Review of India's Covaxin shot underway, WHO says
A World Health Organization technical advisory group was reviewing data on India's Covaxin shot against COVID-19 on Tuesday with a decision on its emergency use listing likely soon, a spokesperson said.
"If all is in place and all goes well and if the committee is satisfied, we would expect a recommendation within the next 24 hours or so," Margaret Harris told journalists at a U.N. press briefing

WHO = Wuhan Health Organization. Trump had it right to pull the US out of WHO, and then it would have collapsed on its own.

At this point it is just political to deny EUA to covaxin.

Regardless of what anyone else is going to say. Indian scientific and technical resources have proven to be the most credible in terms of providing correct information and adapting to the changing circumstances.

This is just being done to cast aspersions on the Indian medical authorities.

The farce of "Kerala model"

A few months ago, a number of editorial articles kept defending the high Covid infection rates in Kerala based on the low death rates.

Over the last two months, the infection level have come down very significantly but the death rates have shot up. This to me is a clear evidence of Kerala govt. hiding the actual number of death. Now they are quietly moving people from active to death categories. Shameful

Vaccinations so far in Oct total 158 million doses done. The breakdown is 77m first doses, 81m second doses. This is the first month where 2nd doses will likely exceed first doses. In fact second dose total may exceed the September peak of 89 million. Cumulative total is almost 1050 million.

We're at almost 80% of eligible pop getting their first dose now - essentially on par with the developed world in this measure. Second dose is now 35% of eligible pop and rising faster - in around a month 50% of eligible pop should be fully vaxed given that the 2nd dose eligibility numbers are rising.

In the meanwhile, some countries have already approved Covaxin for travel purposes in the past few days

It's looking like big pharma and the pfizer-moderna activated ameriki/EU deep state have slowed down the who EUA approvals

in particular, Covaxin seems to have panicked them (big pharma and the pfizer-moderna) because no significant problems that have been reported even after 117 million doses were administered to Indians

FWIW: Sharing - UK study (This is very similar to other studies)
UK study finds vaccinated people easily transmit Delta variant in households

It is still very important to wear a mask (and avoid crowds) especially if you are traveling to see your family with younger children and yet non-vaccinated people.

PLEASE get vaccinated as soon as you are eligible. 5 years and up in USA will soon be eligible and vaccines widely available. In India - hundreds of millions of 12 years and up will soon be eligible.

(Personally feel very optimistic for India - No new worry-some variant appeared in October and if we do not see any worse variant in November, hope that between natural immunity and most adults getting a vaccine - new waves are not going to come).

(Apart from Kerala - things in India are going as well as expected.)

FWIW: Kerala is one (and only one) state where SUTRA graph looks different from other states and India in general (see figure in the above post of mine).

It may take scientists some time to study but it is not helpful to blame other states motives - their method may be criticized but there is NO clear evidence of significant hiding of data. One of the strength of these models is that it can see through deliberate misreporting of data. (Among other things - death rates always lag behind for various reasons).

The "Kerala Model" strategy - initially *much* touted by many - depended (I am simplifying) on good 'containment' and testing strategy modeled after that - this seem to help last year, the 'reach' parameter calculated was much lower than many other states, but this also kept the natural immunity among most people very low.. Delta changed all this in very significant way..as transmissivity was high the virus could not be 'contained' ..

As vaccinations rates go higher, things are going to change.. but at present the model and actual values in Kerala are pretty close.

Compare this to most other states, or India in general ..

The graph I posted shows more than doubling of deaths in one week when the infections rate have been coming down for about 2 month, shows either Kerala's covid is particularly different from the rest of the world (# of deaths peak about 2-3 weeks after the peak of infection), or there is some reclassification that is happening now.

^^^ Possible that I do not understand fully, and certainly do not claim to understand all that data but FWIW: In general statistically the average "lag" is a few weeks (the regression fit was something like 14 days, in some of the data we have seen - the global average with about 9-10 days with std dev about 4 days where data is good, there is also evidence of relationship between lag and age of the cases and in Kerala's case few weeks seems not out of ordinary).., of course, fuzziness of data (with reclassification etc) will be there..

(But looking at India's data for last year, in general - with a *very* few exceptions (which one can mathematically "see") - (In my opinion) the data is generally pretty good and consistent with time.
(Does NOT mean data is 'perfect', it does mean the the quality of data did not change from time to time)

- There was some analysis of Kerala data from SUTRA team some time ago .. and some recommendations given to the State, time will tell how good those recommendations were and how did it pan out.

Another example of leveraging synergies between India and United States to fight the pandemic!
( India’s biological_E is/was collaborating with Baylor College of Medicine to develop a COVID19 vaccine. - There is lot of push from local/state/scientists to Feds in US to support this cooperation - more help/support to Baylor came from GoI than their own government in US)

Feeling optimistic:
(Per Official/reputable numbers):

In USA: 80 % of adults now have at least one shot. (222 Millions)
In India: 79% of adults now have at least one shot. (736 Millions)

In USA: 70% of adults are now fully vaccinated. (About 192 Millions)
In India: 36% of adults are now fully vaccinated. (About 333 Millions)..
(This number, at the rate the second dose is being given, should be 50% by the end of the month)

US Number for fully vaccinated was 2M ( and India was 0), When vaccination program started in India.
---
Looking forward for - Children's vaccines getting approved and massively distributed in both countries - and vaccination program is rapidly expanded globally.

In secret vaccine contracts with governments, Pfizer took hard line in push for profit, report says
A report released Tuesday by Public Citizen, a consumer rights advocacy group that gained access to a number of leaked, unredacted Pfizer contracts, sheds light on how the company uses that power to “shift risk and maximize profits,” the organization argues.

The Manhattan-based pharmaceutical giant has maintained tight levels of secrecy about negotiations with governments over contracts that can determine the fate of populations. The “contracts consistently place Pfizer’s interests before public health imperatives,” said Zain Rizvi, the researcher who wrote the report.

Public Citizen found common themes across contracts, including not only secrecy but also language to block donations of Pfizer doses. Disputes are settled in secret arbitration courts, with Pfizer able to change the terms of key decisions, including delivery dates, and demand public assets as collateral.

While WHO drags on .. *pretending* to be considering Covaxin for 6+ months, Australia and a few other countries have joined those who recognized it.
May be it is time to bypass WHO and negotiate bilaterally with countries. India should discuss it with USA.

Meanwhile:
Texas-India vaccine diplomacy announces Covid-19 vaccine for $1.5 per dose
It will help vaccinate the world’s low-income countries in the coming months to fill the 9 billion gap, Hotez said.

The Covid-19 vaccine, which will be released for emergency use in India soon, will produce 100 million doses per month. It has been tough, but the most fulfilling activity I've ever been involved with,” he said.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) respects the Biological E, he said.

“It mentioned, once a vaccine is released in India, we will most likely move pretty close to do emergency assistance for global usage, so the world can benefit from it as well,” Hotez said.

“Our shared goal is to make this vaccine available not only for India, but all of the world’s low- and middle-income countries as a means to end the pandemic,” Hotez said during his keynote address.
Hotez said that this adventure would never have happened without the brilliance of Indian scientists and various Texas philanthropists, including Texas Children Hospital and M D Anderson Foundation, who raised USD 7 million for vaccine development.

Appreciating Indian vaccine producers amidst thunderous applause from over 600 attendees at the 22nd IACCGH gala, Hotez said, “India’s vaccine producers are actually “India’s gift to the world”.

Bharat Biotech's India-made Covaxin gets WHO nod for emergency use
NEW DELHI: The World Health Organization (WHO) gave emergency use approval for Bharat Biotech's Covaxin vaccine on Wednesday, reported PTI citing sources.
The approval by the Technical Advisory Group (TAG), an independent advisory panel of the WHO, was expected on October 26, but the WHO had deferred its decision and sought additional clarifications from Bharat Biotech to conduct a final risk-benefit assessment.
Earlier in the day, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation approved extension of shelf life of Covaxin up to 12 months, from date of manufacture. This approval is based on the availability of additional stability data, which was submitted to CDSCO.
Covaxin has demonstrated 77.8% effectiveness against symptomatic Covid-19 and 65.2% protection against the new Delta variant. In June, the company had said it concluded the final analysis of Covaxin efficacy from Phase 3 trials.
Covaxin and AstraZeneca's Covishield are the two widely used vaccines in India.
The WHO has already approved six vaccines for emergency use: AstraZeneca's Covishield, Moderna's mRNA-1273, Sinopharm's BBIBP-CorV, Sinovac's CoronaVac, Pfizer/BioNTech's Comirnaty, and Johnson & Johnson's vaccine.
Last week, the WHO had said the timeframe for it Emergency Use Listing procedure is dependant on how quickly a manufacturing company producing the vaccine is able to provide data required for the WHO to evaluate the vaccine's efficacy, safety, quality, and its suitability for low and middle-income countries.
Many countries have already approved Covaxin to ease international travel, including Guyana, Iran, Mauritius, Mexico, Nepal, Paraguay, Philippines, Zimbabwe, and Australia.

Modi is very careful with masking.

But here, (G20 and COP26) he is making a not so subtle and in your face point (literally) to the WHO and all those heads of various states/govts assembled.

He has been vaccinated with #COVAXIN (developed by India's Bharat Biotech) and he is flaunting it purposely.

Fairly standard language for EUAs and EULs . Everyone has it in some form - the latest Pfizer EUA for 5-12 year olds included . Not having such language and instead arguing 'completely safe' has legal consequences any company would want to avoid.

In matters like this, there are things we commonly know - that Covaxin is effective, safe and among the top 5 most widely used vaccines in the world (not counting Chinese herbal water) - and there are things that are legal language meant to safeguard the product and the certifying authority.

Meanwhile per recent US advisory - starting from Nov 8, fully vaccinated people vaccinated in India with Covaxin, (as well as Covidshield which was already approved by CDC guidelines) will be allowed. (And yes the digital vaccine certificate is okay :)).

Link: can enter US after WHO grants emergency use listing

With this, from what I know, fully vaccinated people with the following international vaccines are allowed to enter US smoothly - Single dose of J&J or 2 doses of Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Covidshield, Covaxin, BIBP/Sinopharm and Sinovac

Explains why the virus is not dying out, since the vaccines are not able to prevent asymptomatic transmission.

Study shows dramatic decline in effectiveness of all three COVID-19 vaccines over time
By the end of September, Moderna’s two-dose COVID-19 vaccine, measured as 89% effective in March, was only 58% effective.
The effectiveness of shots made by Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine, which also employed two doses, fell from 87% to 45% in the same period.
And most strikingly, the protective power of Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine plunged from 86% to just 13% over those six months.

Here is some data published in Nature about the latest round of Covid infections in UK.
But are vaccines are still holding up against death and serious illness?
The Delta variant’s mutations — combined with waning vaccine antibodies — are causing more breakthrough infections. But vaccines are still offering remarkable protection against hospitalization and death. A study at the University of Edinburgh, UK, found that the Pfizer–BioNTech and Oxford–AstraZeneca vaccines were 90% and 91% effective, respectively, at preventing death. Furthermore, around 75,000 people required hospital treatment for COVID-19 in the United Kingdom between the start of July and early October this year, compared with 185,000 between October 2020 and January 2021, when the number of infections was comparable but vaccines were less available.

Relative to the size of its population, the United Kingdom has around three times as many infections as the United States, but only two-thirds the daily deaths. “The amount of infection that is currently going on in the UK would be expected to have much worse consequences if replicated elsewhere,” says Hanage.
