Congrats to DRDO scientists! Wonder how many tests they will eventually go in for. Hoping to get more details soon on this test, probably K Subramanyam from Hindu I would guess.

Joey, read through Arun_S's Agni pages on BR to get an idea of the capability of Agni III :)

Arun, all news reports including one put out by MoD says diameter is 1.8m. Will that change your range estimates?

A BIG CONGRATS TO DRDO -nothing so far have equalled this stupendous achievement .

Please stop worrying about range -it has enough range to do anything we want her do do any where in the world

You have to put some figures so MOD put 3000 KM and you also have to put some payload so they put 1500 kg to keep evryone happy -thats it

But like indian standard time -both are flexible depending on you too early for the appointment or too late

ABM test is next on the cards in a matter of days and PSLV in configuration -wow this year is hot too hot maybe for some

123 goes down the drain for sure -buit who cares

Here you go joey..

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Agn ... 896472.cms

RANGE: 4,000 kilometres (2,480 miles), according to defence ministry officials, and capable of striking targets deep inside China.

WARHEAD: Agni-III supports a wide range of warheads, conventional and nuclear, with a payload ranging from 600 to 1,800 kilograms (1,320 to 3,960 pounds) including decoys and other anti-ballistic counter-measures.

The statement from the ministry of defence does not mention diameter.

http://pib.nic.in/release/release.asp?relid=26817

The 16 meter long missile weighing 48 tonnes, lifted off successfully from its Rail Mobile Launcher System leaving a trail of orange and yellow smoke. The missile which has a range of more than 3000 kms is capable of carrying a pay load of 1.5 Tonnes.

NDTV Correspondent
Thursday, April 12, 2007 (Balasore)
India took a major step forward in its quest to acquire a credible nuclear deterrent against potential adversaries like China when it successfully test fired the Agni-III intermediate range ballistic missile from the Wheeler Island off the Orissa coast.

The Ministry of Defence has now officially confirmed that all parameters of the 15-minute flight of the missile have been successfully validated.

So will NDTV dedicate as much air time as they did to the failure last year.. or is the Roy-Karat Dynasty too busy weeping for mother China?

Words cannot express how glad and grateful we are for the DRDO team. This is yet another milestone in improving Indian Security from misadventures of chini. Bravo :D :D . This is equal in significance to PokhranII.

But what was the final range: 3k or 4k ?
I shall offer prasadam right away for the great feat.

Same report on Indiadaily but mentions something about a newer, longer ranged missile and ABM. Are they talking aboit the Dhanush or sagarika sub surface system?

http://www.indiadaily.com/editorial/10896.asp

The ability to reach all corners of a potential challenger requires a missile range of between 4,000 and 8,000 km and according to the experts, the country is reportedly developing a longer range missile with a heavier payload, but in a compact configuration with a thicker and shorter length.

They said its development is driven by the need for a more assured retaliation that can defeat emerging anti-ballistic missile (ABM) defences and counter-measures.

Such capability requires a compact missile that can also carry ABM counter-measures along with a warhead, in a configuration similar to MIRV, albeit with state-of-the-art decoys.

According to DRDO sources, the Agni-III features two solid fuelled stages with overall diameter of 1.8 metres. This diameter is compatible with the recently tested sub-surface launch system.

The China daily menrtioned a range of 35oo for the missile. Here is a map of the extreme reached of the missile from India:

Note that the missile covers all of the countries of our concern.

Please forgive my ignorance...!!

I think this would be right time and place to ask one question!

Obviously to test the range of IRBM scientists need to do full fledged test by launching missile to its full range.

But if its ICBM with the range of 10K or more how scientists will manage to do full fledged test to check the range?? If something goes wrong then it is highly likely it will hit civilians in different country.

Let me know where I am wrong..probably Arun_S would help me..

Looks like it was a depressed trajectory launch (max altitude reached is reported as 90 kms).

This is just the beginning, will be completely satisfied only when we have these in numbers running around in remote areas on road mobile IA launchers.

Agni III test fired successfully

Taking a major leap in missile technology, India today successfully test-fired its most powerful nuclear capable intermediate range ballistic missile Agni-III from the Interim Test Range (ITR) here.

The indigenously developed two stage, all solid fuel, 16 meter long missile weighing 48 tonnes blasted off at 10.52 am from a fixed platform with the help of an auto launcher in the launch complex-4 of the ITR, located about 72 km from here, defence officials said.

The surface to surface missile with a strike range of over 3,000 km and capacity to carry a payload of 1.5 tonnes has the capability to reach even remote Chinese mainland cities of Shanghai and Beijing.

India thus joins a select group of nations to field missiles of inter-continental reach.

"The entire flight path of 15 minutes duration validated all mission objectives," a defence ministry spokesman said.

In the successful Agni III test, the spokesman said Indian scientists had for the first time also validated frontline technology of flex nozzle control system for rocket guidance, specially developed composite propellants and guidance and control with fault tolerant avionics.

The sleek missile vertically roared into the clear sky leaving behind a thick column of white and yellow smoke, eyewitness accounts said.

Fitted with an on-board computer, the missile went upto a distance of 90 km vertically crossing the atmosphere and re-entered into the earth targetting the pre-determined impact point near Car Nicobar island, officials said.

The missile was tracked from ground stations at Dhamra, ITR Balasore, Port Blair and Naval warships in the Indian Ocean.

With the successful test-fire, Agni-III is the missile with the longest reach in South Asia and more powerful than any missile in Pakistan's arsenal. However, China has missiles with a longer reach.

After three postponements, Agni III was first test fired on July 9, 2006, but the missile failed to meet its mission objectives due to cascaded failure of booster flex nozzle controller.

Initially, Indian scientists had planned only three tests, before its induction in 2008. However, DRDO sources said with the failure of maiden test flight, more tests would now be required to prove its robustness.

Though DRDO officials are tightlipped, well informed sources said that Agni III costs about 1/6th of similar missiles developed by western countries.

Amongst the range of Agni missiles, Agni III is the country's first solid fuel missile that is compact and small enough for easy mobility and can be easily packaged for deployment on variety of surface and sub-surface platforms.

The Missile, DRDO scentists say will support a wide range of warhead configurations with total playload mass ranging from 600 kg to 1,800 kg.

Due to its high accuracy, the missile is useable in smaller sub-nuclear conflicts, a trend now seen in American long-range missiles.

Agni III, DRDO sources said is likely to serve as a base missile for development of underwater launched version of the Agni missiles, miniaturised to be carried in future Indian submarines.

Going thru the previous posts, there are reports suggesting 600 to 1800 kg payload capacity. Also, there is a mention of decoys. This seems to suggest MIRV capability with 3 TN warheads and some decoys.

inshallah by reducing its payload to a mere 500kg (enough for 1 Tnuke + 1 decoy) a micro-A3 with a shortened 1st stage would be possible perhaps with a 7500km range than 12000km

easier for placement in submarines and permits a smashmouth response
anywhere in asia , europe and oceania from submerged platform in IOR.

ofcourse if they can accomodate the full spec A3 all the better, I aint complainin about it

They should have a test of any one of the Agnis and the trishul/prithvi ABMDs.
The ABMs series should be tasked to defend a particular target designated by the Agni.
The Agni has to defeat the ABMs and hit the target, while the ABMs will have to hit the RV before it detonates.
Test of both..

The "Agni" should now be renamed as the "Xtasy"! Great, great achievement. Now the ungodly can shiver and shake in their lairs and gnash their teeth at our "big boy".If the Xtasy can be fitted into the hull and launched from the ATV,it would give us a quantum jump in our strategic defence. The rail mobile version is very welcome too and absolutely neccessary as part of the triad.

panda's IRBM transfers to rat have reached the range limit coz any more and hackles are going to be raised against rat from points west of the bosporus.
so panda went ahead and kitted them up with a GLCM.

I figure more advanced GLCMs could be supplied if panda has them ready.

also look for supersonic YJ-8x moskit licensed models/clones PLANAF has
been working on to suddenly appear in PAF inventory once they get the J-10.
the Mirage-III 'haiders' are too old and weak to carry them and F-solah wont
be permitted by unkil.

if they have some leverage on the Yuan SSK eqpt suppliers (propulsion) expect Yuan SSK sales at friendship prices to rat.

now that A3 is back on track to IOC in 4-5 yrs after a few tests, we need to quit backslapping ourselves and invest heavily into
- space based imint and comm assets for robust command chain & targeting
- GLCM subsonic and stealthy from road TELs (1500km for a start)
- hypersonic brahmos of 1000km
- JSTAR and space-SAR tech to find tactical targets for GLCMs
- SLBM & SSBN
- NEACP and looking_glass

by hook or crook we must be a 'theatre peer' of Unkil in 2020 and have
decisive superiority in IOR over any other combination of rogues like
