Lalmohan Ji, one need not have immigration papers to apply for 'refugee' status. At the fall of Rawalpindi/ Isloo all they need are some chartered planes. I think though Rajesh Ji may be right, this belongs to the managing Paki failure thread.

I meant figuratively, me thinks the second option is more appropriate, ISI was caught unaware as they thought US has given a list and they can just sit on it. Little did they realize that knan may take mattes into his own hands. IK had just moved to that village and was meeting some chums in an apple orchard! Khans intelligence should have been impeccable?shiv wrote:If the ISI sold him down the river, it means that they had some control over his fate. If the lost him, it means the ISI did not have a clue. I believe that this is true and that too much effort has been put into giving the ISI a formidable reputation that it does not deserve.

there is a difference in
-residency permit
-having a residence
you can rent/own property in many of Oiropean countries==having a residence
to live in them you need permit==residency permit
and no, i have property so i have right to live automatically is not possible, and with mass exodus kinda situation "refuge vissa" is given onlee, and you live in refuge camps not in properties you own/rent.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A former managing director of a Chinese company appeared in federal court Thursday on charges that she secretly exported hundreds of gallons of paint coatings to a nuclear power plant in Pakistan.
Prosecutors say Xun Wang, who pleaded not guilty and was ordered held, exported the high-performance coatings to the Chasma II plant without obtaining the required license from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Wang at the time was managing director of architectural coatings at PPG Paints Trading, which in December pleaded guilty to exporting high-performance coatings to the same nuclear reactor and agreed to pay a $3.75 million penalty. The company is a foreign subsidiary of Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries, Inc.
The Commerce Department in June 2006 denied PPG Industries' request for a license to export the coatings. PPG Industries officials notified Wang of the decision and said that she and other company officials "must abide by the ruling."
Nonetheless, the indictment alleges, Wang and other PPG Paints Trading representatives arranged to export the coatings to the Pakistani reactor through a third-party company in China. The purchase orders falsely identified a Chinese nuclear power station as the end user for the shipments, prosecutors say.
She was arrested in Georgia on a federal warrant last month and appeared Thursday in U.S. District Court in Washington, where she faces charges including conspiracy and illegal exporting. She was ordered held without bond, pending a detention hearing on Tuesday.

The demands of PC (and the fear of more terrorist attacks in their markets and malls) always keep western reporters a bit subdued...on top of that most of Pakbarianism was directed at India so Unkil and his media corps cared a rats a.s. They were advising us how to be nice and turn the other cheek. But then TSP got bold and as the tamil saying goes, after biting the goat and cow it started biting the man...then of course, all velvet gloves are off...no more 'be nice to them, talk to them' bullshit..

NY Times editorial:
A Pakistani Journalist’s Murder
A Pakistani Journalist’s Murder
After the Pakistani journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad was murdered in May, suspicion fell on Inter-Services Intelligence, the country’s powerful spy agency. Mr. Shahzad reported aggressively on the infiltration of militants into Pakistan’s military and had received repeated threats from ISI. Other journalists said they, too, have been threatened, even tortured, by security forces.
Now the Obama administration has evidence implicating the ISI in this brutal killing. According to The Times’s Jane Perlez and Eric Schmitt, American officials say new intelligence indicates that senior ISI officials ordered the attack on Mr. Shahzad to silence him. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed on Thursday that Pakistan’s government “sanctioned” the killing, but he did not tie it directly to ISI. The murder will make journalists and other critics of the regime even more reluctant to expose politically sensitive news. The ISI is also proving to be an increasingly dangerous counterterrorism partner for the United States.
After Mr. Shahzad’s killing, ISI insisted it had no role, contending the death would be “used to target and malign” its reputation. The ISI and the army, which oversees the intelligence agency, were once considered Pakistan’s most respected institutions. Now they are sharply criticized at home for malfeasance and incompetence.
There is evidence that they were complicit in hiding Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad and that the ISI helped plan the Mumbai attack in 2008. They failed to prevent the recent attack on a naval base in Karachi. Mr. Shahzad disappeared two days after publishing an article suggesting the attack was retaliation for the navy’s attempt to crack down on Al Qaeda militants in the armed forces.
It’s not clear how high up the culpability for Mr. Shahzad’s murder goes — or whether there are any officials left in the ISI or the army who have the power and desire to reform the spy agency. President Asif Ali Zardari and his government, while not implicated in these heinous acts, have been a disappointment, largely letting the military go its own way. They need to find Mr. Shahzad’s murderers and hold them accountable. And they must find the courage to assert civilian control over security services that have too much power and are running amok.
Mr. Zardari needs to speak out firmly against abuses, insist on adherence to the rule of law and join his political rival, Nawaz Sharif, in pressing the security services to change. That can start by insisting on the retirement of Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, the ISI chief, and the appointment of a more credible successor.
The United States needs to use its influence to hasten Mr. Pasha’s departure. It should tell Pakistan’s security leadership that if Washington identifies anyone in ISI or the army as abetting terrorists, those individuals will face sanctions like travel bans or other measures. The ISI has become inimical to Pakistani and American interests.

And now comes the chutzpah!! Pakistan says India rejected revenue sharing plan. The gall!
Pakistan’s cricket chief Ijaz Butt has said India rejected a proposal to share revenue from a possible series between the arch rivals on the grounds that India will play host. “We hope the series will be revived and we told them we are ready to play in India but revenue should be shared 50-50, but they did not accept the proposal,” Butt said in an interview broadcast late on Thursday.
Yeah, like Indian team has better things to do and better teams to play. Now go play Afghanistan.“Naturally, compared to what we earn when we play any other top country, we earn much more if we play India. But we have to sort out details, but what they say is basically a one-sided affair,” said Butt.

I have seen no public info either way. Do you have any specific info saying the ISI sold him out? The reason I ask is because it makes a world of a difference whether the "sold him out"or "lost him despite protecting him"
If they sold him out - the ISI is an efficient feared organization that has all this under control.
If the lost him, it means the ISI did not have a clue. I believe that this is true and that too much effort has been put into giving the ISI a formidable reputation that it does not deserve.

As of late 2010, the International Panel on Fissile Materials estimated that Pakistan had an inventory of approximately 2,600 kilograms (kg) of highly enriched uranium (HEU) and roughly 100 kg of weapon-grade plutonium (International Panel on Fissile Materials, 2010). This is enough to produce 160–240 warheads, assuming that each warhead’s solid core uses either 12–18 kg of HEU or 4–6 kg of plutonium.

Karachi's ethnic, political violence kills 70 in 3 days
KARACHI (Reuters) - Pakistani police and paramilitary troops were ordered on Friday to shoot on sight in its largest city Karachi after up to 70 people were killed in three days of ethnic and political violence.
Shops and fuel stations were shut and public transport idled after the city's dominant political party, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), announced a day of mourning in response to the latest surge in violence in the country's financial and commercial hub.
"We have issued orders to the security forces to shoot anyone involved in violence on the spot," Sharjeel Memon, the provincial information minister, told Reuters.
"In addition to the police and Rangers, another 1,000 personnel of the Frontier Constabulary will be deployed in the city to control the violence," he said, referring to another paramilitary force.
Karachi police chief Saud Mirza said 63 people had died in the violence since Tuesday, with around 150 injured. Memon said 70 people had been killed in violence.
"Thirty-seven people were killed yesterday alone," Memon said.
VIOLENCE SPREADING
Most of the casualties over the past three days were reported in the city's western Qasba Colony and adjoining areas -- a multi-ethnic, lower middle class neighborhood.
But slowly, trouble is spreading to other parts of the city.
Firing could be heard in several areas on Friday, and in some spots residents burned tires and threw stones at the few passing vehicles on the street.
Huddles of people waited in vain at bus stops for public transport that never came.
Most shops were closed, with corrugated steel shutters drawn against the violence outside. Every few kilometers, a small group of lightly armed police stood a wary watch, while rangers and cops in pickups patrolled the empty streets.
The stock market was open, but the main index was down 0.68 percent by midday (0700 GMT) in light trade.
"Not many people are willing to trade today and everyone is concerned about the situation in the city," said Sajid Bhanji, a director at brokers Arif Habib Ltd.
"The stock market has also announced that the settlement of today's trades will be done on Monday, which shows they are worried about the situation."
HISTORY OF VIOLENCE
Karachi, home to more than 18 million people, has a long history of ethnic, religious and sectarian violence.
It was a main target of al Qaeda-linked militants after the September 11 2001 attacks on the United States, when Pakistan joined the U.S.-led campaign against militancy, and foreigners were attacked in the city several times.
A recent report from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said a total of 1,138 people were killed in Karachi in the first six months of 2011, of whom 490 were victims of political, ethnic and sectarian violence.
The latest surge in violence in the southern city came days after the MQM announced to quit the ruling coalition.
The MQM, which mostly represents the Mohajirs -- descendents of Urdu-speakers who migrated from India after the creation of Pakistan in 1947 -- and its rival, the ethnic Pashtun-based Awami National Party (ANP), are blamed for most of the violence, though both parties deny the charges.
"It's definitely a political and ethnic issue, and a strong political commitment would be needed to bring peace to the city," said a senior security official, requesting not to be named.
"To open fire and kill a few miscreants may stop the violence for now, but in the long-run, a political resolution is a must, or else we will see another surge after a few days," he said.
The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad released a statement from Ambassador Cameron Munter condemning the violence.
"We call on all parties to refrain from further violence and work toward a peaceful resolution of differences," the statement read.
TROUBLING QUESTIONS
In some ways, Karachi raises more troubling questions over Pakistan's stability than the northwest border regions seen as a global hub for militants and a huge concern for the West.
As the commercial hub, any trouble could disturb industrial activity, and have serious consequences for the economy.
"If the government does not pay immediate attention to the worsening situation of Karachi, and does not stop the loss of innocent blood, we will shut down our business centers and industries," Muhammad Saeed Shafiq, president of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said in a statement.
According to officials, Karachi contributes 68 percent of the government's total revenue and 25 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).
