Does secularism mean that we need to have a distributed naming system for weapons according to religion and that a percentage should be reserved for religious sentiment who might feel left out unless included?

That is actually pseudosecularism or pretend secularism for the simple reason that Sanskrit names are being interpreted as "Hindu names". But its is also OT for this thread. If we call a missile "Fire" would you think it is Christian?

Sorry Rakesh didn't get time to log in until now, work only! But Marut did a better job than I could have, the guy explained whole thing so simply that even laymen would understand that too without making any technical error or DDM

For non-malayalees, Ariyunda= Ari + unda. Ari means Rice and Unda means ball. Ariyunda is used as pun sometimes.

Gagan wrote:Daman is indeed "Domination"

Arihant = Destroyer of enemies.
Aridaman = Dominator over the enemies

nice.

Gagan , a minor correction. Daman means Crushing. Aridaman means one who Crushes the Enemy. one of the names of Vishnu. Same meaning as Ripudaman.

Ari and Ripu share same Dhaatu by have slightly different connotations.

No, that is not what I meant. OT, please pardon me.
Quota system would be good :rotfl: Esp increased quota for the front-line troops :)

I did not mean to say that Sanskrit was Hindu, it isn't. I am asking why not INS Kirpan/INS Akbar/INS Dawson (vis-a-vis Vikramaditya) as Chacko mentioned a few posts ago..

Kirpan is Sanskrit too.

Akbar would probably be confused with the Paki vessels

Dawson? Why Dawson? After Rose Dawson of the Titanic?

Though Mahabharata is enough for our needs. But adventurous folks can try with medieval names , from sultanate, slave dynasty etc and could see its impact on PNS.

We can have news like

INS Allauddin destroyed PNS Alamgir

INS Balban destroyed PNS Zulfiqar

P-Sec Brigade and genetically economic experts would be happy.

I like Arihant and Aridaman - both have an understated but menacing tone to them, as befitting a boomer. I much prefer weapon systems being named after weapons, actions, victorious battlefields, hostile intentions and the kind, not people or places. The latter is better suited to the civilian domain. The Arihant class will likely all hold names with the 'Ari' prefix.

Please stop this discussion. Else some wise politician / babu will immediately demand a quota !!

30% of the ship names must be of some scheduled caste ONLY
20% of the ship names must be of some scheduled tribe ONLY
30% of the ship names must be of some other "backward" caste ONLY
10% of the ship names must be ....
30%
Balance 2.6553737% would be from general quota

CHEERS !!!!

Yantra
Our naval ships are not named after people. If you want to see a 'secular' distribution see the CG's FPV for variety.

still better - Dhrishtadyumna... :) by the time they pronounce it, a person could swim, reach tarrel boomer, plant a bomb like james bond and come back..

regarding ari series, here are few suggestions.

Arinjaya (one who is victorious against enemies)
Aribhanjan (fragmenter of enemies)
AriBhakshak (Consumer of enemies)

first you said how can we be secular if we don't use christian/muslim/jewish names, now you are admitting there is nothing inherently hindu about sanskrit. so what exactly is your point sir ?

Incidentally the original question was:
However, I have a question. In our 'secular' country, why do we not have Sikh, Muslim, Christian or Jewish names for our weapon systems/platforms?

The names are all secular, but the question suggests that the names are unsecular due to the absence of "Sikh, Muslim, Christian or Jewish names". For a person like me - it throws up a gold mine of piskological analysis of how existing secular names have been interpreted as unsecular because of the absence of names than can be branded as "Sikh, Muslim, Christian or Jewish names". That indicates that diagnosis of religion is being based on names. A shiv can therefore never be Christian. And Rakesh is out. What about Sonia, I wonder. :D

Apart from the fact that Zoroastrian names and Jain and Buddhist names have been left out of the list. Why don't we drop the subject and delete all related posts. It is just too tempting to tear open the original question...it is a GUBO ready query.

IMO, it should me a muslim sounding name. Takes the wind out of Pakis right to such names. A muslim named Nuke Sub will also alter the way how muslim world looks at India. We do have a large population. Its purely psycohlogical. IMO.

^^^Chakoji, no need for any change of perception. We are Indians and we don't have to change their perception and dont' need it by having certain names. It's stupidity at its best. I dont see any Arabs naming their ships with Indian names to change their perception in the world. And we don't see the Arabs as our enemies because they don't name their ships with Indian names. So let's leave this useless discussion on naming ships with religious views. And for psychology, There are many better ways. One can be instead of naming our aircraft carriers with Viraat, Vishaal kind of names, it can be INS Vikramaditya, INS Chola, INS Akbar (No religion here, but the name of kings of secular India). Anyway the Hind attack helicopters are called Akbar in India. So is that changed any perception of India among muslims? Now among the people of the Arab world, India is viewed with respect (Not talking about the ones with Pakiness. They will never change whatever you do).
And by they way if the second sub is Aridaman, then the third can be Aridahan (burning the enemies) :D
Edited later: Rather than INS Chola, the title seems even better like, it can be INS Raja Raja (King of kings) from Raja Raja Chola. So INS Vikramaditya, INS Raja Raja, INS Akbar etc will be very nice to see sailing in international waters.
