GSLV D3 Launch Failure

Postby disha » 15 Apr 2010 12:42

GSLV D3 Countdown is a major event. India is flying its Cryogenic upper stage for the first time and this "manthan" has almost been 2 decades in making since initiated. This is a major event hence it deserves its own attention. Though it is upto mods to see it fit.

To start of on GSLV D3

ISRO GSLV D3 Page

GSLV D3 and GSAT 4 PDF

Note the GSAT 4 has four ion thrusters, 2 Indian and 2 Russian. It is in itself a major milestone.

And some images:

1. Note the vented interstage between the first and the second stage: http://isro.org/gslv-d3/Imagegallery/launchvehicle.aspx#0
2. Staking of the cryogenic stage: http://isro.org/gslv-d3/Imagegallery/launchvehicle.aspx#4
3. GSAT 4 with the payload fairing:http://isro.org/gslv-d3/Imagegallery/satellite.aspx#2

A gung-ho article on GSLV D3 from Al-Jazeera

From the above:

"For the first time we are testing the cryogenic engine and stage in the flight. It has to perform well. Only when we achieve it then I can say, India has done it, the sixth country in the world to have this complex cryogenic engine technology," Dr K Radhakrishnan, chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), said prior to the launch.

Reuters 1 min. news reel on GSLV D3 launch

Note the error made in the above news reel.

Meanwhile GSLV D3 coverage by Xinhua

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/sci/2010-03/24/c_13222777.htm

According to the above CDDM, Israel is a past master in cryogenic technology!

It depends. For GSLV Mk I, the liquid strap-ons are fired some 4.6 seconds before launch, their thrust checked by computer and then the solid motor is ignited. If there is a shortfall, the launch is aborted. For the first launch it took ISRO 2-3 days (do not recollect) where it swapped the strap-ons and relaunched. So the launch window is "strechable" based on the ground conditions and weather permitting. I do not think ISRO will take chances with GSLV vis-a-vis weather (while they launched PSLV in rainy conditions)

Would be interesting to know , if they will go ahead and launch in the dark @ night time ,,,in case of a few hours delay/hold...

Shiv's video of 1st GSLV launch. Note how the LSBs are fired at T-4.6 sec and the first stage at T.

What do you expect from a third rate toilet paper tabloid? The only one that covers technology / space decently is unfortunately Beijing puppet Stalinist yellow daily...India badly needs quality daily...

having followed ISRO's long journey towards desi cryogenics tech, through the blow of sanctions, the mid 90's spy scandal and thereafter trickle down snippets of a success here and a partial success there, I hope that this personal wait, along with that of many other Indians ends today. I wish the GSLV team all success.

Both the lines have deviated. It seems the cryo stage is not performing well.
