In these trying times guys please have astha in ram Lalla. He is in Ayodhaya and it is my belief no power in the universe can damage Bharat. Both Bharat and Russia are going to come out of this corona crisis with minimal damage . My prediction. Most other major powers are going to have severe damage unfortunately . Kudos to Indian govt which is doing a great job inspite of the peacefuls.

The official Coronavirus tracker site has added a testing page as well. Shows the number of tests per million by state, as well as the number of +ve results.

http://covidindiaupdates.in/testing.php

It also has a map with all testing centres across the country. While there is a good n/w across the country, I'd like to see the density of TN and KL in other parts as well - populous places like UP or MP would need to be more prepared for the future. Even in KA, I am surprised to see no testing centre in the north like Hubli-Dharwad or Belagavi. WB has all of, wait for it, 3 centres! Note: Kolkata city has 5 labs, but across the state, only Kolkata, Midnapore and Darjeeling are equipped to test. I'd imagine places like Malda or Murshidabad are prone to be hotspots going by the tableeeghi experience. Who knows when another tableeghi jamat cluster of idiocy would show up? The only certainty here is that another such vector would show up sooner than later, given this community's insistence of assembling every Friday despite the lockdown and doing everything inside such assemblies to spread the viruses amongst themselves.

Eventually, every district in the country should be equipped for testing this - building that infra or scaling now would also only help us deal with other infectious diseases going forward, so it won't be a one-time wasted effort. And we are talking what - ~700 districts in India? Money well spent, I'd think.

Coronavirus: Cases, casualties rise, Bengal govt. drags its feet on updating numbers

https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/ ... 244946.ece

The government highlights active cases instead of total infections
While the number of cases of Coronavirus infection and casualties continued to rise in West Bengal, the State government seems to be dragging its feet on updating numbers of the casualties. On April 2, the first time since the outbreak, the State did not release an official bulletin on the website of the State Health department, a practice it started from the first week of February.

On April 1 and 2, doctors of the COVID-19 task force as well officials in charge of hospitals where patients were admitted have agreed that the four persons who died in the past 48 hours had tested positive for Coronavirus but the State is yet to include these deaths in the official count of causalities.

Comorbid conditions’
On Thursday, doctors of the force set up by West Bengal government told journalists at the Secretariat that in the past 24 hours there was confirmation of the death of four persons due to viral infection taking the number of deceased to seven. Dhiman Ganguly, a pulmonologist and member of the special team, who spoke to media persons, however, added that two of those who died were suffering from comorbid conditions such as chronic renal failure and hypertension.

Within hours of doctors confirming that the death toll has increased to seven, Chief Secretary of the State Rajiva Sinha refuted these figures. He said that the confirmed deaths remained at three and in case of four others the State was yet to confirm.

“It is yet to be established that these (four) deaths have occurred because of COVID-19. What we have seen is that they were suffering from comorbidities,” Mr. Sinha said.

The government highlights active cases instead of total infections.

The Chief Secretary also said that the number of cases in the State, which according to task force doctors stands at 53, should be 34. Dr. Ganguly, earlier in the day, said that with 16 more infected in the past 24 hours the number of patients has increased to 53 in the State. This is the highest rise in the number of cases in the State so far since the outbreak of the infection.

“Of these 53 cases, three have tested negative, so 50. Now of these 50, nine have tested negative in the second test, so 41. Plus, seven have died which is attributed to Corona that has not been established. So active cases in this State is 34 at present,” the Chief secretary said putting the number of active cases at 34.

A similar situation emerged on Wednesday when the doctors as well as health officials confirmed three more deaths taking the count to casualties due to the viral infection to six. But after the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remarked that these three were suffering from other ailments, the official bulletin of the Health Department said that the three deceased had “reportedly tested positive” to Coronavirus which was “subject to confirmation”.

Three persons had passed away between Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening and the official bulletin of the State Health Department on Wednesday night said that the deceased had reportedly “tested positive” of Coronavirus which was “subject to confirmation”. One death at a private health facility was reported late on Wednesday. The person had tested positive for the viral infection.

Meanwhile, doctors of the expert committee informed journalists that in the past 24 hours, 104 samples were collected for testing and the cumulative number of samples tested by the State government so far was 767.

“In the past 24 hours, 137 people have been kept under hospital surveillance. The total number of people who have been hospitalised so far in the State stands at 1,014. The number of those still in hospital is 280,” Dr. Ganguly added.

About 58,199 people, which includes a large number of those who returned from foreign countries and other States, have been enlisted for surveillance.

The response of the State on sharing the figures related to death and infections has triggered political controversy. The leadership of both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have accused the Trinamool Congress government of suppressing numbers related to the outbreak.

SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Testing: Status Update 03 April 2020 9:00 PM IST
A total of 69,245 samples have been tested as on 03 April 2020, 9 PM IST. 2653 individuals have
been confirmed positive among suspected cases and contacts of known positive cases in India.

Today, on 03 April 2020, till 9 PM IST, 10,034 samples were tested and reported. Of these, 575
were positive for SARS-CoV-2.

Yesterday Official figure was 2301 which means 352 new cases , even https://www.covid19india.org/ showing 486 new cases . I dont think with increase of test samples there is proportional increase in positive cases .

We have ramped up testing from 1000 to 10,000 /day in just 2 weeks. Private sector test kits are starting to make a big difference in the test numbers.
I'm not too concerned with the increased number of positive cases (it was 2.5% before testing of the TJ crowd). The tests in the last 2 days were largely for the TJ attendees - where the rate of those testing positive was bound to be higher than the general population.

CDC has issued directives about Americans using mask when they step out (they have also said that even a cloth mask would be helpful compared to nothing)...I dunno if similar directives will be issued in India as well (I hope). Because, it is practically impossible to avoid touch nose & eyes multiple times inadvertently during the day. I don't know if any kind of mask will do. Obviously higher rating should be better but we do have severe shortage of PPE for people who need the most i.e. healthcare staff, security personals & grocery staff etc.

3M's masks are supposedly considered as gold standard when it comes N95/N99 masks and apparently they are taking flak for exporting masks to other countries apart from US.

WH trade adviser slams 3M for 'acting like a sovereign nation': 'Stop whining' and make masks for Americans

Now, Trump has invoked Defense Production Act which would ban 3M from exporting Medical PPE to foreign countries.

Point is, all countries are covertly fighting for Medical PPEs...Assuming that we ramp up production of PPEs on a war footing, it would take a long time before there are enough supplies for daily usage for common folks.

India cannot be under lock down for months...post lock-down, each time we step out, there is a risk of catching infection (PPEs doesn't necessarily stop from catching infection...only reduces it). I understand the need for developing herd immunity but I dunno how mingling would be balanced with safety.

Singapore has announced 30 day lock-down starting from April-7th. It was one of the countries, which had managed to flatten the curve. Probably this shut down is due to 2nd wave of infections?

BTW, how is Iran doing? Last time I checked their total cases was around 54,000...lesser than Italy? I think they like TSP could have reduced testing due to severe shortage of kits.

Live updates: U.S. reports more than 30,000 coronavirus cases in record day; CDC recommends people wear cloth face coverings
By Timothy Bella, Anna Fifield and Steve Hendrix, April 4, 2020.

The United States reported on Friday more than 30,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in a day for the first time, bringing the American total to more than 273,000 and the death toll to over 7,000. More than 1 million confirmed cases have been reported around the world.
The tens of thousands of new American cases came as President Trump announced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that everyone wear a simple, cloth face covering while out in public. Trump said the recommendation was “voluntary” and that he is choosing not to do it, but that “it may be good.”

So how many people attended that jamaat event in delhi? I tried searching web. no one mentioned the numbers.

the mullahs first attended the event in delhi, and then dispersed all over the country. After days, the infected came out. If we can map the whole thing, we can see how big the spread is.

It all began on March 16, when a group of 10 Indonesians were rushed to the isolation ward at Hyderabad's Gandhi Hospital, after one of them showed symptoms of COVID-19. While one of them tested positive on March 17, seven others were confirmed to have COVID-19 on March 18.

Exactly, four days later, the Tamil Nadu government confirmed that two Thailand nationals – labelled Patient 5 and Patient 6 – tested positive for coronavirus.

What’s common between these Southeast Asians who have contracted the disease in India, is that all of them attended a huge gathering in Delhi before they travelled south – a conference of Islamic preachers belonging to the Tablighi Jamaat, at a mosque in Nizamuddin in Delhi between March 8 and March 21.

The Jamaat conference in Delhi was attended by hundreds of Indians and foreign nationals, according to some reports. Following the meeting, the Indian participants returned to their respective home states – along with a handful of foreign preachers who had planned to work with the mosques in Erode, Karimnagar and other places.

Almost 50 preachers from Indonesia, Thailand and Kyrgyzstan who attended the conference in Delhi, dispersed to work with mosques in many districts including Chennai. Kancheepuram and Thanjavur. Many others went to Telangana and other states.

The Erode cluster

The Erode group arrived in the city on March 11 from New Delhi. According to the Erode District Collector C Kathiravan, 33 people from the district had attended the Jamaat conference in Delhi.

“The entire group had stayed and visited three mosques in Erode after they had reached here,” another officer said on the condition of anonymity.

The spread to Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem

Further, four contacts (one primary) of Patient 5 and Patient 6 in Coimbatore, have also tested positive.

But it was the death of a 54-year-old man, who was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 in Madurai Rajaji Government Hospital on March 25, that raised concerns among health department officials that the meeting in Delhi could have been the epicentre of the spread.

The deceased had also attended the conference, according to some sources, and had met the Thai nationals in Delhi. While the Thai nationals reached Erode with a group of Indians, the Madurai man had returned to his residence on March 12.

In Salem meanwhile, four out of 11 people who attended the conference – all of them Indonesian nationals – have tested positive for coronavirus, and so has a tour guide who was showing them around the city. The remaining seven people in the group are in isolation.

A statement from the government of Tamil Nadu states that around 1500 people from the state attended the conference,of which the state Health Department has traced 981 of them.

The Karimnagar cluster

Meanwhile, in Telangana, a total of nine Indonesians and one close contact from Karimnagar district have tested positive till now. However, around 700 people from the state are reported to have attended the meeting. The Telangana state government has now implemented a cluster containment plan. As per the plan, they are screening everyone who lives within a three-kilometre radius of the mosque where the Indonesian group stayed for two days.

Based on these tidbits. we can say the event happened b/w march 8th and march 21st. 50 preachers from Indonesia, Thailand and Kyrgyzstan attended the event. most of them then went to country side.

foreign mullah batch reached Erode on March 11. the group visited 3 mosques.

march 13th was friday. that means the foreign mullahs reached their target places by then. I bet all these foreign mullahs had big meeting on march 6th and then dispersed to other places the following week. their numbers might be more than 50. Only few states busted them.

Thank you for posting this link. The instructions are quite lucid on how to make home made masks.

I believe India has urged its citizens who are in non-essential sectors to wear masks when they step out as new research shows it that virus may be spread by breathing (?)

India, US urge citizens to use 'homemade masks' after research says infected may spread virus by breathing

New Delhi: The Indian government has issued an advisory asking people to wear ‘homemade face covers’ shortly after the US government advised wearing face masks to its people lending support to new research which says the dangerous Covid-19 pathogen may spread through breathing.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in an 'Advisory on the use of Homemade Protective Cover for Face and Mouth', said the use of such masks will help in protecting the community at large and certain countries have claimed benefits of face covers for the general public.

"It is suggested that such people who are not suffering from medical conditions or having breathing difficulties may use the handmade reusable face cover, particularly when they step out of their house. This will help in protecting the community at large," the ministry said.

The TN Health Secretary Beela Rajesh just finished her daily presser , she has been giving daily updates on the Covid 19 situation everyday around 6 pm.

She seems to have relevant data in hand , handles questions patiently .

All in all gives an impression of a state government that is scaling up its efforts and has a grip on the evolving situation.

When you are dealing with aerosol born infection , covering source is much better than protecting receiver..
workplace protection factor is 1 if both source and receiver is uncovered.. If you cover face of receiver with tight surgical mask then protection factor is 2.. Covering source with tight fitting surgical mask gives protection factor 288 , even when receiver is uncovered.. If source is uncovered and receiver is using tightly sealed N95 mask workplace protection factor is 118..

Dr., I understand what you are saying but GoI is mandated that N95 masks should be used only for healthcare personals like yourself. Firstly, N95 masks are not available in pharmacies or online outlets. Forget N95, I think any kind of mask is not available in pharmacies. I believe all N95 & higher grade masks & other PPEs are meant for healthcare workers, probably security folks etc. and not for common citizens.

if the data in the next few weeks continues to show that there is no reinfection after recovering from the infection. Strategy could be- get younger patients to be recruited for all roles involving face to face care and this would probably mean we can use bipap/cpap machines which are much easier to use (by less trained staff) and very cheap also.. All plan currently seem to assume only ventilators to be used and BiPap are contra indicated.

The mobility trends report for India (pdf) compared to baseline starting beginning of February:
https://www.gstatic.com/covid19/mobility/2020-03-29_IN_Mobility_Report_en.pdf

Quick comparison between India and France :
Retail & recreation Mobility trends for places like restaurants, cafes, shopping centers, theme parks, museums, libraries, and movie theaters.

INDIA -77% FRANCE -88%

Grocery & pharmacy Mobility trends for places like grocery markets, food warehouses, farmers markets, specialty food shops, drug stores, and pharmacies.

INDIA -65% FRANCE -72%

Parks Mobility trends for places like national parks, public beaches, marinas, dog parks, plazas, and public gardens

INDIA -57% FRANCE -82%

So going by this admittedly partial view which is nevertheless quite insightful, the lockdown is working, but compliance is not strong enough in India. To get over the hill and flatten the curve, these numbers should be >80%.

I hope the government is using data above and also cell phone signals from towers to track population mobility

When citizens do not cooperate with govt instructions, and will follow instructions from other sources, it smacks of a parallel law-and-order framework, competing with GOI. Why does Yediyurappa need to meet with Muslim MLAs to get compliance? https://www.deccanherald.com/state/top- ... 20901.html
He is the CM of the state, and Modi is the PM. The CM and PM's instructions/orders should be enough. The COVID threat is now a national security issue. Tablighi Jamaat leadership complied only after receiving a special request from NSA. Enforcement resources (police) are scarce, it is a humongous diversion of resources to now (i) identify, (ii) locate and (iii) quarantine all the attendes and infected. This cannot be seen as a matter of simple non-compliance anymore. The scale of damage will be known 2-3 weeks from now.

Sir , I was trying to say that if coughing person covers his face with simple surgical mask then its twice better than receiver using N95 mask.. In other words one way of dealing with N95 shortage is to cover source with surgical masks which relatively better available..

found mha report,

2,100 foreigners visited India for Tablighi activities this year: MHA

The government on Tuesday said 2,100 foreigners visited India for Tablighi activities since January 1 and all of them first reported at Tablighi Jammat’s headquarters in Delhi's Nizamuddin, which has apparently become a coronavirus hotspot.

The home ministry also said a total of 303 Tablighi activists had symptoms of COVID-19 and were referred to different hospitals in Delhi.

In a statement, the home ministry also said so far 1,339 Tabligh Jamaat workers have been shifted to Narela, Sultanpuri and Bakkarwala quarantine facilities, as well as to LNJP, RGSS, GTB, DDU Hospitals in Delhi and AllMS, Jhajjar (Haryana).

Rest of them are being currently medically screened for COVID-19 infections.

It said it is estimated that from January 1 onwards, approximately 2,100 foreigners had visited India for Tablighi activities.

As on March 21, approximately 824 foreigners were dispersed at Markazes in different parts of the country, and 216 of them were staying at Nizamuddin Markaz.

Others might have left the country before the 21 days lockdown was announced on March 24, and came into effect from the next day.

Tablighi Jamaat workers, both foreigners as well Indians, indulge in preaching tours or 'Chilla' across the country throughout the year.

Various nationals, particularly from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Kyrgyzstan come for Tabligh activities.

All such foreign nationals normally report their arrival at Tablighi Markaz at Banglewali Mosque in Hazrat Nizamuddin, Delhi, the statement said.

From here, they are detailed for 'Chilla' activities to different parts of the country.

'Chilla' activities in all states are coordinated by district coordinators in different districts, who, in turn, in some states are supervised by 'state Amirs'.

The home ministry said a large number of Indian Tablighi Jamaat workers were also engaged in different parts of the country.

Details of the 824 foreigners had been shared on March 21 with all state police forces for identifying them, getting them medically screened and quarantining them, it said.

Besides, on March 28, all state police were advised to collect the names of Indian Tablighi Jamaat workers from the local coordinators, locate them on the ground, get them medically screened and quarantine them.

"So far, about 2,137 such persons have been identified in different states," the statement said.

They are being medically examined and quarantined. This process is still on and more such people would be identified and located.

"As on March 21, there were about 1,746 people staying in Hazrat Nizamuddin Markaz. Of these, 216 were foreigners and 1,530 were Indians.

On March 28, the home ministry also issued a detailed advisory to Chief Secretaries and DGPs of all states, as well as Commissioner of Police, Delhi, on this issue, the home ministry said.

Again, State DGPs were advised by the Director of Intelligence Bureau on March 29, to trace the movement of all such Tablighi workers in their area, ascertain the people coming in their contacts and take steps for their medical screening.

Many states have already started doing this, it said.

All the Tabligh Jamaat workers staying at Hazrat Nizamuddin Markaz are being medically screened since March 26.

So far 1,203 Tabligh Jamaat workers have been medically screened.

The ministry said the Bureau of Immigration has been sharing (since February 1) with state authorities, details of all international arrivals from affected countries based on self-declaration form filled-in by them.

In addition, since March 6, the Bureau of Immigration had also been sharing details of all the international arrivals (both Indians and foreigners) at all the international airports in the country to the concerned state, based on the permanent address mentioned in their passports, in case of Indians, and hotel address, in case of foreigners.

So we have 824 foreign mullahs in different parts of the country and 216 in delhi.

I honestly believe we need a release valve at times, this one is just what the doctor ordered. I am sure many of you have seen it before, but I simply loved it, not just because I am such a huge fan. The lyrics are absolutely spot on, especially in the context of India - just before the bass run comes in at 3:38.

The vocals are superbly sung and the mix is so close to the original it is unbelievable. Enough said, please enjoy the COVID Rhapsody, so ably performed by the "QUarantEpEN"

Loved it, oddly uplifting. Thanks doc.

I'm watching the whole supply/demand equation of this PPE thing in morbid fascination. Money talks louder than ever.

It is every nation for itself.

And Cheen is making most of it.

Unless India gets its own industry rolling, there won't be any on the world market.

Face masks from China intended for France 'hijacked' by US at the last minute

Coronavirus masks that France ordered from China were bought at the last minute by the United States as they waited to be loaded onto cargo planes, French officials have said.

"Americans pay three or four times the amount we pay, and in cash," said Jean Rottner, head of France's eastern region, one of the areas worst affected by the coronavirus outbreak, according to reports by France Info.

On Thursday, a planeload of Chinese-made face masks were bought up right on the tarmac just as the much needed protective gear was about to set off for France.

"We're working around the clock to ensure these masks arrive," says Rottner, blaming unfair competition for delays.

The United States, which now has the highest number of known cases of coronavirus in the world, is trying to procure any masks available, disrupting deliveries to other nations, another report by French daily Liberation indicated.

The east of France nonetheless received 2 million masks from China on Wednesday, to the delight of its president.

"I was very happy to see that airplane arriving in our region last night," Rottner said.

France has ordered more than one billion face masks, a quarter from China, as it battles the pandemic and currently has less than three weeks worth of supplies.

It is obvious that many Indians can barely conceal their disgust with Muslims.

Please go easy on the Tablighi Jamaat. Muslims in Indian and Pakistan are some of the most primitive people on Earth.

Have a look at how the flower of the Western enlightenment conduct themselves.

If they can't be shamed now into fixing their behaviour, they will pose bigger problems in the months to come when the infection spreads in India.

Right now, the urgent managerial task is to get to compliance, whatever the means. Y is doing the right thing, in working with influencers, this is not the time to rearrange power equations. That’s a political task.

The power distortions can be noted for now and addressed at a more opportune time.

Covid-19 testing, treatment free for Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries at private labs, empanelled hospitals
NEW DELHI: Testing and treatment for Covid-19 will be free of cost for Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries at private laboratories and empanelled hospitals, the National Health Authority (NHA) said on Saturday.
The NHA, which implements the national health insurance scheme, said this will strengthen the country's response to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
"Testing and treatment of Covid-19 is already available for free in public facilities. Now, more than 50 crore citizens, eligible under the health assurance scheme will be able to avail free testing through private labs and treatment for Covid-19 in empanelled hospitals," it said in a statement.
Hospitals empanelled under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) can use their authorised testing facilities or tie up with an authorised testing facility, the NHA said.
The Covid-19 tests will be carried out as per protocols of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and by private labs approved or registered by it, the authority said.
Treatment of Covid-19 by private hospitals will be covered under the AB-PMJAY, it said.

This is the basic expected dialog but trust in Mr Yeddi to be very strict with compliance. He is the only CM who handled the anti CAA protest in the best way.

324 positive out of 11K tests. 3% infection rate. Death today is 6.

People on tweeter seems to now understand the logic around "not enough testing".

It took a while, but it is good to see.
