Janes - report:

Pakistan's industry joins international competition for new NATO-standard rifle
Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) has supplied the Pakistan Army with trials PK-8 assault rifles as the Ministry of Defence (MoD) considers changing from 7.62 mm weapons to a 5.56 mm system. But POF is facing competition from international companies including FN Herstal, which has already supplied certain units within the Pakistan armed forces with 5.56 mm weapons.

Govt. of India should ensure to buy at least 1:1 fighters to match JF-17s. Recent news is Pakis will build 200-250 of them.

I am firmly believe IAF will go for Rafaels with full ToT. IAF should ask the GOI to double the amount to 20 billion $ so that it can buy 200+ fighters of two candidates (100 each) to counter the new threat raisen by Pakistan.

France to enhance cooperation in different sectors: French Envoy

Friday, 23 March 2007
ISLAMABAD, Mar 23 (APP): French ambassador to Pakistan Regis de Belenet has said that efforts should be made to find solutions to the root-causes of the conflicts through peaceful means and poverty alleviation instead of using only force to fight war against terror.

He was talking to newsmen here on last night at a dinner reception hosted by him at his residence in honour of delegation of former auditors from the Institute of National Defence High Studies who are here for a study tour to Pakistan.

...He said France has enhanced its cooperation and assistance to Pakistan in different sectors, especially in the fields of defence and tourism.

He said best example of Pak-French cooperation was in the field of Agosta submarine where France has been cooperating with Pakistan despite the loss of 11 French engineers in an unfortunate incident of May 2003.

The ambassador said first Agosta submarine was built in France, second was assembled in Pakistan and being prepared in Pakistan through transfer of technology from France to Pakistan.

He said there was more cooperation to acquire more submarines for Pakistan Navy and aircraft for Pakistan Air Force from France.

He said France has also submitted its bid for the new submarine for Pakistan Navy.
Acquiring arms for self defense right of every nations: Musharraf
KAMRA: President Pervez Musharraf has said that acquiring weapons for self defence and protection is the right of every nation and the armed forces would be equipped with latest version of weaponry and airpower for meeting any external challenges.

He was speaking at the welcome ceremony of JF-17 Thunder Fighter aircraft at Pakistan Aeronautical Complex Kamra on Wednesday.

...He said that the Air Force should also have its own mid air refueling potential.

...Two JF-17 Thunder Fighter aircraft which have arrived in Pakistan would be flying on the occasion of Pakistan Day Parade on the 23rd of March.

Six more such fighter planes would arrived in the country by the end of the year.

Khurshid terms meetings with Chinese leaders very productive
Wednesday
, 21 March 2007
BEIJING, March 21 (APP) - Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri has said that his meetings with Premier Wen Jiabao and Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing were very productive and successful, as both the sides agreed on the need of strengthening economic underpinning to their existing very strong political and defense relationship.

In an interview with APP at the end of his official visit to Beijing he said, his tour was a success, reflecting the feelings of the close brotherhood and friendship between Pakistan and China.

Kasuri said that he was touched by the fact that the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao during his meeting on Tuesday has particularly recalled memorable visit to Pakistan and felt the sort of affection he had received.

During his meeting with Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, he thanked for the singular honour being the first foreign leader provided oppurtunity to visit the China's highly safeguarded space facilities.

Kasuri said that Premier Wen Jiabao during his meeting remarked not many leaders in China had been allowed to visit that space facility.

The fact that he was allowed to visit the China's top facility in space exploration was an indication of the closeness of the relations between the two countries, he said.

Khurshid Kasuri expressed the hope that during the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, the process for cooperation for peaceful use of space would be carried further.

Detailed article on the JF-17

Post by JaiS »

X-posting from Airforce Monthly forum. KDR is the Kanwa Defence Review, at www.kanwa.com.

[quote]

Air Marshal Khalid Choudhry, Chairman of the Pakistan aeronautical Complex Board (PACB), accepted KDR’s exclusive interview. He disclosed that 8 JF17 fighters are now on the production line in Chengdu, and some of them will be delivered to Pakistan on March 23, 2007, the Independence Day of the country. These two JF17 fighters are expected to give demonstrative flights on the Independence Day, and the remaining JF17 fighters will all be delivered to Pakistan within 2007. In January 2008, Pakistan will start producing JF17 fighter.

Air Marshal Choudhry told KDR that the first batch of JF17 fighters would be fitted with Chinese-made radar systems, and currently two research institutes in Nanjing and Wuxi (KDR note: No.14 Institute and No.607 Institute) are bidding for the radar systems. Pakistan will make a decision upon completing all tests. Meanwhile, since the Pakistani Air Force has chosen the Grifo-7 radar system designed by Italian Galileo Avionica Company for F7PG fighter, Galileo Avionica hopes that eventually it will win the bid for JF17 radar system. “Pakistan is very clever. They will allow two Chinese companies to compete with each other first, and then get the Chinese compete with Western companies. If Pakistan requests, Galileo Avionica will provide Pakistan with the radar system for testing on JF17,â€

JF-17 Flying Display on Pakistan Day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhrNIdbzkwo
I watched the display. Probably wrong to judge the aircraft from this rather tame display. A couple of turns and wing overs - roll rate for the wing over looking pretty slow. No loop, no high AOA flight.

I did some Gooling for specs.

The JF 17 Thundarrrrr was derived from the MiG 21 (will post Janes news item that I have archived)

The length of the aircraft is about the same as the MiG 21. It's wingspan is greater in keeping with the concept of splitting a MiG 21 along its length in two equal halves and adding a wedge of fuselage to make a new plane.

The Thundarrr can carry about 3.5 tons of munitions - a ton and a half more than the MiG 21. It's range is greater than the MiG 21. Weights 33% more than the MiG 21. No idea about its agility and power in combat. The MiG 21 is loved by pilots for its performance. A bigger MiG 21 with a slightly more powerful engine may not translate to any great improvement in agility. I am no expert in Aerodynamics but the wings look very "conservative" - reminiscent of the Northrop F-5.

The Thundarrrs t/w ratio is said to be >9. That is in keeping with its stated t-o weight and the thrust of the RD 93.

wtf is "longitudinal FBW".??

Imagine what the reaction of any jingo on this forum if he was told that a brand new Indian a/c has "longitudinal FBW"?? I see mockery at higher achievements.

The JF 17 is a MiG 21 with better range and weights. It is not a dedicated heavy strike aircraft and as far as I can tell it is not a dedicate air superiority fighter.

What is it?

I suspect it is a stop-gap aircraft to build up Chinese tech skills. We can expect better things from China in future.

There was news that China would not want many - because China would have J 10s.

Why is China going for these a/c then? Does that say something about the J 10?

Looks like some new UAVs for Pakistan -

url

PakDef forum has people claiming the unidentified customer is definitely Pakistan, & some have already been delivered.

The Falco as it stands is nothing special in most respects, a fairly ordinary surveillance UAV apart from its unsegregated civil airspace certification (now that is unusual!), but the PicoSAR radar looks like a nice bit of kit. Handy for monitoring ground movements. I wonder if Pakistan has ambitions in that direction?

SA "long-range" "underwater" missile for

Post by prao »

Here's a news-item that Pukistan is interested in a SA "underwater" missile with a 2000-2500 "km" range. The specs are obviously wrong but I can't find any SA missile that might even remotely match this. Wikipedia doesn't list any anti-ship or anti-sub missile at all. Any idea what it could be. Just a psyops?

Just shows Puki ia equal if not better than Yindu India. Paki's launch its national satellite without even touching them. It is made and goes to space automatically because of La-Hori Jinn power, and that is because it is privilaged to being Muslim and TFTA.

The Islamist SOP's (Son of a Pig) can't even write specification to order the satellite via Uncle Jiang's Porky Fast Food Restraunt (Aka "Please Wait while we proliferate"). Or steer it from GTO to GSO orbit :). This makes Paki H&D go down the musharraf & toilet.

Pakistan Procurement
Telesat will assist Pakistan's Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) in procuring, building, launching and bringing into service a new communications satellite to replace Paksat-1 at 38 deg. E. Long. The Ottawa-based telecom satellite operator will initiate and evaluate proposals from manufacturers for Paksat-1R, to begin operation in 2010, and oversee production, launch and in-orbit testing of the spacecraft. Pakistan is one of a growing number of nations developing an indigenous satellite capability. Suparco also designed, built and launched a pair of low-Earth-orbit experimental satellites, BADR-1 and BADR-B. Telesat, a 35-year-old satellite consultancy, will merge with Loral Skynet mid-year.
Wonder what does the "R" stand for in the Paksat-1R?
My 3 year old brain thinks "R" stands for Paki-satan being a Rand* (keep) of Amrika bahadur.

While talking about Bakristan , you Kaffirs should always rememeber the rule number 1 i.e R always stand for RETARDS in Indian context and REAR in U.S context.
This satelite will establish Baki claim of number 1 Retard and Rear in current geo-political game.

The 2 Rs in their leaders are symbolic of these 2 qualiteis of Baki society and country.

I don't see any 'denigration', and I don't see a need to be polite against Paki's. The Porki's don't just denigrate other peoples religion ( I can live with that ), but they kill people for not being a member of their Arab cult.

The FC-1 was to be powered by a Russian engine, are the Russians really going to allow China to sell FC-1's with Russian engine to Porkistan ?
And if not what other options does China have ?

Islam and Islamist are two very different things. Please check any dictionary.

As for Muslim and TFTA, that is a privilege only Pakistanis have (by their own claims).

I am guessing since their Paksat-1 (leased from hughes) went kaput, well they cannot use most of the transponders, this must be a replacement for it. I guess they followed the same convention as Insat-4CR, but since paksat-1 was not a total loss they could have named it paksat-2 or was it??

Pak-France naval exercise from March 31

[quote]

KARACHI: The naval forces of Pakistan and France will conduct a three-day joint exercise from March 31, 2007, outside the Karachi Harbour.

Speaking to reporters at East Wharf, Keamari, on Tuesday, Captain Xavier Rebour, commandant of the visiting French F67-class destroyer Tourville, which specialises in anti-submarine warfare, said that the exercise would symbolise friendly relations between the naval forces of the two countries that had been helping each other in the War Against Terrorism over the past few years.

“The French Navy is coming back to Pakistan after 2002. We also came here last year and earlier this month and participated in a multinational naval exercise hosted by the Pakistan Navy in the north Arabian Sea,â€

Sumair: My statement is to Paki caim of superiority because they are muslim and TFTA race (keyword is 'and'). In contrast with Bangladesh (aka East Pakistanis) who were muslim but not TFTA, thus rightfully to be ruled by West Pakistan who are both muslim and TFTA. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan's claim to natural superiority and 1 Paki = 10 Indian is founded on this. If you recall or have it on your archive please see opening statement of Shiv's thread on Islamism. Islamist & pakistan are one and the same thus attacking Islamists is attaking Pakistan.

Indian citizens (Hindus, Muslim, Sikh, Christians, Jain, Bhuddhist ...) are honorable Indian as long as their loyalty is to their motherland and not a foreign power center. I hope that is clear to all Indian citizens and beyond debate.

PAF to seek more Chinese aircraft, says air chief

[quote]

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) aims to acquire 200-250 JF-17 Thunder (FC-1) fighter aircraft in place of the 150 originally envisaged, Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mehmood Ahmed has said in an interview published in the latest issue of the prestigious Jane’s Defence Weekly, an international defence magazine.

The PAF’s first two JF-17s were displayed publicly on 23 March following their arrival earlier in the month. The Pakistani Air chief also spoke about the controversy surrounding reports of the Russia engines intended to power the JF-17. “We haven’t contracted the Russians on this [the engine], so the deal is between Russia and China. We have no issues related to this, although there have been efforts to impede progress by creating some road blocks in this particular path,â€

WHat is the MEA and MOD doing about this, after Russian defence minister publicaly said there will be no export of engines to Pakistan. While we are sleeping Pakis want J10's, F-16's and 200 JF-17's. Wow if that happens were in trouble as the Pakistanis will defenately start a war

Aditya,

Please look at the comparitive timelines by when the Pakistanis will receive '200' JF-17s, and the as yet unordered J-10s, and the timeline for IAF to receive more MKIs, AWACS. I am not sure of how you relate the Pakistani acquisition of these platforms with Pakistanis starting a war.

JF-17 engine row resolved: Air chief

By Mayed Ali

KAMRA: Air Chief Marshal Tanveer Mehmood has said the issue involving the engine of JF-17 Thunder aircraft has been resolved amicably and there is no immediate threat vis-a-vis availability of the Russian RD-93 engines for the aircraft.

While addressing the queries of media at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) in the first ‘Meet the Press’ here Friday, the Air chief seemed confident that the joint venture would never be sabotaged, regarding the controversy attached to the supply of engines.

Admitting India had been trying hard to dash the future prospects of the JF-17 Thunder, Tanveer made it clear that the Chinese authorities had given concrete assurances after having sorted the issue with the Russian counterparts. He maintained China was responsible for the supply of engines for it had entered into an agreement with the Russian firm, manufacturing the RD-93 engines.

Asked if Pakistan and China were looking for alternatives, he said such an initiative could be fruitful for both the producers as the project envisaged large number of combat aircraft production in the years to come. As aircrafts needed new engines twice in its operational service, the production of new engine could help smooth supply, besides making the project more cost-effective.

Asked about his fears vis-a-vis the possibility of negative Russian intervention, Tanveer said: “Yes, it’s a Russian engine. And yes, the notion about the Indian endeavours is partly true. But one must understand that the engine is a contract between the Chinese and the Russian governments. We are not a party to that contract. Subsequently, the re-exporting of these engines to Pakistan is the issue between Pakistan and the Chinese industry. They have ensured us there would be no impediment in this regard. We hope this engine issue will cease to be an issue.â€

Pakistan is also planning to modernize its TOW missiles, fielding radio-frequency TOW 2A to replace current wire-guided TOW (BGM-71) systems. The total order is expected to cost about U.S. $185 million. The order is expected to include 2,769 Radio Frequency (RF) TOW 2A Missiles and 415 RF Bunker Buster Missiles. The order will also include modifications for 121 TOW launchers, introducing the RF guidance system. Some of the missiles are expected to field with Pakistani Army AH-1S Cobra attack helicopters, enabling employment of new tactics, techniques and procedures that have already proven highly effective against terrorists.

from http://www.defense-update.com/newscast/ ... 06.htm#tow

Wireless TOW (ER)

A fifth generation of the TOW family, TOW-ER also known as TOW AERO provides significant operational advantages above the latest TOW-2B version. Among the improvements are improved aerodynamic profile and elimination of guidance wires, enabling target engagements beyond 4.5 km. The aerodynamic improvements maintain higher velocity throughout the flight which enables the missile to cover the longer distance at almost the same time (21 seconds) as it required to fly to its previous max. range of 3.75 km. The wire guidance system is replaced by a radio command link. The new guidance system is immune to IR countermeasures which could be used by enemy tanks. Both upgrades can be performed on the TOW-2B missile and offer savings of 20-40% compared to new acquisitions. The US Army is testing the modified missile and has funded procurement of the wireless TOW 2B version through fiscal years 2007 - 2009.

Because the wireless system is built into the missile and the missile case, the wireless TOW works with existing launch platforms - including the Improved Target Acquisition System, Improved Bradley Acquisition Subsystem, TOW 2 Subsystem and M220 Ground TOW. The system performs exactly as the wire-guided version, enabling soldiers to continue using the proven weapon without changing tactics or incurring additional training. TOW remains the Army and Marine Corps' primary heavy anti-tank and precision assault weapon deployed on more than 4,000 TOW launch platforms including the Army "Stryker," Bradley Fighting Vehicle System and High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle. On October 10, 2006 the US Army awarded Raytheon a first procurement program for the Wireless TOW. In December 2006 Pakistan was reported to plan to convert 121 TOW launchers introducing wireless guidance, replacing the older BGM 71 with the over 3,000 TOW 2A missiles.

TOW Bunker Buster

With upgrades for the veteran TOW II missiles are underway, Raytheon is promoting a new modification, featuring the Bunker-Buster version of the TOW, which recently "spiraled out" of the TOW program. TOW missiles are undergoing improvements that will maintain them in service through 2025. The TOW Bunker Buster uses a fragmentation high-explosive bulk charge to breach up to 8 inches (20.3cm) of double-reinforced concrete walls and destroy fortified targets in complex urban terrain. While traditional shaped charges can penetrate entire buildings, the TOW bunker buster disperses its pressure at the point of penetration. The new warhead will be installed in TOW missiles as part of an upgrade which also involves the introduction of an RF link, eliminating the wire guidance which limited the missile's range and usability in certain conditions.

counters continuous-wave, monopulse, and pulse Doppler radar threats. The SIRFC will function as the core of a fully integrated combat suite for helicopters and other platforms (including F-16s), coordinating IR, laser, and radar threat data and countermeasures. ITT was awarded an advanced development contract for the SIRFC in September 1990, and an EMD contract in July 1994. But development fell way behind schedule in the 1990s. Hmm - the best look I have had of the Thundarr yet.

The quarter circle LERX are a distinctive feature as well as the kidney shaped intakes.

The flying photo showing the lower surface clearly shows the MiG 21 delta lineage of the wings

Thanks.
