Frustrated middle aged males with too much time on hands. :)
Haridasji, unfortunately poor arm chair soldiers, keyboard ninjas that we are, we cannot do anything more.
The questions come from our quest to more then what is known as open source info or about progress of the programs which are not shared in the open forums, till the programs reach a certain level of maturity.
The opinions and directives are basically just our jingo dreams of what we would like to see or happen.
The above comments/opinion/directive also stem from the bitter experience that we have all had, where we are forced to go for imported systems, even when Indian solutions gaining traction.

For the Astra I have a distinct feeling that we will have to pony up scant resources to purchase Derby-ER, even though Astra MK-II is in development and we can live with the Derby, Astra combo for few months or a couple of years.

We have all seen this game played many a times before. The only difference now is that, as our programs start to progress, we are offered more and more cutting edge stuff by the foreign vendors.

^^HD sir, how do foreign vendors get to know where we are in the R&D stage? isn't that supposed to be classified info?

They get to know through our testing schedule much of which is in public domain especially wrt missiles. It is actually that sime

During the investigation, 57 R&AW officers, including some from the top ranks, were found to be regularly sharing information with Rabinder Singh. A post-mortem in the case revealed that about two dozen officers had actively colluded with him in leaking the intelligence to Langley. No action was taken against the officers and they were quietly transferred to insignificant stations, to live with the burden of sharing top secret notes with the traitor, who sold them to the CIA.

^^^ how come they got off with a mere transfer enjoying full tenure ? A circus if so

They were perhaps not aware that the info was being shared with Langley. The lapse was more of not adhering to standard operational procedure and not giving info to even a senior within RAW, if the same was not authorised to receive that on a regular basis.
Perhaps they too were conned by the traitor into parting with useful info.

We are way too lenient. These guys must either be clandestinely picked up or bumped off - to convey a message to the rest. Putin's Polonium approach!

I do want to say this. Do any of us know what truely transpired? Who leaked what and under what circumstances and consequences.

If not, we should stop passing these judgements. Rest, I leave it to you guys.

Karan, In addition to R&D prowress, this no. of tests also indicate the increasing manufacturing capability on part of DRDO-BDL combine(can also be BEL in certain cases). For Agni series over 5 were tested. Which can only mean many more were produced. This is pretty good intensity. I doubt if more than 2-3 countries test so much.

It would also means direction from GoI to speed up induction and funding for the testing. Also indicates maturing of technologies

The type of missiles: Long & Short range BM. ATGM, AAM, MBRL, SAM. So the entire range of missiles are been pushed through.

Hope the pace continues in 2019. Hope to see HSTDV and more testing of QRSAM & SFDR. Ofcourse Akash-NG kicking off as well.

We have crossed the learning curve. The core now is: GoI Funding.

Just had a quick look at 17-18 Parl Report. DRDO had asked for 22k(3.7 billion) crores and has got 14.8k crores(2.5 billion). Apparently it is 20% increase compared to last year.

Out of these only 9k is for actual R&D. 5k reserved for Strat program.

We cannot even provide 1.2 billion more!

SLBM K-5 is the fastest missile in its class
Can deliver nuclear warhead of more than one tonne 5,000 km away
To be flight tested from a submersible pontoon launcher off Visakhapatnam coast

They are going from sanction to first test of such sophisticated missiles in 4 years!

Composites are coming. The only technological challenge left is NEPE based propellants.

Gyan, no Air Force will use a BVR as a WVR, it is not about the capability of the missile, but its cost.

Most pilots don’t get to fire a BVR in their entire career.

India should develop its own WVR.

we need to retest new gen light TN weapons 150-400KT in a new smiling buddha2 series.

with a 500kg warhead, automatically the range and mirv options get better with extra changes on missile.

we are just carrying the burden of a incomplete series of tests and trying to be too dharmic when everyone is playing fast and loose

I can't be sure of this, but maybe the need to shorten the range of a missile as on original range the missile might overshoot certain set of targets.

At shorter range. You achieve the reentry speed of real long range shots. So testing under compressed range conditions and also mimicking long range targets for BMD.

Once you have tested the accuracy at full range, you don’t need to re incur the logistical hassles and expense of redoing it at full range. You are speaking of sending multiple specialized ships to 5500 km range. That’s a week of sailing, one way and weather permitting.

SIngha ji, The consequence of defacto capping ( due to IUCN Deal) is clear and uncomfortable due to its impact on capping Indian potential.

The saving grace is the Indian high yield deterrence weapon is unquestionable to all potential challengers. IMHO it comes from two varieties, one that is relatively heavier compared to the other.

LIF is mine or rented does not change the weaponized warheads, as long as our weaponeer have access to it. Think of some hi tech euro consortium weapons matches unkill corporate weapons.

It tested the MaxQ pressure.
Missiles test programs requires test to verify the envelop corners: MaxQ Pressure (lofted) & Temp (depressed).

The cost of imported IR guided missile is around Rs 10 crores each now. The cost of indigenous Astra?

I am all for developing indigenous WVR using Nag & Astra as technology building blocks. But Astra 1 will have a role in WVR arena also.

We can do more subcritical testing and improve computer simulation. LIF is too expensive and there are conflicting stories in the public domain about its success. The idea of the last smiling Budha is to get enough information for further computer simulation. I always thought the large payload tonnage has to do with future MIRV/MARV requirements.
