X Posted from the ISI History & Discussions thread.

Amrullah Saleh, the former head of Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security (NSD), clearly recognises the malign role of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan via its intelligence agencies in supporting the Islamic Terrorism being perpetrated by the Afghan Taliban in Afghanistan.

His comments before an audience at the Jamestown Foundation:

He questioned those skeptical of the Taliban's strength. "Will they be able to threaten our key and national interest by possessing AK-47s? Remember, when they helped Al Qaeda do 9/11, they had the same weapons." His solution? "DDR" the Taliban. "Demobilize them, disarm them, take their headquarters out of the Pakistani Intelligence basements... Push the Taliban to play according to the script of democracy—and if they win...allow them a chance to govern." He's confident, though, that "they will die in democracy, they will die in a country where law is ruling, not guns, not IEDs, not the spread of fear and intimidation."

Saleh also has a pretty good idea of where to change the narrative of the war: Pakistan. Since 9/11, he says, Pakistan has provided only "retail" and not "wholesale" cooperation. Time after time, the United States has been duped into trusting the country and its intelligence services. Saleh even claimed that Pakistani officials have privately admitted to him that their country has yet to change its ways despite their frequent promises to do so. "Now the United States believes that by giving more money and resources to Pakistan, you can convert their behavior from bad to good…but it is rewarding bad behavior which [continues] that bad behavior."

Pervez Musharraf is Benazir Bhutto's killer: PPP http://www.zeenews.com/news673886.html
Lahore: Ruling Pakistan People's Party general secretary Jahangir Badar on Saturday alleged that former President Pervez Musharraf was the "killer" of former premier and party chairperson Benazir Bhutto.

Badar made the remarks while talking to reporters on the sidelines of an exhibition of photographs of Bhutto, who was killed in a gun-and-bomb attack in Rawalpindi in December 2007.

PPP spokesperson Fauzia Wahab was also present at the event. Replying to a question, Badar said many people were arrested in the course of the investigation into Bhutto's murder and "many more would be arrested soon."

Wahab said Bhutto's assassination was "not a routine murder" as it was a conspiracy.

Bhutto's killers would be arrested soon, she said.

Musharraf, who has been living in self-exile in Britain since last year, has said he was not in any way responsible for Bhutto's death.

X Posted from the Pakistani Role in Global Terrorism thread.

The US National Intelligence Estimates, prepared by their Director of National Intelligence says :

……………… the war cannot be won unless Pakistan is willing to obliterate terrorist safe havens in its lawless tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.

The new report on Pakistan concludes that the Pakistani government and military "are not willing to do that," says one U.S. official briefed on the analysis.

The document says Pakistan's government pays lip service to cooperating with U.S. efforts against the militants, and still secretly backs the Taliban as a way of hedging its bets in order to influence Afghanistan after a U.S. departure from the region. …………………

The NYT's latest report says he is in critical condition. No matter how bad he is for India, lets wish the poor guy well at a personal level.

Looked at it from a purely "Amercian exceptionalism" POV, i.e., American interests reign supreme and others' like SDRE's are subordinate, the most noxious manifestation of such an obsession being that taking on puny Al Queda is of such a higher calling that anybody who professes to take them on like TSP, is morally justified in using terror as an instrument of state policy against India; operating through such perverted paradigms, nobody can disagree that Holbrooke's diplomatic career has been outstanding, the high point being his bludgeoning the Serbs into submission while their cousins, the mighty Russian just stoody by and watched.

Something is fishy.

Regarding BB's murder, there should be a flurry of cables reporting back that the ISI and the military top brass was conspiring to finish her off. And this decision was informed to the other generals at the Army core commanders confrenece that was held immediately prior to her meeting the sun roof lever. Post BB meeting her 72, there should be cables telling the people back in DC that the fauj donnit.

Now where are these hain ji?

Holborke has got an Aortic Dissection. This is seriously seriously bad ass.

Don't know if he'll survive, chances are VERY slim indeed.

But one thing is sure, he is not going to return to his job of Af-Pak special envoy. Time to look at other alternatives.

Remember that these are mere "secret" cables. As I noted earlier, the "Top Secret" material uses a different, more secure network. I'd expect all the "big ticket" items like the post-9/11 Amritraj threats, Kunduz airlift, KSM arrest, BB assassination, 26/11 - Headley stuff etc. to never show up anywhere in the Wikileaked documents.

George Washington University Hospital is the same hospital that Ronald Regan was taken to after a bullet in his lungs in March 1981.

Richard Holbroke might make it after all, but it is still too early to say when or if.

The deputy viceroy of Pakistan is going to be out of action for a while, and I suppose someone will have to quickly replace him, otherwise the generals in pindi might try and slip in some mischief in his absence.

Sweden calls Stockholm blasts "terrorist attack"
By Mia Shanley and Patrick Lannin

STOCKHOLM | Sat Dec 11, 2010 9:57pm EST

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Two blasts rocked the center of Stockholm Saturday night in what Sweden's foreign minister called "a terrorist attack," killing one person and wounding two.

The blasts Saturday took place after Swedish news agency TT said it received a threatening letter about Sweden's military presence in Afghanistan and a years-old case of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad.

Asked if a man found dead at the site of the second blast blew himself up in some way, police spokesman Kjell Lindgren said: "It is possible."

The incident began when a car burst into flames in the city center, followed by explosions from within the car which the police said were caused by gas canisters.

Another explosion took place, in which the man died, about 300 meters (yards) away. Two people were wounded in that blast.

"Most worrying attempt at terrorist attack in crowded part of central Stockholm. Failed - but could have been truly catastrophic," Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said in a message on Twitter, which was also shown on his blog.

OK now serious news: Video news from TOI
2 Pak boats captured off Gujarat coast

Well apparently the two boats were on a Recce mission. They were out in the sea for atleast two weeks, but surprise surprise their fish holds were empty. Looks like they were looking for something other than fish.

They are being questioned by Naval Intelligence.

Gagan, it could also be a countermeasure, meaning get the attention of the Navy, and while they are engaged, continue the real hanky panky. This tactic was used by TSP to brutal effect in Kashmir. They would let go off a low intensity bomb, and when the good guys, our security forces converge at the scene, a real massive bomb goes off, killing scores of our boys.

Pakistan must change its policies: Angela Merkel
German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday accused Pakistan of trying to solve political issues in the guise of terrorism, and stated that Pakistan will have to change its policies.

In a join press conference with visiting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Merkel said that it will be made clear to Pakistan that terror is not a means to an end when it comes to solving political problems.

Merkel said that India was suffering from the affects of the 26/11 terrorist in Mumbai and that Germany would continue to support India in battling militancy.

In general when docs use the term "critical" it means that there is a life threatening problem that could end in death. In the case of a dissecting aortic aneurysm this could mean a stroke or even an unconscious state where he is not responding or possibly kidney failure or worse. The condition is a deadly serious one.

In the “Enligtened Moderate” Islamic Republic of Pakistan a doctor is charged with blasphemy for throwing in the waste basket a visiting card that had the name Mohammad printed on it.

The doctor of course belongs to the minority and by virtue of that fact the “less pure” Ismaili sect of Islam:

Pakistan arrests doctor for blasphemy: police

(AFP) – 3 hours ago

KARACHI — A doctor has been arrested for insulting the Prophet Mohammed in Pakistan, police said on Sunday, in a second high profile case throwing the spotlight on the country's controversial anti-blasphemy laws.

Naushad Valiyani was detained on Friday following a complaint by a medical representative who visited the doctor in the city of Hyderabad.

"The arrest was made after the complainant told the police that Valiyani threw his business card, which had his full name, Muhammad Faizan, in a dustbin during a visit to his clinic," regional police chief Mushtaq Shah told AFP.

"Faizan accused Valiyani of committing blasphemy and asked police to register a case against the doctor."

Shah said the issue had been resolved after Valiyani, a member of Pakistan's Ismaili community, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, apologised but local religious leaders intervened and pressed for action. …………….

Terrorism in Pakistan linked to Afghanistan, India: Musharraf :rotfl:

LONDON: Former president Pervez Musharraf said on Sunday that the chain of terrorism in Pakistan is linked to India and Afghanistan.

In an article written in Wall Street Journal, Musharraf said that the curriculum in religious schools must be changed to curb terrorism. He also urged proper partaking of Pakhtuns in the Kabul government to ensure a stable Afghanistan because historically, Pakhtuns have always ruled in Afghanistan.

Musharraf said that the triumph in the Afghan jihad was due to Pakistan’s efforts but the West had taken advantage of that.

He also added that he had advised the international community to accept the Taliban government but by not doing so, a huge blunder had been made.

Looks like Jalebi madam is writing his speeches or perhaps he is also relying on ISPR handouts to increase his awareness of world affairs
