But current stat is 32008 Infected & 273 deaths.
Vast geographically spread out nation, still 32k in the early stage (as such it begin later there) is a bigggg number.

Israel also, considering total population, small size and military discipline of Yehudii desh they do have quite high numbers (12855 & 148).
Could be they are warming up as spring sets in?

There was a Chinese study that estimated floor and ceiling values for the ambient temperature in which the virus spreads the best. Most of Russia would have been below the floor value in winter..
That's correct, Only good thing with Russia currently, is the fatality rate is low. Partly the result of a younger population - also a high number of doctors, nurses and hospital beds, per million, all over the country (not just the big cities),

While the total number of confirmed cases are growing, the rate of growth of active cases is now 7.1%. So these are doubling every 10 days. Good!

9PM update from ICMR today (18th):
Image

Massive number of new cases, with significant spike (after a few quiet days) in Delhi alone. It may be too early to breathe a sigh of relief over the doubling rate going up to 7-8 days. I have a feeling that with GJ, RJ, MP, DL seeing significant increases, UP despite good governance remaining a risk, and WB CM going fully rogue, the worst may be yet to come.

This site, while not official, has useful data on trends:
https://www.covid19india.org/

GJ and MP seem to have suddenly surged past TN in the list.

BTW, one of the Tableeghis released after treatment in TN today gave the ISIS salute!

Swedish expert: why lockdowns are the wrong policy
UK policy on lockdown and other European countries are not evidence-based
The correct policy is to protect the old and the frail only
This will eventually lead to herd immunity as a “by-product”
The initial UK response, before the “180 degree U-turn”, was better
The Imperial College paper was “not very good” and he has never seen an unpublished paper have so much policy impact
The paper was very much too pessimistic
Any such models are a dubious basis for public policy anyway
The flattening of the curve is due to the most vulnerable dying first as much as the lockdown
The results will eventually be similar for all countries
Covid-19 is a “mild disease” and similar to the flu, and it was the novelty of the disease that scared people.
The actual fatality rate of Covid-19 is the region of 0.1%
At least 50% of the population of both the UK and Sweden will be shown to have already had the disease when mass antibody testing becomes available
The stanford survey showed only 5% were infected even if that is 80 times more than the known cases.

^ LA also locked down pretty early. Sweden and NYC have seen the virus running rampant for a good while before lockdown (in the case of Sweden, that lockdown hasn't come yet).

For a better comparison, look at the Gangelt (Germany) and Robbia (Italy) studies.

This 'herd immunity to save the economy' concept works only if everybody does it, or in isolation perhaps only for a large country like the US. Once most of the significant markets like the US and EU have shut down, everybody's economy is screwed including those of smaller countries, whether they lock down or not.

Is this virus an Urban disease? It originated from city, and all over the world, voluntary "self quarantine" failed where urban people or travelers simply didn't follow it and allowed it to spread instead. It needed an compulsory measures for lock-down. And yet, the poor & rural side are often maligned, and seen as uneducated, unhygienic and the default culprits for any pandemics.

Random but considered notes:

Herd immunity almost took Boris Johnson's life. If the population is fundamentally not the fittest, herd immunity shall kill people in large numbers. Survivors may be those who are able to survive that particular ailment, not necessarily a guarantee against surviving future ailment. If people are really serious about Herd Immunity, have people eat - ginger, garlic, turmeric, neem, ajwain, jeera, and so on daily. Cut down on non veg. Immunity increases automatically. Otherwise it is not 'Herd Immunity' but just 'Great Escape from Virus Slaughterhouse'.

Sweden has population density of 22.43/sqkm and has very different socializing patterns as compared to others. What may work for Sweden may be absolute disaster for others. Belgium is 379/sqkm, Netherlands 409/sqkm, Germany 234 / sqkm, Spain 92.4/sqkm, Italy 200/sqkm, France 118/sqkm, United Kingdom 279.5/sqkm. Do we see a pattern there? https://worldpopulationreview.com/count ... opulation/

GOI should publish detailed figures on cultural, religious background of China Virus cases in India. If there are specific cultural or religious patterns, they should be called out and advised against, not hidden thereby exacerbating future situations. 4,300 cases out of 14,300 cases being Tablighi illustrating the point.

I don't know if we can call it foolishness or arrogance or smartness for the Swedish to believe that they have a better brain, than 10 largest GDP of the world who are in lockdown, preferred to destroy their own economy, over saving the lives of their citizens.

It is a tough argument to prove that there are no smart people among humankind's richest countries.

And it is also naive to think that other countries would allow entry to Swedish citizens in their country, with "herd" immunity experiments ravaging among their population.

Lockdown did NOT prevent 35K deaths in US, nearly 20K in Italy, Spain & now France & UK. These countries are trying to save the next 35K & 20K.

Chinese help for virus gets wary reception in France
Issued on: 18/04/2020 Paris (AFP)

An operation by France's Chinese community to help the diaspora during the coronavirus outbreak by distributing masks, disinfectant and gloves has prompted questions and legal problems for some of its backers. Sceptical of the French government's response to the epidemic, the Chinese embassy, business leaders and ex-pat associations have handed out so-called "COVID kits", masks and other protective equipment to their compatriots. But this landed some in trouble with the law.
Among the masks given out were the highly sought-after FFP2 type, which in times of critical supply shortages have been reserved for medical personnel on the frontlines of France's coronavirus battle. Early in the outbreak, France had requisitioned all face mask stocks and production for distribution to doctors, nurses and caregivers. Yet on April 5, police in Paris detained two representatives of Chinese associations for possession of some 15,000 masks. Two days later, three students were arrested while handing out Chinese embassy-sponsored "COVID kits" in the Paris suburbs, an operation which caused people to amass in contravention of France's strict social distancing regulations to stem the virus spread. FFP2 masks were included in some of the kits, along with protective gloves, disinfectant wipes and Chinese traditional medicine.
The Chinese embassy in Paris insisted in a statement that there was nothing illegal. It was doing "its best... to defend the rights and legitimate interests of Chinese compatriots in France."

If we take there are 80 unknown infected cases for every one confirmed case as told by the stanford study, NYC must be 120% infected. If we take their lower limit at 40%, NYC should be 60% infected.

The death toll is 8500 and it might be around 15000 by the time the current infected cases are closed. That would be 0.18% of the 8 million NYC population if there are no more cases.

I admire your spirit in the face of what is arguably the most challenging health condition as you embark on a transplantation surgery, for whatever organ that is. My best wishes for a successful conclusion of the surgery whenever that happend and a long and healthy life thereafter.

Here he says #Covid_19 has been created by splicing #BAT RNA with #HIV #virus #DNA in a Laboratory.
He says #Indian researchers discovered this as well but their paper was removed.

Coronavirus man-made in Wuhan lab: Nobel laureate

2008 Nobel Prize for Medicine Winning Dr Luc Montagnier Says Covid-19 was “manipulated” for HIV Research
With my colleague, bio-mathematician Jean-Claude Perez, we carefully analyzed the description of the genome of this RNA virus,” explains Luc Montagnier, interviewed by Dr Jean-François Lemoine for the daily podcast at Pourquoi Docteur, adding that others have already explored this avenue: Indian researchers have already tried to publish the results of the analyses that showed that this coronavirus genome contained sequences of another virus, … the HIV virus (AIDS virus), but they were forced to withdraw their findings as the pressure from the mainstream was too great.

Bengal sitting on a coronavirus time bomb
Serious differences have emerged in Kolkata and parts of West Bengal over the way the state government is reportedly suppressing facts relating to people affected by the deadly coronavirus. The crisis has snowballed into a huge controversy between the Bengal government—ruled by the Trinamool Congress—and doctors who are now taking to social media platforms to highlight what they claim is the handiwork of the state censors who have clamped down on doctors and asked them not to declare deaths from coronavirus unless certified by a state government-nominated panel.
The move of the state government, expectedly, has come under fire from officials of the Kolkata-wing of the Indian Council of Medical Research, who have blamed the TMC-led government for slowing down the mandatory tests related to the deadly virus. Worse, the state government did not respond even after the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Central government declared the whole of Kolkata city and some of its districts as hotspots (areas of possible concentration of coronavirus patients). “It is requested that the states should utilise the extended lockdown period to the maximum extent to convert the hotspots (identified by the red colour) to orange and green zones,” a senior official of the ministry said in a note. But, sadly, it is not working in Kolkata and parts of Bengal.
Recently, television news channels have shown videos, claiming bodies being disposed of by cops and health workers in the dead of the night; young doctors—hiding their identity—have taken to social media platforms to say how they were pushed to sign death certificates by their seniors. The junior doctors further said many hospitals in Kolkata and across the state lacked proper gear to handle such patients and the levels of infection were high and spreading fast because there were large-scale violations across the city and the state. “We have many patients who are ill and desperate for medical care and supplies,” said a young doctor requesting anonymity.
Another doctor, who circulated his message through his colleagues, said he was aghast to see how a pregnant woman, who was declared Covid-positive, was handled by the Medical College in north Kolkata: “She was in the labour room and eventually had a caesarean operation. She came in contact with over 50 nurses, doctors and paramedics. The labour room is overcrowded, each bed has three patients. So the woman would have infected many who came in her contact. Once it was known that she came from Eden Hospital (in the Medical College) on College Street, the state government officials sealed the Eden Hospital. The entire news was suppressed. First, it was announced 50 paramedics will be isolated even though their numbers were much higher. Then, the number was reduced to 25. And then, all those paramedics were sent back to work. In another case, a Corona-infected patient was pushed into the general ward because the hospital had not developed a Covid ward. At each step, the state government officials are telling us to hush up figures. We do not have enough protective gear. As a result, doctors, nurses and paramedics are all highly exposed to the virus. Worse, they are being told to do their duty, they are not being medically checked. If this is happening in the heart of the city, you can imagine what could be happening outside Kolkata.”
The doctor said some of the whistleblowers were reprimanded by police for warning others about the current crisis in Kolkata. Many were forced to delete their posts. This chokehold on information heralds a new stage in the state government’s response to the huge coronavirus, many doctors claim. They say they cannot disclose their names in the fear of losing their jobs.
The doctors say the official tally of infected patients is far lower than the true scale of the outbreak across the state. “I have a feeling that the state government is telling us that the discussions online are entering into the zone of perceived sensitivity for the state,” says Dr Ranabir Sen, a private practitioner. Dr Sen said earlier, uninhibited reporting provided valuable public knowledge about the outbreak. “It is very clear to us we need more supplies and more diagnostic equipment. So let’s get those so that we can all work better. We need to save Bengal from a bigger crisis and the state government needs to realise it fast. There is a benefit of allowing social media critique. You get to know what is wrong and what is right. But in this state that is also getting slimmer.”
There are other problems in the state. The director of the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), the primary testing facility in West Bengal, said his institute was getting fewer samples of Covid-19 to test than it was getting in the initial days of the outbreak. “We are all waiting here to do the tests but the samples are not coming. It dropped to 20 last week. During the initial days of the outbreak, we got about 90-100 samples to test. We really do not know what is happening,” NICED Director Shanta Dutta told this reporter in a telephonic interview. She further said NICED Kolkata had over 27,000 testing kits, enough for the whole of eastern region, but the decision to send the number of samples to a particular laboratory is taken by the West Bengal government. She said she was surprised at the recent comments of the state government blaming the Centre for a “shortage of kits”. Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on 11 April, told reporters in Kolkata that the city had only 40 testing kits. “We are waiting with the kits, we really do not know what is happening,” said Dutta.
According to the state’s Health Bulletin released on 13 April, the number of persons tested for Covid-19 in the state stands at 2,793. The number of tests done till 12 April as per the state bulletin was 2,523 and till 11April was 2,286. Thus 507 samples, which is about 18% of all Covid-19 samples tested in the state, have been carried out since 12 April. The number of testing centres in the state has increased to seven, which include five government facilities and two private. NICED has given about 7,500 testing kits to the West Bengal government. The total number of active cases in Bengal till 12 April was 110. Now, instead of giving the total number of infections in West Bengal, the state health department has been giving active cases in the state, which exclude those who have recovered from the viral infection or have expired. The number of 15 active infections in a day is the highest in the state so far. 270 samples were tested in two weeks until 15 April, which was also one of the highest in the state so far.
This is not all. The state government says seven people have died from corona in the state, the number hotly contested by doctors and paramedics who claim the state government is not sharing details of those dying from coronavirus.
“What is this hush-hush business?” asked Dr Archana Majumdar, a top health officer in the state who said she was aghast at the looming crisis. “Let me cite one example. It happened this week at one of the hospitals. A patient, named Sudipta Mukherjee, got admitted and eventually died around 1004 hours. She was 43 years old and her body was sent out of the hospital as a Hepatitis B case. Another patient, suspected to be a Covid-19 carrier, came into the hospital. Nurses and paramedics refused to touch her, saying they do not have any protective gear. Eventually, one gear was organised and the patient was asked to put on the gear and was sent to the general ward. Why is it we are not sending patients to the wards identified for positive corona cases and suspected corona cases?” asked Dr Majumdar.
She said she was seeing these restrictions being accompanied by intensified propaganda. The message being: We get that this is a grave problem, and we are fixing it. “Actually, state government officials are working overtime to hide the severity of the disease.”
Doctors complain that state authorities’ approval is needed for each test, and is regularly refused. As a result, patients suspected to be suffering from Covid-19 are not being isolated soon enough.
“If you suspect Covid and send the samples, they are routinely refused, there are times when the report returns after five days,” said Dr Arjun Dasgupta from the West Bengal Doctors Forum, which represents 19,000 doctors.
Worse, services in at least four major government hospitals and two private facilities in Kolkata have been hit after doctors and nurses came into contact with patients who later tested positive.
And then, there are doctors who are unanimous that coronavirus deaths are not being fully reported, with only a state-appointed committee allowed to declare if a patient has died from Covid-19.
Dr Sujan Chakraborty, a CPM legislator and a trained biomedical scientist, took to Facebook to highlight how the health officials of the state did not list all the seven patients who died after being declared Covid-19. “The list shows only two, what happened to the rest? Why not mention them in the list. Why fudge numbers?” asked Dr Chakraborty.
Many in Kolkata say the state government is working to re-establish control over the narrative by releasing expensive advertisements to news channels; filmmakers have been encouraged to make films to highlight the state’s government’s coronavirus-related health operations. Arindam Sil, a top filmmaker, has started directing a movie, titled Ek Din Jhor Theme Jabe (One day the Storm will End). The lines, interestingly, are from a poem penned by Mamata Banerjee herself. Some of the TMC MPs, Nursat Jahan and Mimi Chakraborty, will act in the film. But in reality movies—claim critics—will not work. Worse, the fact that authorities in Bengal are slowing down the detection of coronavirus cases with a cumbersome, bureaucratic testing process is, in turn, putting health workers at risk.
The situation in Bengal is very grave, top health officials told this reporter. “Besides Kolkata, the districts of Midnapur, North and South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Malda and Dinajpur are sitting on a ticking time bomb,” said Abishkar, a social worker who has been travelling across the state with relief material. Reuters said in a report that at around 3,000 tests for more than 90 million people, West Bengal has done just 33.7 tests per million, compared to a national average of around 156.9 per million, and 442 per million in Rajasthan.
“Take a look at what happened at the Howrah hospital where 17 nurses and four doctors tested positive only because they had no protective gear. As a result, the whole hospital was shut down. If you are having such a crisis in Kolkata, then you can easily realise what is the case in the districts where the hospitals are totally ill-equipped to handle such crises. Worse, members of a particular community are just not following health warnings and are congregating for prayers and routinely visiting crowded markets without any protective gear. The cops are unable to control them,” alleged Abishkar.
“There are places where the medical centres have no doctors, no nurses, no paramedics. This is a very dangerous situation. The doctors are flatly refusing to work saying they are at risk without the protective gear. In many places across the state, riots have broken out over distribution of food through the public distribution system (PDS). The situation needs to change. All I hope is that the people have the right to hold the government accountable rather than to be managed. I want everything to become better in Bengal,” added Abishkar.
Worried about the situation over the food distribution crisis, the state government—through a recent order —sent Manoj Agarwal, Principal Secretary, Food & Supplies, on compulsory waiting till further orders. The state government also transferred the district magistrates of Darjeeling, and West Burdwan after similar incidents were reported.

^^ This is putting the entire country at risk - we can't even isolate WB state by sealing the state borders without impacting the NE states. Can the centre keep an open corridor of a few districts like Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and Alipurduar alone so essential supplies to the rest of the NE can be ensured while WB is locked down for some more time? I can only imagine how Malda or Murshidabad would be faring at this point. Scary.

Not sure what didi's end goal here? Make the jamatis' impact on corona cases across the country pale in comparison to WB's numbers so the criticism stops? Or force the centre to invoke Art 356 and claim sympathy in the upcoming elections? I can't think of any other reason to be this callous. And if that's true, it's sad to see politics come into handling an epidemic. I have lost whatever little respect I had for Mamata. I feel for the people in WB, who cannot even raise their voice against this incompetence.

The mission has been focused on identifying and fixing infected rather than finger pointing, and with this in mind the cooperation of some leading muslims jamaatis who can be reasoned with (yes, evidently such people exist) are being co-opted in the struggle. This couldn't happen if the situation got politicized. Numbers are in control now, and recoveries are fantastic - look at the recovered vs dead numbers in any tracker and you will see how TN's numbers are approaching the leader Kerala in this regard; and also see how terrible the numbers look for MH, Delhi and some other states. BTW, this is not a BJP run state; the CM who came from nowhere is suddenly the leader people are looking up to, along with the Health minister & secretary. TN has also handled the migrant worker issue very well, with close contact with origin states CMs as well as destination state CM (MH/Mumbai has TN workers; but mostly it's outstate workers in TN).

Didi is doing exactly the opposite. I have no idea what's going on in her mind. She lives in her dreamland and has a fantasy world-view. She has forgotten that the virus doesn't take orders from her. This can't end well without either imposing presidents rule, or cordoning off the state from the rest of the country, which unfortunately will affect the NE terribly.

In karnataka, one driver died of heart attack yesterday just by knowing that his passengers were corona positive. His tests later came positive but was perfectly doing fine till he got the news. I think stress of knowing corona positive itself is a very large contributing factor to these deaths.

Oh waou... the Perfect Storm. We need similar analyses of patients who recover to try and figure out how the virus was overcome in each individual case and see if any patterns emerge. Only then can we more from dealing with the virus from a defensive posture to an agressive stand. But this will take a lot of time.

Absolutely idiotic and incompetent handling of the eCommerce rules.

The eCommerce rules from the start have been implemented (or rather interrupted) in an arbitrary and counter-productive manner (instead of leveraging it with proper safegaurds like in Singapore, Malaysia etc to ensure essential supplies to urban areas), but this takes the cake.

Govt gave indication to eCommerce providers that regular service could be resumed (at least in some areas) from the 20th, and that movements of all goods (not just "essentials", the interpretation of which is a another chaotic mess in itself) would be allowed across state borders. With that in mind, those companies have been working round the clock to get supplies, stocks, logistics in place, coordinated with sellers etc, only to have it arbitrarily rescinded hours before the deadline.

With this kind of incompetent and schizophrenic implementation by baboons, no wonder SMEs and entrepreneurs find the going tough.

Yes, TN would be mostly out of the woods by now if not for the jehadis (one of whom, on being released from quarantine/treatment yesterday made an ISIS salute on camera).

Kerala did a decent job, and Bhilwara too managed to pull back after initially not controlling it, but the reason those are hyped by NDTV, Rajdeep and their ilk is due to PR and political leanings.

TN's handling, while not perfect (I think the ministers spend too much time on PR and photo-ops, albeit for the local TN audience and couldn't care less about national and foreign 'liberal media') has done an excellent job so far and gets little credit in the media etc.

The below article has a good summary, worth a read in full:
https://theprint.in/health/tamil-nadu-i ... el/403663/
Out of the total cases, over 1,134 — around 90 per cent — are linked to the Tablighi Jamaat congregation held in New Delhi, Dr Beela Rajesh, Tamil Nadu Health Secretary, told ThePrint.

So what worked for the Tamil Nadu government in preventing the spread of the virus?

“(It is) Not the Bhilwara model,” said Rajesh.

The ‘Bhilwara model’ in Rajasthan has been so successful in curbing the spread of Covid-19 in a hotspot that the central government has asked states to replicate its mantra of “ruthless containment”.

But Tamil Nadu, Rajesh said, is preventing the spread of the virus through “collective action by government machinery”, aggressive contact-tracing and by quarantining over a lakh people.

“Bhilwara model was designed after cases started erupting. The model that Tamil Nadu followed was designed when the first individual was found positive. We didn’t wait for clusters to develop. The collective action by the government machinery to contain the spread for every single positive case worked for us,” she added.

Rajesh said the state followed an aggressive contact-tracing, testing and surveillance model, which worked well along with the national lockdown.

“Our contact tracing was at another level, which put over a lakh in isolation,” she added.
“Our data is similar to the national and global trend. High death is among elderly, 69+ individuals and those with comorbidities. We have also noticed that people survive more on oxygen therapy than when put on ventilators,” said Rajesh.

Interesting data ...

20 lakh ‘made in India’ testing kits per month from May
NEW DELHI: India is set to locally produce 10 lakh kits per month each of RT-PCR testing and rapid antibody detection tests for Covid-19 from May, reducing dependence on imports amid soaring global demand caused by the pandemic. Efforts in areas of diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines are also being monitored on a war footing, health ministry said. The present ventilator manufacturing capacity in India is 6,000 a month.

The Centre along with states have also expedited work on dedicated Covid hospitals. Till Friday, a total 1,919 dedicated Covid-19 facilities were identified across the country with 1,73,746 isolation beds and 21,806 ICU beds. The 1,919 facilities include 672 dedicated Covid hospitals for serious patients needing tertiary care and 1,247 dedicated Covid healthcare centres for patients with moderate symptoms.

“Production of ancillary support devices such as personal protective equipment, oxygen concentrators, ventilators, CSIR engineering labs is being augmented by indigenous designs of Sree Chitra Tiurumalai Institute of Medical Science and Technology (SCTIMST) under Department of Science and Technology,” health ministry joint secretary Lav Agarwal said.

While India received five lakh rapid antibody testing kits from China on Thursday after a long delay, the kits were immediately distributed to districts on the basis of high case burden, officials said. The health ministry has also shared forecasting tools with states and district administrators for better planning of infrastructure across different Covid facilities based on the assessment of caseloads.
We continue to expand the Covid facilities
