Return of the Viraat

Post by Harry »

It may or may not warrant a new thread but >50% of the topics on the forum are mostly dormant.

Hope you spend as much time with this as it took making it (not likely),

Absolutely incredible Harry. Thanks so much for sharing.

A quick confirmation, the Chetak's rotor doesn't fold?
Does the naval Dhruv's rotor fold the same way the Seaking's does?

Harry,

You have outdone yourself this time. Absolutely marvelous article.

Vick,

The Chetak's rotor does indeed fold. There is a picture of one with the main rotor folded in Harry's article.

I am speechless Harry......great write-up and even better pictures. I read the whole thing in one shot although my wife has given me 5 last warnings to call it a night!!!

I liked most the part "Virat carries more armament than entire western fleet put together" and "Virat is actually providing protection to other escort fleet not the other way around". Gives a good answer too all them carrier bashing navies in Indian neighborhood!

photo of the Mysore's VLS was great. heh heh.

what I want to know if all the 3 delhis, 5 rajputs, 3 godavari and 2 brahmaputra have got the barak cells ?

and this new submerged thermal camera thing for subs sounds interesting  yum yum could trail it behind ships like a towed sonar and catch the fish too.

Great read Harry.

"IN-614 has the new Roshini RWR while IN-614 has the traditional ARI.18223." needs correction.

Harry...truly amazing work. Just spectacular. Standing ovation! :)

I second Singha's question. Do all the 3 Delhis, 5 Rajputs, 3 Godavaris and 2 Brahmaputras have got Barak cells? Also will the last Brahmaputra Class also have the Barak SAM?

Dang it, chalk another one up to male patterned blindness.

My other question still stands, does the naval & CG Dhruv have rotor folding ability?

Also, the Harriers have only two HPs for AAMs if they use their combat fuel tanks. Will the upgrade allow the SHARs to carry more AAMs? Perhaps a dual rail system for the Derbies?

An awesome artice, Harry.
The complicated tactics have proven themselves against the sensors on all aircraft intercepted in real time, from the F/A-18C of the USN to the Atlantique-1 of the PN.
Did the IN actually intercept an F-18 or was it during an exercise? If it actually intercepted one, where can I get more info?

Harry,

Lovely! Do tell us more about F/A-18C. From what I had heard circa 1997, our Harriers have been jumped by USN birds number of times with them banking to reveal their missile load.

Not all 5 Rajputs. D54 and/or D55 has the STAR and Barak for sure.
Did the IN actually intercept an F-18 or was it during an exercise?
Read the 7th para of the INAS 300 section here,
http://www.acig.org/artman/publish/article_432.shtml

I have the photo but it's small and grainy. Many such a/c have been intercepted since induction.
How many Single seaters and how many two seaters are operational?
15 FRS.51. The one that had the runway accident was being fixed about a while ago. Two T.60s. There are only two T.4(I) trainers and not four.
does the naval & CG Dhruv have rotor folding ability?
Yes.
Also, the Harriers have only two HPs for AAMs if they use their combat fuel tanks
They have DRDO made dual-rails.
Do you have more pics of the hangar by any chance?
Yes. Will try to put up later. If I put it on AFM forum, our friend defencefart.com will steal it.

Exactly what kind of an accident was that? any details? If the aircraft is recovered, I think i will remove it from the attrition db.

No, they are the exhaust outlets. Any Sea eagle that does'nt have those is a dummy/training round.
The site's color combination is giving me a headache!
LOL, that's the ACIG style and nothing much can be done about that. At least it's unique.

Thanks Harry for the Dhruv confirmation. The dual rails by DRDO is for the Magic II, what about the Derby?

The INS Ganga seems to generate its own smoke screen :)

Unfortunately the smoke is hiding the rear search radar... Is that search radar the STAR or the visible radar on the main mast the STAR?

Also, when you say STAR, you mean the EL/M-2238, right?

Great effort! The piece also has the best photos of the Delhi-class destroyers I have ever seen. These two stand out:

Shiv,

1) One of the quadruple launchers for the Uran.
2) The turret of the AK-100 gun.
3) The forward single rail launcher for the Shtil.
4) One of the RBU lauchers.
5) A shield behind the Shtil launcher to deflect the exhaust gases at launch.
6) Two of the Orekh target illumination radars for the Shtil.

Someone please tell me something more about the Shtil.

What is an RBU?

Note that here is a No "7" on top of the picture.

Shiv you can find some Shtil info on BR itself under Delhi class section.

the RBU-6000 is a MLRS type launcher for anti sub and anti torpedo rockets(depth charges). if a incoming torpedo or nearby sub is detected the ship can lay a pattern of charges in the path. its the CIWS of undersea warfare. Each indian ship carries atleast one and usually two. various types of rockets are available.

No7 is the Fregat radar (2 panels back-2-back)

Just read the BR section on Delhi class.

Some very nice paintings which they didn't realise had been transferred along with the ship. The ship also has an extensive photogallery of all the previous Hermes and aircraft operated by them.

Speaking which, crew accomodation and interior decor have been vastly improved, all thanks to the Capt.

Vikramaditya is expected to arrive only in 2008/09, that is still three to four years away. By then, the Captain will have either retired or been promoted to Commodore or Rear Admiral.

No. Like was mentioned, he's a Rear Admiral now. This is the last ship.

By then, the Captain will have either retired or been promoted to Commodore or Rear Admiral.

Capts for 5+ years are Commodores when based on land. During R-33's period, he should become CNS if all goes well.

Can't ranks superior to captain be a CO of a platform? Although, the subordinates would still refer to the CO as captain as long as he is the CO of the platform.
