Agni-V launch rescheduled for today

The Hindu article says it is rescheduled to be tested sometime now.

The first developmental trial was originally scheduled between 8 and 8.30 pm on Wednesday. But charged clouds, persistent lightning and thunder forced the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to reschedule the launch between 7.30 am and 8.30 am on Thursday.

NDTV says

India's first Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM), Agni-V, will be test-fired from Wheeler Island off the Odisha coast at around 7:45 am today. The test launch was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was postponed due to bad weather.

The black RV is the real deal. The blue colored one could be a picture of a mock-up. It was published earlier and could be file photo.

Thanks for posting the above, gives an excellent reference frame w.r.t humans.

Here are the salient points (IMHO):

1. The 3rd stage is a true conical motor. This is really cutting edge. Extremely difficult and says a lot about the sophistication DRDO has reached! That is why it took time for them to develop the 3rd stage (given that they had already developed the other two, it should not have been that difficult, composite or not). Now it all makes sense, the time it took to develop the 3rd stage.

2. What I think is the warhead is the 150-300 kt TN maal. Yes, it is that big and it is single warhead. The conical motor will propel the single warhead to its ultimate destination (minimum 5000 kms) and at high accuracy.

3. MIRV will consist of the 20-40 kt petals, mounted on a conventional cylindrical 3rd stage. ISRO already demonstrated its capability by injecting multiple satellites into precise orbits. What goes for launching multiple sats goes for launching multiple warheads (and in this case MIRVs). The MIRV version of Agni-5 will be the same height (and girth) except the 3rd stage will be cylindrical and the top will be semi-hemispherical.

I think it is time for BRF to coin a word that describes "yellow pants".

Also they should have coloured Agni-V in a dark color (like black) and should have included some rice based pudding around as prasadam.

Excellent primer on RLG (this is not the first time it is used, this is the first time it is showed) and the carbon composite for the re-entry. Pallav Bhagla was stunned when he was touching the other side of the tile, while an oxy-acetaline flame was burning the opposite side! Excellent!!

Must watch for all jingoes and as one profoundly major said, being short and dark has its advantage in colder heights.

Yes, I too think there are two different front ends. This version will deliver the heavy single payload with accuracy and low detection due to the BGRV mode. The conical motor makes it integral. Also the CP of the conical motor is aft of the CG and provides static margin during the BGRV phase.

The other version is the MIRV one. Only thing am not sure about yet is if they have propulsive units for MARV phase: evasion, accuracy etc?

Does anyone know why DRDO has been so far unable to make the first stage rocket motor casing composite? Does the difficulty correlate to size. Also any guesses as to range increase( for same throw weight) if all 3 stages are composite?

It has taken almost 15 days for India to position a couple of warships, with DRDO scientists, tracking and monitoring systems on board, mid-way along the flight trajectory as well as near the impact point in southern Indian Ocean.

They are not saying Bay of Bengal, but SIO which is way south for the full 5000 km range

, roughly twice the distance from Dilli to KanyaKumari.

Arun thinks it could be BGRV and ballistic hybrid version. The conical motor propels it in BGRV phase and the last few miles is in ballistic phase.

The tension of waiting for these results is like my 12th std or CA results.

Meanwhile, given our repeated announcements on timing, I hope we have completely reduced the onboard fuel on many a Chinese and Massa satellite, some mentioned the special satellite from Norad, me thinks we are tracking it, allowed it burn precious fuel while making some overhead passes and then launched it when its orbit was somewhere else.

This is NOT a MIRV missile test, it is only with a SINGLE Warhead. Another test will take place in the near future for the MIRV's, obviously visible from the warhead pics posted in the earlier pages...

Still no word from DRDO or the Scientists... Footage will be released shortly along with telephonic interviews, however media has made it clear that access is strictly on a need to know basis & they are not pressing the issue further because they understand the issue of "national security"
