They are going to end up producing way more aircraft of this type than they anticipate.
So I hope they anticipate it now ahead of time and plan accordingly.
This has been the case for every low & mid cost plane that has been purchased and it will be so for the Tejas as well.

Plan for extended production NOW - especially from the point of component acquisition.

I may be wrong on this, but
1. To get more n of mirage rafale
2. This will be taken as much as is produced

May be they know that it is going to come anyhow..let's not ask for more. If I were in there situation, I would do the same. Which AF chief would not want 100+ rafale on top of 270+ Su 30 , 324 Tejas, ~80 mirage and Mig 29 each??? May be USAF/US Navy.

I like very visible signs of committment. 324 LCA is Mk2 inclusive. If Mk1 is going gang busters then why not increase this order itself to something more substantial when you know you have a numbers problem. Right now mk2 is still pulao.

^^this is my understanding, IR, ramamna and JayZ guru can correct me,
1. even if no.s are increased today, by the time they come, MK2 will going in for production. Saving themselves the hassle of upgrades later on. If the Mk2 gets delayed, they can obviously keep on absorbing Mk2s
2. In case a pliable govt comes, they can go for emergency purchase of additional rafales in addition to what can be produced and absorbed
That said, does IAF/Mod have any plans for 45+ sqdn fighter jet force. Wont we need to increase our fighter pilot pool and increase training to maintain same levels as of today?

Just for perspective the total French air raft since the first Ourugan is ~550 aircraft since 1954.

Good news! That HAL was thinking of this was apparent from a program on the LCA, where HAL Test Pilot Gp Cpt Muthanna had mentioned that there was plenty of potential to use the LCA as a LIFT. But since then there was no news on movement on this front. Stripped of high end fighter avionics will mean that the LCA SPORT will be a lighter trainer than the LCA Mk1 combat capable trainer..and that will mean superior performance and cheaper price. Synthetic training will be the key, simulating a radar and displaying targets in the air and on the ground.

Had drafted this, but post SKAT7 didn't post it at that time. Om shanti.

Training evolution -
- PC mkII -> Kiran -> Hawks
- PC mkII -> Hawks
- (PC mkII / HTT40) -> * -> Hawks -> (Advanced hawk / hawk-i / SPORT)

https://www.livefistdefence.com/2019/02 ... ainer.html
quite simply, an ‘LCA Lite’ — an aircraft that sports the LCA Mk.1 twin-seat trainer airframe, but stripped of high end sensors and avionics, and given a training specific panoramic cockpit.
...
will be utilized for fighter training after Advanced Jet Training stage and before induction of pilots into a frontline fighter squadron
...
Just why HAL and BAE Systems would unveil two similarly souped up versions of the Hawk trainer around the same time was perplexing, and still unclear (Link about advanced hawk = https://www.livefistdefence.com/2017/02 ... -hawk.html
)
...
have been signs that the Air Force isn’t particularly inclined to tinker any more with its training regimen if it doesn’t involve a low cost intermediate trainer between the basic and advanced stages

The rationale of proposing SPORT when there already is a plane by the HAL/BAe is still puzzling. Gurus, clear this nanha abdul's doubt.

I think IAF has rejected Advanced version of Hawk. Thus HAL unveiling LCA SPORT hoping to convince IAF need of additional layer of training with faster jets before graduating to full fledged fighter platforms.

Looks like ADA has prepared for a big bang this time.

Supersonic tanks and Brahmos NG look a bit oxymoron there. :D Nice pointy EFT vs bulbous Baby Brahmos.

The BVRs are probably Derby. Not sure if they are Derby-ER though...

Per this link, Derby-ER is already selected to equip Tejas as its primary BVR weapon.

https://www.airforce-technology.com/pro ... r-missile/
Derby’s variants include I-Derby and I-Derby ER (Extended Range). The upgraded I-Derby AAR missile is equipped with a software-defined active radar seeker and was unveiled at the Aero India 2015 exhibition held in Bengaluru, India.

The I-Derby ER advanced active radar missile was unveiled at the Paris Air Show 2015. It features a solid-state active radar seeker and a dual pulse rocket motor, which provides an operational range of up to 100km.

The missile can be launched from Sea Harrier jet fighter, F-16 (Block 52) Fighting Falcon, F-5E Tiger II, and IAI Kfir combat aircraft. It was exhibited during the Seoul International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition (ADEX) held Seoul, South Korea, in October 2015.

The I-Derby ER has been selected by India to equip the LCA Tejas light combat supersonic fighter. Integration tests are underway and a test-fire is set for March 2016.

My guess is that we will wait till Mk.1A+Uttam to come online until Astra Mk.1 or higher variants are integrated on to Tejas.

Very nice. I like a lot :)

Gurus (JayS, Indranil, etc) can the HAL SPORT platform be used instead of the BAe Hawk in the Surya Kiran team? The reason I am asking is Wing Cdr Sahil Gandhi (the pilot who lost his life in the Surya Kiran crash) said this about the Hawk....

Aero India Crash: Pilot Leaves Behind a Loving Young Family
https://www.thequint.com/news/india/aer ... s.2KUhori6

“The aircraft is electronically intrinsic in nature. This not only makes maintaining it a challenge, but also more susceptible to failure."

From an optics perspective, the Tejas is a great platform for the Surya Kiran team. Desi plane, Tejas means radiance and Surya means sun. The two are meant for each other.

Rakesh, the Tejas cannot afford any major incident in public view, given the vested interests that will capitalize on it. Until the aircraft is in service in the hundreds and literally too big to fail and irreplaceable without breaking the bank, we should not give it to the Surya Kirans as neither the Indian public nor the establishment has the maturity to deal with any Tejas incident.

The Indian Air Force’s strongest endorsement yet of the LCA Tejas: the proof of the pudding is in how the LCA performer recently at Vayu Shakti, with a high sortie generation rate and the required weapons capabilities, says IAF chief Dhanoa after receiving FOC documents.

Ministry of Defence
Final Operational Clearance of LCA Tejas MK I for Indian Air Force
Posted On: 20 FEB 2019 7:44PM by PIB Delhi

20thFebruary 2019 is a significant day in the journey of Light Combat Aircraft Tejas MK I for Indian Air Force (IAF), when the formal declaration of Final Operational Clearance (FOC) of the aircraft was made by Secretary Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Dr G Satheesh Reddy. The day also witnessed the handing over of FOC Certificate and Release to Service Document (RSD) to the Chief of Air Staff in the presence of Defence Secretary and CMD, HAL.

FOC involves addition of key capabilities to the Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) aircraft which in main are Beyond Visual Range Missile capabilities. Air-to-Air Refuelling, Air-to-Ground FOC earmarked weapons and general flight envelope expansion.

The RSD provides the capabilities, features and technologies that FOC standard Aircraft will have on Induction into IAF. The FOC standard Aircraft drawings have already been handed over to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to start production after incorporating key changes over the IOC standard Aircraft.

Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) of the aircraft took place in the year 2013 and IOC standard Aircraft were inducted into IAF No. 45 Squadron, in July 2016. The IAF Squadron has since flown over 1500 sorties successfully on the Aircraft.It is a proud day for all the agencies involved in the design, development and production of the aircraft i.e., Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), the autonomous society of DRDO as the design agency and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) as the manufacturer. Many other DRDO laboratories like ADE, GTRE, LRDE, CEMILAC etc., as well as other agencies such as BEL, CSIR, DG-AQA, and Private sector agencies have contributed in the journey of LCA.
