X-post from Armoured vehicles thread

This stationery tank freighter snuck up suddenly upon me as my train passed it https://picasaweb.google.com/1133537813 ... directlink. By the time I could retrieve my camera from my bag, rush to the coach door, I had no time to check camera settings which were on full manual mode. So , I just pointed my camera and hoped for the best. I could squeeze of 3 shots before the freighter faded in the distance.

The photos are about 2 hours old.

That looks like a BFAT. Judging from the muck on the track and wheels, the tanks have been put to some use in muddy terrain. Perhaps, returning from an exercise?

The freighter was hauled by a single BZA (Vijaywada) WAG-7, was in SR territory headed further south from what I could gather.

This looks to be from some Republic Day parade. Any ideas which year this was taken?

From this angle of Tank-Ex Karna, there looks to be a lot of gap between the body and the turret, which could be an area of vulnerability.

Hiten: These images are spectacular and pure gems. Good job.

If you have a widescreen monitor, you will do these pictures justice. Try and see it on a 27" iMac...even the 21.5 iMac works wonders.

all tanks are vulnerable eastern or western or how good the armour is or whatever someone say.

whether turret is blown off or not intense heat and speed of projectile penetration will kill the crew instantly which makes tank useless since no Armour is safe from anti tank missiles.

^^ One of the IN pilots deputed to fly these UH-3s was mentioning as to the horrible condition these UH-3s were delivered to IN and how they were a virtual write-off...IN burnt the midnight oil and with tons of jugaad managed to make them operational and flying.

^^ with everything being unmanned these days, how hard would it be to have the gun remote controlled and not exposing the gunner? Additionally they should do away with those "tube lights" and get LED's and should probably protect them from incoming enemy fire

The fixed Dish antenna on top of the bridge mystifies me. What good is a fixed dish on a fast intercepter vessel?

It won't even catch Tata Sky with that boat moving about, leave alone any sat comm.

I think it is an exaggeration to say that "everything is unmanned these days". It would not be difficult to have a remote controlled 12.7 mm gun but 99% of 12.7 mm (0.5 in) guns in the world are manned because they are heavy enough to engage "medium" targets more than 2 km away but too light for formal conflict with cannons and missiles. They are mostly anti-personnel and anti-materiel. On a CG ship they will take on pirates in fishing vessels/dhows etc. At 2000 meters plus the 12.7 outranges any hand held pirate rifles and even RPGs. Ships with anything heavier are not meant to be engaged. When your gun outranges your chosen target you don't need cover any more than artillery men need bulletproof vests. These vessels are hardly going to serve in a combat zone thick with incoming fire. If the other guy has a 4 inch cannon the CG vessel has had it anyway. From 10 km away.

About the tube lights - when you have an organization as big as the Coast guard - you have a central stock that is standardized with inexpensive locally available material that serves the purpose. LEDs are only now beginning to touch the India market and I think 90% are of Chinese origin and would hardly be found in the spares supply stores of the Coast guard
