78 Indian MiG-29s will be modernised

The Air Force of India signed (11 March) the contract with cost of $800 million for modernization of 78 MiG-29 fighters (3 squadrons). From the Russian side the document was signed by "Rosoboronexport" and by the United Aircraft Construction Corporation (OAK), reported the Indian Media with the reference to the Ministry of Defense of India. In accordance to the contract, the period of the operation of the aircraft will be prolonged for the period from 25 to 40 years. The aircrafts will be equipped with air-to-air missiles of the distant range of action, the modernized engines RD-33, the Zhuk airborne radar with the phased antenna array, the all-glass cab and the servicing rod. The first two prototypes of these modernized MiG-29s will be assembled in Russia, while the remaining aircraft will be modernized at the HAL plant in Nasik. The work on the contract is planned to complete untill 2010.
The signed agreement also provides the organization in India a service center for the maintenance of the MiG-29 aircraft and the ship version of it, the last is planned to be introduced in the Navy toward the end of 2008. At present the AF of India uses the obsolete MiG-21 and MiG-23. At the given moment in the Indian Air Force, remains 29 fighter squadrons which is short of the required strength of 45 squadrons. For eliminating the increasing depletion, the Indian Govt quickly searches for additional resources. Thus, at present the talks completed with the French company Thales about the modernization and time life prolongation (up to 25 years) for 52 Mirage-2000 aircraft with the cost of 1.5 billion Euro ($1.95 billion).
