63 tonnes could be with the canister for that would be the weight seen by the trailer.

Loud explosions off Bengal coast trigger panic among tourists
There were speculations whether missiles test fired from Chandipur in Odisha accidentally landed near the Bengal coast.

Not too far from Chandipur!

The explosion sites are said to be well out in the sea, and not within visible range from the coast.

Some said there was a mild quake after the explosion

Did we conducted a secret nuclear test, with a secret uncle's nod ofcourse ?? :) :)

Sir, it looks both range and payload seems under reported by at least 50 percent on Agni V.

Agree, would include the gas generator to eject the missile not required for non-cannisterised version or possibly MIRVs

Any guess on what manner of missile test is this?

Any chance of a map plot please?

Curious to know if this test is close to Digha.

To the right top of the image, from the end of the written Balasore.
Digha is a beach, with very black rocky-grainy sand, which is a favourite hang out for people from kolkata, orissa, jharkhand,

Digha marked with a red marker. Balasore, lies west of it. Further west of balasore are the Interim Test Range launch sites

The report i read mentioned sound was due to sonic boom since they were practcingsome scenarios where sonic boom happened closer to land. (Usually the planes do the supersonic flights once far from population but here scenario was different)

Tryingto locate link where i read it

Alright, it seems that IAF Su-30 MKIs may have gone supersonic while releasing Astra AAMs and rather close to shore.

What you see is a regular small arms firing range with concrete screens to protect bullets from going astray. You see a similar structure in the Army cantonment in Ahmedabad close to the airport. See the coordinates 23.080799, 72.609491

An interesting snippet from Jaitley's visit. Astra serial production has started.
He also inaugurated the production of the Astra weapon system, an indigenously developed air-to-air Beyond Visual Range missile developed by DRDO, with a range of 110 km at Bhanur

Nice tool to visualize missile range and area of destruction.

http://nuclearsecrecy.com/missilemap/#

Select a missile preset (for example, Agni 3) and select an area of impact (for example, GHQ, Rawalpindi) and zoom in to the target.

This is great news. When BDL sets up a production line, its for mass production. Trial batches for testing are made at DRDO Labs.

http://www.thehansindia.com/posts/index ... avy/322178

At BDL, Bhanur Unit, Shri Arun Jaitley, inaugurated the ASTRA Manufacturing Facility. Astra weapon system is an indigenously developed Air-to-Air Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile developed by DRDO. It comprises of Astra Launcher and Astra Missile. It is designed as a BVR missile with a range of 110 Km in head-on mode and 20 Km in tail-chase mode. BVR missiles are the latest in air to air combat. BDL has been designated as the Lead Integrator by DRDO.

Indigenous assembly of LR-SAM has commenced too

The Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LRSAM) was handed over to the Indian Navy by Union Minister for Defence and Finance Arun Jaitley at Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) in Kanchanbagh here on Sunday.

LRSAM is an advanced combat suit for missile defense against air targets, missiles and full capabilities of air and surface surveillance, threat alert, fire control. LRSAM is a DRDO-IAI (Defence Research & Development Organization - Israeli Aircraft Industries) Joint Development Contract with defined work-share. BDL is the Missile Production Agency to deliver and support the Indian Armed Forces in country's Defence preparedness. The missile is same for Tri Services viz., Navy, Air Force and Army.

BDL has acquired 632 acres of land from State Government to establish manufacturing, testing and storage facilities for advanced Weapon Systems of MRSAM (Medium Range Surface- to- Air Missiles) and QRSAM (Quick Reaction Surface- to- Air Missiles).

Plan is afoot to create exclusive complex for manufacture, assemble the missiles and integrate the weapon system in a world class environment. The need of the hour is to create all these facilities at this new complex which will herald a new era with Make in India as core concept and absorbing and establishing required facilities by active collaboration with DRDO and foreign OEMs. BDL envisions the Ibrahimpatnam Complex as its future Weapon Realisation and Delivery Unit. BDL spent 522 Crores on this facility.

http://www.livemint.com/Companies/XIR1V ... oduct.html

The missile-system manufacturer has already invested about Rs500 crore for various missile systems as well as ramping up the anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) from 6,000 units to 10,000 units, said V. Udaya Bhaskar, chairman and managing director of BDL.

Relevance of this is that ATGMs are becoming primary tank killers and bunker busters instead of MBT cannons limited by LOS constraints.

Speaking about the Akash MKII, Bhaskar said the new version will not only differ in range, but also have smart systems with seekers which will have no ground-control interference. The defence ministry has given a mandate to complete this project in three years.

According to Bhaskar, Bharat Dynamics has an order book of Rs16,000 crore. It has three functional units that will manufacture a Very Short Range Air Defence Missile (VSHORAD) at the defence firm’s plant in Amravati (Maharashtra) and an exclusive surface-to-air missile plant in Ibrahimpatanam (Telengana). Bharat Dynamics is also looking at collaborating with private players for defence manufacturing.

About the “Varunastra”, Bhaskar said the underwater missile system is being tested and almost in the induction phase. He said that once commercial orders come in from the defence forces, Bharat Dynamics would need to create an exclusive unit for underwater weapons manufacturing and testing at Visakhapatnam in the next 2-3 years.

Check all the bigwigs in the photo

Symbolic representation of DRDO handing over missile to BDL.

As I have been mentioning all along, when something meets requirements and passes testing, there is no reason why MoD will not mass produce it and IAF will not induct it.

The Astra will immediately replace R-77 on Su-30MKI followed by MiG-29K, MiG-29UPG and thereafter R-27.

This is a great day for Indian missile manufacturing. Our very own AAM.

Thanks tsarkar for the insight.

Recent test at digha by IAF at supersonic speed means user trials is very satisfying for IAF.

Next and sone pe suhaga step would be test firing from Tejas.

tsarkar,

I am a little unsure about the space occupied by the LRSAM - all due to my understanding, so I appreciate your clarifications in advance. (You may have to bear with my ignorance too).

So the LRSAMi is the same as Astra AAM? If so, I understand how it takes over the R-73. How does it fit the Navy? It is not a Barak-8 or other onboard replacement, is it meant to support shore facilities? Isn't that Akash + Rajendra?

I guess the various "marketing positioning" for these missiles, is what I'm unclear on.

Any Idea if this commericial production has begun with the Russian KU Band seeker or the Ingenious seeker which was tested in March 2017, I am guessing it is with the Russian Seeker as the Indian seeker has not been tested in all regimes yet.

Dear Diwakar,

LRSAM is a missile developed jointly with IAI. Its a 70 km ranged SAM. Its called MRSAM in Army & Air Force service because 70 km is long range at sea while its medium range terrestrially.

Astra is a completely different Air to Air missile designed completely indigenously.

Both these missiles are entering production - one at BDL Ibrahimpatnam and other at BDL Bhanur

Astra will replace R-77 missile that will shortly reach end of their technical lives.
