Second Indian Naval Aviation Il-38 Arrives in Russia for Upgrade
The second of five Indian naval aviation airplanes agreed to by contract has arrived at the Il’yushin Aviation Complex for upgrade, the general director of the Il’yushin Aviation Complex, Viktor Livanov, reported to Interfax-AVN on Tuesday.
“The second Il-38 airplane has arrived in Russia for upgrade on the basis of the agreement to upgrade five Il-38 into the Il-38SD variant which was signed in September by FGUP Rosoboronehksport, India’s defense ministry and the Il’yushin AK,” V. Livanov said.
He recalled that the first Indian Il-38 flew to Russia for upgrade at the end of March of this year.
“Upgrade of the second Il-38 airplane will take approximately 10 months," V. Livanov said.
He noted that “which India lost two Il-38 airplanes at once as the result of a catastrophe, the contract which was concluded before this still has not been looked at again. It as before provides for the upgrade of five airplanes.
V. Livanov reported that upgrade of the Il-38 will take place at the experimental works of the Il’yushin Aviation Complex.
In the process of the upgrade, new equipment and apparatus, including the Sea Snake targeting and search complex, will be installed on the Il-38 airplanes, which subsequently will receive the designation Il-38SD.
V. Livanov expressed regret that “in work on the upgrade of Il-38N airplanes for the Russian navy's aviation, a substantial gap from previously accepted periods is being observed.
“The first experimental Il-38N is still at the stage of flight-development tests," V. Livanov said.
