Aridanta, Aricinta, Arighna, Arimardan, Arimdama, Arimejaya, Arinandana, Arinipata, Arinuta, ..

^It seems we are cranking out these nuke subs at a good rate, while the conventional subs are lagging behind. What gives? The costs also seem comparable (scorpene). I think we would be better served by making more nuke attack subs than going after another line of SSKs.

Well this is Naming Cycle-II.

Why can't we have names like babur, Balban, Shahjehan, Jehangir, Akbar, Humayun, Iltutamish, Khilzi etc. Lets have some reservation/quota sota for naming convention also.

We do have conventional submarine program running though it is lagging behind because resources were diverted for Building first three of the set of six Ari Class.

Sindhurakshak accident may spur Navy to give a hard look at speeding up building conventional subs.

Arun,yes.Unfortunately,HSL hasn't established a second line facility for N-subs,which should be done.We need to simultaneously build both SSBNs and SSN/SSGNs.There is also the other key component of the N-reactor and integrating capabilities.HSL may be constrained for space. Pvt. yards should also be brought into the picture for sub building.We simply cannot depend upon only MDL for building conventional subs.The track record is dismal.Even if the goal is the old number 0f 24 subs,there is going to be so much work for sub. yards in building new subs,maintenance and refits ,upgrades,etc.,that both DPSU and pvt. yards will have enough work.
L&T have the capability.In the "F" mag,the Russian sub bureaus visited Pipapav and L&T and said that L&T had better engineering skills and resources.L&T's new shipyard at N/Madras would be perfect given that the Kalpakkam N-plant which makes the N-reactors is close by.

However,an N-sub requires a much larger crew and human resources are essential.There was one report that in this dept. we are not too badly off,as we seem to have a large crops of submariners without the required number of subs.But smaller,cheaper,diesel/AIP subs will be needed for the shallow water littoral IOR ops.The cost of non-AIP Scorpenes are exorbitant.A second AIP batch would make then as expensive as an N-boat! We need to build in large number a cost-effective conventional sub,perhaps in two variants,with and without B/Mos for both anti-sub and land attack ops in the littorals.A separate plug/section for VLS silos could be inserted as exists with the modular design in the Amur/Lada class,touted as being even cheper than Kilos.

Outlook has an article calling for secular names (instead of the currently communal ones) for Nuclear sub. It is a puke worthy article but for comic relief there is this pic captioned INS Arihant at sea :mrgreen:

Anujan,
What an article. The existence of such a shallow mindset is truly unfathomable. Next time India should take permission from Pakistan before deciding a name for our weapons. Or how about a global contest.

<Sarc On>
The navy should name our first real boomer, the follow on to the Arihant class, "Amitabha: An infinite ocean of compassion." Since India's dearest enemies are suffering under totalitarian regimes, perhaps INS Amitabha would compassionately provide deliverance from them."
<Sarc off>

Sorry for polluting the Arihant thread.

I have gotta to say, that we should delink such articles here, and perhaps start a new thread or the ddm thread for these stupid idiots.

And, for the time being, maybe we could shift the Name suggestions from this thread to that link.
Secular names only though.
I suggested INS Abdul.

It is a delta class sub that some random Abdul from DDM has picked up and renamed as Arihant :rotfl:

L&T's facilities and expertise should not go waste, it should be engaged to build more diesel-electric subs on the same SSN chassis it is doing now. Building this kind of expertise and pool of technical personnel is very difficult in the present Indian dollar-crunch scenario, this situation may not present itself again. India should make it's goal to indigenously build whatever type of equipment China builds inhouse. All bread & butter essentials should be made inhouse, there shouldn't be any fooling around in this dept, China builds diesel-electric subs romeo & ming so should India. It builds it's own DSRV, so should India ...

habal ji,

most conventional subs are about 1/3rd to 2/3rd of Arihant in terms of displacement. In the sub 3000 ton range. The hull will perforce be different.

I do however admit that sometimes I fantasize about a big diesel electric subs. One that is not designed to go far but is designed to fire big K-5 sized missiles (2-3 missiles each). This would be a unique engineering feet but worth it, I guess.

Has anyone noticed, that why Sanskrit name article is titled INS Cheruman..it's as close to INS Abdul one can get.

Cheraman Juma Masjid in Kerala

Cheraman converted to Islam, swore allegiance to Mecca etc etc. Now is that not a secular name.. :D

There are two things which are happening here.
One is the entire generation which have been indoctrinated with leftism and marxism have no clue on India

This article is to create controversy and fake debate on this topic. Check how the author brings up Pakistan when it is not relevant
Need to ignore the article and stop

Acharya Ji, cannot ignore. These are being published in the MSM, the only option is to counter it. What is astounding is he is proposing to name an IN vessel INS Cheruman, after the 1st South Indian King who converted to Islam and went to Mecca. That is Cherumans claim to fame! Sharma calls Arihant communal and an IN vessel named after the first Islamic convert as Secular. This is bonkers of the highest caliber!

SaiK, please can you clarify more, why he names the farticle INS Cheraman. It will ascertain why some people want INS Arihant to be named INS Dalit or INS Abdul Cheraman or whatever. Thanks

This fellow has taken the naming jokes or piskology here very seriously and made an issue out of non issue. But he has no guts to suggest the names suggested here. he has cleverly chosen a name that would cause cognitive dissonance among Indians while getting as close as possible to being Sickular without inviting wrath of Bharatiyas.

I never thought this would appear in MSM.

^^ Thats the state we are in today. The country that is the birthplace of sanskrit has to tiptoe around its own heritage, while Indonesia can print a currency note with a Ganeshji on it or name its airline Garuda..while Thailand can have a Samudra Manthan tableaux at its airport.
People like this Sharma are mental midgets & totally deracinated. And Ajai Shukla even tom tommed this article. Leftist thought does some weird stuff to the brain.
