About monsoon what's guarantee that it won't naturally bring more bad news. My wild guess is many countries with certain behaviourial patterns of certain kind will be shyt scared of it and wanna try taking precautions for peaceful outcomes - just avoid being blamed for everything.

In the wild(africa), herds get infections a few months before the monsoon. It gets serious and many start dying as if it were an extinction but suddenly rains arrive and the infections 'magically' disappears.

Epidemic will be lingering one.. Rate of infection will decrease after population aquires "herd immunity"..

More than 100 wild animals died from poisoning in a mass die-off seemingly triggered by coronavirus disinfectant

At least 135 wild animals were found dead in a Chinese megacity and tests show that they were poisoned by the disinfectant that's being used to combat the coronavirus.
At least 17 species of animals, including wild boar, weasels, and blackbirds, were affected by the mass die-off.

Okay, here is my take:
- Wash your hands, as they recommend. Single most effective way in our control.

- If you have not, get Flu Vaccine. There are cases of H1N1 this year and it is not fun. Since this years Flu vaccine is effective against H1N1 - PLEASE get it (even if there are only few months left in this season)

- Early to sleep and good sleep habits (8 hours sleep and try to fall sleep right-away etc) - Time after time, clinical studies leave *no* doubt. If all other things are equal, you are going to reduce your chances of getting sick (your immune system will fight it) by as much as 80%. This looks very unbelievable but there is sufficient data. (Besides it is easy to do)
Add take a booster gel cap of Vitamin D to improve immune response against Flu like viruses. Most of us are very deficient in Vitamin D and therefore prone to colds and fevers

The scrubbing of sidewalks and walls is also baffling, unless those are places where people stood in queues for treatment. You cant scrub an entire city with harsh chemicals and not get your entire landscape contaminated for years. I suspect they want to make it look like they are hard at work, so Xi wont lose face and wont eat their faces later.
Despite multiple posters here giving golden certificates to the Chinese govt for a job well done and expressing fears about Indian governments' lack of interest in such shiny photos, this epidemic is one thing that shows the limits of their form of command-governance. If US can convince folks to self-quarantine themselves, so can the more consensus driven society of India was my original contention.

My brother is in South Korea.

He said that many got infected in a church gathering where an old lady(who was infected) was also present.

So this sudden rise in cases are due to this reason.

He said that face masks are mandatory in public now. He was not allowed to enter a supermarket without the mask.
He got information that some lockdown news may come in the next 2-3 days. (if it comes at all)
Right now they have started taking precautions in schools and colleges.

Even though he lives a bit far from Seoul general public(in far regions) is quite aware and taking all precautions.

China 'deliberately delaying' clearance for plane to evacuate Indians: Sources
Source: PTI - Edited By: Hemant Waje February 22, 2020
China is delaying grant of clearance to India's proposal to send an Indian Air Force flight to carry relief material for people affected by coronavirus in the neighbouring country and bring back Indians from its city of Wuhan, official sources said Saturday.
India was to send a C-17 military transport aircraft to Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, on February 20 but the plane could not take off as permission was not granted for the flight. "China is deliberately delaying grant of clearance for the evacuation flight," a high-level source said.
The aircraft was to carry a large consignment of medical supplies to China and bring back more Indians from Wuhan.
Sources said the Chinese side continued to maintain that there was no delay in granting permission for the flight to go, but "inexplicably" the clearance has not been given. In a letter to President Xi Jinping earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed India's solidarity to the people and government of China in meeting the challenge of the coronavirus outbreak and offered to provide assistance to the country.

China's coronavirus death toll crosses 2300, WHO team to visit Wuhan
By K J M Varma February 22, 2020

The death toll in China's novel coronavirus climbed to 2,345 with 109 more deaths reported, while the confirmed cases rose to 76,288 as a team of World Health Organisation experts, currently in the country to investigate the COVID-19 outbreak, is expected to visit the worst-affected Wuhan city on Saturday, Chinese health officials said. A total of 397 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported on Friday, while 109 deaths were reported from 31 provincial-level regions, Chinese health authority said on Saturday. By the end of Friday, a total of 2,345 people died of the disease and 76,288 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection had been reported from all over the country, a daily report from the National Health Commission (NHC) said on Saturday.
Among the deaths, 106 were from the Hubei Province, the epicentre of the virus, one each from Hebei province, Shanghai and Xinjiang, it said.
Hubei Province reported 366 new confirmed cases and 106 new deaths on Friday, the provincial health commission said Saturday.
The latest report brought the total confirmed cases in the hard-hit province to 63,454, it said.

So you rather have Cheen not quarantine its population? Have them running helter skelter from Cheen everywhere?

No, sir. I am happy they are a commie authoritarian state in this case.

Believing that a less authoritarian Cheen would have be able to stop the initial outbreak is just pie-in-the-sky wishful thinking.

Japan and Korea can't stop the infection even when they had weeks to prepare for it. How would anyone be able immediately quantify and stop the initial outbreak when no one had any clue at the time?

In this case, if Cheen were democratic it would be far, far worse. It would have exploded on everyone far quicker.

But Jan 25th is too early.
No. Disease was already well-known in cheen by Jan. 1. Why was it known, and why did cheen race to isolate the virus by January 7 (per CDC) and PUBLISH the gene sequence by Jan 12 (presumably after giving PLA-favored companies a decent head start)?

As for "How can death rate be > 100%?"
The "128%" is very EZ to explain, but in the kind spirit of some postors here, I will just say: "That is explained in elementary madarssa math as used brilliantly by Gen. Musharraf in Gujranwala". ppl should be expected to do a leettil bit of gray-cell usage, hain?* Think of how the rate actually gets reported - and when - and by whom.

*Initially most deaths are attributed to other causes because this is not identified. Those deaths are later added to the toll (or not, in which case we don't include them so death rate is massively under-reported) so an artificial delay is also created.

As for the holiness of the CDC data: look carefully at why they showed a sudden jump circa Jan. 17.

Bad publicity to see an Indian C-17 in Wuhan. You can bet the landing will happen under cover of darkness and IAF will be asked to take off before dawn. No photos of the op will be seen.

It is probably a case of not able to recognize it is corona. Patients would have underlying health issue, fall sick. Go to the doctor, doctor gives medicine for underlying sickness.

People get listed as died of lung failure, kidney failure etc. Unless their lungs are scanned or proper kit is used, the virus is not detected.

Heard a story about a Baki who cheated the airport screening by taking high dose of Dafalgan. He passed through 2 international airport and went to his village in Punjab. By night he was coughing blood and was brought to Islamabad where he died.

I think Japan is well placed to tackle this situation. Under normal circumstances they have face masks (crowded area) and disinfectant dispensers are placed on counters in super markets, offices and other public places.

Most countries with authoritarian approach discount the value of early and accurate information sharing coupled with education of masses to drive natural human instinct in dealing with pandemics.
China and now Iran are prime examples. Generally argumentative population ( such as US and India ) that questions everything under the sun is best informed and socially better prepared to fight such calamity as a united community.

It also relieves the burden on central authority and provides millions of helping hands in such large scale mobilization of resources. Unquestioned central diktat that works wonders in building trenches, high rise buildings, shining malls and public transport fails miserably in fighting pandemics.

All good, but it suggests a different approach to handle epidemics than the "quarantine/rows of beds" approach from Florence Nightingale's time.
We suggest massive investment in telemedicine and localized care, with such things as diagnostics, oxygen, forced ventilation available within 1 km of every home.
Note that up-to-date training is available across the world, for instance WHO courses. The thing I don't know (among others that I don't know that I don't know) is:
How do you do a blood-urine test ("assay"?) and come out with those neat Carnatic Music type
taaaaaggggagaga
etc?
Can that be done in a small office/lab or does it need mega machines?
The flu test was reduced to these tiny strips that either turned blue or red within 2 mins.

Can the reason of (excessive?) Deaths in China be due to wrong treatment protocol? Like giving corticosteroids which might aggravate respiratory distress?

As Ratio of death/recovery shows fatality rate of 10%

^^ Gyan, they are used to "RS" syndromes practically every year. They would have gone with the default treatment protocol for pneumonia, then SARS. These also have respiratory distress, hain? (u r not talking to someone exactly competent in med. items, remember..) If it was deliberately weaponized then could it be that it was tuned to thrive on standard-protocol? (extreme CT, I know..)
I would think that initially they did not think it was anything different from prior editions. Then patients started dying/ getting brought in DOA. So they scrambled to find out what was new. This is why fatality rate was 100% for initial patients. They they learned..

Anyway they had no treatment for it, which is what led to the panic. Now they seem to be able to stabilize patients, leading to much better recovery record. Looks like one just has to provide life support until the body kicks in the defences.

Some restrictions imposed on export of medical equipment to China: India
NEW DELHI: India on Sunday said some restrictions were imposed on export of certain medical equipment to China in view of their short supply within the country and asserted that precautions taken by authorities were in accordance with the WHO's advisory on coronavirus.
The comments by the Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs came after China raised the issue of India restricting export of certain medical supplies to it following the coronavirus epidemic in that country.
"It is hoped that the Indian side could review the epidemic situation in an objective, rational and calm manner, handle with China's much-needed items in a cooperative and constructive way, and resume normal personnel exchanges and trade between our two countries as soon as possible," Chinese Embassy Spokesperson Ji Rong said earlier.
She said the World Health Organisation has repeatedly opposed any travel and trade restrictions on China following the coronavirus outbreak and that all parties should follow the recommendations by the global body.
Replying to a query on the issue, MEA Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said the precautions taken by India are in accordance with the WHO's advisory about the outbreak of coronavirus infection.
He said some restrictions have been imposed on the export of certain medical equipment to China in view of shortage of their supply in India too.
"Just like any other country, India with a billion plus population has the responsibility to take the necessary measures to combat the spread of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak which, if not properly managed, can become a global risk," he said.
He said that responding to the needs of China, India had allowed a one time exemption for the export of some items which had been restricted.

The MEA spokesperson also mentioned about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this month, offering India's assistance to China in the "hour of need".
Kumar also referred to India's decision to send medical relief on board a special flight to China and hoped that the Chinese authorities will give permission for the aircraft to go to the country.
"In a humanitarian gesture of medical relief, a gift reflecting the solidarity of the people of India with the people of China, is expected to be delivered to Wuhan by a special flight," he said.
"We have also called upon the Chinese authorities to allow Indian citizens and those of our neighbouring countries to return by the same flight. We hope that they will give it positive consideration," Kumar said.
On Saturday, government sources said that China was "deliberately delaying" permission for the Indian Air Force plane to coronavirus-hit Wuhan to supply relief materials and bring back more Indians from the city.
They said though flights from Japan, Ukraine and France were allowed to operate from Wuhan, Indian request was not heeded to so far.
Last week, Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong urged India to review restrictions on trade and movement of people.
Almost all Indian airlines have stopped flights to China while the government has cancelled all e-visas as well as normal visas issued to Chinese citizens.
India has already evacuated around 640 Indians from Wuhan, the epicentre of coronavirus outbreak, in two separate flights. According to estimates, over 100 Indians are still stuck in Wuhan.

A Political Test
China's Public Health Crisis Becomes a Crisis of Faith

The Covid-19 epidemic poses political risks for China's leadership. It's now on President Xi Jinping to deliver security and prosperity while trying to solve a serious public health crisis. Meanwhile, dissatisfaction with the government's handling of the situation is growing online.
By Georg Fahrion, 18.02.2020

Chen Quishi is no longer posting online. In late January, he snuck into Wuhan -- the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak -- with a backpack, a sleeping bag and a smartphone. It was the day after authorities had sealed off the city. The 34-year-old Chen, a lawyer, has made a name for himself as a blogger. In Wuhan, he saw hopelessly overcrowded hospitals, used face masks littering the streets and vomit in front of a clinic; he watched as a nurse who had been infected broke down screaming in panic. The clips he shared online showed a city in a state of emergency.
"I'm afraid," Chen said in one of his videos. "In front of me is the disease, behind me is China's legal and administrative power. But as long as I'm alive, I'll speak what I've seen and what I've heard." He added: "Why should I be afraid of you, Communist Party?"
Almost two weeks ago, Chen disappeared. Friends of his say the authorities put him under "quarantine," where he's apparently not allowed to use a phone, and his whereabouts are unclear. Before his disappearance, the police had urged Chen's parents to stop their son from "spreading negative comments about the government." The blogger was obviously shedding light on things the government would have preferred to keep in the dark. Xi Jinping, the Chinese president and general secretary of the country's all-powerful Communist Party, has declared a "people's war" against the disease, which, since last week, is being called Covid-19. In such a war, a blogger operating as a free agent could pose a threat.
China is currently waging battles on three fronts: On one of them, there are doctors, nurses, scientists and civil servants fighting for public health -- not to mention hundreds of millions of ordinary citizens who are trying to avoid contact with others, washing their hands constantly and wearing protective masks when they leave the house.
On the second front, the battle for the economy has only just begun, after the extended New Year's holiday came to an end last Monday. It will be fought in the coming weeks and months by companies, employees, bankers and policymakers.
The battle on the third front is, by contrast, well underway and is unfolding online. And in that fight, no less than the legitimacy of China's rulers is at stake. After all, it is the Communist Party that is responsible for citizens' well-being. Should it give the impression that it's failing in that duty, one pillar of its power begins to crumble. The virus, in other words, is also a grave political threat.
An 'Existential Crisis'
Many cities have now been sealed off, with public life in Beijing and other metropolises having ground to a halt. According to the World Health Organization, as of Sunday, Feb. 16, there had been 51,174 laboratory-confirmed infections and 1,666 deaths in China alone. There is little doubt that party cadres, with their cover-ups and delaying tactics in the early days of the epidemic, bear some responsibility for the fact that the virus was able to spread throughout the entire country. Had officials in Hubei province not attempted to suppress warnings about the virus for so long, SARS-CoV-2 may have been contained sooner and more efficiently.
