The person who argued about giving away Tawang and building up Indian opinion through opinion-makers is as well known as M.K. Bhadrakumar who wrote the above article.
Is it the "bhishma pitamaha" KS himself? :?: :?: :?:

Well the truth regardless of the propaganda will be out sooner or later!

Here is what MKB's interpretation of the PRC-Myanmar connection
The recent developments in Myanmar show that not only have the Indian “experts” been completely off the mark in assuming that Yangon was about to become a Chinese pearl, China may actually be caught in a tangled web. Not only does Beijing lack the stranglehold over Myanmar, as our experts blithely believed, but the issue is more about how Beijing could easily extricate itself from supporting the isolated regime in Yangon. We are seeing a curious spectacle of Yangon taking full advantage of Beijing's predicament.
And here is the other side of the story

Myanmar's Neighbors Advance Pipeline Project
When completed, the pipeline will help unlock large untapped deposits of natural gas off Myanmar's coast and carry it hundreds of miles to southern China, expanding Myanmar's role as one of Asia's important energy exporters and enhancing its influence over other countries that rely on its supplies.

The project also is expected to include a port that can take deliveries of oil from the Middle East and Africa before transferring them to China. That will give China a new route for oil that bypasses the congested Strait of Malacca near Singapore, which handles a large portion of China's imported crude today.

The project is an important part of China's wider strategy to diversify energy sources and reduce its reliance on supplies that could be blocked easily by foreign powers or pirates.
The significance of this should be obvious to any one who even has a passing interest in these matters.

Utter crap.SL has a few Chinese origin vessels,Isralei missile craft and have in recent times bought Indian OPVs,therefore if any foreign sailors were on board it could be to check on eqpt.We have a number of Russian origin vessels and subs in the IN and if a few Russians are on board to check on eqpt. it does not mean that India has become a Russian satellite! Secondly,Rajapakse has done Indiaa nd the globe a signal favour by eliminating the LTT,NOT the "Tamils".

The Chinese are building the Hambantota Port becuase we in India rejected the offer made to us first and are paying the price for it.There is not a single project in Lanka,or edifice of lasting significance when compared with what China has given the island, like the BMICH international convention centre, the Supreme Court, etc.Though we have given aid, there is not a single major building built with Indian aid.The Hill Country needs good medical facilities and with lakhs of Indian tea workers, the least we could've done was to have built a good hospital in the hills. The symbolism with such gifts is that buildings last for centuries and remind the locals of the generosity of the nation that was the giver.

Myopic midgets in the MEA have been responsible for untold damage to our interests abroad by their indifference and moronic mindset. The Indo-Lankan defence agreement which has been pending for years is another! So who is to blame really? MKB has a point, though criticising Indian diplomacy, but is off course when he says that China has little influence in Burma. How do you think that they have acquired NoKo help for their nuclear reactor and weapon plants allegedly being built underground and in tunnels? The NoKo N-proliferation industry has a Chinese godfather that coordinates such international proliferation.

Philip ji,

I have a doubt about this Hambantota port in SL. It also applies to Gwadar port as well, although very tangentially and to far lesser extent.

Does Chinese paying their money to develop infrastructure in SL and Baluchistan actually mean that the port will be a Chinese base? I mean, just because they are building it, does not necessarily mean that they will station their combat-ships at those port.. GOI and IN won't allow the govt of SL to allow this.

I understand your soft-power part and what India should have done vis-a-vis SL to further polish her image. But, how much of it will actually result in Hambantota becoming a Chinese naval base? If this is the case with few pearls in the string which Cheen is trying to put around Bhaarat, how potent is this in terms of mid-term threat and nuisance value? IOW, how much weight does the theory of "String of Pearls" actually hold?

I understand position in Gwadar is different. Also position in Myanmar might be a bit in favour of China, although India too has a stake over there. Given the increasing clout of India, I don't think it will be easy to operationalize the "String of Pearls" for China. Yes, it increases the perception of threat and forces India to modernize her assets. But, apart from this, I don't understand any other importance of this string theory..

The Chinese think like Indians far ahead .Time is relative.Having a facility for commercial use first, say at H'tota, built by it,could at some future time evolve into something more, especially during a crisis. The Chinese are swarming all over Africa to strip it of its wealth and require safety for their merchant fleet carrying it home.A "string of pearls" is most welcome .Right now,China is sending three naval warships to the pirate infested seas of Somalia to protect its merchant fleet. It will definitely increase that number in yars to come, justifying its permanent presence in the IOR,as the US is also doing.Again, authoritarian anti-democratic states and military dictatorships like China,NoKo and Burma need each other. They need to bond togather to prevent the democratic western forces from detablising them.If the Burmese govt. had to choose between supporting China or India, whom would they support? China is also a stronger military power (in numbers) both iconventionally and nuclear, though our conventional forces are arguably superior in operational capability.

When the fruit is ripe it will fall from the tree.China is carefully nurturing fruit trees in foreign lands, waiting for the fruit to fall,or to be plucked.

Chiron,

Philip is right - a lot of this is building the political and physical infrastructure for the future.

- The Chinese want to be able to secure their energy/metals/etc imports from Africa and the Middle East.

- They desperately want access to the IOR that bypasses the Straits of Malacca through countries like Pakistan and Myanmar, although Pakistan is looking like a very bad bet.

- Overland access from the Western PRC to the IOR is seen as vital to 'Opening up the West' (as in Tibet and Uyghur areas). The idea is that the development of these areas through trade access will not only contribute to the PRC's overall economy, but so decisively change the local demographics and tie them forever to China.

All things considered, I doubt if PRC would play games with SL. Firstly there is the cultural unfaimiliarity/mistrust. Then these SL guys by now know PRC is too far away to rescue them if India really starts playing dirty games. We have done so and they have lost 30 years + lots of lives thanks to that...they will never forget that lesson particularly because 64bit version 2.0 of the game can be launched any time....

I do agree that PRC is more focused on opening up west to secure western regions. They dont need much beyond the Stalinist cabal in India itself to keep India down, even if TSP card fails.

I agree with MKB that a lot of the noise, particularly in toilet papers and tabloids are complete nonsense. But when he says PRC cannot supply hi-tech weapons to TSP, he is being economical with the truth. Perhaps he is correct because nukes are fairly low tech. He is also, to be kind, wrong in assuming that just because tabloids are wrong, all of India should go back to sleep and not worry about PRC's moves.

Paper visa’ row: India holds back China-bound J&K academic

Officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi prevented a prominent Kashmiri academic from boarding a flight to Beijing on Saturday night, refusing to recognise his Chinese visa.

The visa was not stamped on his passport, but had been issued on a separate piece of paper.

: China on Tuesday accused the Dalai Lama of seeking to undermine Beijing's relationship with Delhi through a visit to a disputed border region, insulating India's government from direct Chinese wrath over the dispute.

The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader has riled Beijing by arranging a trip next week to Arunachal Pradesh, parts of which China claims as its own. The Chinese government has condemned the trip several times and asked Delhi to stop it going ahead.

But with ties between the two Asian giants strained by a flare-up of disputes over their shared boundary, Beijing apparently hopes to keep its ire over the trip, due to start November 8, from inflaming diplomatic tensions.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu repeated earlier criticism of the Dalai Lama for "separatist" activities, but did not condemn Delhi for allowing the trip to go ahead, and underlined the importance Beijing places on Sino-Indian ties.

Blame for tensions, Ma said, rested with the Dalai Lama.
"The Dalai Lama often lies and often engages in acts to sabotage China's relations with other countries," Ma told a regular news briefing, when asked about the trip.

"I am confident that his scheme to wreck China's relations with the relevant country will come to nothing."

China claims about 90,000 sq km (55,900 square miles) of Arunachal Pradesh along the border as part of its territory, that it sees as "southern" Tibet.

Ma said that late last month, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh had agreed to focus on promoting "healthy and stable relations."

"We hope that each side will continue striving to make strides in that direction," Ma added.

But in a reminder of the many sources of friction between the two as they chase economic growth and jostle for influence in Asia, Ma also said China had asked India to ease visa red tape after new regulations upset Chinese firms.

Delhi recently cut back on business visas to curb a flow of unskilled labour, much of it Chinese.

Many Chinese workers had travelled to India on multiple entry business visas to fill jobs in sectors ranging from power generation to telecoms, the official China Daily said on Tuesday.

These visas will now be restricted to a smaller pool of senior executives, trade consultants and other specialists, affecting an estimated 25,000 Chinese workers, the paper added.

"China has expressed its concerns to India many times," Ma said, adding that Chinese businesses were involved in building projects in India that helped economic ties.

They tried their utmost to use local labour, but also needed to bring in technicians from China, he said.

Updated on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, 19:32 IST

New Delhi: Notwithstanding Chinese objection to the Dalai Lama's proposed visit to Arunachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu on Wednesday said the Tibetan spiritual leader will be accorded the honour of 'state guest' during his week-long tour beginning November 7.

Khandu said the Dalai will be given all protocol, including a tight security cover, when he arrives.

"He will be accorded with the honour of state guest. He will visit Tawang, Itanagar and some other places," Khandu said. ……………………

China concerned over India's employment visa policy
Beijing, Nov 3 (PTI) With some 25,000 of its citizens hit by India's new employment visa regime, China today voiced serious concern over the policy asking New Delhi to be "considerate of the circumstances" of Chinese businesses and workers in the country's power, telecom and petroleum sectors.

China's Ministry of Commerce expressed its deep concern over the new policy after it received many complaints from Chinese companies in India, the state-run 'China Daily' reported.

"We hope India will be considerate of the circumstances of Chinese firms there and provide more convenience for Chinese labourers and firms," the paper quoted an unnamed official with the Ministry of Commerce as saying.

The visa policy, issued in mid-July, mainly affects expatriates working in India on a business visa, which previously had been allowed for a wider range of occupations and employees, the paper noted.

Professor Shakeel Ahmad Romshoo, of the department of Geology and Geophysics at the university, said: “I was stopped by Immigration officials at the airport though I had the visa issued by the Chinese embassy. They did not let me go on that visa.”

The Chinese embassy staples a visa in a separate sheet to applicants from Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh. To the people of all other Indian states, it pastes the document on the passport as is the norm. The Indian government, meanwhile, does not accept the stapled visa as valid, sources said.

Remote sensing confirms China building dam

The National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) confirmed on Tuesday that construction was on at the Zangmu site on the Chinese side of the Brahmaputra river, prompting the government to take up the matter with China at a “political” level.

In its presentation to the Committee of Secretaries (CoS) formed to assess Chinese plans regarding possible diversion of the Brahmaputra’s water, the NRSA presented evidence of “houses, construction/excavation, and movement of trucks” in and around a 3-4 km range at the site.

...
It’s learnt that the Zangmu hydroelectrical project was inaugurated on March 16 this year and the first concrete was poured on April 2. The 1.138-billion Yuan (1 Yuan = $0.15) project has been awarded to a five-company consortium with China Gezhouba Group along with NIDR (China Water Northeastern investigation, design and research) involved in its construction.

Arunachal Pradesh moots supplementary force to aid army

The strategic northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, large parts of which China claims, hopes to raise a 5,000-strong force comprising local people to supplement the efforts of the Indian Army during war or war like situations, says its governor. "It will be an indigenous force modelled after the Ladakh Scouts. It will be an advantage to the defence forces in case of emergencies," Governor JJ Singh, a former Indian Army chief, revealed.

"The force will be around 5,000-strong. The Ladakh Scouts had helped us immensely during the (1999) Kargil war (with Pakistan) and the proposed force will be of similar help," Singh said, adding that during war or war-like situations, the force can "help the army in understanding the local language, intricate nuances of geography and other details." The governor, who is here to attend the ongoing Singapore International Water Week, was optimistic of getting the central government’s nod to raise the new force.

"We are in talks with the defence ministry and the response is really positive so far. Though they will be in the Ladakh Scouts’ grade, they will get their salary from the Central government. The army will take care of the training. The people of the state are really looking forward to it as it will generate employment for them," Singh said. The Indian Army’s Ladakh Scouts are a 4,000-man force largely made up of local Buddhists. Nicknamed the ‘Snow Tigers’ they are one of the Army’s most decorated units, with more than 300 gallantry awards to their credit.

Singh said that as an army officer, he had seen first hand the benefits of such a force and now, as the governor of Arunachal Pradesh, he would like to replicate the force in the State. Earlier this month, IANS had reported that India was ramping up its military deployment along the border with China in Arunachal Pradesh, positioning two army divisions, each comprising around 25,000 to 30,000 personnel, as also a squadron of frontline Sukhoi Su-30 MKI combat jets at a key airbase in the northeast. "To develop India’s capability to effectively meet the future security challenges, deployment of more troops along the India-China border is necessary," Singh had told reporters in the Arunachal Pradesh capital Itanagar. He said two army divisions, each comprising around 25,000 to 30,000 personnel, along with artillery, medical, signals and engineering support, would be positioned along the border.

"The exercise would be completed in a phased manner in the next few years along with development of roads and other infrastructure along the borders," Singh said. "Increase of the force level, and improvement of weapons, fighting platforms, intelligence acquiring and other equipment are aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the Army troopers to effectively meet any sort of challenges," he added. This apart, an initial squadron of four Su-30MKIs have become operational at the Tezpur air base in Asom. This will be gradually raised to 18-20 aircraft. The Tezpur base is within striking distance of the Chinese border along Arunachal Pradesh. Beijing had in 2003 given up its territorial claim over the Indian state of Sikkim but was still holding on to its old stand that a vast stretch of Arunachal Pradesh belongs to them. The India-China border along Arunachal Pradesh is marked by the McMahon Line, a notional border which is now known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC). India and China fought a bitter border war in 1962, with Chinese troops advancing deep into Arunachal Pradesh and inflicting heavy casualties on Indian troops.

China is not our friend

It seems to me that there are two-and-a-half types of people who say that we should always try to accommodate China. The first are the uncompromising peaceniks. For them, it is their manifest fancy — and hence, the Almighty’s desire — that Asia’s two largest nations live together in never-ending friendship, happiness and peace. This lot doesn’t care much about facts.

The second bunch of Hindi-Chini bhai bhai fellows are what I call the “Chindia chaps”. Typically, these are Indians who have been to Beijing and Shanghai, and even to places like Chongqing and Xian, more than once — often as guests of Chinese institutions or international bodies organising conferences in China. They have attended workshops, written papers and interacted with Chinese academic counterparts. And they seriously believe in their portmanteau construct called Chindia...

Let’s have no doubt about a few things. China will always support Pakistan, come hail or high water. It will sooner or later start damming the Tsangpo (which becomes the Brahmaputra in India) and the Sutlej. My unlettered guess is that the work is about to start, or has just started — especially across the Sutlej. It will continue to make strident claims on Arunachal Pradesh. It will significantly strengthen its capabilities to move troops, artillery and other fire-power along its borders with India — both across Ladakh, Himachal and Uttaranchal in the west and Arunachal in the east. It will incessantly complain about the Dalai Lama if he visits border areas. It will never allow India a hope in hell of a permanent UN Security Council seat. And block any move that gives India a greater role in today’s league of nations.

IMO India should completely restrict chinese workers in India and instead encourage other ASEAN contries to do similar projects. They too have the technical/operational wherewithall to execute telecon, pertroleam and infrastructure projects.

No nation in the world will accept a visa on a sepalate paper. Visas have to be in the passport and our beloved kashmiri-brofessar must know that first. Lizard is insulting the kashmiri-professor's indian passport and this moron is complaining about the immigration process.

I cannot imagine such an insecurity to a country that boasts as a new Super Power. It does not possess even the power of surf detergent.

Chinese Army begins exercises north of Arunachal Pradesh
To a poser on intrusion by Chinese troops in the neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh state, Major General S S Jog, General Office Commanding of the Red Horn Division, said: “There is some sort of exercises, which they generally do during this particular time of the year. They have done a few exercises and certain amounts of troops have come in but its normal routine exercise.”
So .................................. there you have it. Peace on the border is normal.

Singha: I had posted in the Indian Army Discussion on the new troops strength scenario in NE. It is something like this:

III Corps - HQ Dimapur
a. 2 Mountain Division - Dinjan (Upper Assam). Transferred from IV Corps
b. 57 Mountain Division - Leimakhong (Nagaland)
c. 56 Mountain Division - Jukhama (Nagaland). This is one of the new formations raised.

IV Corps - HQ Tejpur
a. 5 Mountain Division - Bomdilla. For Tawang Tract. The Korea Bde is part of this formation
b. 21 Mountain Division - Rangiya, Lower Assam
c. 55 Mountain Division - Shillong. New Formation.

Given the urgency, IA can easily milk 18 Infantry Battalions + support equipment from its other formations to bring these new Divisions to strength immediately. IA will be raising new formations to compensate for these new divisions.

Overall, the NE will have 6 Divisions readily available with two Corps plus the 23rd based in Ranchi available on call.

If you could manufacture items in your own home, why would you go to a store and buy the same items that are manufactured in China. India should seriously look into investing in disruptive technologies that could break the backbone of China's manufacturing sector. Here is an example:

From http://www.space.com/businesstechnology ... cator.html
Space explorers have yet to get their hands on the replicator of "Star Trek" to create anything they might require. But NASA has developed a technology that could enable lunar colonists to carry out on-site manufacturing on the moon, or allow future astronauts to create critical spare parts during the long trip to Mars.

The method, called electron beam freeform fabrication (EBF3), uses an electron beam to melt metals and build objects layer by layer. Such an approach already promises to cut manufacturing costs for the aerospace industry, and could pioneer development of new materials. It has also thrilled astronauts on the International Space Station by dangling the possibility of designing new tools or objects, researchers said.
The technology has been used in computer chip production for a while now and is mature. There is potential to use this technology to literally produce anything given a raw material feed. This is a real technology not science fiction and the way I look at it will break the backbone of Chinese manufacturing sector if everyone could have a replicator running closeby.

Design something, upload the design into the replicator and the replicator will produce it for you given the raw material. No need to import it from China. This is not a joke, I hope that people will think about strategic implications of this technology. All that is needed is to invest into maturing this technology and that is where the Indian government should step in.

Jay Leno’s 3D Printer Replaces Rusty Old Parts
Jay Leno has a lot of old cars with a lot of obsolete parts. When he needs to replace these parts, he skips the error-prone machinist and goes to his rapid prototyping 3D printer. Simply scan, print and repeat.

So, rather than have a machinist try to copy the heater and then build it, we decided to redesign the original using our NextEngine 3D scanner and Dimension 3D printer. These incredible devices allow you to make the form you need to create almost any part. The scanner can measure about 50,000 points per second at a density of 160,000 dots per inch (dpi) to create a highly detailed digital model. The 3D printer makes an exact copy of a part in plastic, which we then send out to create a mold. Some machines can even make a replacement part in cobalt-chrome with the direct laser sintering process. Just feed a plastic wire—for a steel part you use metal wire—into the appropriate laser cutter.

Inside the printer, the print head goes back and forth, back and forth, putting on layer after layer of plastic to form a 3D part. If there are any irregularities in the originals, you can remove them using software. Once the model is finished, any excess support material between moving parts is dissolved in a water-based solution. Complexity doesn’t matter, but the size of the object does determine the length of the process. Making a little part might take 5 hours. The White’s feedwater heater required 33 hours.

The tiger in front; India and China.(Asia's emerging giants)

Economist (US), The, March, 2005
It is good that India is starting to see China less as a threat than as an inspiration

WERE it not for two things, India's economic performance would seem remarkable. Since beginning to dismantle the "licence raj" and open up to the global economy in 1991, the country has achieved average annual economic growth of about 6%. The proportion of people living below the poverty line, one-half in 1978, fell to one-quarter by 2000. Since 1991, average GDP per head, adjusted for purchasing power, has doubled. India, its finance minister, Palaniappan Chidambaram, felt able to boast in his budget speech on February 28th, "is not a poor country." "Yet," he went on, "a significant proportion of our people are poor." That is one of the things thwarting self-congratulation:...

>> 55 Mountain Division - Shillong. New Formation.

imho there is little armed threat from BD side - the state police and BSF are enough. Shillong given its hilly terrain no doubt is good for a regimental training center but the bulk of the
division imo should be cited someplace north of the brahmaputra in assam like tezpur or
north lakhimpur for easier access. or the rangiya camps near guwahati can be further extended - it sits on railway line and permits easy movement by train and air.
