Per this article, BLR has still long way to go...I think currently, around 1L doses per day are being administered in BLR but population of BLR is 1.27 Crores...

Private hospitals in Bengaluru gave 70% of doses last week
Gupta said, “The administration has identified 26 lakh people above the age of 45 and 15.4 lakhs have been vaccinated at least one dose till date. Close to 60% have been vaccinated and our target is to reach 75% in the next 30 days. We need 4 lakh additional doses and we will get it from the central government.” BBMP said they have identified 64 lakh in the 18-44 age group and only 9 lakh (or 13%) have been vaccinated.
With a gap of around 2-2.5 months between waves, I guess we will see at least one more mini-wave before sizeable population will be vaccinated with at least 1 dose...and then there is the challenge of 2nd dose. Hopefully, by that time, vaccine stock supplies would have improved considerably.

Article was dated June 8th. Apparently, it is quite easy to tie up with a private hospital and get employees or residents vaccinated. One needs around 100+ recipients to qualify for on-site vaccination. Friend was saying that a bakery chain near his house has got all their employees vaccinated. Strangely, some employers are not taking initiative to get their employees vaccinated...

Any idea whats holding up Ph-3 results & approval of Zydus-D vaccine?

We Are Out Of Vaccine Panic Mode; Pfizer, Moderna Can’t Dictate Terms Any More
We had a vaccine drought in April and May, and there will still be a gap between supply and demand at least till July end. But after that it will be relatively smooth sailing.

Around mid-May, the government announced that it was expecting vaccine supplies to touch 216-220 crore (enough for two doses for every adult in this country) by December, but even if we achieve only three-quarters of that projection, we will be sitting pretty.

We can pick and choose who we buy from, and also focus attention on procuring vaccines for teens and younger children, who may become more vulnerable as adults develop herd immunity. The focus of procurement must be on vaccines for children to protect them during wave three.

As things stand, government has already placed orders for 440 million doses with Serum Institute (250 million) and Bharat Biotech (190 million), and another 300 million doses with Biological E, which adds up to advance orders for 740 million doses — enough to vaccinate 350+ million adults comfortably, even accounting for some wastage.

These orders could go up as the year proceeds, and do not include the doses that may be made available from Sputnik V (156 million), Novavax (200 million), and the Zydus Cadila DNA vaccine (50 million). More may be in the pipeline as we move towards the third quarter of this financial year.

However, here’s the point: it is not reasonable to assume that all adults will indeed want a jab, given the residual amount of vaccine hesitancy among many groups of people, and also in some religious communities.

Government aims to administer 1 Crore vaccine doses daily; CISF to accord Bharat Biotech
“The target is to hit the one crore daily jabs mark in August. The new centralised free vaccination policy will help in this objective," a senior government official said.

Meanwhile, the government has decided to accord Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) security cover to the Hyderabad-based campus of Bharat Biotech, one of the major Covid-19 vaccine manufacturers in the country, official sources said.

They said a decision in this regard was taken after a review meeting of the security experts in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and accordingly the CISF has been informed to prepare accordingly.

That's awesome. Are we going to see >4 million/day this week? I sure hope so.

Looking at differences among states, UP and Bihar have been far behind. Both are below 8% in terms of percentage population with one dose. Both have significantly lower urbanization than other states, but still, the rate of vaccination needs to be accelerated. A concerted campaign to reduce vaccine hesitancy will help in both these states.

Its not so bad. B'lore Urban has a population of approx. 10 million (8.5 million in the 2011 census). 10 million people is 6.2 million adults.
Of these 6.2 million, 3.3 million have got at least 1 dose.
1.2 million had contracted Covid. Assume another 1.2 million were positive, but asymtomatic and not declared. These now have immunity.
If those who got covid were vaccinated in the same proportion as the rest of the population, it would mean 4.4 million have some form of
immunity, either from 1 dose, or having got covid earlier. That's 70% of the adult population (or 2/3rd, assuming some leakage into B'lore Rural).
I think that's herd immunity threshold, which is why cases are now falling rapidly.

4m is within touching distance this week. So far quoting from recollection to just decimal place:
Sun+Mon: 4.9m
Tue: 2.9m
Wed: 3.6m

June first week was a strong start and so far Wk 2 is already near the peak rate of April and should comfortably surpass it by end of month.

So far this week, total doses is 26% higher than doses between Sun-Wed last week and over 50% more than 3rd week of May when improvement was beginning to be noticeable.

Here is one article talking about how vaccine hesitancy among religious minorities is being addressed.

Citing an example of areas with vaccine hesitancy, the official said administration in several districts of Uttar Pradesh such as Sultanpur, Amethi, Aligarh and Moradabad and in Haryana’s Mewat has reported reluctance towards vaccines based on dogmas, religious reasons and rumours.

“In Moradabdad because of locals not turning up for vaccines, we found people from the cities showing up for inoculation. Since the administration is making efforts, vaccine hesitancy is slowly ebbing. It also helps that Islamic countries have said they won’t allow entry without vaccines. Even for performing Haj, pilgrims will need to be vaccinated and should not have been hospitalised six months prior to travel,” the official said.

The official said in some areas such vaccine hesitancy was promoted by the statements of some opposition leaders who raised doubts about the Indian vaccines. “In Amethi and Rae Bareily some people said since the Congress leaders have not taken the vaccines, they too were skeptical of taking the shots,” the official said. The BJP has accused SP leader and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav of promoting vaccine hesitancy by dubbing the Indian vaccines as “BJP vaccines”.

Some very interesting data in this article.

India needs 93 lakh COVID-19 vaccinations per day to achieve herd immunity by Sept: FinMin
The ministry says as per India's demographic distribution, 86.5 crore people or 63.1 per cent of the population is above 18 years of age. Assuming herd immunity at 80 per cent, the target population to be vaccinated is 70 crore, it adds
70 crore fully vaccinations will need 140 crores doses. So far India has administered over 24 crore doses. Based on the cumulative order from Suraj on Twitter, India has ordered cumulatively over 105 crore doses.

Going by what was seen in the US, even a 50% vaccination rate helps reduce Covid transmission significantly. Applying that logic even 60 lac doses per day sustained over a couple of months will help India prevent the next wave/waves.

Recently there has been renewed fearmongering about 'lack of WHO EUL' for Covaxin as yet. Here's some data about it.

The WHO regularly updates the EUL list. It is linked off Emergency use listing (EUL)/Covid-19 Vaccines. Covaxin is due for its screening meeting this month.

Some claims have been made regarding students needing a WHO EUL vaccine to go to university in US. This is not true. The precise CDC guidance is:
Guidelines for students vaccinated outside US
COVID-19 vaccines not authorized by FDA but listed for emergency use by the World Health Organization (WHO)2
- People who have received all recommended doses of a COVID-19 vaccine that is listed for emergency use by WHO do not need any additional doses with an FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine.
- People who have not received all the recommended doses of a COVID-19 vaccine listed for emergency use by WHO may be offered a complete FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine series.
COVID-19 vaccines neither authorized by FDA nor listed for emergency use by WHO
- People who received all or some of the recommended doses of a COVID-19 vaccine that is neither authorized by FDA nor listed for emergency use by WHO may be offered a complete FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine series.
So basically, they won't stop anybody - they may offer that you take another locally approved vaccine at least 28 days later.

Further, since these are guidelines, no one is mandated to follow them exactly. Some universities do, but others (e.g. the University of California system) accept any vaccine approved by a local authority as sufficient basis for coverage, i.e. Indian students going to Berkeley or UCLA don't need to worry if they got Covaxin.

CDC also carefully sidesteps the entire question of verification. Due to the US political resistance to vaccine passports, they have no basis to verify that the proof offered by anyone is valid. What if someone photoshops their document to replace 'BatVaxSino' with 'Sinovac' ?

Tamil Nadu leads India in new infections, denies citizens Ivermectin
Thank God, until an atheist and new Chief Minister, MK Stalin, took power on May 7, 2021, in Tamil Nadu and proclaimed that Remdesivir would replace Ivermectin as their drug of choice. Now Tamil Nadu's cases are diverging from the states that chose Ivermectin.

Goa's cases have dropped 62% in just nine days since announcing the Ivermectin policy - from 3124 down to 1204. The other Indian Ivermectin states have also enjoyed a substantial decrease in new infections. By contrast, Tamil's citizens face an ascending escalator of cases bringing untold misery and mortality to this southern Indian community, which begs the question - When will Tamil Nadu hear the message that Ivermectin saves lives? When will the rest of humanity take heed?

The one thing that may be preventing Covaxin from getting a EUL from WHO is that the final phase 3 results will be out in July. More detail from Dr. Raches Ella here.

Yes, Chinese got around this quickly by doing their Ph 3 trials in MENA (UAE, Egypt, Jordan).

Being able to do a lot of trials quickly is about money. The government has been funding phase 3 trials, and spend Rs.100 cr on Biological E (or was it Zycov-D ?) Phase 3 trial recently.

We still do not have a lot of details of the availability of Sputnik V. Here is one news item about DRL establishing it's supply chain:

Dr Reddy’s to get freezers from Rockwell to store Sputnik V
Dr Reddy’s had earlier tied up with the Russian Direct Investment Fund that markets Sputnik V globally, to distribute first 250 million doses of the vaccine.
The deal has been closed to supply at least 750 Covid-19 vaccine freezers to various hospitals and institutions across the country, 500 of these being specifically for Sputnik V.

Sputnik data so far has not engendered much confidence. They had a '100 million dose' supply agreement with Dr Reddys last autumn, but nothing has happened there. They only got EUA in April. And their 'large delivery' recently was about 1.4 million doses, or enough for about a third of a day.

I expect that for niche foreign vaccines like this, there will be no government order. Instead private entities will be welcome to buy and sell any such vaccines as long as they have local EUA or have done bridging trials as stated in guidelines. Govt will focus on high volume and ideally domestic sources to foster.

The US has been seeing a huge drop in daily vaccination rate, down to just 1 million now. It is at risk of missing its own targets , and in the process is accumulating production it needs to dispose of somehow.

Exactly. The FDA which approves vaccines is in bed with Pfizer. This is a corporate handout of $10 billion to Pfizer and millions doses of J&J vaccine are set to expire this month. Something that has been known as issue since April and the US regime doesn't have time to export it even to neighboring countries.

There we go. Simple case of understanding your customer. Many in domestic help category were avoiding vaccines due to BIF sending out whatsapp messages. Wise people started offering extra money and all domestic helpers got themselves and families vaccinated. I have been pointing out to many that paying that way is lot better than paying mafias and running around for magical drugs and oxygen. Rs1000 and three days off were enough incentives for the most.
