Nayak,

While the thread rule constrains it to photos only, I think it is worthwhile effort to chalk out the weapons we have seen in these pictures (I say this with specific reference to an EconomicTimes news link which passes off Chinese AT police as Mumbai ATS). I have chosen the standard variant, there are various variants actually being used. Please use pictures here to recognize the specific firearms in various pictures:

1. The AK series assault-rifles: http://world.guns.ru/assault/ak.jpg

2. The INSAS series assault-rifles: http://world.guns.ru/assault/insas.jpg

3. The MP-5 series SMGs: http://world.guns.ru/smg/hk_mp5a2.jpg

4. The Glock series pistols: http://world.guns.ru/handguns/GLOCK17.JPG

5. The Dragunovs designated-marksman rifles: http://world.guns.ru/sniper/svd_s.jpg

6. The Sig 550 series assault-rifles: http://world.guns.ru/assault/sig_sg550.jpg

7. The Carl Gustavs downgraded atmgs: http://world.guns.ru/grenade/cg_m2-1.jpg

There are also Enfield/Ishapore bolt-action rifles (http://world.guns.ru/rifle/smle1mk3.jpg), FN FAL based SLRs (http://world.guns.ru/assault/fal_imbel.jpg) and S&W or Webley derived revolvers with various police.

All images shamelessly linked to world.guns.ru.

The picture used for "ATS" is that of a Chinese police force. The Garud picture too might not be accurate, unless it was taken during Red Flag 2008 (though I doubt it).

Why did NSG take 9 hrs to get there?
30 Nov 2008, 0508 hrs IST, TNN
NEW DELHI: The terrorists strike Mumbai at 9.30pm. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh is in Kerala. He is briefed about the attack on the city’s
prime locations. By the time Deshmukh grasps the enormity of the situation, 90 minutes have gone by.

He rings Union home minister Shivraj Patil at 11pm and asks for NSG commandos. "How many men?" Patil asks. "200," says the CM. Patil calls NSG chief J K Dutt and tells him to send 200 battle-ready commandos to Mumbai.

Most of the NSG men have to be roused from sleep. They don their uniforms, strap on safety gear, collect ammo and firearms. It is discovered that the only plane that can take 200 men, the IL 76, is not in Delhi but Chandigarh. Precious minutes are ticking by.

The IL 76 pilot is woken, the plane refuelled. It reaches Delhi at 2am. By the time the commandos get in and the plane takes off, four-and-a-half hours have elapsed. Experts say that unless a response is mounted within 30 minutes of an attack, the enemy can assume key defensive positions.

It takes the aircraft almost three hours to land at Mumbai airport. Unlike the Boeing and Airbus, IL 76 is a slow plane. By the time the NSG commandos board the waiting buses it is 5.25am.

The buses take another 40 minutes to reach the designated place in south Mumbai where the commandos are briefed, divided into different groups and sent out on their mission.

By the time they start their operation, it is 7am — in other words, nine-and-a-half hours after the terror strike.

Many lives might have been saved had this delay not happened. The obvious question is why is the NSG stationed only in Delhi. When Indian cities are vulnerable to terror attacks, why is there no commando force like the NSG, or its units, in every city?
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Why_ ... 775003.cms

Enough said.. we need NSG brigade for every city from now.

Vicky Nanjappa & Krishnakumar P | November 29, 2008 18:02 IST

The 60-hour terror showdown finally came to an end at the Taj Mahal [Images] Palace on Saturday.

Salute Our Heroes in Uniform!

As the entire world watched the drama unfold, National Security Guard commandos braved all odds to fight terrorists for nearly 60 hours in the Taj hotel.

One of the commandos, who was part of the action, described to rediff.com how the drama unfolded and the ordeal they underwent to flush out the terrorists who had held the entire city ransom.

The commando, who did not wish to be named, said the battle was over at 3 PM on Friday itself. The terrorists had started to lose motivation at 3 PM on Friday. In his own words, the NSG commando says woh log toh bore ho gaye.

'On day one, when we began the combat, these men were extremely aggressive. We had just entered the hotel and realised that they were in a very strong position. On the second day, it looked like they were losing ground. However, they did not seem to be giving up.

'The exchange was fierce between both parties and they resorted to hurling grenades several times in order to block the route for us. It was actually the third day that made the difference. The exchange of fire escalated and we decided to engage in the fire and not let up. This gun battle in fact broke them and we took the upper hand in the battle.'

The mindset of the terrorist:
'As I had pointed out earlier, these terrorists were aggressive by nature. They were running about and most of the time they were cursing us in Hindi. They looked determined to fight till the very end. However, on day three we saw their attitude sagging.

'We continued to fire at them and they retorted only with a single shot. That is how low their morale was. Unlike the first day when they were coming on to us and firing back, day three saw them taking cover most of the time. They kept hurling grenades at us. However, that too came down when we retaliated.

'The terrorists hardly spoke and we could never hear their conversation. On day three, when they realised that they were losing the battle they began screaming and cursing us in bad language. I think they were speaking in Hindi.

The final assault:
'After we realised that their position had weakened, our next aim was to step in save the remaining hostages. But we realised that we had approached the end game and so did they. As the night wore on they began killing the rest of the hostages, who they had kept in a room. There was nothing we could do about it.

'When we realised that they had no more hostages left to use as a shield, we began increasing the pressure and began pushing them to a corner and got ready for an all out assault. By 6 AM on Saturday, we had them totally cornered. They were all killed in the ensuing exchange.

'During the last few minutes, both hurled grenades at each other and due to this a part of the building caught fire. The last of the terrorists was caught in the fire and he fell off the window and lost his life.

The numbers:
'A total of 180 commandos were involved in the operation. Some of us took a break from time to time. Some of us briefly even went to the Nariman House to finish off the operation.

'During the operation at the Taj, we saw there were more than 8 terrorists. However, we do not know how many civilians were trapped in the building.

Tactics and weapons:
'The idea of the terrorists was to continue fighting for as long as possible. They too were aware that their battle could be on only until they had hostages as human shields. They had with them AK-47s and hand grenades and it looked like they had a lot of ammunition on them.

'All through the battle they tried to keep us away from them. We also do not rule out that they were even trying to bring the building down by starting fires all over. We had at our disposal a host of automatic weapons and stun grenades, which we used with great effect to scare and disorient the terrorists.

Mumbai terror attack
Near-perfect coordination with little political interference paid off
Saturday, 29 November , 2008, 18:52

New Delhi: It was the least political intervention and near perfect coordination among the forces, apart from the bravery of commandoes, that led to the success of the anti-terror operation in Mumbai, defence officials said on Saturday.

Black Cat commandoes of the elite National Security Guard (NSG) along with the Indian Navy's Marcos marine commandos and three armed forces calibrated the nearly 60-hour long Operation Black Tornado to successfully neutralise the terrorists holed up inside three landmark buildings in south Mumbai.

"The key to success in the operation was the least political intervention. We assured the political top brass that we would keep them updated on the situation but also sought an assurance that there will be least political intervention in the operation," a senior defence official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The 477 rigorously-trained commandoes earned the gratitude of the nation as they successfully tackled a group of armed terrorists, wrested two five-hotels and a residential-cum-business building in India's commercial capital from them and gunned down nine ultras and captured one.

"The second key point of the whole operation was the better coordination among the three forces. A four-tier line of attack was formulated to smoke out the terrorists," another defence official added.

"In the first ring were the NSG commandoes and Marcos followed by Army personnel in the second. Third line of attack comprised the ATS (Anti-Terrorism Squad) preceded by police personnel in the fourth," the official said.

In the whole operation, the Indian Air Force (IAF) provided logistics support with its IL-76 transport aircraft ferrying the commandoes from the national capital to Mumbai early Thursday.

One Mi-17 airdropped commandoes on Nariman House, where the gunmen had held a number of people, including several Jews, hostage.

The IAF also stationed its two Mi-8 helicopters in Mumbai that were used for surveillance of the coastline after the terror attack.

The longest terror drama in Indian history also saw the media reporting the developments minute by minute and that called for media management on the part of the forces.

"We also planned for a better media management since yesterday (Friday) morning. We realized that while the media was playing a positive role by updating the nation about the incident, the rumours spread by using the media were also damaging.
"Hence, we requested mediapersons to withhold certain details vital for the operation and arranged for media interactions with senior officials to give them credible information about the incident," the official added.
Very good slide show from DNA detailing NSG action on Nariman House with pics:

Shot at, his pants were held together with staples

Priyanko Sarkar | TNN

Rajbir Singh Lamba, whose left hand is in plaster, and who had just come out of facial surgery, is a simple man at heart who holds your hand when he speaks.

The 32-year-old NSG commando from Dalanwas village in Haryana was engaged in the Taj battle. “We adopted a top-down approach. After sanitising the rooftop and sixth floor, I came down with my team to Room 473 where we found the terrorists. I put an explosive charge on the door and ran back but the explosion was neutralised because the terrorists had put tables and chairs against the wall. So instead, we were blown back and the roof fell on us.’’ Fortunately, the damaged top half of the door allowed Lamba a peek into the room. As he had been informed, a terrorist wearing a red T-shirt was crouched at one end. “When I told him to put his hands up, someone fired from behind him, injuring my hand.’’

Lamba then went in with the now slain team captain Sandeep Unnikrishnan and Subhedar Firechand, who gave a first-hand account of events. Lamba washed his bleeding hand and was told to lob grenades so that two teams could break into the room under cover of smoke.

When the door exploded, the recoil threw the entire team off its feet. “The passageway was small and the charge too much,’’ says Lamba. The terrorists lobbed a grenade at the NSG team, ripping open Lamba’s pants, now held together by staples. It also burnt the left side of his face. But the NSG attacked again, and this time the two terrorists were killed. But Unnikrishnan died too. “We had no maps and had to improvise all the time,’’ says Lamba. “All this took up valuable time.’’

Also at Bombay Hospital is NSG’s Captain Amitendra Kumar Singh , who was part of the rescue operations at the Trident Hotel. His left eye is bandaged. It wells up with blood every three minutes but he doesn’t bother until a nurse wipes it with a tissue. He grimly warns, “These kind of operations are not restricted to Kashmir anymore. The attacks can happen anywhere, anytime. Till people are not aware and don’t take a stand, no security force in the world can protect them.’’

NDA buddies remember tough commando with a big heart
Prasenjit Mund | TNN

Kolkata: When the name Sandeep Unnikrishnan was mentioned among the NSG casualties on Friday, there was a sinking feeling in my gut. Was it our Unni? But then, in the forces, you cannot even pray that it is “some other Unni”. Within minutes, confirmation came. An old buddy called up to say, “Yaar, Sandeep is no more.”
Unni had died a hero. And those of us who had seen him and trained alongside him at the National Defence Academy (NDA) had a rush of old memories—of a buddy who would stick with you no matter what, of a top-class sportsman, of nostalgic songs and imaginary girlfriends and of a soldier’s soldier who was always aware that the uniform came with great responsibility.
In 1995, we were a bunch of gangly 18-year-olds, wondering what the hell we were doing climbing up Sinhgad fort on a miserable, rainy day, when I first met Unni. He was an icky, a first termer, bone-weary, but always gung-ho. When we made it to the top, the first stop was for a fill of water. Soggy, bushed and thirsty, we ran to the natural spring that has been feeding soldiers since the days of Chhatrapati Shivaji. Unni was the first to reach and started drawing water from the well. We lined up with our canteens, but a tourist first held out her water bottle. Unni filled it. Then, another. Unni filled that too.
Within seconds, there was a long line of tourists waiting for water. Without a word—and with a smile to us—Unni dutifully doled out his generosity. He never got to us. He himself never got a sip. The order came to move on.
It was a small, selfless act. Who knew that 13 years on, he would make the ultimate sacrifice—lead from the front and die saving a fellow commando? He lived up to the “Olympian” spirit (as NDA Oscar Squadron cadets call themselves), striving to go “faster, higher, and stronger”.
“He was not meant to be in the Mumbai operation. He was an instructor at the NSG training centre in Manesar. But because he was an old hand at this, and one of the best, he was sent as part of the first reaction team,” said Major Sushil, one of his coursemates. I couldn’t imagine the rather skinny Unni in the NSG. But just as his happy-go-lucky face masked a ruthless and determined soldier, so did his thin physique hide a tough, never-giveup spirit.
“It showed itself during Camps Greenhorn and Rovers (said to be the toughest for the age group) at NDA. He never knew the word ‘quit’. He just kept going,” recalled one of his buddies now in the Special Forces. “During the 15-km cross-country races at NDA, there would be shouts of ‘Unni, Unni’ in the last 500 metres. Most of us were dead by then. But he would tuck his head into his chest, close his eyes and run for his life, for his squadron.”
It was this ruggedness—and a great sense of humour—that helped him survive three tours of Kashmir, two stints in Siachen and the tough NSG training.
“The army was his life. In his room in Bangalore, he had a collage of photographs of each of his coursemates and from life in the NDA. He took it everywhere with him,” said Major S Kaul.

Terrorists were killed on 18th floor
Nitin Yeshwantrao I TNN

Mumbai: The two terrorists killed inside the Oberoi-Trident were believed to have been pushed to the wall by NSG commandos, who shot them inside the washroom of a suite on the 18th floor.
The heavily armed duo had severely damaged hotel property as the mirrors on almost all floors were smashed and the walls riddled with bullets.
It’s understood that the terrorist first targeted the front desk where two security guards, a bell-boy and the reception staff were killed. The duo moved towards Tiffin restaurant and opened indiscriminate fire.
Sources said the bodies of three women were found on the corridor of the 19th floor. It was also learnt that six persons who were hiding a service room were found in a pool of blood.

Shot, burnt, maimed: Terrorists died violently
Shibu Thomas & Rajiv Sharma I TNN

Mumbai: Bodies of eight of the terrorists, who wreaked havoc in south Mumbai, bore not only bullet wounds but also severe burn injuries, said officials from the post-mortem centre at JJ Hospital in Byculla on Saturday.
Two fingers of a terrorist, who was slain by security forces at Oberoi Hotel in Nariman Point, were severed. “He may have been shot on his fingers or lost them in an explosion,’’ an official told TOI reporters. The second terrorist, also brought dead from Oberoi, had been shot in both eyes.
Severely charred bodies of three terrorists were brought from Taj Hotel on Saturday evening to the post-mortem centre, said police officials. All the eight terrorists were young, fair and of South Asian origin. “The Oberoi terrorists would be between 20 and 25 years of age,’’ said officials, who didn’t wish to be named.
An official from the postmortem centre said, “We have preserved the terrorists’ hair, long bones, deep muscles, blood and teeth samples to find out about their DNA type.’’ These samples will help the investigating agencies to establish their identities.
A preliminary examination has revealed that the terrorists had multiple bullet wounds as well as burn injuries. “This means that they were also injured in the explosions,’’ said an official. “While four of them were stockily-built, one was lean,’’ he added.
DNA samples of some of the foreigners who were killed in the attack have also been preserved. Underlining the importance of conducting a post-mortem on every body, a senior doctor said, “Each case is different and it is important to carry out an autopsy.’’ This will help investigators understand the nature of the explosives used by the terrorists.
Police surgeon Dr S M Patil said doctors from all other postmortem centers have been deputed at JJ Hospital. “We have requested the police to bring in the bodies at the earliest to prevent further decomposition,’’ he said.

Yes many do. but they are unwilling to help those who is incapable of reading the very page he is posting in and know for himself.
that bit of information is right here in this page. Do NOT derail this thread again.

Labradors play key role in operation

Mumbai: They marched in fearlessly braving bullets and explosives in a terrorist-hit building and in the end played no mean role in securing the premises.

The two sniffer dogs of the National Security Guard (NSG) went about their task with diligence for about 15 hours during the encounter in the Nariman House along with their masters — the commandos.

It was just another day at work for the NSG Labradors who are routinely trained to sniff out unidentified objects and explosives. And they did so in good measure.

But the Labradors found the frenzied ‘welcome’ and the impromptu applause from scores of photographers and TV cameramen a little too hot to handle when they emerged from the building accompanied by their trainers.

The dogs also showed signs of discomfort as flash bulbs continued to pop and were reluctant to move forward. They made sure to stay close to their trainers.

Four hostages and an NSG Major were killed in the Nariman House encounter and the elite commandos killed two terrorists. The commandos also received a rousing welcome from the locals when they came out after the operation.

Shouts of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai, Vande Mataram’ reverberated in the narrow lanes of the area when the commandos emerged from the gruelling 15-hour-long final assault on the terrorists.

Mixed emotions

The fatigue compounded by the tragedy of losing two of their men was clearly evident on their faces but the joy of the success of the mission more than neutralised the hard grind. — PTI

Why the action took as long as it did

Mumbai: The high motivation levels of the terrorists, who laid siege to the Taj Mahal hotel, prolonged the fierce gun battle for about 60 hours, said National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, who participated in the operation.

“The terrorists were trained but not as good as we were. But what really prolonged the entire operation was that they were highly motivated and never bothered about their lives and even if they did, it was only to take more lives,” havildar Azad Singh, a commando, said.

Mr. Singh, who had been at the hotel for the entire duration and was also involved in a dramatic shootout with two terrorists on Saturday, said the operation was hampered because of darkness as the lights were destroyed by the terrorists.

He said, “the area was also booby trapped which made it more difficult for the operation.”

Giving details of Saturday’s shoot-out, he said, “we were doing room checks when shots were fired at us. We ducked a grenade hurled inside the room.”

After a few seconds of the blast, the terrorists fired yet again making the commandos answer with double firepower.

“I was asked to move ahead and I did so by firing continuously. Inside the room was a terrorist who had got shot and he staggered behind and hit the window. I sensed an opportunity and fired at him and he fell out because of the shots,” he added.

Another commando, Rameshwaran, said, “we didn’t want to move in and we waited for some time. After some minutes, we saw another terrorist peeping out to see if we had left. The moment he did so, we fired at him killing him instantly.”

A commando, who did not wish to be identified, said, “The terrorists were mainly holed up in the upper section and we were downstairs. Initially every time we made an attempt to move out, grenades were hurled at us to prevent us from doing so.”

He said the terrorists had intentionally set on fire certain portions of the hotel to divert attention.

“Our top officers were present throughout the operation. It is a combined effort of the NSG, the Army and the Navy,” he added.

The NSG commandos, who executed the operation in the country’s longest terrorist siege here in the recent past, are specially equipped with a set of special tools. — PTI
