Wuhan Coronavirus Resource Thread

Post by tandav »

Better safe than sorry! the Wuhan Corona Virus epidemic has a good chance 30% or more of filtering into India sooner or later within 3-4 weeks. Even though we have instituted some quarantine measures many travellers from China could already be present in India.

We will track the progress of the epidemic and also share preventive, precautionary measures to be followed by citizens

How about a little of the opposite viewpoint?

Worry about flu, not coronavirus
Quarantines worked with SARS, once Chinese officials quit hiding the extent of the country’s 2002 outbreak. That is the route China is going with now, quickly instituting a massive travel ban on Wuhan that later expanded to include much of Hubei province. But some experts have criticized China’s response to the new coronavirus as excessive and likely ineffective.
Don't get overwhelmed by coronavirus hype

The borderline or full-blown panic displayed by Chinese officials is certainly puzzling. Maybe they really bio-engineered something. Or maybe, as the first article above suggests, they are (mega)overreacting.

We tend to interpret every Chinese action as that of supermen. Maybe Chinese officials are instead, at least sometimes, just bumbling buffoons?

Inside the Chinese lab poised to study world's most dangerous pathogens | NATURE
Maximum-security biolab is part of plan to build network of BSL-4 facilities across China.

23 February 2017

Wuhan, China

Hazard suits hang at the National Bio-safety Laboratory, Wuhan, the first lab on the Chinese mainland equipped for the highest level of biocontainment.

A laboratory in Wuhan is on the cusp of being cleared to work with the world’s most dangerous pathogens. The move is part of a plan to build between five and seven biosafety level-4 (BSL-4) labs across the Chinese mainland by 2025, and has generated much excitement, as well as some concerns.

Some scientists outside China worry about pathogens escaping, and the addition of a biological dimension to geopolitical tensions between China and other nations. But Chinese microbiologists are celebrating their entrance to the elite cadre empowered to wrestle with the world’s greatest biological threats.

“It will offer more opportunities for Chinese researchers, and our contribution on the BSL‑4-level pathogens will benefit the world,” says George Gao, director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Key Laboratory of Pathogenic Microbiology and Immunology in Beijing. There are already two BSL-4 labs in Taiwan, but the National Bio-safety Laboratory, Wuhan, would be the first on the Chinese mainland.

The lab was certified as meeting the standards and criteria of BSL-4 by the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) in January. The CNAS examined the lab’s infrastructure, equipment and management, says a CNAS representative, paving the way for the Ministry of Health to give its approval. A representative from the ministry says it will move slowly and cautiously; if the assessment goes smoothly, it could approve the laboratory by the end of June.

BSL-4 is the highest level of biocontainment: its criteria include filtering air and treating water and waste before they leave the laboratory, and stipulating that researchers change clothes and shower before and after using lab facilities. Such labs are often controversial. The first BSL-4 lab in Japan was built in 1981, but operated with lower-risk pathogens until 2015, when safety concerns were finally overcome.

The expansion of BSL-4-lab networks in the United States and Europe over the past 15 years — with more than a dozen now in operation or under construction in each region — also met with resistance, including questions about the need for so many facilities.

The Wuhan lab cost 300 million yuan (US$44 million), and to allay safety concerns it was built far above the flood plain and with the capacity to withstand a magnitude-7 earthquake, although the area has no history of strong earthquakes. It will focus on the control of emerging diseases, store purified viruses and act as a World Health Organization ‘reference laboratory’ linked to similar labs around the world. “It will be a key node in the global biosafety-lab network,” says lab director Yuan Zhiming.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences approved the construction of a BSL-4 laboratory in 2003, and the epidemic of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) around the same time lent the project momentum. The lab was designed and constructed with French assistance as part of a 2004 cooperative agreement on the prevention and control of emerging infectious diseases. But the complexity of the project, China’s lack of experience, difficulty in maintaining funding and long government approval procedures meant that construction wasn’t finished until the end of 2014.

The lab’s first project will be to study the BSL-3 pathogen that causes Crimean–Congo haemorrhagic fever: a deadly tick-borne virus that affects livestock across the world, including in northwest China, and that can jump to people.

Future plans include studying the pathogen that causes SARS, which also doesn’t require a BSL-4 lab, before moving on to Ebola and the West African Lassa virus, which do. Some one million Chinese people work in Africa; the country needs to be ready for any eventuality, says Yuan. “Viruses don’t know borders.”

Gao travelled to Sierra Leone during the recent Ebola outbreak, allowing his team to report the speed with which the virus mutated into new strains1. The Wuhan lab will give his group a chance to study how such viruses cause disease, and to develop treatments based on antibodies and small molecules, he says.

The opportunities for international collaboration, meanwhile, will aid the genetic analysis and epidemiology of emergent diseases. “The world is facing more new emerging viruses, and we need more contribution from China,” says Gao. In particular, the emergence of zoonotic viruses — those that jump to humans from animals, such as SARS or Ebola — is a concern, says Bruno Lina, director of the VirPath virology lab in Lyon, France.

Many staff from the Wuhan lab have been training at a BSL-4 lab in Lyon, which some scientists find reassuring. And the facility has already carried out a test-run using a low-risk virus.

But worries surround the Chinese lab, too. The SARS virus has escaped from high-level containment facilities in Beijing multiple times, notes Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. Tim Trevan, founder of CHROME Biosafety and Biosecurity Consulting in Damascus, Maryland, says that an open culture is important to keeping BSL-4 labs safe, and he questions how easy this will be in China, where society emphasizes hierarchy. “Diversity of viewpoint, flat structures where everyone feels free to speak up and openness of information are important,” he says.

Yuan says that he has worked to address this issue with staff. “We tell them the most important thing is that they report what they have or haven’t done,” he says. And the lab’s international collaborations will increase openness. “Transparency is the basis of the lab,” he adds.

The plan to expand into a network heightens such concerns. One BSL-4 lab in Harbin is already awaiting accreditation; the next two are expected to be in Beijing and Kunming, the latter focused on using monkey models to study disease.

Lina says that China’s size justifies this scale, and that the opportunity to combine BSL-4 research with an abundance of research monkeys — Chinese researchers face less red tape than those in the West when it comes to research on primates — could be powerful. “If you want to test vaccines or antivirals, you need a non-human primate model,” says Lina.

But Ebright is not convinced of the need for more than one BSL-4 lab in mainland China. He suspects that the expansion there is a reaction to the networks in the United States and Europe, which he says are also unwarranted. He adds that governments will assume that such excess capacity is for the potential development of bioweapons.

“These facilities are inherently dual use,” he says. The prospect of ramping up opportunities to inject monkeys with pathogens also worries, rather than excites, him: “They can run, they can scratch, they can bite.”

Trevan says China’s investment in a BSL-4 lab may, above all, be a way to prove to the world that the nation is competitive. “It is a big status symbol in biology,” he says, “whether it’s a need or not.”

What are the protective and preventive steps that can be taken. My understanding is that Standard cloth and passive N95 facemasks is not adequate as their filteration sizes are 0.3 Micron and viruses are 0.11 Microns

As per links below most cloth type face mask don't stop virus. Industrial HEPA filters based respirators are probably better.

I wonder whether Chinese are as usual hiding something.
1. They have gone into complete lock down of their cities which is unprecedented
2. The president himself admitted there is emergency
3. They are building hospitals for 1000+ beds.

So far, based on what has been reported is that it is only 2-3% fatality rate which is very less. No one under age of 10 has died and mostly affected people with underlying illness.
Also, WHO has not declared it as a worldwide emergency. So, that's a relief

The virus is in the same family as SARS and closest to one found in bats, not snakes.
Image
>>>
Researchers say the virus spreading through China is in the same family as SARS and closest to one found in bats.

Discovery: Today, researchers led by Zheng-Li Shi at the Wuhan Institute for Virology posted a paper describing the virus in detail for the first time, including a picture of the virus infecting cells.

The new virus, dubbed nCoV-2019, is in the same family as SARS—a coronavirus that caused global mayhem starting in 2003—and even uses the same receptor to hack into a person’s lung cells, Li’s team found.

Outbreak: The current epidemic, which started in mid-December, has already affected more than 500 people, killing several. It may have originated in an animal market in Wuhan, a city of 11 million that Chinese authorities have put under quarantine.

Viruses can make the jump from animals to humans, especially when wild animals are kept and sold in food markets, as is alleged to be the case in Wuhan.

Gene detectives: It didn’t take long for researchers to grab the genetic sequence of the virus and blast it against big gene databases to see what other germs it is most similar to. Already the virus has been collected and decoded from at least 24 victims in Wuhan, Shenzhen, and other cities.

Snake snafu: Another Chinese team this week claimed the virus could have come from snakes, but that widely reported finding already looks like a mistake. The new analysis shows its genetic makeup is 96% identical to that of a coronavirus found in bats. “I would be very surprised if this were a snake virus,” says Timothy Sheahan, a virologist at the University of North Carolina. Bats were also the ultimate source of SARS, scientists believe.

Taxi drivers have the most up-to-date news in the city. Right? Though sometimes they spread rumors
06:56
These drivers told me
06:58
Many of them, as early as mid-December, heard from friends and family about the virus
07:03
Because their friends and families were locals, they knew about the infectious disease
07:07
They suspected it was SARS
07:08
Why couldn't we call it SARS?
07:10
It is SIMILAR to SARS, alright?
07:12
Why should an ordinary citizen distinguish between SARS and the coronavirus?
07:16
Now, the Wuhan police
07:17
doesn't even apologize one bit
07:20
They only said "your rumormongering is not a serious offense"
07:22
"Because you mistook the virus for SARS"
07:25
For example,
07:26
somebody says "there's a Northeastern Tiger in the mountain, don't go there!"
07:30
Then
07:31
A gov official says "there's no tiger!" And then the tiger kills a bunch of people
07:34
After the gov wakes up to it, they say:
07:36
"It's not Northeastern Tiger, it's a Huanan Tiger"
07:38
"You made a mistake. So your rumormongering is only a light offense"
07:41
You mistook the type of the tiger
07:47
Let's go back
07:48
Some taxi drivers knew about it in mid- to late- December
07:52
Among the taxi drivers, they start to
07:54
telling each other not to go to Huanan Market
07:57
Some who used to shop there no longer went there
08:00
I don't know if Hunan Market is the real source of the virus
08:04
But it is really a source of the outbreak
08:06
Understood? I don't know where the virus comes from
08:08
But Huanan Market is where many people got sick
08:11
This is why when I went there, the locals were terrified

Here is a compilation of a few videos that have been circulating. Due to a lack on information regarding the extent of the virus outbreak, individuals in communities are sealing off residents in their homes.

It is unclear whether this was mandated by local governments, or if individuals are acting on their own accord. It is also unclear whether the individuals sealing these people in their homes are intending to provide them with aid and food after sealing them off.

It should be noted that some doors have been sealed in such a way as to not allow the door to open AT ALL. Whereas the homes in Nantong (seen here) can still open their doors to some extent.

Again, a different viewpoint, one which may explain Xi's panic.

https://www.eurotopics.net/en/234000/me ... oronavirus
The virus has put the Chinese president in a tight spot, but it's not one he can't wriggle out of, Népszava believes:

“The coronavirus poses a much greater threat to China's leadership than the demonstrations in Hong Kong or the election results in Taiwan. This time, it can't be denied that the crisis originated and is centred in China. There can be no pinning the blame on obscure, hostile external forces . ... China's President senses this danger. The proof is that he's striking back and personally taking control of the fight against the epidemic. But no doubt he'll fall back on old strategies and find a few people in the middle or even upper echelons of power who can be used as scapegoats.”
Let's judge this developing story by facts and numbers, not necessarily by the panicked actions of Chinese authorities.

The Empire does not send Flunky#1 (PM) to a deadly disease zone unless there is a MAJOR disaster. There is no way to guarantee safety of the PM: what is the impact if he catches the disease? So they see at least the strong potential of a catastrophe. They don't panic easily.

Scary.

As I said before in other threads China is paper tiger as we ooh and awe at their ships and fighter jets most of them are purely for show to appease their population that Communist government is powerful. In reality seeing how easily they folded with trade deal when trump bullied them the government has no backbone...

This Coronavirus drama will drag on for couple months, In mean time China will fudge economy numbers to appear everything looks good and print some billions to fake purchase foreign goods. So US and Europe won’t question it and stock market will soar since all is good except for Chinese who are infected and quarantined and few hundreds/thousands killed. All will be forgotten by end of year, Dow will be at 32k and Trump will boast about how Xi great leadership thwarted a pandemic while he gets him to sign another one sided trade deal for phase 2.

Let us not make comment on China and gloat. This thread is to learn and prepare when the virus reaches us. The Chinese with their massive manufacturing and organizational capability are not able to cope up so far. I am more concerned on our own disjointed response. SARs was dangerous and killed more young people with strong immune response since it made the body's own immune defence attack its own cells. nCov-19 is similar and perhaps engineered to be more effective. What can be done to limit the damage.

THE TRUTH ABOUT “DRAMATIC ACTION”
by Da Shiji (达史纪) | Jan 27, 2020

Good Read......
As far as I know, trying to contain a city of 11 million people is new to science.” This was how Dr. Gauden Galea, the World Health Organization’s country representative in China, described the situation facing the city of Wuhan when asked late last week for his update on the coronavirus outbreak.
I am now one of 11 million people in Wuhan who are living through this grand experiment, a measure that, Galea also said, shows “a very strong public health commitment and a willingness to take dramatic action.” From inside the curtain that now encloses my city, I wish to offer my thoughts on this “dramatic action,” and to judge what we have actually seen and experienced in terms of commitment to public health.

DRAFT Suggestions for Containment. I assume that this will spread across borders quite easily and we need to arrive at SOP that can be implemented by communities.

Cure side
1) Work on Vaccine and get a vaccination program started (is there a disease that provide a protective function)
2) Hope we get a vaccine and target patient profile (who is most susceptible) and start vaccinating these target groups on priorit

Containment Side
1) I hope our scientists and the medical/pharma establishment are scale up testing and production of medical suits, rebreathers etc
2) Containment assuming that we have cases of nCOV-19 in our vicinity what is SOP for isolating them and their potential social touch zone.
3) Will a Hookah type device which bubbles air breathed (in and out) through a solution of salt / hypochlorite work to destroy the virus? If yes then we need to prototype it and distribute the design so that the infected/suspected to be infected people can be issued this so that they can reduce their impact on people around them.
4) I assume that this is an infection that spreads via predominently air and mucosal contamination of skin etc. Others may explain the mode of spread

Incubation period is not 2 weeks. It's 3 days.
Kerala medical authorities might have suggested two week quarantine guideline as extra precaution which is good.

Rohit,
There is not enough data to determine the exact incubation period of this virus. As per WHO, a vague estimate is 2-10 days. Some cases in Wuhan have shown as late as 15 days. Imo, the virus maybe staying dormant for the right time.

This chini virus acts like the chini military. Very scary image but little kill potential. lol

For the confirmed cases outside Cheen (not trusting chicommie sources), 114 infected resulted in no deaths. Fatality rate at 0% so far.

The truth is I fear an economic impact on India if we overreact. Ban travel from Cheen and Far East if need be but don't panic when the inevitable cases sneak through. Until the death rate for the external cases rise we shouldn't panic.

As per links below most cloth type face mask don't stop virus. Industrial HEPA filters based respirators are probably better.

N95 should work because the virus does not float around by itself, but is likely carried on droplets of bodily fluids when an infected person sneezes.

Gloves, Face masks, and something to protect your eyes should be good enough to reduce your chances of getting infected.

Oh my god. Indian scientists have just found HIV (AIDS) virus-like insertions in the 2019-nCov virus that are not found in any other coronavirus. They hint at the possibility that this Chinese virus was designed ["not fortuitous']. Scary if true. https://biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/202 ... 1.full.pdf

There is no death, so far of non-Chinese people? How did more than 100 Chinese die then? I feel this has more to do with negligence, rather serious mortality rate.

Travelers might be more healthy (more young people than old, more middle class than malnourished poor, etc.) than the general population of cheen. The death rate might go up for non-Chinese if it hits a group of people with more elderly. But it doesn't seem like Ebola or SARS which had a high death rate for anyone contracting it.

My fear is that the low death rate is due to two factors:
1) Excellent Chinese response, absolutely no-nonsense. They put the cases in isolation and bring in treatment, clamp all relatives, house, neighborhood in quarantine at gunpoint if needed. Loooong experience in that sort of thing from Red Guards era.
2) Cases outside are generally advanced university students who return, and are relatively well-off and with good middle-class parental support. People who know how to deal with immigration/customs in multiple countries.

What happens when it hits aam janta in urban and then rural desh, ppl? So please don't gloat. Most of rural desh has no medical access worth the name, no insult intended. Just a sobering fact. For economic and other reasons, they don't and cannot afford to go seek medical attention every time someone gets a 'flu' or cough and cold. Even that young woman in Malloostan, must have known she was sick when she flew home - is January a vacation time in cheen?

Took 2-3 more days in Malloostan b4 going to the hospital.

I hope I am totally wrong, but I do not have confidence that I am. 8 hours to get to a hospital, 6 hours waiting to find a doctor... and then what is the treatment? With what medicines?
