Question to experts: Once the Jeans Label or whatever of a particular strain are identified, isn't there some standard way to neutralize it, perhaps by "active cancellation" of some kind? (giving analogy from noise reduction headphones) Introduce a virus which basically hootchie-koochies the original and produces the next generation of Rahuls, incapable of doing anything? End of tribe.
If these boogers are natural, then that approach should work. If they are engineered, of course, it gets a lot more complex.
Present strategy appears to be to inject baboons (tailed variety) with a diluted/dead version of the virus, so that the Baboon develops antibodies, then take the Baboon's blood and inject it into people. Not fast enough.

Its called antisense mRNA, can be used to silence genes, also mRNA transcripts. Perhaps not reliably effective. Also need to deliver to individual cells in human body. Delivery systems need improvement. Such therapies are being intensively investiagted.

That was just a thought exercise. Once there is a suitable viral vector, one can stick on tetanus toxin, botulinum toxin, tetrodotoxin genes, or something to produce explosive diarrhea if the designer has a juvenile sense of humour. Or ziika, nipah virus sequences.

Leaving aside the bio-terror angle and designer viruses targeting specific population groups, etc., a case can be made for Indians being relatively immune to Corona viruses. During the previous serious outbreaks of the other Corona virus infections in India's immediate neighborhood - SARS in the circa 2003 and MERS (2012-2017) - had minimal affect on Indians. Although COVID-19 is more contagious or infectious, its mortality is about 2.3% compared to fatality rates of 9.56% for SARS and an astounding 34.5% for MERS. Very few Indians were infected and the mortality was near zero. Prior exposure to Corona viruses or herd immunity was thought to explain the low infection and death rates.

And lastly:
Are Indians immune to SARS virus?
Hopefully, COVID-19 plays out similarly.

skji, APji:

Hot off (ArrTee.com):
COPPER KILLS CORONAVIRUS!

Dang! And I had just given my penny collection to the baink..

Hospital administrators should take a new look at copper, new research suggests, with evidence emerging that the metal can halt the spread of a wide array of diseases.
Long before Pasteur invented the germ theory of disease, copper, and alloys such as brass, were touted as protectors against ill health. While many such pre-scientific remedies have failed rigorous testing, copper has been demonstrated to be a powerful antibiotic.
Dr Sarah Warnes of the University of Southampton {Bilayat ka kaallege aur gori researcher hain, research 400% halal!} has taken this a step further, revealing in mBio that copper can prevent the transmission of lethal respiratory viruses.
Despite the pervasive myth that antibiotics fight viral diseases like flu, effectiveness against bacteria normally provides no indication of anti-viral properties. However, Warnes reports that copper kills coronaviruses, a category that includes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).
These diseases are often resistant to human-to-human transmission, but can be very long-lived when shed by animal hosts, allowing them to be picked up by humans touching surfaces on which they have survived. “Pathogenic human coronavirus 229E remained infectious in a human lung cell culture model following at least five days of persistence on a range of common nonbiocidal surface materials, including polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon; PTFE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ceramic tiles, glass, silicone rubber, and stainless steel,” the paper reports.

However, when Warnes and her co-authors used copper alloy surfaces, they found the viruses were quickly inactivated so they were no longer effective. Even a low concentration of copper proved “very effective,” in the authors' words, when mixed with zinc to make brass.

“Exposure to copper destroyed the viral genomes and irreversibly affected virus morphology, including disintegration of envelope and dispersal of surface spikes,” the paper reports...

The authors recommend using copper alloy surfaces in places where diseases are likely to spread, such as the communal areas of hospital respiratory disease wards.

In 2009 H1N1, against WHO recommendation, China:
- Placed all Mexican nationals in China under quarantine.
- Cancelled direct flights to Mexico.
- Stopped issuing visas to Mexicans.
- Closed consulates in Mexico.
China never admitted this was wrong, or apologized.

- Spokesperson#RAHAE @ @MFA_China - Feb 1
In the same phone call, FM Wang noted certain country has turned a
blind eye to WHO recommendations and imposed sweeping travel
restrictions against China. This kind of overreaction could only make
things even worse. It's not the right way to deal with the pandemic.

I thought that copper thingy was pretty well known. Usha pana chikitsa (drinking lots of water early in the morning) recommends storing the water in a copper pot overnight. Sages had those copper kamandals, which were germicidal. The other elements lower down in that column of the periodic table are actually more effective germicides than copper - those elements are - silver and gold. Colloidal silver is a well-known germicide, it's available in stores. This is also, AFAIK, the silver "bhasma" of ayurveda. Gold bhasma is even more effective.

There's a reason why door knobs, handles, and knockers are made of brass. It doesn't matter how many people put their paws on them, they are known to neutralize germs. And throwing copper coins (pennies in the USA) into fountains might have practical benefits as well.

Also with usha pana chikitsa, copper is a vital nutrient, but hard to get from food alone. So ayurveda thought of a way to get it from water instead. Copper is essential for brain function, and the copper-manganese balance seems to be critical, but foodstuffs seem to be more loaded in manganese than copper. Or rather, from what I can tell, foodstuffs which are rich in copper, seem to be even richer in manganese! Manganese is a component of an extremely powerful anti-oxidant (dismutase?) but too much manganese becomes toxic very rapidly. Some auto-immune and age-related brain or nervous disorders may actually be due to copper imbalances.

Maintaining these competing mineral balances seems to be a tricky art - potassium vs. sodium; copper vs. manganese; calcium vs. magnesium. These seem to compete for the same receptors in the stomach or gut, usually with one mineral outdoing the other, so the other mineral ends up being deficient.

Not an expert in any of the above, this is all from my reading, hope I didn't get things too horribly wrong.

There are many sellers of copper vessels claiming many things. First I have seen of the anti-viral properties. See for example:
10 benefits of drinking water from a copper vessel
Pavitra Sampath – Health.India.com
25-06-2014

According to Ayurveda water stored in a copper vessel has the ability to balance all the three doshas in your body, (vata, kapha and pitta) and it does so by positively charging the water. The water stored in a copper vessel is known as ‘tamara jal’ and is supposed to be consumed after storing the water in a copper vessel for at least eight hours.

... copper gently leeches into the water and lends it all its positive properties {Really? So over time the vessel disappears?}. The best part about this water is that it never becomes stale and can be stored this way for long periods of time. {I don't believe that..}

Here are the health benefits:

Can kill bacteria: Copper is known to be oligodynamic in nature (the sterilizing effect of metals on bacteria),... especially effective against E.coli and S.aureus – ...help prevent common water borne diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery and jaundice,
So, if you fear that your water may be contaminated, store it in a copper vessel before your drink it and rest assured you will be drinking healthy and clean water.

Stimulates your brain: {not enough to see that this article is BS apparently} Our brain works by transmitting impulses (or orders) from one neuron to another through an area known as the synapses. These neurons are covered by a sheath called the myelin sheath that acts like a sort of conductive agent – helping the flow of impulses. How does copper figure here you ask? Well, copper actually helps in the synthesis of phospholipids that are essential for the formation of these myelin sheaths. Thereby, making your brain work much faster and more efficiently. Apart from that copper is known to have brain stimulant and anti convulsive properties (prevents seizures), that do a world of good for your brain.

Regulates the working of the thyroid gland: ..Copper is one of the most important trace minerals the thyroid gland needs to function optimally.

Beats arthritis and inflamed joints: Copper has very potent anti-inflammatory properties. This asset is especially great to relieve aches and pains caused due to inflamed joints – .. drinking water infused with copper is a great way to find relief from the aches and pains of these diseases.

Skin health and melanin production: ..copper is the main component in the production of melanin

Slows down ageing: If you are worried about the appearance of fine lines copper is your natural remedy. Packed with very strong anti-oxidant and cell forming properties,
Helps the digestive system perform better: One of the most common problems encountered these days is indigestion. Acidity, gas or simply the inability to digest certain foods are common and here is where copper comes to your rescue. Copper has properties that stimulates peristalsis .. Apart from that copper also helps cleanse and detox your stomach, regulates the working of your liver and kidneys, aids in the proper elimination of waste and ensures the absorption of nutrients from food.
According to Ayurveda, if you want to help detox your stomach, drink a large glass of water that has been stored in a copper vessel, early in the morning on an empty stomach.
Aids in weight loss:... copper also helps your body break down fat and eliminate it more efficiently. Thereby helping your body keep only what it will use and throw out the rest.
Beats anaemia: The most amazing fact about copper is that it is required in most processes that occur in our body. Right from cell formation to aiding in the absorption of iron, copper is an essential mineral for the functioning of your body. This is one of the reasons that it also helps in keeping anaemia at bay. An essential component in the entire process of absorbing and using iron present in the body, copper helps keep the levels of haeme (iron) up and regulates its flow in your blood vessels.
Helps heal wounds faster: Known for its immense anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties, no wonder copper is a great way to heal wounds quickly. Apart from that, copper is also known to strengthen your immune system and aid in the production on new cells. ..also know to help wounds within the body, especially the stomach. All this put together makes copper a very effective healing agent.
Helps maintain cardiovascular health and beats hypertension: According to the American Cancer Society, copper has been found to help regulate blood pressure, heart rate and lowers one’s cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It also helps to prevent the accumulation of plaque and has the documented effect of dilating blood vessels to allow for the better flow of blood to the heart. It also helps lower one’s triglyceride levels and So, if heart disease is your bane, try drinking copper infused water for great results.
Can fight off cancer: .. copper has very strong antioxidant properties that helps fight off free radicals and negate their ill effects – one of the main reasons for the development of cancer. According to the American Cancer Society the exact mechanism of how copper helps prevent the onset of cancer is still not known but some studies have shown that copper complexes have a considerable anti cancer effect.

How to buy a copper vessel:

If all its benefits have convinced you to try storing and drinking water from a copper vessel, here is a guide to buying the right kind of vessel.

It is important to buy vessels that are made of pure copper. Do not buy ones that have other metals mixed in it. Some of the commonest vessels made with copper are copper water jugs or a kalash. If buying a jug or kalash is too expensive for you, you can invest in a copper glass.
Once you have bought it, rinse it out with water and pour water into the vessel and cover it. You can use a steel or glass dish for this.
One very easy way to distinguish between pure copper and an adulterated version is to know that copper is a very soft metal and pure copper is difficult to mould into intricate shapes. So if the design of your copper vessel is very intricate, it is most probably not made with pure copper.
Washing instructions:
Do not use a coarse scrub to wash the inside of the vessel as it will tend to scrape away copper from the vessel.
Instead, use one half of a lemon (you can squeeze out the juice) and rub it on the inside of the vessel. Allow it to stand for a few minutes and then wash off with plain water. Alternatively you could also try using baking soda with water. Use this mixture to coat the inside of the vessel and allow it to stand for a few minutes and then rinse away the excess baking soda.
Warning:
Copper is not innately utilized by our body. That is why too much of the metal can be detrimental. According to the FDA about 12mg/day is more than sufficient for the body to use without causing any harm. So, do not overdo the entire exercise. Drinking water twice or thrice in a day from a copper vessel is more than enough to reap its benefits.

Copper also happens to be "malleable and ductile" per my 8th Std textbook which may account for its use in making things.I thought the benefit was due to its conducing electricity Rich folks buy silver spoons and stick them into mouths of infants per lore.

We still do it at home. In fact it has caught on with the millennial crowd as well in recent years. You can buy trendy copper water bottles on Amazon and other online shopping outlets and at any department store. I think HUL Pureit (brand of water purifiers) also has an RO purifier that uses a copper tank or infuses copper into the water for purification.

New and most horrible Clarity of Thought (CT):
I am told that the COVID-2019 and its earlier weaker coujins, make it a point to attack the lungs, though other organ damage has been reported for the new one. PLUS, I am told that the attack on the lungs is 100x aggravated, for ppl with certain brands of jeans. IOW, racial aspects. If this was perceived as a weppun, remember old cheen proverb: "B4 setting our fol levenge, did 2 glaves" Levenge is certain. And I wonder.....

Could one conceivably develop a virus that prefers to attack some other specific organ? I assume that the COVID is attracted to lungs not by the bass voice, but by oxygen. COULD a different virus develop a taste for, say, ammonia? and be tuned to attack only certain cells...?

Extending that thought... IOW... in 5 years it may become evident that the # of ppl of One Community/Race, vijiting Fertility Clinics, has shot up. In 10 years, remember, by UBCN All-Go- Rythm, 12.5% of a given human population dies off. If not replaced, then in 80-100 years, whole race kaput. Not a shot fired. Only survivors are over 50% race-mixed. Rapidly decaying to 0%. Race entirely extinct.

That's not a Black Swan (BS).That's a Black Locust Cloud (BLC).

Iran's deputy health minister: I have coronavirus
Iran’s deputy health minister said he has contracted the coronavirus and placed himself in isolation, a day after appearing feverish at a press conference in which he downplayed its spread in the shrine city of Qom and said mass quarantines were unnecessary.

Iraj Harirchi posted a video on social media on Tuesday acknowledging he had caught the virus, which appears to be taking rapid hold in parts of Iran.

Virus cell interaction is through receptors. These are proteins in cell membranes that carry out normal cellular business. Viruses can latch onto specific proteins and may literally inject their genetic material into the cell.

There are differences in the expression of cell surface proteins. Eg the HLA proteins on a racial basis. The differences are not clean. There is overlap in the frequency distribution. Developing race weapons is thankfully not trivial. But not theoretically impossible if one uses a spectrum of markers.

Humanity has sufficient self inflicted wounds to dress than to develop new improved ways to kill each other.

^^ Same as missiles. Apparently as of Y2K there were only about 4 "Level 4" labs in the world. Since they all read "Swarm" by Michael Crichton, now there are apparently 16 or 20. I have a feeling that **BOTH** Iran and Cheen received the "Lota with chewing gum on bottom" at about the same time, Iranians concealed longer than cheen until it became possible to blame cheen for the Iranian cases.
Interesting times..

Yes, over time, the vessel will disappear. I have one copper vessel, and I calculated that it would take 300 years to totally disappear, if I stored water in it every day and drank out of it. Then I measured its weight, and found that it was actually depleting much faster than that. The fact is, you have to scrub and scour out the vessel every few days, else it will blacken and your water will go toxic. The scrubbing happens with tamarind, or with pitambari powder (same as for tarnished silver vessels), and of course it depletes the weight of the vessel. Copper, silver, and gold are in the same column in the periodic table, very similar properties as a result, they're all great conductors of heat and electricity (same number of free electrons), and the germicidal properties are also common to all three (increasing from copper to gold).

"Water never becomes stale" is definitely rubbish. You can't store water in the vessel for more than 8 to 16 hours - if you try to drink water stored too long in it, you will get a weird taste, I don't think that's healthy anymore. Like I said, periodic scrubbing is needed to clean out the corrosion. Copper compounds are no joke, there is one sulphate which is known to be toxic (but which has a beautiful blue color, characteristic of some copper compounds). Don't have to worry about that one though, unless you're storing sulphuric acid in the pot. But the hydroxides are toxic enough in larger quantities.

A little of the copper is very healthy, think of the kamandals of the Rishis of yore (or even today). Too much is a very bad idea.

The other items in that article are fairly accurate. Copper is definitely a component of melanin. And it is needed for joint health. Arthritis creams contain copper for that reason.

About those copper water bottles - I wouldn't recommend them at all. They will corrode very fast, and then you'll be drinking toxic water. Unless there is a way to reach into the bottle and thoroughly scrub it with tamarind (tartaric acid) or pitambari every few days or so. I wouldn't recommend any other cleaner either.

If 50 dead in Iran is to be believed then are we looking at 5000 patients or infected in Iran?

Interesting times..
Note that disease has not made its appearance in Israel.

SanjayKumar and UB, Do we know the list of all BSxL labs in India?

My concern is what if political malcontents are developing own versions of bio agents and spread them into other regions of India? Their own guerilla warfare.

I would first list all such labs in states and further on.

We need to track capability and then worry about intent.

Eg this report says 160 Virus Research labs to be set up.

India to set up 160 virus testing labs

The department of health research of the ministry of health and family welfare is setting up a national network of Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratories

New Delhi: In the backdrop of increasing threat from epidemics like Zika, the government is setting up 160 virus testing laboratories across the country. These laboratories will also be equipped to handle cases of bio-terrorism.

The department of health research of the ministry of health and family welfare is setting up a three-tier national network of Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDLs). The network is being set up under the department’s ongoing research scheme called the Establishment of Network of Laboratories for Managing Epidemics and Natural Calamities.

“The department is committed to set up a total of 160 VRDLs all across the country. These VRDLs are being equipped to handle 30-35 viruses of public health importance. These laboratories will also handle possible cases of bio-terrorism," said minister of state for health and family welfare Shripad Yesso Naik.

With mobility of people across the world increasing, the possibility of spread of viral diseases has increased proportionally.

A recent study by scientists at the University of Oxford and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, Seattle, showed that India is at high risk of a Zika epidemic.

Naik said the National Institute of Virology, Pune has received financial assistance from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta as per the Global Health Security agenda, for enhancing bio risk mitigation awareness in public health community.
The fund also helps in creating laboratory networks for enhanced diagnostic capabilities to deal with surveillance and outbreaks of high risk group viral pathogens causing viral haemorrhagic fevers and respiratory infections.

India Completes first BSL4 lab

Officials from the Indian Council of Medical Research last week announced completion of the nation’s first Bio-Safety Level 4 (BSL 4) high containment laboratory.

The new biodefense lab is located on the main campus of the Microbial Containment Complex at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune. The complex had already been operating laboratories at a BSL 3+ Level for hazardous pathogens.

“This facility is an expansion of current work going in NIV, Pune and would be tremendously useful in investigation outbreak of highly infectious diseases like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Avian and pandemic Swine Influenza, Nipah virus, Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever virus and Kyasanur forest disease virus which created fear and affected at large our country,” states the Ministry of Health and Welfare. “It will also deal with other highly infectious pathogens emerging in the country in future.”

As most of the viral agents listed as tools of bioterrorism are of BSL-4 category, officials state the new laboratory will give the nation increased capability to deal with agents of bioterrorism.

“We wanted to make reagents and our requests to BSL-4 laboratories outside the country were not entertained,” stated N.K. Ganguly, former director of the Indian Council of Medical Research and reported early champion of the project. “That’s when we decided to set up our own facility and partnered with the Department of Science and Technology for the effort.”

The National Institute of Virology is a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Arbovirus and Haemorrhagic Fever Reference and Research, National Influenza Center in India, and Influenza A H5 Reference Laboratory for South East Asia.

The total expenditure for project is reported as Rs. 65 crores (approximately $11.9 million USD).

Note to self. The report is dated March 2013 and talks about Nipah virus which was detected in 2017 in Kerala.

How odd!!!

The first Nips virus outbreak was in the northeast not Kerala.

The virus has been known to have caused outbreaks in SE Asia etc. It’s just due diligence and prudence. Nothing out is the ordinary.
