Agni-III ballistic missile test fired
...
Three sophisticated radars, six electro-optical tracking systems and three telemetric data stations, located in the mainland were engaged to monitor the entire trajectory of the missile.

With an improved guidance system, this latest variant of the Agni series of missiles, Agni-III had a diameter of 1.8 metres and length of 16 metres.

The missile, which weighed about 48 tonnes, was meant to support a wide range of warhead configurations with a total payload ranging between 600 kg and 1.8 tonne and featured decoys and other anti-ballistic counter measures, the sources said.

[ur=http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2007/04/ ... 4959.htmll]India Test Fires Nuclear-Capable Missile[/url]
Associated Press

By MUNEEZA NAQVI 04.12.07, 2:05 AM ET

India test fired a new missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads across much of Asia and the Middle East, a state government official said Thursday.

An earlier test firing of the Agni III missile had failed when it plunged into the Bay of Bengal short of its target in July last year. There was no immediate comment whether the current test was successful.

The missile was launched from Wheeler Island off the eastern state of Orissa, the state government official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

India's current crop of missiles has been largely intended to confront neighboring archrival Pakistan. The Agni III, in contrast, is India's longest-range missile, designed to reach 1,900 miles - putting China's major cities well into range, as well as targets deep in the Middle East.

It also is said to be capable of carrying up to a 300-kiloton nuclear warhead.

India's missile program, together with its nuclear program and drive for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, is part of its ongoing efforts to establish itself as a world power.

India's homegrown missile arsenal already includes the short-range Prithvi ballistic missile, the medium-range Akash, the anti-tank Nag and the supersonic Brahmos missile, developed jointly with Russia.

Look at the propaganda part. They are highlighting the Middle east along with China and attributing this statement to an official.

Anyway congrats to all those involved in this test.
India successfully test-fires Agni-III missile
BALASORE: India on Thursday test-fired its nuclear capable intermediate range ballistic missile Agni-III from the Interim Test Range (ITR) at the Wheeler's Island in the Bay of Bengal off the Orissa coast.

The indigenously developed surface-to-surface missile, blasted off at 10.52 am (IST) from a fixed platform with the help of an auto launcher in the launch complex-4 of the ITR, located about 72 km from here, defence sources said.

The sleek missile vertically roared into the clear sky leaving behind a thick column of white and yellow smoke, eyewitness accounts said.

Though the headline says successfull, the details don't mention anything about splashdown. We might have to wait for some more time.

IBN can barely contain the bile....

New Delhi: India has test-fired the Agni-III ballistic missile from Wheeler's Island in the Bay of Bengal on Thursday.

It is too early to say whether the test has been successful as yet. If the test fails, then it will reflect very poorly on India. It will however be a blessing in disguise for India's neighbours.

Agni-III is a two-stage, solid-fueled missile designed to carry a nuclear warhead over a range of 3,000 km.

A successful test will extend the reach of India's strategic weapons beyond its immediate neighbourhood.

The first test-firing in July 2006 failed apparently because of a defective heat shield. So far, India has a proven missile range of up to 2,000 km with the Agni-II.

Inter-continental missile reach is considered the benchmark in establishing nuclear weapons capability and a successful Agni-III, which is designed to carry a 1.5-ton nuclear bomb, can put India within a threshold of this reach.

The Cabinet Committee on Security had cleared the test-firing of the 3,000-km range, nuclear capable missile.

it surely cant have failed within range of ground based telescopes or we'd
know by now. lets hope this puppy ran all the way...
by pre-announcing it , they give leverage to DDM to stick knife in if it fails.
better to test then announce...if DDM spies in balasore pick it up just say its
a trishul launch.

Ofiicial press release from ministry of defence

http://mod.nic.in/

Indian scientists today achieved a major milestone in missile technology when they successfully conducted the flight test of the Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) – AGNI III from the Wheeler Island, off the coast of Orissa at 10.50 this morning. The 16 meter long missile weighing 48 tonnes, lifted off successfully from its Rail Mobile Launcher System leaving a trail of orange and yellow smoke. The missile which has a range of more than 3000 kms is capable of carrying a pay load of 1.5 Tonnes. The trajectory of AGNI III is computed by the onboard computer system based on the launch and target coordinates. During the flight the missile has no communication with the ground systems and is autonomous and fully `intelligent’ to reach its designated target. With this success, the design team is happy that the problems faced in the previous attempt on July 09 last year has been fully understood and solved.

The entire flight path of approx 15 minutes duration validated all mission objectives primarily to establish the performance of the two stage propulsion in flight and the flex nozzle control system being attempted by DRDO scientists for the very first time. The flight was tracked from ground stations at Dhamra, ITR, Balasore, Port Blair and two Indian Naval ships in the Indian Ocean. Shri M Natarajan, Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri made a specific reference to the achievement of high degree of self reliance in AGNI III, as most of the sub systems have been developed within the country with the synergy between DRDO – Industry (both Public and Private sector) and Academia. As per the Mission Director, Shri Avinash Chander, many “firstsâ€

The range is a bit disappointing, 1,8 tonnes and 3k hmm, 4k would have been nice.

Aah this young generation. There was a time we used to do extra page handwriting to get poppins. There used to be a number game in the wrappers. You do that......seniors are impressed.....and you get more 8) .

Anyway kudos to our "Brains". I am just getting unconfirmed reports that a Bakistani was frightened to by roar overhead when he was preparing morning ham for his German wife in South of Indian Ocean. The yatch not destroyed but the window glass was shattered.

Bear saab, I am as fob as they come onlee ! I know what poppins 'poppins' is, having visited a manu. plant for the same as a kid and ofcourse being a fan of the same onlee as a kid. I also remember that twas so popular that other competitors also provided cheap duplicate stuff, which was nothing close to the original Parle Poppins.

The reason why I asked was that I thought that as many other words on BRF, it was double meaning onlee. Was unable to relate 'poppins' to the Milforum.

Did Rakesh also sign a poppins contract apart from the mithai contract with BRFees ?

Pleej to note from PIB report above that the fat lady is good to go onlee. But an earlier PTI report claimed a fixed launch platform though.
The 16 meter long missile weighing 48 tonnes, lifted off successfully from its Rail Mobile Launcher System leaving a trail of orange and yellow smoke.
Added later: Pardon my exuberance onlee. I recall the very first pictures of Agni-III from DRDO HQ inaugeration were of the missile on rail-mobile-launcher.
