Folks - a lot of the media photographs of the stone throwers in the valley, show only one particular aspect of this - essentially, to show up the Indian forces in a bad light - you see this battle being fought on social networking sites, blogs and in media too.

It is perhaps important to collect in one place a set of photographs that show how brutally aggressive these stone throwers from the valley really are - the URL below does some of this. So, I would recommend that if you have good photographs that show the murderous side of these stone throwers - please post links and other references. If we end up with a good set of links and photo sources - we can encourage editors to start publishing some of these.

4 dead, 35 injured as mob attacks police station in Kashmir

Four civilians were on Sunday killed and 35 others injured when a mob set a police station on fire, where explosives were stored, triggering a massive blast in Khrew area on outskirts of Srinagar city.

The violent resistance is certainly due to instigation from outside India. But Indian government particularly CRPF should show a lot of restraint at this level. There should not be any blood path in JK Even there should be some positive measures to bring in trust among the people in Kashmir needs to be made. India should also move some more army near the border and make intrusion into Pakistan so that the focus shifts and infilteration is also reduced. the present government should show some interest in addressing the problem a bit more seriously. They should pass a resolution in Parliament about the state assembly giving a bit more share of local taxes. A symbolic return ofa few army would also help in bringing some positive atmosphere. But government should make sure that there is a peaceful dialogue with various groups about what in reality possible and what is not possible for JK should be held.

This is a very Palestinian tactic. Throw stones in a procession, have kids to do that, generate bad press for the security forces, and sympathy and monetary gains for the orchestrators. Too bad, DDM is falling for it hook, line and sinker.

I was talking to a Kashmiri Hindu friend who visited Srinagar recently. Apparently these stone throwers were given compensation based on what they attack. Separate prices for breaking a glass, hitting a police/CRPF officer and so on.

Central Govt must support Omar Abdullah to take the sponsors of these stone-pelting organization. Can they do it?

Why not just arrest the instigators after hours and fine them.

What more restraint do you want the security forces to show?

Violent mobs have attacked police stations and police housing camps, assaulted police officials, burnt police vehicles and residence of adminstrators, vehicles plying on the highways have been attacked, weapons have been looted, fire tenders which are rushing to put out fire set by these hooligans have been attacked and burnt and yet you want security forces to show restraint.

What is meaning of restraint for you? Should mobs be allowed to attack, loot and kill.

How about these people who are aiming a rock at police man's head?
Should restraint be shown and these people allowed to murder him?
Image

And why not preach your restraint to stone throwers association on facebook, wonder whether they will listen to your preachings or digitally stone you, my guess is the latter.

J&K has 1% of india's population and yet receives 10%-12% of all grants given by GoI, that's more than any other state. If that's not enough how much more do you propose to give?

And what about other states, should we also stone our policemen and ask for more funds from centre. Is that the way you want people to behave?

It's very important that we seperate the bad apples, innocent non-participants should not be killed (even inadvertently) , however those pigs to pelt stones and burn state infrastructure should not be spared either. I have negative sympathy for those who were killed in police firing if they were involved in activities such as triggering blasts in police camps. They deserve their Jhannun.

Police firing is an active deterrent against throwing stones and damaging property, only when these paid pigs realize that their lives are at stake will they realize not to damage public property.

I think unless we're going to go and solve the problem across the border we should get used to this. No matter what we do, they are not going to want to be part of India. This is just maintaining status quo.

Btw, why does J&K get the special treatment of GOI grants and not Nagaland or Manipur? They're also insurgency hit. Maybe this money is better invested in those areas.

Certainly lethal force should not be used, but I think retaliatory action on kids who were actually throwing stones is good. Broken bones and their parents will learn to keep the kids home.

This is an old pic from 5 months ago but shows the real situation, security personnel have to face daily for the past 6 months, murderous mobs attacking them with anything that they can lay their hands on, from stones, sticks to guns and bombs. Riots are being engineered at the drop of a hat, even issues not connected to kashmir are used as cover to begin riots, the recent turkish flotilla episode was also used to begin riots.

Rioters are throwing petrol bomb at security personnel
If he wanted he could have used the AK hanging by his side and shot dead the assailant but he is only using his hands to defend himself.
What better example is there for restraint? The rioter can live another day while the security personnel has glass shards and burnt flesh in his body.
Image

Original Link from daylife site
http://www.daylife.com/photo/02716B83bJ ... mir+petrol

And the media also doesnt help when they insert typical half-turths into newsreports and photo captions

Calling rioters as "stone throwers' or "young Kashmiri Muslim protesters".
Why is age, religion, ethnicity or type of weapon used to attack policeman being used to describe rioters? How about calling rioters as rioters?

Calling state of jammu and kashmir as "Indian adminstered Kashmir".
Most of these lines are inserted by news agencies like reuters and AP whose news reports are dutifully copied by some indian newspapers without correcting them.

Calling Jammu and Kashmir police as "Indian police".
There is no such thing as Indian police, each state has its own police force and yet the photo captions typically carry this "Indian police" tag. "Indian police patrol kasmir", "Indian police face stone throwers", "Indian police this, Indian police that".

Calling well armed and trained attackers as "suspected militants" or "rebels", these words are even used to describe attacks by pakistanis citizens. No mention that these are pakistanis, most of them from punjab province using kashmir as their ruse to get jannat tickets.

And finally if some people still believe there is a need for more restraint from the end of security forces, how about creating your own restraint force and going to j&k to face the violent mobs, when stones and petrol bombs rain on your head the world will see what restraint you show.

Fully agree with your sentiment but some bullets fired have inadvertently hit onlookers, in one incident a woman looking out of her window was hit, sad that this happened.

Sonia on J&K: Elements with ulterior motives instigating attacks

New Delhi: Expressing pain over the upsurge in violence in Kashmir, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has said the state government should give a push to development to address the situation besides bringing to book elements who are "instigating" unrest in the valley.

Gandhi, whose party is a coalition partner in the Omar Abdullah government, said, "We are pained by the upsurge in violence in Jammu and Kashmir recently. My deepest condolence to those innocent men and women who were killed in this mindless violence."

In a message to party cadres in the Congress mouthpiece 'Sandesh', she said, "I understand there are elements with ulterior motives that were instigating these attacks. These elements must be identified and brought to book."

At the same time, she said there should be a continued push on the development agenda. "Ultimately development, which creates jobs and livelihood opportunities, is the key instrument against terrorism and violence.

Special Operations Group (SOG) are back in the thick of action according to some pro-TSP rags like Kshmir watch. considering the amount of bad press they are getting from TSP they must be doing a heck of a job out on the streets.

Just saw some of the snaps (most of them cannot be accessed from office). Especially the one in which a r****l is throwing a stone from the back of a policeman who seems to have fallen down and is trying to get up. Did you notice the poor soul's protective gear? :(
1. A helmet which offers no protection to the back of the head
2. No protective vest, no shin guard, no elbow guard, no shield and guess the lathi is also lost.

How can any sensible govt. allow their police forces to do any riot control duty with such pathetic equipment? And these are equipments which are readily available. For example see the riot gear of a Kerala Police constable. There was even a better snap which shows the elbow guard etc. I feel the various J&K Governments perpetually keep their police force ill equipped and frusturated. The police force totally frusturated and demotivated would do some excess, and this would be shown as police brutality/police excess.

The sad comment was in today's Hindu where a policeman is mentioning about how many of the injured are maimed for life and the fact that they have to live among these same rioters which makes things even tough since they are seen as "agents of government" and boycotted. The poor JKP constables/officers are getting f$#%^@ from all sides.

Now that Rajmata has made her stand clear, i would expect the SoG and assorted hit squads in plain clothes to start roaming the streets very soon and start bumping off the ringleaders. Expect lots of snatch and grabs in certain localities also if the patience of Delhi is tested any longer

There is one guy in the first pic which Avinash has posted that does not look Indian. Looks Somali or Ethiopian/Eritrean to be precise. Is there another shot of the guy in the red-checked shirt? Could be SDRE but still, the bone structure of the head piques my curiosity. Could be the photo. Would be nice if there was another pic of the guy... there's only another legshot that I noticed.

The abdullah's went to the last elections seeking votes in the farook's name and the CM candidate projected was farook not omar.

yuvaraj insisted after the elections that omar be made CM. farook grudgingly made way and landed up in the Union cabinet as compensation.

yuvaraj and his merry gang seem very very quiet these days!

Hope this is true, and that this new "get tough" policy is implemented asap:

Stern steps on table, Delhi backs Omar
New Delhi, Aug. 2: Harder measures, including an unannounced shoot-at-sight regime, are in the works for Kashmir.

“The situation is close to anarchic, it has to be quickly taken in hand, that is the immediate bottom-line,” a top government source told The Telegraph today as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held a war-room meeting with Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah and members of the cabinet committee on security (CCS).

A role for the army is not on the table yet but it could be called in if the current eruption refuses to ebb. “More central forces are being flown and the army is always on standby in the Valley,” the source added. “The forces will no longer fire only in self-defence, they will fire at every violation of curfew, they will fire at any threat to public property or supply lines.”

From http://www.telegraphindia.com/1100803/jsp/nation/story_12763767.jsp
Srinagar, Aug. 2: Mosque loudspeakers crackled across Kashmir today, blaring not a call to prayer but a call for rebellion.

The shrines turned protest pulpits overnight in a throwback to the early 1990s when the governor of the day, Jagmohan, had dubbed them “centre of revolution (sic)”.

The trigger for the return to a tactic used 20 years ago was the death of eight civilians in clashes with security forces yesterday, the bloodiest day of the seven-week unrest that started in the second week of June.

.....If the streets were on fire, mosques appeared to rekindle a familiar spark.

A police officer who had been on duty in Srinagar in 1990 highlighted the parallels between the events then and now. “People know the power of mosques. They had used it with perfection during Jagmohan’s stint as governor and they tried to repeat it today.”

Mosques, the officer said, serve two purposes for protesters. “It amplifies their call. The slogans coming from mosques make one feel as if the entire population has joined the protests. It frustrates the government. Plus, they (the people) feel safe, thinking they are protesting peacefully inside and will not be harmed by the police.”

Jagmohan mentioned several incidents in his book, My Frozen Turbulence in Kashmir. “The subversives used mosques extensively for rearing, nursing and fanning their activities. In fact, one of the instructions was to make mosques centre of revolution (sic).”

History was repeating itself today as scores of mosques reverberated with azaadi songs, and pro-freedom and anti-India slogans. Thousands, including the elderly and children, flocked to such mosques. Some went even at night.

......The authorities aren’t unaware of the trouble that can be fomented from mosques, and Jagmohan’s “centre of revolution” phrase is on their mind. That could explain why they have not permitted prayer gatherings in some mosques. That includes the Jamia Masjid, Kashmir’s main mosque, where Friday prayers have not been allowed for five weeks now.

.....Officials said reinforcements were rushed to such spots before dawn to enforce the curfew, but many mosques, mostly on the city outskirts, continued to draw protesters.

Indian media has proved itself utterly disgraceful. All the headers consist of 8 Killed or 5 killed in JK and hide the 200 CRPF injuries somewhere inside the article. Why can't they write "Stone Pelting in JK - 200 CRPF casualties, 8 dead"

This is a bad situation and govt needs to act fairly quickly avoiding mistakes made in yesteryears.
It will be good if J&K is handed over to Army and all these mosques be locked up and imams and muftis be arrested sent to Kotbalwal in Jammu for good thrashing.
Let Ikhwan be revived and SOG be given more powers.

Tasers should be used. It would help in arresting people.

Wooden sticks for "lathi charge" are not sufficient. We need iron rods.

Unfortunately, this has taken a religious bent - not only are mosques fully involved now - but, also according to a journalist friend of mine - maulvis are approaching the J&K cops and asking them to take a religious stand (and some seem to be doing so).

Even tasers are not fully safe, the 3 deaths in canada attest to that.
