangolins, bats, chickens, humans and snakes.

The team reported that 2019-nCoV’s choice of codons was most similar to those used by two snakes: Bungarus multicinctus (the many-banded krait) and Naja atra (the Chinese cobra). Snakes were sold at the Wuhan seafood and animal market, the researchers note. “Taken together, snakes could be the most likely wildlife animal reservoir for the 2019-nCoV,” they write in a paper published on 22 January in the Journal of Medical Virology.
A mammal is the most likely candidate, says Cui Jie, a virologist at the Pasteur Institute of Shanghai who was part of a team that identified SARS-related viruses in bats from a cave in Yunnan province in southwestern China in 20172. SARS and 2019-nCoV are part of a virus subgroup known as betacoronaviruses. Fieldwork in the wake of the 2002–03 SARS outbreak has found such viruses only in mammals, Cui says. “Clearly this 2019-nCoV is a mammalian virus.”

Also, I hear that in Hyderabad there is a brisk bijnej in all-purpose Virus-Avoidance Drugs which people are consuming. Will stop SARS, Corona and any other virus. No effect on Congi virus.

Close to 10,000 people have contracted the new coronavirus that originated in Wuhan, China—more cases than SARS in 2003. So far, 213 people have died. The preliminary fatality rate for 2019-nCoV hovers around 3%—which is low, but still concerning because of the number of cases accumulating.

But that fatality rate is likely to be higher in older adults. Unofficial open-source data from researchers based in the UK and China show that out of 41 deaths, 39 were in people over 50. Bloomberg reports similar figures. While that’s not unexpected, it indicates the need for effective therapies targeted at this population. And as the proportion of adults over 50 continues to increase globally, future pandemics could be deadlier than they’ve been in the past.

“During the original SARS outbreak, we found that the fatality rate was 10%,” says Vineet Menachery, an immunologist at the University of Texas Medical Branch who studies how coronaviruses affect aging immune systems. “But that jumped to 50% in people over the age of 50.” There was a similar pattern of fatalities with MERS in 2015.

Clinical features of patients infected with 2019 novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China

Symptoms of 2019-nCoV
For confirmed 2019-nCoV infections, reported illnesses have ranged from people with little to no symptoms to people being severely ill and dying. Symptoms can include:

Fever
Cough
Shortness of breath

CDC believes at this time that symptoms of 2019-nCoV may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 after exposure. This is based on what has been seen previously as the incubation period of MERS viruses.

The latest situation summary updates are available on CDC’s web page 2019 Novel Coronavirus, Wuhan, China.

Oh my god. Indian scientists have just found HIV (AIDS) virus-like insertions in the 2019-nCov virus that are not found in any other coronavirus. They hint at the possibility that this Chinese virus was designed ["not fortuitous']. Scary if true. https://biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/202 ... 1.full.pdf
This study by Indian scientists is being written off. Its not peer-reviewed.
Basically, they have compared the 2029-nCov to SARS, and found the differences and compared to viruses. They say these differences matched bits in HIV. This cannot happen as evolutionary but inserted!

But, it seems these 4 different sequences can be found in many things not just virus. Moreover, 2 are not exact match and hence to claim they were inserted is not right.

Anyway, this only feeds conspiracy theories.

A bit more about the HIV protein similarity. If we read the comments to the original biorxiv article, multiple posters suggest valid points junking the similarity.

Basically, the authors claim 4 different stretches of protein sequence match two different proteins of HIV. But the stretches of proteins are quite short to give confidence. They are between 8 and 12 amino acid long i.e. 24 and 36 bases of RNA long.

The confidence level in such short sequence match being significant is quite low.

According to international reports, followed by the H5N1 outbreak, authorities have selectively slaughtered more than 17,000 poultry. Another virus, H5N8 had spread across eastern Europe in recent weeks due to which authorities in India had also started culling chickens and destroying eggs to contain the bird flu strain.

One fairly obvious approach to treatment is passive immunisation, perhaps apheresis, that takes antigenic, neutralising, sera and to develop anti- anti-idiotypic antibodies that can then be amplified via standard monoclonal hybridisation techniques.

Just one of those projects I never got around to look at. However there must be some literature on it by now.

No, the corona virus is another retrovirus like HIV and uses similar cellular transcripts to self replicate. They also probably used interferon. It is an obvious trial strategy. Nothing extraordinary at all.

Certainly if those successes are established, it will be a major relief.

Now US media trying to blame "slow chinese govt response", but consider that the first cases were confirmed on December 31!! I call that EXTREMELY fast action. Both by govt, but even faster by the virus.
It does look like something designed by someone to spread extremely fast. If there are things in Nature that have evolved to be this effective.... it's scary. What if it had gone unrecognized for another, say, 15 days - or if someone had **NOT** acted fast?

Sorry, Coronaviruses have a single stranded positive sense RNA genome. They are NOT retroviruses. Retroviruses (like HIV) get their RNA reverse transcribed into DNA (hence the name retro) once inside the host cells and get this DNA integrated into the host genome. Thats why hard to get rid of the infection.

Coronaviruses infect a cell and their genomic RNA directly translates proteins in the cytoplasm. No genomic integration.

Most viral replication methods have common steps i.e. protein production and rna replication etc that can be therapeutically targeted. i.e. drugs designed to inhibit these processes will work with multiple viruses.

That is correct indeed it’s an RNA virus that does not integrate into human DNA. The central point is of course that the replication machinery is biologically constrained/conserved and hence a potential locus of vulnerability to currently available nucleotide analogs.

Yes It includes permanent residents and any family members...

Interestingly China is preparing 130+ billion aid package. Nice to see a bailout to help the millions each Communist party official has in Chinese stock market. Where can see where China’s it’s priorities lay.

The Chinese central bank said the overall liquidity in the system would be 900 billion yuan (approx. $130 billion) more as compared to the same period last year.

Whatever this thing is, it's not a bioweapon. It would make no sense to use a bioweapon without an antidote. The fact that the Chinese dictatorship is not mass vaccinating the Chinese population makes it very unlikely this is meant as a pox on the American or Indian house.

Further, genetic engineering is far enough along to introduce a kill switch into a sequence. That is if the Chinese have a treatment, they sure seem to be panicking a lot. The sequence was published with no obvious kill switches, they could have omitted that part. But the virus has likely been independently sequenced by many national authorities and labs already.

There is no conspiracy or genetic engineering, NYT wrote a excellent piece on it utter incompetence on every level that lead to this crisis any nation on earth would have handled it better than China did. The local officials were engaged in coverup, refuse to quarantine the initial victims, refused to provide the hospital staff adequate equipment ( god forbid we spent few million anything other than military), China health system was utterly unprepared and allowed the virus to spread to most of its staff and patients and Xi was so obsessed that almost every decision had to do thru Beijing slowing down response even further.
