Perhaps people underestimate the meaning of "Brilliance" or "radiance"

Think a nuclear explosion. Think a thousand suns.

Shiv, thanks for the video. Can you confirm what is suggested in the report below about how the aircraft flew ? In particular, did the aircraft perform the manoeuvres at a height of 250 feet?

http://rediff.com/news/2003/may/04lca1.htm

Excerpt

Cruising at a speed of 600km/h and climbing to a height of 250feet, both the prototypes, codenamed Delta-I and Delta-II, flew in close formation and conducted breathtaking manoeuvres, including crisscrossing in midair, teardrop turns, waggle wings, and zoom pull-ups.

Tejas is a quality. Its not a plural of anything, AFAIK. Hauma or Ashok please? Thanks!

Beautiful name. Tamasoma tejogamaya! (HH?) (twisting it slightly--a little bank to one side !)

Added later: oops! did not notice it when I first posted, but Imtiaz has posted all the meanings just above! Thanks Imtiaz! :)

thanks Shiv: just saw that very gratifying clip with the engine noise. Hope this is the beginning of the true Indian conquest of the air.

Added later:
That place from where you seem to have shot the video looks like a familiar spot in my native city! We have spent many a day looking at planes take off and land in that locale in years past.

BTW regarding tejas: it s neutar noun which is many times used by default as plural. So I think we should not make the plurak tejases but just keep it tejas or tejas'. Those who feel that it is not a martial name should realize that the word tej (from the same root) in hindi is for sword, analogous to Messer in German. There is a great mantra in the yajur veda (6.2.3) which has the following phrase in describing the arrow that destroyed the tripuras:
viShNuM tejanaM
"viShNu became the cutting edge (tejanaM) of rudra's arrow". Let us hope this vimAna is the tejanaM of our mleccha destroying force. :D

Tejas is radiance in Sanskrit.
Tejas is pronounced Tehas is Spanish and Texas is also pronounced as Tehas is Spanish. Therefore, Tejas = Texas. :D

Vajpayee names LCA Tejas - Business Standard

V K Aatre, scientific adviser to the defence minister and director-general of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), said the two technology demonstrators of the aircraft had done a total of 76 flights, and with the prototype vehicle, which is on the anvil, it was going to break the sound barrier. “It’s going supersonic very shortly,” he said.

Without naming anybody, he said when the National Democratic Alliance government came to power, none thought that the light combat aircraft and the advanced light helicopter project would take off at all, because deliberate attempts were made to demoralise the scientists and engineers behind the project.

Another photo - from the Hindu.

http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/holnus/02041808.jpg

Also, the story, which in addition to information given by other news reports, gives the nicknames of the two test pilots.

http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/holnus/02041808.htm

(since the link may not last - here's the full text).

LCA shows its prowess

Bangalore, May. 4. (PTI): The indigenous multi-role Light Combat Aircraft today demonstrated its awesome prowess - as if two "arrow heads" struck the sky.

The technology demonstrators TD-1 and TD-2 (see photo) of the LCA flew past Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and his Deputy L K Advani in formation at 600 kmph and at an altitude of 200 feet over the HAL airport here.

The dignitaries were spellbound specially when Group Captain "Chottu" Rakesh Bhaduria and Squadron Leader "Soggy" Sunith Krishna made a zoom pull up in the sky.

The two tail-less, delta-winged, digital, fly-by-wire aircraft, christened as "Tejas" by Vajpayee at the function, made a display for nearly ten minutes and waggled in salute to those present at the occasion before making a smooth landing.

Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister V K Aatre said "today is auspicious 'Akshaya Tritheya,' the day, according to folklore when Parashurama started his `Digvijaya.' It is said that everything is going to multiply if you start on this day.... and it augurs well for LCA to spawn other generation of fighters for the country".

Teer made it to the shortlist? Not bad-as they say tukka maara tha, theek nikla.
The LCA is abeaut.

Note the maneovers performed-a clear indication of the robustness of the FBW and the piltos confidence wrt the same.

Wrt the name...lots of interpretations.Like it.It has class.
Of course,an incoming Astra might introduce itself to a Paki F16 with the standard hindi fillum dialogue-"Apun ko Teja Bhai ne bheja hain, kya?" :)

So true.DDM is often hand in glove.Case in point-read Asian Ages usual articles about the IAF,DRDO,this or that.Or even the ToI's,assorted DDM's attacks on HAL and IAF for MiG21 crashes giving MiG MAPO a clean chit. The farmhouse owning, whisky swilling "analysts" in lush Delhi enclaves with BM driving kids sure dont like this LCA,IJT,ALH etc stuff.Cuts into their pocket.

Was Aatre generalizing about the stories in the DDM or was he really hinting that someone or some group was deliberately sabotaging the engineers and scientists efforts?

If so he should come out and declare names so those idiots could be replaced!

This from AW&ST, March 3, 2003:

NAL opts for French diesel:

Snecma-AEDS venture SMA has contracted with India's Nationsl Aerospace Laboratory to supply its Jet A fuel Diesel engine for NAL's Hansa 4 light aircraft program. The first SMA SR305-230 engine, certificated by the fAA in 2002, wil be delivered later this year, and series production of the four-seat all-composite aircraft is slated to begin in late 2004. The SR305-230, in which Renault is also a partner, was picked to power a mini flying test-bed to verify avionics and other onboard systems for the Light Combat Aircraft and other Indian air force programs. This aircraft, to be built by the Indian Defence Research and Development Organization's Center for Airborne Systems, is to begin development in June.
What "other IAF programs" and "begin dev in June"?

It was not Aatre, but GF who mentioned it. He seemed to be pointing at the retired Admirals and others who wrote derogatory stuff about the project - that it would be outdated by the time it is inducted etc.

Nothing further needs to be done. The LCA is an adequate answer to such naysayers. Just like the PSLV-D1 was to those who were trying to run down ISRO after two successive ASLV failures. Nobody dares to run down ISRO anymore. Similarly, with the LCA, ALH, IJT (and hopefully a Sitara-2 AJT) taking to the skies, naysayers of the aviation sector will be forced to change their stance.

I am impressed with Imtiaz Ahmad's research on the word.

This is unheard of! Close formation aerobatics and very low level aerobatics at this stage of development. Must also be risky - no time to recover if there is a problem.

[quote] For those ecstatic at the projection of the Tejas' 'Made in India' tag as a symbol of indigenous capability, a sobering thought. It's engine is American, its avionics a combination of French, Israeli and Swedish components

Righto. Also indicates their confidence in the aircafts basic setup including FBW to a high degree.FWIW,the test pilots till date have really loved the a/c handling. That should count for something too,i suppose!

Vishal Thapar just added his name to a long list of Lifafa journalists. :p

For those ecstatic at the projection of the Tejas' 'Made in India' tag as a symbol of indigenous capability, a sobering thought. It's engine is American,

So?The Gripen utilises an American Ge404 derived Volvo Flygmotor powerplant. So its hardly Swedish then?
The ge404 is just a test engine,for pete's sake.

its avionics a combination of French, Israeli and Swedish components,

Bull sh1t .
The F/A22 has the Elbit HMS,so does the LCA.That makes both "undindigenous" and "Israeli" i guess.
There is no Swedish involvement in the LCA avionics TODAY.Erricsson just served as consultants for telling us how to proceed with MMR development.Subsequently, the contract was terminated as the LCA team felt they didnt need any further inputs on how to setup infrastructure etc and anyway no inputs were forthcoming.
Sextant Avionique is just providing a few measly Displays.
Everything else in the avionics-Mission Computers,Radar,Display Processors,Host of Avionics LRU's,databus associated control eqpt -is Indian.
Of course,Lifafa Thapar just forgot to mention it.Talk about shameless.

and its carbon composite wings Italian.

Bull again.Alenia ALONG WITH NAL and HAL codeveloped the wing technology.
Codevelopment does NOT EQUAL ITALIAN.
We have proprietary rights to the data.Wonder why the Italians would be so generous if the wings were italian.
But Thapar and his ilk know better.

Like i said, hand over a glass of bubbly and some will sell their(if existent) souls.

Tejas is a beautiful name. Remember, TACDE's (which should be renamed to Air Combat Establishment in my humble opinion) motto is Tejas Tejasvi Namaham ---> I am the Glory of the Glorious. FYI...our beloved PM can call it Tejas or whatever. But for me, the LCA will always be Rani --> Rambha's cousin. :D

Dunno if I like the name chosen. I wish it had more "punch" to it, like a sword or a predatory bird. Think of the F-102 Delta Dagger, the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

I wonder if "LCA" will stick rather than its official name. Nobody calls the UH-1 chopper the "Iroquois", it is and will remain the "Huey"
