Those consistently being used for proximal security of Karzai are mostly Blackwater/Xe types, not serving SEAL/other Fort Bragg types. Maybe they once were in Fort Bragg when they were in service, a distinct advantage if they are applying for a Xe job. Serving Fort Bragg types seem to be used for more no-nonsense tasks and are always in demand. Hence this "outsourcing". I remember reading this rather interesting anecdote of the name calling fights amongst these private-militia gentlemen. The men guarding high value khan's proteges like Chelabi, Karzai etc and State Dept types like ex-Administrator, Paul Bremer etc were derisively called "Pretty boys" by those para-mil/privateer types who acts as low grade thugs in the streets of Baghdad and Kabul. A bit of envy at being considered "too ugly to be photographed" is there. Apparently, Chinese Politburo is NOT the only one concerned with prettiness and personal grooming :D

Regarding SPG men, purely IMHO/enthusiast's opinion etc. These gentlemen of the counter-assault are disturbing to say the least. I never expected GoI to come up with such a "yo mama!" response like them against the jihadis. The very first photo that showed lack of helmet, but otherwise heavily protected (including ballistic knee pads) meant one thing - only a head shot is going to make them stop firing at piglets. And professional guys wantonly preparing for that eventuality to protect a national leader is not seen often in a democratic Govt's forces (their white house counterparts in black SUVs seem to wear helmets). Those guys are GoI's challenge to the pakis - you try throwing your crazy low IQ piglets against our leadership, we throw our equally crazy but exceptionally fine boys back. I dont think these guys probably ever care about retirement benefits. One can only envy and salute such men 8)

Lal-saar, they cant afford friendly fire situations where Indian snipers are scanning crowds, hence I believe no helmet, plus the counter-fidayeen mentality above. Khan guys have some invisible infra-red paint on their helmets, but I guess even that is available to jihadis via the paki govt  IIRC, some of the SPG guys (the famous Mithun-da dude) even color their hair in distinct patterns. By now, even we know these handful of men by sight, from various photos and know they are the good guys. Something which seems counter-intuitive in the usually anonymity seeking world of dark arts, which is what got me disturbed in the first place.

I guess when shooting starts, whomever is not familiar to them, but are packing pieces are turned into toast, helmet or not. Best is to lie down in a gubo fashion at the first instance of popping sounds when these guys are around.

vivekmehta, those glasses seem more anti-glare for heavily back lit or reflective inside areas. Again guesses only :)

^^The glasses the SPG guys are wearing are ballistic goggles. They are supposed to protect the eyes from splinters and spent cartridge cases. For more info on ballistic goggles technology check out the following link.

http://www.revisioneyewear.com/technology.html

Oakley is another famous brand.

I doubt if it has anything to do with anti glare functionality as the primary purpose of these glasses.

Any one who has ever been to a shooting range would have worn this especially in USA.

I think it is very likely that the specs are polarisers that filter out the specific lasers (from dazzlers etc) that the SPG guys use. there's no other reason for them to be issued specs as standard.
of course they do use use the earphones, throat mikes etc. check older pics from this thread.

darshhan, I do have a pair of oakleys with filters, dont know if they can stop a anything other than BB pellets? Spent cartridge not sure, but bullet spalls/low speed ricochet off the braking material behind targets etc make them mandatory for civilians due to range safety regulations. Never heard it being mandatory for combat. But then you may be right too :)

Rahul M, good point on lasers, never thought of that :) Heard that the pro tennis players have a filtered contact-lens for contrasting the yellow ball against background clutter. Wonder if there are such reasons too?

Rahul m Ji , Some of the goggles are indeed capable of filtering lasers by blocking specific wavelengths as you said. But apparently they are special lenses and you have to specify such when ordering.Just check my earlier link for revision eyewear.Although I would be very surprised if SPG didn't have top of the line equipment. But primarily these glasses are ballistic goggles which should be capable of protecting the eyes from projectiles having low velocity and small calibers such as splinters. There is an added benefit of eye protection from dust, sand, cold weather etc by default as well.According to some testimonials some of these glasses have also protected eyes from explosive sharpnels.

http://www.esseyepro.com/testimonials.html
“The story behind my ESS goggles is as follows… On 07 April 2003, 1430hrs vic. Baghdad (obj. MOE), our vehicle took a direct hit from an overlooked RPG team to our left flank, destroying our TOW missile launcher and my Bradley commander’s hatch. I was hit in my neck, left shoulder and face with shrapnel, but thanks to my ESS goggles, my eyesight is still intact and no shrapnel penetrated my ESS goggle lenses at all. These goggles still have the shrapnel in the lens! I fought through the shrapnel and continued to bring the fight to the enemy. I believe that if the shrapnel would have hit my eyes that would have taken me and my crew out of a serious and historical fight that helped in the fall of the Saddam regime. Thank You Very Much for your wonderful product! I'm a believer in your product, protecting eyes ONE BATTLE AT A TIME.”

Hnair ji,Oakleys are a very good brand of ballistic goggles so it should be able to stop spent cartridge cases from damaging your eyes. You can also check out Oakley website and note the specifications of the make of your particular goggles. It should clear all the doubts.Any half decent ballistic goggles should be able to stop spent cartridge cases since their velocity is very less.Do not test it by yourself though.Your contributions are very valuable to this forum. :)

darshhan-saar, I brought this particular one based on recommendation from a law enforcement friend and found it to be nice. anecdotes of stopping a bullet or shrap is, well.... it can happen if the stars align and bless the wearer :)

As mentioned before, spent cartridges are not considered a big issue as in shooting ranges in urban areas (close proximity to other fellow shooters in adjacent stalls etc). But not enough when compared to keeping these glasses clear all the time (they are not self cleaning and can fog up if the shooter is running or excited :D ).

Moving on from eye wear topic....

^^ Agreed.Even I would not count on them to protect against bullets and sharpnel. In fact in my opinion protection from dust, sand etc would take higher precedence for any soldier as far as combat effectiveness is concerned.Anything else is a bonus.

So now we have graduated from scooter helmet :(( :(( to why-no-helmet :(( :((

These SPG guys (some of them seem to be the same good fellas from a year back) are counter assault onlee - they are not meant to blend in, they are meant to intimidate. And as for helmets, unlike sooper-dooper assault kamandu types who go in and out like khan mijjile in paki musharraf, these fellas have long stretches of duty when they have to be 400% alert - helmet is heavy, cumbersome, limited use (if they get shot in the head at close quarters not too much can save them) and reduces awareness. Have some trust in them to decide what they need or don't need (same goes for comments on MARCOS pics) - they have everything they need (unlike the NSG :(( :(( ).

Well a Pakistani terrorist trained by ISI with a Chinese copy of an Israeli "shoot around the corner" gun with invisible laser marker and guided by GPS can take these guys out any minute and it would give me more confidence to see our SPG like Arnold Schwarzenegger in that movie. I will fill the name of the movie in later - but you know what I mean. Why can't we learn from the real experts? 8) 8) :rotfl:

SPG gets freebies from different vendors as a marketing ploy. The idea is to get the SPG to adopt their product as the standard arms, and then leverage it for much bigger and profitable sales to other forces (like NSG, military spec ops forces, regular officers, police forces, etc). It is a win-win for both sides as long as it runs honestly.

Could be. But the equipment in the pictures (including the earlier ones) appears too standardized for such a possibility.

SPG like all similar units has a team of people to do evaluation - do you seriously think they are going to equip themselves with one-off freebies on duty  Any equipment inducted has the whole nine yards of spares, maintainance etc. all set up with the approved vendor after evaluation. Equipment under evaluation is not given out during deployment as it can lead to disastrous consequences (especially when you are guarding the fat cats). I doubt such sadak-chaap habit of using small arms/equipment freebies on deployment is done anywhere in the world except the super-dooper Pureland SSG.

There are two Rustom's. Rustom-I and Rustom-H. The image you posted is that of Rustom-H.
Take a look at this:

I've seen such Sumo vehicles a lot in J&K, mostly in VVIP cavalcades. Except for the antennas, they are unmarked.

During CWG, Nagaland police looked really cool, fit and alert compared to Dilli police which seems lazy. Not an ounce of fat or slouching by these people. Females looked particularly awesome with their SLR rifles and uniforms. INSAS should've been better though IMHO onlee

I don't have enough resolution on my phone to confirm whether it is a Uzi or not, but Uzis have long been in limited service with the Paras. Please see BR picture gallery for a 10 Para(?) unit where a Carl Gustav operator is also carrying a Uzi as backup.

As for SPG and freebies, I take my post back. I keep forgetting how large a force the SPG is

It may very well be, but I notice a vertical forward grip, just behind the silencer. IMVHO, Uzi doesn't have one. Please do correct if I am wrong

As far as i Know its Army SF operators that rotate through RR units that carry Tavors.. RR units on their own dont have TAVORs. Army SF operates in Kashmir as stand Alone units as well as elements of RR Cdo units.
