I liked the headline in the report from BBC. This should warm the hearts of those who are posting positive news about Pakistan in this forum. I can now see investors queuing up to fork out billions on developing Sindh's vast coal reserves!
Pakistan government defaults on its electricity bill
Government institutions in Pakistan owe $2bn to the cash-strapped national power company, it has emerged.

Power Production Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf told parliament that the defaulters included the army, the Supreme Court and the presidency.

Pakistan is currently going through a major power crisis which has slowed down the economy and led to riots.

The latest disclosures will embarrass the government which has threatened to jail people who do not pay their bills.

HOUSTON, July 7: Raja Zahid Akhter Khanzada: The president Indian Supreme Court Bar Association (ISCBA), the chairman Kashmir Committee and a member of Rajeya Sabha Ram Jethmalani disclosed Tuesday Kashmir issue could have been long resolved peacefully if General Musharrf, the then Pakistani President, would remain in power for a little longer, Geo news reported.Judiciary has no power to meddle with constitution legislated by a parliament, he observed.
He was talking to Jang/Geo news here in Houston city of Texas after attending a convention hosted by Sindhi Association of North America (SANA) on Tuesday. Pervez Musharraf was at brink of resolving Kashmir issue practically before being destabilized by political turmoil in Pakistan, sending automatically the matter in limbo again, he revealed. He said, “It is no longer a secret now that president Musharraf sent us a document carrying acceptable recommendations and proposals for solution of Kashmir Issue for two sides.” “Subsequently, I myself, worked on those proposals being chairman of Kashmir Committee, made slight changes and produced them before mass representatives”, he said adding, “but time did not permit Musharraf

Prove our role in 26/11: Prof. Hafeez Sayeed
Describing suicide attacks in Pakistan as “illegal,” the JUD chief demanded public execution of suicide attackers in the country.
Public execution of 'suicide attackers' ? They would be already dead, Professor saheb, and that is why they are called suicide attackers.

More seriously, Professor saheb is worried about the increasing clout of the Punjabi Taliban and decreasing clout of his own organization, among the masses.

ISLAMABAD: A row over the opening of Chashma-Jhelum (CJ) link canal took a new turn on Wednesday when Sindh’s member and the federal member of the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) decided to resign in protest against the move. According to sources, Sindh’s member Mohammed Khan Memon and federal member Bashir Ahmed Dahr may submit their resignations on Thursday.
Mr Memon was advised to issue a notice to all Irsa members and register the protest against what the Sindh government terms an ‘illegal decision’ of the Punjab member and call a meeting of the authority to discuss the issue in detail. The authority said the filling in Mangla was still deficient and might remain below full conservation level which could severely affect the next Rabi wheat targets. Accordingly, it was considered more feasible to augment the supplies at Trimmu through the CJ link canal as Tarbela reservoir was having 42 per cent more storage than last year, it said.
It said the link canals were operated as part of the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 to manage the Indus Basin as an integrated entity as envisaged in the Water Apportionment Accord of 1991. Also, Clause 14(d) of the accord provided freedom to the provinces to modify system-wise, as well as period-wise, uses within their allocations, it said.

Gas loadshedding
Gas loadshedding continues for the eleventh consecutive week, affecting CNG stations and industrial units. 380 CNG stations of Faisalabad, Chiniot, Jhang and adjoining cities have shut down due to shortage of gas.

400 industrial units, including textile factories, have also closed down in the Faisalabad region, causing losses worth millions of rupees to the owners. SNGPL officials claim gas loadshedding will continue for another month and formal notices have been issued in this regard.

Bhutto family is indeed cursed! Benazir's son took on the looks of his mother, and both her daughters are 100% pure Zardari! Looks like the one of the left is responsible for half of Pakistan's food crisis!

Zardari's nth China visit
Zardari responded by saying, “It is our belief that Pakistan can act as a force multiplier for China and we will continue to work towards this end.”
It is very clear what he means by Pakistan being 'China's Force Multiplier'. Obviously, deeper and taller strategic linkages are being worked out.

Afghanistan & Pakistan to discuss India transit trade facilities
Transit facility for Indian goods through Pakistan to Afghanistan, through Wahga road link, is a major part of the negotiations under proposed Afghan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA) and this issue would be further discussed in next two weeks . . . He {the Finance Minister of Afghanistan} said that Pakistan side has agreed to allow Afghan trucks to enter in to Pakistan and transport their cargo to Karachi and Wahga and also to carry goods in transit to Afghanistan from Karachi and Wahga.
However, another report says
According to sources, the Afghan side termed transit facility for transportation of Indian goods to Afghanistan through Wahga border as most important issue during the negotiations. However, Pakistani authorities have not accepted this proposal to allow transit facility to Indian goods to Afghanistan through Wahga border.

Punjab Govt inaction against terrorists irks GHQ
Pakistan Muslim League-N has earned itself a new and very powerful adversary thanks to its inaction against the ‘Punjabi Taliban’ -- the Pakistan Army.

It is now evident that the Punjab government led by the PML-N and the army, which is spearheading counter-terrorism operations, are on a warpath.

At a recent meeting at the General Headquarters (GHQ), senior intelligence officers conveyed their serious concern to the Punjab government over its failure to act against terrorists based in the province on the basis of information provided to it.
So, the battle lines are drawn and clear. It is the Punjabi Taliban & the Punjab Government Vs. LeT & PA. At the same time, the Punjab Government has been quite benign with LeT as well. It allowed Professor saheb to escape any detention. It has allowed LeT to pursue its activities without let or hindrance. It has even paid it ~80 million PNR to buy peace. After all, LeT's HQ is in the Punjab and it has sizeable following (still) and so it cannot be antagonized too. However, PML-N has recognized the growing clout of the Punjabi Taliban, however much they may hate that expression.

Pakistanis do not even hesitate to deny their part in their biggest accomplishment, the creation of Pakistan, and blame Congress for this, and this theory gathers more and more supporters as the people see their condition becoming increasingly unbearable.

If we couple this with the army being told to prepare for a two front war, this obviously has important implications for India's security. Earlier Pakistan and China had informal case-to-case basis military joint ops against India.

This also shows that India had intel regarding such a plan and the armed forces were asked to draw up plans to counter this. I have this feeling that the last couple of years, GoI has loosened its budget strings as far as defense preparedness is concerned. But MoD continues to play havoc with its glacial pace of moving files and pondering over deals causing immense delays.

But more importantly what will India do to Pakistan if it enters into any such deal? If it brings about a less magnimous and more realist approach towards pakistan, that'll be really good.

Waise china implementing any such deal in reality is very unlikely. Pakistan represents an economic black hole that is a somewhat unreliable strategic partner.

Sharad Pawar on the resumption of bilateral matches cricket matches:

"Immediate ties between both countries is not possible. It is not in the hands of the Cricket Boards. It is a diplomatic issue. This is a decision taken by the Indian government. We are only administrators. If needed, I will let the experts take a call (on the issue)."

Read it all: No Indo-Pak cricket ties soon: Pawar

That flatly contradicts the News article which quotes an anonymous source that in return for nobbling Howard, Pawar had agreed to a resumption of bilateral matches leading to bestowing here on BRF oracular wisdom to a particular postor and some hand wringing simultaneously  :

Pakistan denies Afghanistan transit for Indian trucks
Updated at: 0736 PST, Thursday, July 08, 2010
Pakistan denies Afghanistan transit for Indian trucks ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Wednesday has denied Afghanistan the transit for Indian trucks, which means that there still exist conflicts on trade agreement through border of two neighboring countries, Geo news reported.

Finance Ministry sources told Geo news the signing ceremony of Pak-Afghan transit trade draft has been postponed till the seventh round of the talks, giving rise to speculations that there have appeared the definite disagreements between two countries on some issues.

Afghanistan put forward a proposal of bilateral trade through providing transit to open trucks from India en-route Pakistan but owing to security reasons, Pakistani officials have denied transit to Indian trucks, sources said.

Pakistan has also refused to an Afghan proposal involving India-Afg trade through Pakistani airports, sources maintained.

I know logic has no place in the scheme of things when it comes to TSP but isn't fruit juice usually cheaper than cat food?
Well you have to think of Pakistani cats, not western cats...

Still in denial.

Foreign powers behind terrorism: DG ISI

“The foreign powers are involved in terrorism and destabilization of the country,” said DG ISI.

During a briefing in the National Security Committee session headed by Senator Raza Rabbani, DG ISI Ahmed Shuja Pasha said that the western powers are involved in the terror activities of the country.

Hotel owner killed because he was 'Pakthoon'...first time to my recollection, target killing gives reason for killing. Normally it is left to reader to guess - perhaps they presume just being a Paki is wajib-ul-qatl.

In Karachi, there is strong competition between the Mohajir-based MQM and the Taliban-supported Pushtun groups.

The MQM - Pashtun hate relationship goes back to the earliest days of the launch of MQM in Karachi. The massacre let loose by the Pashtuns on the mohajirs in 1986 is likened by many next only to genocide in Dhaka by the PA.

Pak-India series likely next year
It is good that Pawar came out with this statement. But it can still be reconciled with Butt statement of resuming ties " as soon as possible" with Pawar's statement of it "immediate...not possible". He leaves it to GOI , prudently. He knows that MMS would soon pitch for it.
