The Changing Pakistan Army Officer Corps
The Pakistan Army elicits many concerns about terrorism, nuclear and the coherence of the state. However, very little is actually known about this institution. This article mobilizes unique data to address one important facet: the Army’s geographical recruitment base. We find that the Pakistan Army has been successful at expanding the geographical recruitment base while some groups (namely those who are native to Sindh) remain highly under-represented. We also find that the officer corps is increasingly coming from urban areas. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of these important shifts subject to the limitations of our data.

Dr. Ejaz does write sensible stuff sometimes. Todays Daily Times:
WASHINGTON DIARY: The self-centred beggar —Dr Manzur Ejaz
The Chinese know what the world is saying and are afraid to run into an embarrassing position if the US decides to bring its case against Pakistan harbouring terrorists to the UN. This is the reason that they told Mr Gilani:

One: Pakistan should normalise its relations with India, the US and the rest of the world. The Chinese were telling Pakistan that it is awfully lonely and cannot be supported just by Beijing if the rest of the world stands against it.

Two: the Chinese subtly chided Pakistan for not eliminating the madrassa networks that are producing terrorists. Privately, China has been asking Pakistan to take action against jihadi nurseries but this time they went public on this point.

Three: the Chinese told Gilani that the situation in Afghanistan is improving

Okay guys, I give up - this thread moves fast and there is lots of quality analysis.

BTW, another attack in Peshawar. Entire police station flattened with a suicide car bomber. And onlee 2 constables dead. In Army Cantt.

Of course the run rate will climb rapidly.

Now coming to Karachi PNS attack.,

I think it is brown on brown.,

1. The "bad" jehadists (all pak armywallahs incl. ISI are confirmed jehadists)., were mating nuke to the Onion.
2. The "good" jehadists saw it as an opportunity to capture those maal. Since they were aware of what was going.

The question is more about what we do not know rather than what we know.

Meanwhile, this comment on the website sums up Ms. Kiss-a-dream Fart:

pgbhat wrote:'New kind of militant' behind Pakistan Karachi attack
They appeared to be going for the barracks housing the Chinese engineers. Another firefight broke out until another detachment of naval marines got to the Chinese barracks. The militants, when they realised what was happening, opened fire on the armoured vehicles the Chinese engineers were being taken away in.
Officials dismiss the explanation that the attack was in retaliation for Osama Bin Laden's death. "This took months of planning - the only parallel I can think of is Mumbai (Bombay)," one said.
1. The attackers knew about Chineese engineers and they went for them.
2. SSGN knew they were after Chineese engineers and tried to or reached the barracks first.
3. The Onions (the latest) were the first to be destroyed.

Were they Iranians?

The odd thing is TTP claiming credit. Maybe they were subcontracted. Or a TSP marine commandos faction in league with TTP did this damage.

We are not looking at US silence or ignoring in media.

This is OT, and my last post on this subject but I have been hanging around BRF for donkey's years. I do not indulge in flame wars with bacha log. If you are 70 years or older, then you are my contemporary. If not you are my son, grandson, bacha log or young man. You should not address your elders in this manner it is against Bharatiya culture, and furthermore tell me to to go to BENIS - the wicked humor will give me a heart attack for sure, and my sons and grandsons will hold you responsible.

Saar "ack thoo" is hardly BRF origiinal. However I was among the first to popularize it (but not the first to use it on BRF - I copied someone else) . I have heard it being used colloquially in India. "Thoo" is common "Hack thoo" is meant to be particularly insulting.

"Cashmere" is neither Indian nor BRF. It is just an outdated spelling for Cashmere.

Word Origin & History

cashmere
1684, old spelling of Kashmir, Himalayan kingdom where wool was obtained from long-haired goats. The name is from Skt. Kashypamara "land of Kashyap," said to be the name of a renowned sage. As a name for this kind of woolen fabric, favored for shawls, etc., or for the shawls themselves, it is attested from 1822.

Ms Fair has turned native. She is no longer unbiased, though tries hard. To me that is a compelling and irresistible subject for piskological analysis.

The easy thing to do is to sink into college student level piskology and say that Ms. Fair has found in Pakistan the love she always yearned for, but something tells me that this "anal-lysis" may not be adequate. Or accurate.

However for one to "turn native" - one has to be able to see eye to eye with the natives, and to see eye to eye with natives, the natives must accept you in the first place. For natives to accept you - you have to come across as very sympathetic and sound genuine. It is very easy at that stage to fall into an obligation trap where you find yourself obliged to be slightly biased, both out of gratitude and in the fear of breaking friendships and spoiling memories of good times that she must undoubtedly have been treated to in an indisputably hospitable Pakistan. Whether this involved mohabbat or not is moot.

To be totally objective - one has to avoid these difficult to avoid pitfalls. Perhaps Ms. Fair does not want to break Paki friendships and sees a future for herself with deep access to Paki entities, and perhaps that is why she writes from a Pakistan viewpoint.

The title of her article is piskologically interesting "Try and see it my way" (I am a white woman, not Pakistani so you might change your views if I speak up for them)

Military formation: One injured sailor told an official that the attackers "moved and dressed like us". The militants moved in tactical military formation and spoke in military parlance. They spoke between themselves in Urdu, as well as a foreign language.
Foreign language = Bengali? Could the attackers have been from Mr.Brandy's team of Indian consulate in Afg?

My view of her was completely sealed after her behavior on the Timesnow channel discussion regarding "American help to rogue Pakis" where she showed her complete arrogance and hatred for any Indian viewpoint.

I dont know what to make of that article -- whether it is legit or whether it is an attempt to shore up Ech and Dee. What we do know is that Chinese engineers were held hostage (China confirmed this as per NYTimes). Going by their past behavior (vis a vis Lal Masjid), I wouldnt be surprised if the attacking yahoos were given safe passage in exchange for not harming the Chinese technicians and a story of "the attackers were awesomely trained" story was planted to save H&D.

One more possibility is that (remember the WikiPee story of Unkil having 3000 Afghans trained by Unkil's special forces and CIA to raid for Al-Keeda yahoos in Afghanistan?) this has an Unkil hand (if the attackers were really that good).

PNS Mehran attack: Nationality of 4 terrorists identified
KARACHI: Four terrorists killed during PNS Mehran operation had been identified in terms of their nationality as 3 among them were Uzbek and one was Afghan national.

The post mortem reports of the dead terrorists have been completed and samples of DNA test have been handed over to police. Bodies of terrorists have been shifted to Edhi mortuary.

Abdul Sattar Edhi told that they would be buried in Edhi graveyard. The identification of two bodies became possible while the bodies of remaining two are torn into pieces.

The officer who attempted to negotiate with the attackers said that the two spoke Urdu clearly and from their accent they appeared to be locals.

More discussion on who were the attackers?

http://www.pakobserver.net/detailnews.asp?id=94010
Who is behind Naval Base attack?
Sajjad Shaukat

On May 23, this year, six terrorists who were equipped with heavy weapons attacked Pakistan Navy’s airbase, PNS Mehran in Karachi. They also destroyed two P-3C Orion aircraft, detonating explosives at the naval base. Afterwards, an intense gunfight broke out between the attackers and the security forces including naval commandos. But after 16 hours, the PNS Mehran base was cleared from the terrorists. Spokesman Navy said that 10 security personnel were martyred in the operation, while four terrorists were killed, and two escaped. It is mentionable that unlike the past wars, being fought between two sovereign state actors, in the present era, non-state actors employ lethal weapons such as suicide attacks, bomb blasts, targeted killings and similar other tactics of guerilla warfare which can be more harmful in damaging the interest of a target-country. As part of the new warfare, these tactics are being employed by the foreign elements inside Pakistan.

In this connection, Pakistan has become special target of the new warfare being waged by external powers such as the US, India and Israel  through their secret agencies like CIA, RAW and Mossad :(( which have also availed the services of foreigners and some Pakistani nationals :(( in order to conduct subversive acts in Pakistan. In this regard, although terrorist events such as suicide attacks, bomb blasts and targeted killings have been conducted by these foreign elements intermittently in the last 10 years, yet such incidents have accelerated in the two years. In this respect, more than 30 people had been killed when an explosive loaded car exploded near the main gate of a sensitive agency in Faisalabad. According to reports, the occupants of the vehicle parked it near a barrier erected in front of the main gate of the office and left it. On March 9 this year, more than 35 people were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up at funeral prayers in Peshawar.

As regards Karachi, in the past few months, a fresh wave of violence sparked by the killings of several political activists has swept the city with the terror-events of targeted killings, burning of vehicles and firings between two groups. Especially, on April 28, 2011, a blast had hit a bus carrying Pakistani navy officials in Karachi, killing five people, while that blast occurred two days after two other navy buses were attacked in the city, killing four people. Similar wave of terrorism continues in other form in Balochistan, particularly targeting the Punjabis. If we witness the previous terrorist attacks, we can easily analyse that our foreign enemies have been applying various tactics of subversion inside Pakistan. In this context, in the past, massive explosion destroyed the Pearl Continental hotel in Peshawar, killing, more than 15 persons in a suicide attack. Sources said that the gunman, sitting in one car, first started firing at the security persons and then exploded their first vehicle to give a safe-passage to other truck which was carrying 500 kilograms of explosives and stormed into the heavily secured hotel.

It is notable that on October 15, 2009, at least 16 people including 12 personnel of the security forces had been martyred in foiling three separate terrorist attacks by killing 9 terrorists at FIA Building, Manawan Police Training Centre and Bedian Elite Police Training Centre in Lahore. Four days before that event, nine militants targeted the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi where in a successful operation of 18-hour, Pak army foiled a major tragedy by rescuing 39 hostages and killing eight terrorists. In the event, 12 soldiers, a Brigadier and a Lt. Colonel had also been martyred. In a similar type of terror-attack which had targeted the bus of Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore on March 3, 2009 had killed 8 persons in wake of a continuous gunfire by the militants. Pakistani officials confirmed that “grenades and rocket launchers had been recovered” which were of foreign origin. Afterwards, official inquiry disclosed that RAW was behind that terror incident.

However, besides other previous suicide attacks, conducted in the Marriot Hotel at Islamabad, Rescue 15 building at Lahore which also damaged other buildings of the Lahore Capital City Police Office (CCPO) and Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) which was the main target, but could not be hit due to heavy firing by the security guards on the terrorists who came along with the vehicle and arms—were some of the other events of the same war against Pakistan. Nevertheless, the terror-incidents, especially at Naval Base in Karachi, at GHQ in Rawalpindi and in Lahore at FIA Building, Manawan Police Training Centre and Bedian Elite Police Training Centre which had involved gun battles between the terrorists and the security forces along with pattern of subversive acts through suicide attacks and bomb blasts which have also been intensified in the past few days—clearly show that secret CIA, RAW and Mossad have been waging a new style war against Pakistan, which also includes tactics of guerilla warfare—through their well-trained insurgents who could conduct attacks in major cities despite Pakistan’s successful military operations against the militants and the death of the renowned militant commanders. :((

While, a perennial wave of these attacks clearly proves that foreign intelligence agencies have modified their tactics of subversion in Pakistan. Apart from direct suicide events, militants, armed with hand grenades, machine guns and other latest weapons also come to help the explosive-laden vehicles so as to penetrate the security at the target points and to clear the way for the blast. Sometimes, exchange of fire takes place between the saboteurs and the security guards, and sometimes, purpose is directly to kill the security personnel. In this regard, in most of the terror-tragedies, huge quantity of explosives is also being used. Another technique of the foreign-trained terrorists is that they camouflage themselves by wearing the uniform of Pakistani security forces so as to deceive the security guards and to get inside the targeted point for conducting their assigned task. In 2009, U.N.’s World Food Program in Islamabad was attacked by a suicide bomber who was wearing an official uniform. Again, the militants who attacked the GHQ were also wearing army uniforms.

Notably, on January 27, 2011, in Lahore, an American national, David Raymond  shot dead two Pakistani youths, while a third was crushed by the driver of a Parado jeep, who was called by him for help. David and persons, sitting in the jeep were also carrying weapons. Police arrested David Raymond and registered a case, while loaded weapons, a GPS satellite tracking device, photographs of Pakistan’s defence installations including tribal areas were also discovered from him. Pakistan’s sources and some American media indicated that David Raymond including his companions were agents of the American CIA and were on an anti-Pakistan mission. In fact, he is part of the illegal activities of the Blackwater whose employees entered Pakistan in the guise of diplomats.

It is of particular attention that a few days before the arrest of David, Pakistani security officials foiled an attempt by the Indian intelligence agency to enact a fake encounter for implicating Pakistan in incidents of cross border terrorism. The plan was unearthed when a suspect, working for the Indian RAW was apprehended at Sialkot border area, while attempting to cross over to India through the border security fence. Entrance points on the fence are locked and controlled by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). The suspect has confessed to work as an Indian spy who was tasked to recruit agents from Pakistan to work for Indian intelligence. On March 2 this year, the cold-blooded murder of the Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Minorities Affairs, Shahbaz Bhatti distorted the image of the country abroad. It is another tactic of the foreign elements who wanted to show that religious minorities are not safe in Pakistan.

Particularly in the last three years, a number of times, arms and guns were also captured from Americans traveling in vehicles in various cities of Pakistan, camouflaged with dark mirrors. In fact, in the past 12 months, Pakistan’s security forces and ISI have broken the backbone of the suicide bombers by arresting most of their commanders and insurgents, while thwarting a number of suicide missions through pre-arrests. But RAW, CIA and Mossad have succeeded in training the new culprits who are regularly being sent to Pakistan with a view to destablising our country. Now, this fact is known to everyone that Pakistan is the only nuclear country in the Islamic world. Hence, US, Israel and India are in collusion to weaken it by creating lawlessness for achieving their secret strategic interests. For this purpose, they are waging a new style guerrilla warfare against Pakistan. Without any doubt these foreign elements are behind the Naval Base attack in Karachi. :(( :((

shooting a man at 600yards is not childs play ... even for a static target....has to be a well trained sniper for that.

Pak jernails must be feeling uncomfortable now, with such sniper teams on the loose ... if 10 people in the attack team escaped as reported.

Were they Iranians?
It's possible that they were part of Mujahid second line troops roughly equivalent to Indian territorial army.

The indoctrination is much more in Mujahid battalions and they get training like regular military.
It's also possible that this was an underhanded warning to Chinese done by lower level ISI/TSPA not to push TSP too hard to mend fences with India and Unkil.

During Lal Masjid operation too, the yahoos had gone against Chinese as it was due to some Chinese massage parlour girls getting TFTA treatment.

The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has not forgotten the role of China in exercising pressure on the then President Pervez Musharraf to order commando action inside the Lal Masjid of Islamabad from July10 to 13, 2007. The commando action led to the death of Abdul Rashid, a cleric popular with the Pashtun tribals, and of a large number of tribal girls from the Pashtun tribal belt studying in a girls' madrasa attached to the Masjid. The madrasa was destroyed during the commando action.

2. Before the commando action, there was an incident in Islamabad in which students studying in the girls' madrasa attached to the Lal Masjid---some of them Uighurs--- kidnapped six Chinese women working in a massage parlour of Islamabad and accused them of working as prostitutes. They were subsequently released. It was after this incident that the Chinese authorities strongly took up with Musharraf the question of taking action against the madrasa students who were responsible for the kidnapping. Unnerved by the strong Chinese reaction, Musharraf ordered the commando action, which resulted in a huge tragedy.

Who is behind Naval Base attack?
Sajjad Shaukat

Total Conspiracy and whines.
How did Raymond Davis become David Raymond? No attention to details by conspiracy theory writers? Shame shame, I send lanat to these substandard theorists, shireen aunty was better in these matters, atleast would write proper masaledar theories

This is very plausible. For all the flak Afghan "military" gets they might have operators trained by unkil's green berets to infiltrate and cause enough takleef to Jernails.
Notice how unkil's media has kind of downplayed the attack.

Sky Wars: Pakistan, India and China
Pakistan has been promised an urgent delivery of a fresh batch of 50 advanced multi-role JF-17 Thunder fighter jets by China during the visit last week of Prime Minister Yousuf Gilani to Beijing.

India has fought wars with both China and Pakistan while Beijing and Islamabad have never. The maxim of ‘my enemy’s enemy is my friend’ makes sense to cultivate by these two. However, because of the policies and goals and economic and military capacities, this is not an equal relationship. China gets the satisfaction of strategic policy encirclement of India by being Pakistan’s ‘all-weather friend’. All Pakistan gets is a guarantee of no veto against it in the United Nations. China doesn’t do grants, aid and budgetary support – the three perennial shopping items in Pakistan’s basket. The best it does is investment and that’s purely profit-centric, Beijing managing to recoup any money it ‘gives away’ in this shape to Pakistan. The 50 Thunder jets is the perfect ingredient of this unequal but functional relationship: Pakistan restores some of its India-centric edge in the sky while China actually gets money from Pakistan to install strategic air restraints over India towards the side of India where Beijing is not itself present! Hence the Indian concern at the Thunder deal between Islamabad and Beijing.

But the problem, from a citizen’s perspective in Pakistan, is that despite their one war, China and India are also major trade partners while Pakistan is a small fry when it comes to being a commerce pair. According to the Confederation of Indian Industry, while international trade has been growing at around 15 per cent on an average, India-China trade has increased by more than 50 per cent annually in the last five years. In 2008, China became India’s largest trading partner and the bilateral annual trade between the two countries touched $52bn. India has emerged as the 7th largest export market of China and 10th largest trade partner. The bilateral trade between the two most populous countries is set to cross $100bn per annum by end of 2012. Since it is projected that, by 2050, India and China will be the two leading economies in the world, it is inevitable that bilateral trade between the two countries will be among the most important economic relationships in the world. And all this between two traditional rivals! Why should China want to disturb this trade balance in its favor for Pakistan’s obscure advantage when Beijing can get Indian money to beef up its military edge against New Delhi!

The Sino-Pak annual trade by comparison is puny despite some strides in recent years. It has increased from $1.9bn in 2002 to $6.9bn in 2011. The two have vowed to ramp this up to $15bn by 2014. China, which has surpassed the EU as Pakistan’s second-largest trading partner, exported goods worth $5.5bn to Pakistan in 2010 and imported $1.3bn worth of products. This means Pakistan is a net exporter of money to China! And yet Pakistan crows about a relationship that is ‘deeper than the oceans and higher than the mountains’. The reality is that Pakistan sells itself cheap for this grossly unequal relationship for merely a veto shield at the UN.

The real story is not that China is providing Pakistan a clutch of fighter planes or that India has problems with China squeezing it a bit in the western sector – after all India’s own fighter jet acquisition spree more than neutralises any strategic edge Beijing or Islamabad can sculpt from this deal. The story is in what has been left unsaid: why can’t Pakistan invest $1.25bn to be paid for the planes in its tanking economy to revive it and with the profits generated buy whatever planes it wants? After all Pakistan can’t afford to go to war with India anytime soon as it only has six days of oil reserves and can’t push the fight more than six days and neither does China want Delhi and Islamabad to actually fight a war. So while Pakistan has an as-yet unnecessary edge in the sky what about the situation on the ground? Where will the money come from to cut the burgeoning poverty, unemployment and illiteracy?
