When I first saw this headline, I thought it was an April Fool's joke (for Nov.). This one came out of the blue. The terrorist had his trial and got his due.

It's such a well-executed operation that no one got a whiff of it. Closure for lots of bereaved families.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

What will they do with his miserable corpse? Perhaps it should be handed over to Pakistan where they can start building a mausoleum to gazis.

I think the other terrorists in that event (who were killed outright) were buried near a jail, if I remember correctly. No Muslim institution in Bombay was willing to accept their bodies (and neither did Pakistan). In this case, however, Kasab's Pakistani connection is clearly known (Dawn had interviewed his father in his hometown). So, the body could be handed over to his father in Pakistan (potentially) .

So conclusive proof that Afzal Guru is all about psuedo-secularism.

Mumbai attacker Ajmal Kasab hanged by neck in Pune's Yerwada jail in secret operation
Published: Wednesday, Nov 21, 2012, 8:17 IST
http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/report_m ... on_1767398
DNA
In a top-secret operation, Pakistan national Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab was hanged in the high-security Yerwada Jail in Pune early on Wednesday after a four-year-long trial. Kasab, who was being kept at the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai, was moved to the Yerwada jail on Sunday night.

The lone surviving gunman in the Mumbai attack of November 26, 2008 was shifted to the Yerwada Jail following the rejection of his mercy petition by the President earlier on November 5.

In a formal announcement made by Maharashtra home minister early at 8:30 am on Wednesday, RR Patil said, "Kasab's hanging is a tribute to all the 166 people killed as well as those police officer martyred in the attack."

"Today, 7:30AM, Ajmal Kasab was hanged in the Uerwada prison," confirmed Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde. "Of the 10 people who attacked Mumbai, one was arrested alive. Just as I landed from the Interpol meeting in Rome on November 5, the mercy petition lay before me. We had recommended that his mercy petition be rejected. Later, it was rejected by the President on November 8."

When asked if a death warrant was issued, Shinde said, "The secrecy was necessary as it was a high-profile operation." Stating that Pakistan has been informed of the hanging, Shinde said, "If there is a request for Kasab's body, we would have obliged, but there was no such request." All the other bodies of the terrorists killed in the Mumbai attack were buried in India after Pakistan refused to claim them.

"Yes, Kasab has been hanged this (Wednesday) morning at 7.30 am in Yerawada central jail," special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who led the 26/11 terror attacks case, told IANS.

It may be recalled that the visit by the Pakistan interior minister Rehman Mallik due to begin on November 22, was cancelled at the last minute as India did not want to host a Pakistani delegation at the time of the execution which was pre-decided soon after the President rejecting Kasab's mercy plea.

Once a mercy plea is rejected by the President, the case goes back to the trial court, which then takes into account the Supreme Court upholding its death sentence order. The trial court then sets up a date for the hanging. However, in this case, the decision may been taken on the prison officer's level itself, thus opening a debate on the issue.

Sentenced to death by the Bombay High Court in last October, Kasab was convicted on charges ranging from treason to waging war against India. His appeal in the Supreme Court was turned down in August.

"It is a warning for those trying to instigate terror attacks in India, as well as succour for those who have suffered due to these attacks," said BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

The hanging of the Mumbai attacker a day before the winter session of the Parliament is expected to provide a temporary succour to the government facing a no-confidence motion against it.

Pakistan was let know yesterday via the External Affairs Ministry; however Pakistan refused to accept/acknowledge the letter. So a fax was also sent. Pakistan has not come forward to claim the body. Pakistan is keeping mum.

Finally, some sort of closure for the victims of 26/11. Not only our citizens but also other nationalities who were innocent.

I am glad this was done in the way it was. On the one hand, we have been bemoaning the direction that the Aman ki Tamasha and WKKs were leading us to. On the other, I feel that even the Pakis and Unkil would not have been aware of this. All the pyar we were showing the Pakis would have lulled them into a 1TFTA=SDRE frame of mind. And then comes this lovely big strong Jhappad.

Am not batting for any political party, but it does send a message, as a nation, we can and will, when we find it appropriate (and we can disagree and debate on appropriate), do the right thing.

I was suspicious that something was afoot when MMS reportedly decided not to go to Porkistun and Rehman was asked to stay put in his pig slop and not come here.

Its Novemebr too, and thanksgiving :)

Now, would the pigs do something else in retaliation? We have to be prepared for that.

Bhisham Mansukhani, a 26/11 Survivor, blasts INC on Times Now. He calls it a political game, and postulates INC did not have justice in mind but conducted this just to game the credit of having done something.

ps: The concept of 'closure' is being imported from the West, methinks. The survivors and the victims family have been affected very deeply. Nothing can be done to bring back the dead. One can call it justice, but the word 'closure' is quite inappropriate.

Yes and they wil prove that 26/11 was an Islamic action against Kafirs sponsored by Pakistan. It will be one more link t the religion of peace is they do that. Listen to what Kasab and his friends were told by the handlers.

No closure. Next in line

Why are Indians celebrating? Pakistan has also hung people who waged war against Pakistan like Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

I agree. The desi news reporters tend to use the word closure very easily, sometimes within days of a tragic event (just because a perpetrator is caught). How can families have 'closure' just because one of the 10+ terrorists was hanged. It takes years, and sometimes never to get 'closure', however they mean it. Unrelated thought- Yerwada jail is where Gandhiji was imprisoned by the British, IIRC.

^^^ Closure in this case is as much of a closure when OBL was killed. A western import for sure.

I just came back from Pune 10 days back. Drove past Yerawada on the way to Lohegaon. Was surprised at the serenity and cleanliness surrounding it. It must have been heavily guarded with Kasab there.

Bhisham Mansukhani in Times Now, correctly argued, and raised how this is not like how America killed OBL. He brought out how such situations repeat, and nothing much is done. This is just one step in the right direction.

Let us not get Americanism in to Indian situations.

Wow, I am amazed at the level of protocol both the Central and State (MH) government have used thus far. Looks like the Central government event sent a copy of the courier receipt to MH. Ministry of External Affairs seems to have crossed its i's and t's. And all babus and netas are talking fluently in one language - so far no confusion and consistent information. Looks like they have practiced the response before hand. Feels eerily good.

10:28 No claimants, Kasab cremated in Yerwada Jail:
Vicky Nanjappa reports: Ajmal Kasab, who was hanged till death at 7.30 am on Wednesday, has been cremated in Pune's Yerwada Jail.

This comes hours after Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde announced that Kasab's body will be laid to rest in India, as Pakistan has refused to claim it.

Not sure if he was actually cremated but Karma if he was!!

Good that this turd was hanged in secrecy. If a date was publicly announced, all the WKKs would have congregated in front of the prision holding candlelight vigils and asking for his pardon.

If Pakistan doesn't claim the body then he should be given a sky burial, like Tibetans do, in Siachen.

The Pakis will claim the body, but now the limelight is too much.
They might wait for things to cool down and then ask for the body.

But these are Pakistanis we are talking about. These guys refused to accept the dead bodies of their soldiers who were killed in Kargil, and the Indian army jawans and officers buried them with Pakistani flags and with the army imams reading their last rites.
Also Pervez musharraf ordered that the dead bodies of their soldiers be left on the heights in the snow, and they sent the bodies back to the soldier's villages one by one over several months so that the families could be told that they died just now, and not during the kargil betrayal.

Pakistani foot soldiers - weather terrorists / Jihadi / or uniformed, need to know this - Your officers and generals will betray you halfway through to save the image of their arses. The foot soldier will uselessly become cannon fodder, providing live target practice to the adversary.

Buried at Yervada jail as per other reports. You will need to get in there to pay homage to this Islamic Ghazi. But cremation is a better option IMO

He might have been cremated:

Although Kasab's faith states that he shall be buried, in this case it would be cremated by the jail authorities if there is no claim by any of his relatives. There shall be no public glare of the cremation and in all possibility it is likely to take place this evening itself.
