yet another deficiency.... Army wants new thermal imager based panoramic commander's night vision sight for T-90 tanks

This intepretation is completely wrong. Commander cannot complain about his thermal sight simply because T-90 nor Arjun has one available for him, as he will look through the gunner sight.

Israeli army says Trophy tank defense system operational

JERUSALEM, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli army has declared that following a series of successful tests, its Trophy tank defense system is now operational, local daily The Jerusalem Post reported on Thursday.

The system, developed by Rafael, a government firm specializing in weaponry and military technology development, can create a hemispherical protected zone around the armored vehicle, detecting and tracking a hostile missile and then launching a projectile to intercept the threat, according to the report.

A series of tests were carried out last week in an army base in southern Israel, and the results surpassed expectations regarding the system's capability, said the report. Defense officials said it succeeded in intercepting all of the coming anti-tank missiles.

Following the Second Lebanon War in 2006, during which Israeli tanks came under heavy anti-tank missile fire from Hezbollah militants, the Israeli army sped up development of the Trophy tank defense system.

According to the newspaper, the protector has already been installed on a number of tanks, and by the end of the year will be automatically pre-installed on new tanks coming off the production lines.

I was watching Tank Overhaul series on HD TV and found that the Centurion Tank weighed in at 52 tonnes. The Arjun weighs in at 58.5 tonnes which is in same class as the older tank. So did IA get rid of their heavy lorries/trucks that they complain about its weight? Or they got used to light weight tin cans from Russia?

The US is shipping 17 Strykers, its most modern fighting vehicles which lead many ground operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, to India for the largest joint army exercise between the two countries. This will be the largest deployment of Strykers by the US outside Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Strykers will be shipped from Hawaii, the headquarters of the US Pacific Command, to Mumbai and then taken either by air or road to Babina near Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. Babina is the headquarters of the Indian Armys 31 armoured division. The division is an element of the 21 Strike Corps and trained to lead ground operations in desert and semi-desert terrain on the India-Pakistan border. The 31 division has T-72 Russian-origin tanks and is currently being re-equipped with the later-generation T-90 tanks.

Looks like all the bhishma's in pic are meant for thar desert/rajasthan. desert camouflage. that pic is nice. so neatly arranged.

Please don't raise such questions!
This is VERY VERY MINOR THING, due harsh heat conditions in Rajasthan, HIGH-LEVEL ARMY persons may have tested the t-90 tanks in Air-conditioned Hangers. Please don't question t-90 capability. The HIGH-LEVEL will get the thar-desert air-conditioned if the new t-90 thermal imager won't work.

It's really stupid to raise questions about performance of imported equipment!

No, these were indeed indigenously built. 310 CKD/SKD was the first lot ordered 2001 followed by 347 CKD/SKD ordered 2008.

A local manufacture agreement for 1000 additional tanks was also signed. IA ordered 330 tanks as a part of local manufacture. These 10 tanks are a part of the 330 order.

So total # of tanks = 310+347+1000=1657. Assuming they manufacture 100 pa, this force will be realized by 2019/2020.

The 310+347+(330/1000) numbers were cross-checked at four levels at four different times -

1. When Defence Acquisition Council chaired by Defence Minister cleared it.
2. When Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister cleared it.
3. When actual orders were placed.
4. When the tanks were inducted.

This is the first reference i see to the 400 figure, and i didnt find any DAC or CCS clearance for its purchase.

It was during the September 2008 meeting that russian non compliance in not transferring technology was resolved and the 1000 manufacture started. The 330 was ordered 2006-7 but manufacture could start only post September 2008

I believe the 400 number is a mis-representation of the 347 order 11 months ago.

example of the Indian defence establishment’s sheer inability to take timely decisions in tune with strategic concerns.

my prediction: we are preparing to fight wars in the desert always testing upto 55C.

the chinese will sneak around and knife us @ 2C.

armour brigades need to be pulled from their burrows in the desert
and carried up lock stock and barrel to ladakh, sikkim and even
arunachal if feasible.

Do we have plans for any wheeled APC class of vehicles ala the BRDM series...
I think they do make a lot of sense esp in Urban combat compared to tracked vehicles...
Isnt it time that a GQSR was made for a Tracked/Wheeled APC and Arjun Mk2...
