There are many reports about Novavax:

- Two doses of Novavax is shown to be universal-like with superior antibody levels vs 3x mRNA in trial participants. It is broad spectrum so annual boosting is actually achievable. High durability of protein platform similar to Novavax vs mRNA .. LInk:
Experimental Vaccines Offer Long-term Protection Against Severe COVID

- The novavax has a broader immune response and no IgG4 shift has been seen.
https://jci.org/articles/view/160898
- Broad response also indicated here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-022-35768-3
("memory B cells, Fc effector functions, and T cell responses... likely contributed to vaccine efficacy.)"

- Reports from Canada - They are going to invest/promote Novavax.
-https://globalnews.ca/news/9522330/nova ... al-future/

Finally: This study based on real world vaccinations from South Korea compare Novavax with Pfizer. Shows Novavax is twice as good at protecting against severe infection and a 4th homologous dose of Novavax showed broad protection against emerging variants.
https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101 ... 1.full.pdf

In USA There is lot of interest in the prospect of using Novavax as a booster, especially since mRNA vaccines don't seem to be that durable.. compared to Novavx -

India records 796 new Covid cases, active tally crosses 5,000 after 109 days
As a minor uptick has been noted in daily coronavirus cases, the health ministry on Thursday asked the six most-affected states – Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka – to follow a risk assessment-based approach to prevent and contain the spread of infection.

Amber G, it seems like recent uptick in case numbers in India has prompted a meet within PMO...is a new variant circulating within India? Also how does the numbers track with SUTRA model?

^^^ Zynda - Yes the uptick is serious, and I am glad PMO and others are listening to us and taking it seriously. This particular variant, it seems, from what we can gather from data, is quite immune escape (both vaccines and hybrid immunity is less effective) so the uptick is serious...

FWIW: Here are some points from what little we know...

1 - the XBB.1.16 is a recombinant lineage of the virus and is a descendent of the XBB lineage. The earliest sequence of this lineage belongs to a viral genome isolated in New York in January 2023 and the lineage has been seen to be circulating predominantly in India.
A significant number of the genomes from outside India, such as in the U.S. and Singapore, have been linked to international travel, mostly from India. The variant has to date been detected in at least 14 countries across the world.
2- The lineage XBB.1.16 has a number of mutations in common with the VOI XBB.1.5. Additional key mutations including E180V and T478R in the Spike protein and I5T in ORF9b are present in the XBB.1.16 lineage.
In contrast, the XBB.1.5 has the mutation T478K in the Spike area. T478R is associated with immune escape, or the ability of the virus to evade antibodies raised from previous infections or vaccines. The ORF9b I5T mutation is also found in the lineage XBB.1.9 and has been widely believed to lend a growth advantage to the virus.
-- XBB.1.16 has a higher growth advantage over currently circulating SARS-CoV-2 lineages, including the XBB.1.5 lineage.

XBB.1.16 is causing concerns ---- because:

The fast-spreading XBB.1.16 lineage is believed to be responsible for the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in India.
(From data we have) -- XBB.1.16 today accounts for more than 30% of all the sequenced genomes in March 2023, and its proportion has been seen to be increasing in the past few weeks, to become the major lineage in some states.
To date, the lineage has been found in samples from Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Delhi, Puducherry, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Odisha. The states of Telangana, Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra have reported the highest number of XBB.1.16 cases, but with the caveat that this could be biased as not all states proactively sequence samples.
The earliest genomes of XBB.1.16 available from India and deposited in GISAID, were from early February 2023, from Karnataka and Maharashtra.

From what little experts are telling us - infections with the XBB.1.16 lineage do not differ in clinical severity from those caused by other Omicron lineages, although the higher growth advantage also possibly the higher immune escape could lead to a higher risk of reinfection with XBB.1.16 compared to other circulating Omicron lineages.

(Will share SUTRA graphs -- I am seeing phase transition so need a little more time but as said, this uptick is serious )

Time-tested means could blunt the rise in infections. Wear Masks ... keep up with boosters etc.

>>> From Newspaper reports:
- At the review meeting, PM Modi was briefed about a slight rise in new Covid cases and was apprised on the Influenza situation in the country, particularly the higher number of H1N1 and H3N2 infections detected in the last few months.

- PM directed officials to enhance Whole Genome Sequencing of Positive Samples with the designated INSACOG Genome Sequencing Laboratories. This will support tracking of newer variants,...in timely response

- He stressed that wearing of masks is advisable when senior citizens and those with comorbidities visit crowded areas. He also underscored that Covid-19 pandemic is far from over and there is a need to monitor the status across the country on a regular basis.

ICMR report on sudden heart attacks to come in 2 months: Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya
ET Online Last Updated: Mar 29, 2023, 10:12 PM IST

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that the Indian Council of Medical Research's (ICMR) study on the sudden rise in cardiac arrests after the Covid-19 pandemic is expected to come in the next two months.

"After COVID we have seen incidents of sudden deaths due to heart attacks. ICMR has started a study. The data on vaccination and comorbidity is with us. I was told that the report will come in six months, 3 to 4 months have passed, and within the next two months that report should come,"the health minister said News18's Rising India Summit 2023.

The minister also said that a review of data generated from the death cases due to heart attacks is being done by researchers at All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), Delhi.

"The data of comorbidity and vaccination is there. The AIIMS is studying it and the report will tell us the reason," he added.

Earlier, the department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare asked the ICMR “to give evidence-based clarification based on the findings of its planned studies on this”.

"Currently, there is insufficient evidence/data to prove whether the rise of myocardial infarctions and sudden deaths have been due to COVID-19 vaccines, but these cases of sudden deaths due to myocardial infarctions have increased post-COVID,” the panel headed by Rajya Sabha lawmaker Bhubaneswar Kalita said.

This comes as several people have reportedly suffered from heart attacks leading to their sudden death.

Several cardiologists have reiterated that one of the leading symptoms of long-term Covid is the added strain it puts of people's hearts and they have cautioned them against heavy exercise.

According to a new study, people suffering from flu could be at more than six times higher risk of heart attack a week after, than in the year before or after. The findings come to light as the number of flu cases in India has gradually increased over the past few weeks, as driven by the H3N2 virus.

The study, led by researchers from the University Medical Centre Utrecht in The Netherlands, said the results underline the importance of the flu vaccination programme, as well as awareness of heart attack symptoms among doctors treating patients with flu, the Independent reported.

"Our results endorse strategies to prevent influenza infection, including vaccination. They also advocate for a raised awareness among physicians and hospitalised flu patients for symptoms of heart attacks," lead author Dr Annemarijn de Boer, from the University was quoted as saying.

This new variant is fast spreading, but the medical system seems to be not overwhelmed with sick unlike the previous surge. Could this variant be fast spreading but less lethal compared to earlier versions?

This seems very worrisome. Do we know if getting a bivalent vaccine booster will provide more protection from infection for those who are Covid virgins.

FWIW: Yes, obviously it is worrisome but a few comments which may help:

- The bivalent (BA.5) booster protection from Covid hospitalizations and deaths exceeded expectations vs the BQ.1.1 and XBB.1.5 variants.. per latest reports. (For details see recent NEJM article... Durability of Bivalent Boosters against Omicron Subvariants
Image

(But some Waning seen; minimal, short-lived protection vs infections, Also Moderna > Pfizer - so all Moderna, IMO seems better - all other things being equal)

- Next generation—nasal and variant-proof Covid vaccines —and therapies are around the corner (or available) - Novavx etc are quite effective (Especially against more severe forms of long covid, autoimmune type complications etc)
- Being uptodate on vaccines are a good thing.
- (India may start second round/boosting vaccine drive if results are good etc)
- A T-cell directed vaccine against Covid, with non-spike, conserved antigens (e.g. nucleocapsid, ORF1ab), effective in experimental models for preventing disease, has gone into clinical trials.

With respect to India: I think after a lull - from what I know, SUTRA folks (and others) are waking up..
Lull, IMO was due to 95+% hybrid immunity in India.

But virus has a way to surprise us. This particular variant seems to be more transmissive and more immune escape.
(Perhaps hybrid immunity wanes after a some time)
My guess is a t peak ( estimating few parameters) (may be 30 K per day reported cases) but the model is data driven so may be in a week or two phase may become stable and they may publish more accurate graphs)

Hope this helps. In the meanwhile I am avoiding needless travel and wearing masks whenever it is needed.

Covid or another pandemic will be invented. Two largest democracies, India and US are going into elections in 2024.

Here is what will be suggested, variations of it.

1. Lockdown. To impact the economy of India. To flood the economy with dollars in US.
2. Vaccines. To show India in a bad light. For pharma companies to make money in US to fund the elections.
3. Healthcare infrastructure. In India lack of it. In US, to funnel money into dubious "health tech" plays.

^^^ China's data, unlike most other countries, are not reliably reported and hard to get. In the other thread about 6 months ago I posted analysis and trajectory by out Sutra Model - from available fuzzy data.. If we had access to good sero-survey we can probably understand the trajectory more.

Anyway - from what we know about the data - (and some of my personal guesses)
- "Cinese CDC" stopped reporting weekly data in middle of the May -- but many chinese scientists are reporting Uptick and projecting up to 65 million new cases / week now (and will continue in June)
- 35 Million / day data (for last peak) is quite reliable.
- They are reporting (hospitals etc) - say 40% reinfection is from a hospital in Shenzhen— & 60 percent of COVID-19 patients treated in the past two weeks were infected for the first time. which is serious.
- New XBB-driven COVID wave in China with (reported/estimated 40 million infections per week now and ~65 million infections/week later.
- Seeing/following some tweets from Chinese scientists - they are desperate to it develop a vaccine with better protection against the XBB variant. They say - there are currently two vaccines against XBB that have been preliminarily approved, and three or four more will be approved soon.

We - (people outside china) have to be very watchful.

It is endemic.

Viruses not rarely cause myocarditis. Often missed in smaller hospitals. The true incidence is underestimated.

Perhaps another way to assess it is that the vaccines in fact decreased the incidence of myocarditis. I do not have the numbers.

Amber G ji,
I've been fortunate to have escaped this virus so far. I've been triple vaccinated, 2 doses of Pfizer and 1 of Moderna. Idem for my spouse, never got the virus. (I do not know how much residual immunity I still have, but I'm not going to test it !) My teenage kids got 2 doses, 1 Pfizer and 1 Moderna. Both tested positive more than once, but each time with relatively mild symptoms - they were not asymptomatic. The latest was a month ago, my daughter got it and recovered fairly quickly and didn't pass it onto any in the family.

Given all this, IMO from my personal experience, as of today, it seems the virus has weakened naturally to the point it is no longer a significant threat now. There will be always some cases where it can have very strong, potentially fatal effect, but so does the flu !

However, I have multiple cases where senior men (60+) who were vaccinated and then caught covid and recovered quite quickly, in the months that followed had their co-morbidities like diabetes, heart conditions, kidney, lung conditions etc worsen unexpectedly and eventually succumbed to these complications. I lost my father in dec 2021 this way, his brother passed away similarly few months later, idem for some sr citizen neighbours, there are quite a few other examples in my extended circles.

Even hospitals here in France no longer mandate mask use, but you are encouraged to wear one if you have any symptoms even if it feels like common cold (which is a good thing to do irrespective of covid). Most doctors also don't wear masks all the time anymore, except if they are incertain specialties, surgery etc.

Given you have been following this virus saga very regularly, what should we really worry about?

Hospitals in the area, and some other places have started (or thinking of starting) Mask mandate again. Some countries are implementing serious testing..
Several places are putting back mask mandates. More as a social pressure and out of fear and panic and more like CYA, I think, rather than actual need driven by data. The next line proves it:
Some people I know, who were very careful and remained covid free all these years & had all the vaccinations,& still wear masks in public places -- have come down with the virus..(Recently in a big meeting with Facebook CEO, where all the attendees were required to take a test before the meeting, wore masks during the meeting.. still some came down with the virus) ..
Several people I know followed social distancing and complete quarantine and still got the virus. So they were surprised. Initially there was lot of panic till they recovered without going to the health facility (hospital). They were all 55+ age group (55 - 82).

Is it possible that if you get a milder variant of Coronavirus, you get a dose of "natural vaccination"? And again is it possible that when one gets say cold or flu, they develop a natural immunity to Covid? There seems to be a correlation here: https://www.scientificamerican.com/arti ... ith-covid/

This was the Zuck talk which ended up jeapordizing his return to office pep-talk. Several Facebook employees are upset that they ended up going to office and got Covid. :rotfl: So now it is back to work from home and lot of facebook employees being under-employed and perennially on bench are now under magnifying glass for productivity, something they never were accounted for in the past. The joke on the street is that the COVID virus is smart to infect the facebook employees even after they changed their name to meta.

Cyrano'ji, My cousin passed away due to cancer during covid time. If only there were no lockdowns and if people who were not COVID positive but had other health issues were given priority, my cousin could have lived few more years.

If there was spike in non-Covid deaths during Covid lockdown, it must be blamed on all the people who called for lockdown after the initial lockdown. I can understand the initial lockdown in 2020s. But after that, the lockdowns were unnecessary.

Coming to the virus, it is going to be like the flu virus. That is, there will be seasons where the flu virus takes a heavy toll among the elderly and babies and several seasons where it will be milder, in such seasons, if you take an OTC "medicine" it will resolve in 1 short week otherwise it will take 7 long days.

The traditional flu vaccine using the eggs, may succeed or fail, but it will be less suspicious compared to the new fangled mRNA vaccine. Same outcome for the Wuhan Corona virus.

So if you are worried about Covid, you should worry about Lockdowns and Mask Mandates and compulsory vaccines. All of this will be brought out during the election cycle. World is going to witness two major elections in 2024. This will determine the fate of the humanity for the next 50-80 years. So all knifes and swords will be out.

Disha ji,
The mask issue has been largely blown out of proportion IMO. In many East Asian countries, people have been routinely wearing masks when they have a cold or flu since decades. Its out of simple courtesy to avoid exposing other people to something you are carrying that you know is contagious. My freedom to not wear a mask doesn't mean I can expose others around me to an(y) infectious virus that has caused a lot of fear and panic. The govts need not enforce such mask mandates if people were a bit sensible and wore them voluntarily. I havent heard of anyone dying solely because of wearing a mask.

Similarly this anti-vaxxer sentiment is also hard to understand. There have been a lot of claims about premature deaths etc etc. But most are anecdotal and do not amount to any conclusive evidence that vaccines are the primary cause and the risks of not being vaccinated - at a population level and not at an individual level - outweigh the risk of serious illness and death.

Have most govts across the world been inept, inefficient, corrupt and failed to communicate what they are doing and why while dealing with covid? Absolutely yes. But I'd give them some latitude here because they were dealing with an evolving situation with incomplete information and govts are typically ill equipped and not designed to deal with such situations. From lockdowns to covid stimulus packages, most govts have not really done a good job and they dealt the issue as a loss of control risk than as a public health risk. India is a rare exception.

Would China coming clean from start and sharing what they have been going through and what they are doing with the RoW helped? Would China voluntarily stopping people from going out and coming in very early helped? Again absolutely yes. I would blame them ie CCP responsible and would want the world to hold them accountable for their behaviour AFTER the lab leak than the lab leak itself since a lot of how it happened is still shrouded in secrecy.

Have western pharma companies reacted fast and produced vaccines (particularly MRNA type) that IMO have by and large worked? Yes. Did they get time to trial them out like other vaccines in the past? No. So to some extent I can even understand their demand for indemnity again future claims, specially when the decision to vaccinate is "imposed" by the govts and not a choice made by people individually.

Having said that, have the pharma co.s. tried to rip off the govt, the people world over and made obscene profits? Yes, and I find that reprehensible. EU ordered nearly 10x doses than its eligible population and about 70% were wasted while small countries the world over were clamouring for a few doses. I find that especially shameful and disgusting.

All that being what it is, it seems many people have conflated china, geopolitics, big pharma mistrust, anti capitalist rhetoric, freedom at all costs bluster with simple common sense and made this an ideological and a bigoted issue where there is no reason to. Again Indian people have been an exception to this muddled thinking.

Perhaps it all boils down to people's trust in their govts (or the lack of it) and vice-versa.

JMT etc...

^^ Cyranoji ... Very well articulated

What was a simple and commonsense approach was politicized and used as a weapon to demonize people

Thanks saar.

I must add one more point. The media have really hit the bottom with the covid saga. At a time when they are increasingly under pressure from social media, the MSM should have stood tall as beacons of truth and build trust. Instead, nearly all outlets displayed the worst types of sensationalism, peddled political narratives and fed on fear and burning corpses. Specialist medical journals also dropped the ball and lost a lot of credibility.

As for SM, sensible dialogue has been hard to find, most influencers displayed more flatulence than facts.

We here at BR had some great people helping us keep sanity in tact. So dhanyawad to all those mahodayas !

I found the perverse pleasure of western media in showing India in poor light with outright lies particularly disgusting and symptomatic of the general decline they're feeling subconsciously but are loatge to recognize overtly.
