GSLV-D5 Launch status and post launch discussions

Post by disha »

This thread is specific to track GSLV-D5 Launch status and post launch discussions.

ISRO is providing web cast at : http://webcast.isro.gov.in/

If one has google chrome on win7., the plugin works. Not sure if the media server will work or not! :-)

The current launch status is http://www.isro.org/gslv-d5/d5-updates.aspx

GSLV-D5 will be launched some 16 Hours from now., this is one of the moment that is truly historical. Let us hope that India will be able to make another tryst with its destiny.

It's 1pm now. Expect 5000 new pointless articles to come up between now and 4:18pm on news.google.com for keyword "gslv". Image

One question - cryogenic fuel is normally transported in huge Dewar type of containers. So why is it mentioned that they are chiolling and then pumping the fuel ? Are they lowering the temperature further to prevent "in fueling transit" temperature rise ?

ISRO should assemble a fully final GSLV and let it stand for 30 days and see what happens to the parts every 2 hours. Last time it leaked and they said something like it happens to that specific alloy after a period is irresponsible behaviour. They should have pre-tested the alloy's durability in advance.

The problem is one of the rolling stock they used an older version stock which is known to develop cracks. They ahd changed the stock to a different AFNOR number alloy

nvishal do you think you can load cryogenic fuel and tons of toxic liquid fuel and keep it standing for days ?

Nvishal ji, the difficulty and expense in maintaining LH2 and corrosive LOX for long periods is why most ICBMs don't have cryogenic engines.

A material science guy would laugh at that excuse

Are you saying that these nationally broadcasted launches are "tests" in reality? Image

The problem that occurred during last attempt was due to a bit bold step with confidence in the second stage fuel tank. We cant say that ISRO showed negligence. it is just an accident. The same tank was used in most of the previous launches.

By the way..Liquid/Cryo fuels have to be loaded just before launch.

Gentlemen, fuel loading is always done at the end for stages with liquid or Cryo fuels. Only Solid fuelled stages are pre-cast... also. Fueling is done ONLY at the launch site and right before the launch.
