UK study of 196 patients who came to ITU with China19 indicates obese or overweight coronavirus patients most in need of critical care.
Young fit and well also getting affected severely > virus is unpredictable
Men are getting serious form of illness, women getting away with milder form of illness (probably due to progesterone which has bronchodilator and vasodilator effect?)
Of course those who are aged and with preconditions are hit hard .

AI systems are too weak (i.e. too general). Targeted whittling down of synthetic molecules on the super computers of the world is what is needed. They are being put to work as we speak. This in-silico screening is embarrassingly parallel. So it is possible that we will come up with cures even. Cure is better than vaccine in the short term.

Robot scientists using AI can test more compounds, and do so with improved accuracy and reproducibility, and exhaustive, searchable record-keeping,” says systems biologist Steve Oliver of the University of Cambridge, a member of the group that developed Adam.

In January, the same team announced that Adam’s more advanced robot colleague, Eve, had discovered that triclosan, a common ingredient in toothpaste, could potentially treat drug-resistant malaria parasites. The researchers developed strains of yeast in which genes essential for growth had been replaced with their equivalents either from malaria parasites or from humans. Eve then screened thousands of compounds to find those that halted or severely slowed the growth of the strains dependent on the malaria genes but not those containing the human genes — to target the parasites while reducing the risk of toxicity. Early results were used to inform the selection of later candidates to screen.

This identified triclosan as affecting malaria-parasite growth by inhibiting the DHFR enzyme — also the target of the antimalarial drug pyrimethamine. However, resistance to pyrimethamine is common. The researchers showed that triclosan could act on DHFR even in pyrimethamine-resistant parasites.

Very impressive. I don't see much stereochemical analogue structure (although it would help to rotate the models of triclosan and tetrahydrofolate).

Chinese data is wrong (with one big spike, and rest flat).

check out SK and compare it with Italy and Iran (not complete yet). I assume SK is tapered down, and does Chinese claim. I guess the general data available is with proper measures it can take 8 to 12 weeks.

also, that report about 24 million mobile phones went dead. de-rate it 1/3rd.

Ok. So the Worldometer site shows that current as of 3/23/2020, total cases = 379080 globally with 16524 deaths. What is bothering me is that the %age of deaths in the total number of closed cases (260133) has been gently creeping up over the last 5-6 days. I noticed it was only about 10%, 3 or 4 days ago, now upto 14%. Why? Is it just Italy?

37 cured, 9 dead.

In US Coronavirus cases will easy hit 200k by end of month there is no social distancing happening in the south (packed beaches, park and churches).

On top of that Trump is getting angsty as he cares about only his $$$ and his businesses are taking a hit (as his stock portfolio). He is refusing to call for complete lock down and reportedly wants to reopen businesses even in hard hit areas. Not to mention many in GOP still think Coronavirus is a made up disease by liberal media.

^^^US is adding about 10-12K cases per day and half of them are coming from NY. The US is too large of a country geographically and COVID-19 cases vary greatly outside of the east and west coasts. Unemployment is the big concern where the US could face over 30% unemployment which will not help anyone.

Easier to update death counts than test counts. Further once things hit a critical mass of community transmission, testing is a time consuming distraction with the onus being 5o urgently enforce a lockdown to flatten the curve. Today’s hospital patients were the ones infected 2 weeks ago.

Dear @narendramodi sir, here is a suggestion from Uganda- country which reported its first #COVID19 case today- they are impounding passports of everyone who are sent for mandatory quarantine and passports are returned only after mandatory 14 days isolation period is over.
Cancel a few passports to show intent.
A good suggestion had it been implemented in mid Feb... taking down phone number and installing an app on returnees to track their position, along with calls should have been done.

Taiwan implements cellphone geofencing of quarantined patients, notifies authorities when individuals move out of home or turn off phones

Something doable in India - geofenced people get called the moment they step out and are told to go home, with phone connections restricted outside geofenced area.

First Made-in-India COVID-19 test kit by Mylab gets commercial approval
Pune-based molecular diagnostics company Mylab Discovery Solutions Pvt Ltd, which specialises in molecular diagnostic kits has developed first made-in-India test kit for COVID-19 in a record time of six weeks. The kit -- Mylab PathoDetect COVID-19 Qualitative PCR kit -- is the first one to receive commercial approval from the Indian FDA/ Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). Besides, Mylab is the only Indian company to have achieved 100 per cent sensitivity and specificity in the ICMR evaluation.
IIRC, there were about 9 kits under approval process out of which about 4-5 were Indian kits. Hope they all are easy, fast and cheap and can be scaled up.

A close relative of mine knows one of the directors of MyLab. As per him, they are planning to complete production of 1 lakh test kits in a weeks time. Their entire team is in the production facility. The rapid screening test allows the test results to be displayed in about 2.5 hours as compared to the 7 hours by other kits.

Before there was community spread, countries like S Korea, China and japan used to lot of testing plus everyone concentrated on international arrivals. What this meant is that it was blanket testing and asymptomatic or mild cases were also caught and treated. Now, once the community spread has started, blanket testing can no more be done and the ones getting added to the statistics are already reporting to hospital critically ill. This is why the ratio will be bad next. I suspect the new people being counted as infected are all coming in to the ER and will be 50:50 chances.

The "Hydroxychloroquine" might be to block the usage of CD147 by the corona virus, same as malaria. This is something new that corona virus uses to invade the cells apart from ACE2 . I think this is why "Hydroxychloroquine" works initially because it blocks the route used by malaria, thus effectively reducing the rate of intrusion to the cell and helping the cell to fight back but once the cells has been largely infected, it is useless to close the second door. This might be the reason China is also having lower infection. They might have found a way to reduce the rate of infection initially but them being China want their price to disclose it. This might be why Iran is also claiming that they have found a Chinese medicine which they wont share with others. The advisory by ICMR to use this by healthcare professionals and close contacts of infected might also be pointing to this that use this to reduce the cell infection rate and help immunity fight it out.

Not a doc. Will not be accurate but will convey the process nevertheless.

A virus is an obligate parasite because it is obliged to get into a host cell to function. The RNA material of a virus like Sars-CoV-2 infects by injecting itself into the cell. How do they do that? There are receptors (which are proteins) on the surface of a cell which can allow certain types of molecules to attach to them. These extracellular molecules have complementary proteins on their surface which help the docking. The coronavirus has got what are called spike proteins. The epithelial cells which line the throat, mucous membranes, intestines etc allow attachment of these Spike Proteins on the surface of the coronavirus. Once attached, the RNA material is injected into the cell's cytoplasm where it reproduces itself. This is the infection.

AFAIK, there are two approaches being attempted now, both involving these spike proteins. In one attempt, the spike protein has been sequenced (i.e its building blocks are understood). A new RNA (a messenger RNA) built with instructions to produce this spike protein, will be used as the vaccine. When this vaccine is injected, our immune system produces antibodies to detect and destroy the spike protein. Remember the spike protein by itself does not cause infection, only the viral RNA which is not injected. Here the virus itself is not used.

In the other approach, the virus is used to infect animals, produce antibodies which are then injected into human beings.

In any case I have turned on cell phone tracking for myself and family for the duration of the lockdown advisory and I personally feel that google may be able to use my data and perhaps data of many others to automatically do contact tracing. Perhaps an App can be developed to automate this which shows which tracks people (self report of status) and use that information to give idea of which areas are high risk. Just like a traffic congestion map
