what is the thing under the wing between two engines? External fuel tank or some type of radar?

The C-130B-II was distinguished by its false external wing fuel tanks, which were disguised signals intelligence (SIGINT) receiver antennas. These pods were slightly larger than the standard wing tanks found on other C-130Bs. Most aircraft featured a swept blade antenna on the upper fuselage, as well as extra wire antennas between the vertical fin and upper fuselage not found on other C-130s. Radio call numbers on the tail of these aircraft were regularly changed so as to confuse observers and disguise their true mission. wiki

but I see them on many others versions.. so it might just be the external fuel tank

^^The difference between Pvt. Co. PR and DRDO PR capabilities. IIRC there was a shot of the OFB hand-over ceremony and of course it was all smiling SDREs and garlands etc.

Of course the important thing is it works but PR "saxyness" is important. Not from a online d*ck-waving PoV, but for public consumption. As Shiv has been pointing out, the SDRE mentality is "we are boor nation, incapable of creating weapons that work, korrupt, all failures... etc etc" And when you see an OFB PR image, the idea is (unjustifiably) reinforced. However, when you see an image like^^ then the impact is "wow maybe we SDREs can do something right, that looks so TFTA, awesome!"

It's all marketing - but our first audience must be ourselves - the public who doesn't care about these issues, who thinks "pak strong, china strong, India boohoo" and change those perceptions. It will take much more but this is a starting point IMHO...

With glamour also comes confidence. I guess all this DRDO shyness about publicity and pointed focus on keeping their customers happy is what contributes atleast parrtly to our aam abdul Dhoti-shivering and defeatology. One sees a OFB pic and compares with other TFTA pics am sure they would feel OFB maal is inferior

Thanks Marut. Nice article.

Only thing I disliked is the terrible ergonomics for the driver. The vehicle doesnt seem to have power steering and the gear box looks like its from the 50's. I wonder if power steering is purposely excluded from the vehicle to make it more reliable in case of explosion.

These pics were originally in 3472x2244 resolution, I re-sized them to 1600x1059 res. If having problem, kindly let me know I would further de-size them.

Those are jerry cans with water. Even if they are fuel cans should not be a problem per se, they wont damage the vehicle if attacked.

Indian paramilitary soldiers take up position as they proceed towards the villages of Lalgarh, in Midnapore district, some 200 km west of Kolkata, on June 18, 2009. India deployed troops to West Bengal on June 17 to tackle an upsurge in Maoist violence after days of clashes between tribal villagers and police. Thousands of villagers in Lalgarh have ransacked and torched police camps and houses belonging to Marxist leaders.

nice pics of nathula pass

Really awesome!

I noticed that none of the soldiers was carrying visible arms. The general atmosphere, at least in these pics, seemed quite non-hostile.

Gentlemen,
This is Psy-Ops at the borders. Let them be. Why nitpick on it.. I would have prefered a pic from Kargil but whatever works is good..

That's not the point. Its disrespectful to the armies of both the Nations. Do we have dearth of proud military history so that we have to borrow from others? We could easily have displayed the picture of IA soldiers holding Indian flag atop Tiger Hill or thousands of such pictures from our numerous victories. And to think that this image is displayed at a border is the height of foolishness and disrespect.

Agreed!

But yeah, quality PR/marketing is not really what the Indian government is good at generally speaking :(

A lovely picture from Livefist.

Do any other members have pics of IAF/IN aircrafts from similar perspective? If so, I would be highly obliged if they are shared here. Just looking at this pic makes me want to PS a LCA or FGFA flying alongside the aircraft.

How can that be an IL 76. IL has wings starting over its fuselage. Unless someone was trying to pull off a chatt-ride like they do on overloaded buses! :rotfl:
My money is on Boeing 737

Yeah, its confirmed to be 737. I am ashamed to say that I had asked Shiv Aroor in the comment section whether it is Mig-29K or Sea Harrier!!! I am still unable to understand what I was thinking.
In reply, Shiv Aroor incredulously replied that this was taken from a Boeing 737 operated by the IAF Communication Squadron.
