since you guys like the first picture so much...
An Indian security officer, left, stands next to a U.S. Secret Service agent as they stand watch while Marine One helicopter carrying President Barack Obama takes off in Mumbai, India, Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Its the secret service guy who is looking a bit SDRE in that pic with loose fitting pants, casual posture and all..Well, if it was a Indian wearing those loose pants, we would have had tons of comments on it but since its the super-duper Unkil's secret service man wearing it, it is definitely bad-a$$
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Secret service guy is looking quite bored in the pic while the MARCO is looking alert with fists clenched. But seriously, if the positions were reversed, we would have had no end of disparaging comments by now.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
US Secret Service fella is seriously out-badassed in that picture, poor fella looks like a Wall Street Yum Bee Aye doing market deals on his iPhunwa while SDRE MARCOS man looks ready to rip someone's head off (must be the bad US Navy SEAL influence from 2 decades back).

Yes, but, they should not show their face. Also, the equipment.Bala Vignesh wrote:Chacko Chetta, i guess except for the IAF Garuds, no other SF is photographer friendly.
I had some pics. But, I realized that I should destroy it. You know, even it even puts the PRO's job in danger. Its like killing our golden goose. They are so torn with us as guest and his bosses. They cannot yell on us. We need to understand them.
Its best to take their permission at the same time watch their body language.

This ( Link ) is the riskiest photo I clicked. I was standing on INS Beas inside the Naval harbour and took it. If you note carefully, on the bottom sides of the ship, i have masked it and then I sent it for approval.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Strange, why is it masked? if its a "see-crate" just blink an eyechackojoseph wrote:This ( Link ) is the riskiest photo I clicked. I was standing on INS Beas inside the Naval harbour and took it. Was this picture taken in a dry dock? If so, then you might be hiding its hull mounted sonar (if any).

There was much more than what meets the eye. See, it would have give a view of a particular location which has not been seen publicly.
I cannot divulge location where I was standing.
I just wanted to show a A/C being refurbished. It left for Cochin after wards.

STUNNING PIX: Indian Army trains in icy Alaska - Link
Indian Army personnel are taking part in a joint military exercise with their American counterparts involving airborne specialist operations in sub-zero temperatures in Alaska.
The fortnight-long exercise, which began on November 1, has 200 Indian infantrymen carrying out joint operations training, Yudh Abhyas (War Drill), at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richarson with airborne forces of the US Army.

The green beret and maroon beret have different lineages and used differently in different countries.Raja Bose wrote:^^Slight nitpick - US Army Rangers are one of several US Special Operations forces (under ARSOC) but not US Army Special Forces.rohitvats wrote:^^^US Army Special Forces - apart from Rangers Regiment - do not sport Maroon Beret. There is a reason main US Army SF Units is called Green Berets - these fellows wear Green Berets. Their official name is US Army Special Forces Regiment.
1. Commandos, after Boer Commandos, were formed on Churchill’s instructions, to raid German held Europe. They also spearheaded Normandy landings. These troops, formed by amalgamating Royal Marine & British Army battalions, sported Green Berets. They survive today as Royal Marine Commandos.
OT Note – The British Army was never called Royal Army, because it used regiments raised by Colonels or East India Company or similar types, often without a Royal Warrant or Commission.
2. Impressed by the performance of German paratroopers in Belgium at the start of WW2, Churchill wanted a similar unit. General Fredrick Browning formed this unit. His wife, the famous author Daphne du Maurier, suggested the maroon beret for the Parachute Regiment.
3. A totally separate unit was the SAS of David Sterling, that developed more or less independently and used a sand beret.
In light of this, following are the US units -
4. US airborne troops – 82nd, that was the first US parachute division, adopted the British maroon beret. Other units followed this practice
5. US personnel and units that undertook British Commando course were awarded Green Berets on qualification. When SFG were formed, they wanted to continue the tradition. In 1961, JFK authorized the green beret for special forces.
6. Rangers have a different lineage and wear black berets.
All these units fold under US Army Special Operations Command.
Along with USAF, USN and USMC units, they fold under US Special Operations Command
In India, Megh Singh was from Brigade of Guards, and the first commando unit was to be raised under the Brigade of Guards. However, since parachute training was a part of the curriculum, the commando battalions were raised under the Parachute Regiment. Thus 9 & 10 Para Commando follow the lineage of the Parachute Regiment and use the maroon beret. Had they continued in the Brigade of Guards, they might have worn olive green berets with red and yellow plumes.
Do note that –
1. Not all commandos are parachute qualified. The Royal Marine Commando course, the original one, even today, does not include parachute training. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Mari ... ndo_Course
2. Not all parachute qualified infantrymen are commandos.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
The reason is older than that. The Army of the UK came into being following the Act of the Union that merged the Scotland and England into the United Kingdom, which among other things resulted in the merger of the Scottish and English Armies. The English Army before that was maintained by Parliamentary approval, following the Bill of Rights of the late 17th century. Although regiments have the royal title before their names, most of them have not been raised by the Crown, and have rather been placed by sundry colonels and peers at the service of the Crown.OT Note – The British Army was never called Royal Army, because it used regiments raised by Colonels or East India Company or similar types, often without a Royal Warrant or Commission.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
historically, armies in britian were mostly feudal militias who would band together to support the king if their lords deemed it appropriate. the king therefore had to spend a lot of time and money to ensure that the various nobles were kept on-side. given that some nobles were of french/norman descent and others of saxon descent and the former had interests in france as well as england, it made for a complex political landscape that the king had to manage - rarely sure that he had enough support or power to do what he wanted. Only into the time of henry VIII do we see monarch having greater power than the barons
i believe that oliver cromwell's "new model army" first broke this feudal-militia model to create a semi-professional force of citizen volunteers to fight for parliament against the monarchy

I do have a question, slightly OT, but since we are talking of MARCOS, why don't they show their faces? Why aren't they photographer-friendly?
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
because in wartime they are expected to operate behind enemy lines. they have also operated as an undercover force in kashmir.

What is this? No one has yet about the puma bag? Shame on all the members. But more than that, shame on MARCOS. When nearly all the NAVY warships are being built indigenously, they just had to go on and carry a European bag...destroying the track record of IN along the way.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Just came across this Infographics on RIA Novosti. This is a pretty neat way to get newbie's or general readers interested.
http://en.rian.ru/infographics/20101109/161263796.html
Maybe, some of the forum members with mastery over graphics programs could develop some stuff like this for the BR. Regarding researching content, if required, I would be more than willing to help.

I agree. It would be a nice idea. However, I have no knowledge of graphics, so won't be able to help in that regard.
