Here is a snippet from Wikileaks about the dead prince Rashid
(C/NF) As mentioned reftel, HbM was born on November 14,
1982 and is MbR's second oldest son by his first official wife,
Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Jumma. MbR's oldest son, Rashid,
does not play a public role in Dubai affairs. (Note: It is
alleged that Rashid killed an assistant in the Ruler's office,
thereby forfeiting his opportunity to be heir.
Post believes
MbR has a total of 20 children from both his official and
unofficial wives. End note). HbM graduated from Sandhurst
Royal Military College in 2001 and the following year was
appointed chairman of Dubai Bank.

saudis do not seem to have any artillery/mortar nor the ability to co-ordinate such with infantry.

they are trying to accomplish with tanks/ifvs what well trained infantry + artillery support usually does. they will pay a heavy price on tanks in the mountains just as the soviets did in Af. they do not seem to even have a infantry screen to protect these isolated tanks that get picked off. sahebs want to fight a war from air conditioned protection of their tanks.

I think that was denied , From pics it appears Russia is providing them upgraded BTR-80A , ATGM/Small Arm stuff , Pantisyr Short Range Missile
most likely Russian SF units and Intel are working in Syria along with Iran and perhaps even China.

Putin does not have support among Russia people for Syria issue like he has for Ukraine , so any large deployment of ground forces are out of picture unless SCO or CSTO comes into the picture for peace keeping operation

Very strangely, this scenario looks like liberation of Bangla war wherein the Paki army armed to the teeth with western weapons genocided Bangla population, majorly Hindus, and Russians stopped American and British help to Pakistani troops near the coast. If Russians had been a little late, the Indian Army would have been at receiving end of thousands of Paki barbarians set free by any successful US/UK action and facing situations further. Russians must have been at receiving end of American/European diplomatic maneuvers at the UN since its inception, and very much know how to tackle issues, F-22 and other such factors notwithstanding.

Anger after Saudi Arabia 'chosen to head key UN human rights panel'

Wife of imprisoned blogger Raif Badawi says move amounts to "a green light to flog him"
The United Nations is coming under fire for handing Saudi Arabia a key human rights role even though the Kingdom has “arguably the worst record in the world” on freedoms for women, minorities and dissidents.

UN Watch executive director Hillel Neuer said that the appointment, made in June but unreported until now,[*] may have been a consolation prize for the Saudis after they withdrew their bid to head the 47-nation council following international condemnation of the kingdom’s human rights record.
[*] Firstly, it proves that "Saudi Money Diplomacy" is working. Secondly what are the reasons to keep the appointment secret until now ;thirdly were not the concerned United Nations authorities aware of the recent reprehensible behaviour of their staff at their New Delhi Embassy

Critics, including the wife of imprisoned pro-democracy blogger Raif Badawi – sentenced to 1000 lashes for blogging about free speech – say that the appointment is “scandalous” and means that “oil trumps human rights”.
“It’s a sad comment on our world that oil continues to trump basic human rights principles.”

on paper all of these are mostly on order by Syria and russian pilots have just ferried in the kit and will stay to train syrian pilots in the same...

whispers claim the zaslon sf unit are also onsite.

would seem like a successor to the kgb "vympel" unit started with only 100 men and reporting direct to yuri andropov the kgb chief.

Zaslon and things like these are just CT stuff nothing more.

I think its better for Russia to just move out of this anti-ISIS campaigne , you cant decimate ISIS unless you stop the GCC/Saudi Funding and US tacit support. ISIS represent no lesser or more threat to Russia then it is for India , China or Brazil.

Its OK to provide arms and training to Iraq or Sirya to fight ISIS quite another thing to directly participate into it , Its like making direct enemies when there is none. Its a Shia-Sunni fight out there in ME.

There is little or no gain for Russia to be directly involved other then making enemies

well some refugees on the way out claim to have seen small units of blond, blue eyed, stone-faced warriors. the only one which fits that description + allied to Assad is Rus.

I am afraid just providing arms to Assad was not working, and he suffered serious reverses . Iraq relatively has a huge pop of shias and supplying arms and training might work, here the Rus might have to use their exp in checnya in tracking and eliminating terrorist leaders one by one. for this a on-ground network will have to be built. you cannot sit in the sky with drones and hope to make a impact, lessons have been learnt from afpak and baghdadi types are super careful for Comms security.

syria pop is now half under ISIS. that leaves only 10 million under Assad which includes old, young, women....his able-bodied trained manpower pool willing to fight would be barely 100K.

right now neither syria or iraq can put 2 veterans divisions into the field to take on the ISIS head to head. iran can but is denied the opportunity. so ISIS is getting a lot of headroom to consolidate and enjoy its reign unmolested. turkey can but not interested.

Bin Laden Group On The Firing Line
RIYADH:
Saudi Arabia’s decision to sanction the Binladin Group over the deadly Mecca crane collapse has come as a shock and could have serious consequences for one of the Kingdom’s most powerful firms.
The September 11 accident killed 108 people and injured about 400, including foreigners who had arrived ahead of the annual hajj pilgrimage which begins on Tuesday.

Analysts say it deeply troubled Saudi King Salman, the official custodian of Islam’s holiest sites, and prompted surprisingly swift action against the group, founded more than 80 years ago by the father of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and now chaired by Osama’s brother Bakr.
Analysts said the sudden punishment of the firm was astounding given its huge size and longstanding ties with the Saudi authorities.

“It is shocking,” said one Saudi analyst who did not want to be named, saying any moves to cause significant damage to the company would be like “America destroying General Motors” .

Even before the accident, rumours had been swirling of potential unhappiness with the group.[*]
[*] Maybe, the accident was just a pretext for 'getting rid of this group' or maybe they are not in favour with the current Royal Court; with these Absolute Rulers ,even very big and important decisions are made ad-hoc , no waiting for investigation, you never know where you stand!

Russia urges 'action' after shell hits Damascus embassy compound

Moscow (AFP) - Russia's foreign ministry on Monday called for "concrete action" after a shell landed on its embassy compound in the Syrian capital, blaming forces battling Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"A shell fell on the territory of the Russian embassy in Damascus on September 20 around 9:00am, going deep into the ground without causing damage," the ministry said in a statement.

"We ... condemn the criminal shelling of the Russian diplomatic presence in Damascus. We await a clear standpoint on this terrorist act from all members of the international community, including regional actors."

"What is needed is not just words but concrete action," the statement said, adding that "the shelling of the Russian embassy was done from the direction of Jobar, where the anti-government militants are based."

The militants have "outside sponsors" who are responsible for influencing their actions, the foreign ministry said.

The Russian embassy in Damascus' Mazraa neighbourhood had been hit by shells on prior occasions. In May, one person was killed by mortar rounds that landed nearby. Three were hurt when mortar rounds landed inside the compound in April.

The United States has accused Russia of recently deploying troops, artillery and aircraft to the war-torn country, ratcheting up fears Moscow may join in the fighting alongside its old ally Assad.

Moscow has insisted it is only fulfilling long-standing military contracts and is currently on a diplomatic push to get a US-led coalition of Western and regional powers fighting the Islamic State group to join forces with Assad against the jihadists.

Turkish jets hit Kurdish militant camps in Iraq, at least 55 killed: sources

At least 55 militants were killed when Turkish warplanes hit Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) camps in northern Iraq overnight, security sources said on Saturday, as Ankara shows no sign of easing up strikes on insurgents ahead of a Nov. 1 election.

The jets took off from a base in Diyarbakir, in Turkey's southeast, and later returned without damage, the sources said.

This report, originally from Reuters, is no longer available on the Reuters site. I'll post it in full, it gives a good impression of how Iraq's see/feel about the situation in Iraq. And it's bad, if this is really happening.

Some Iraqis ditch fight against Islamic State for life in Europe

By Saif Hameed and Stephen Kalin

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Some Iraqi soldiers are abandoning their posts and joining a wave of civilian migrants headed to Europe, raising new doubts about the cohesion of the country's Western-backed security forces in the fight against Islamic State militants.

Interviews with migrants and an analysis of social media activity show scores of fighters from the national army, police and special forces as well as Shi'ite militias and Kurdish peshmerga have left in recent months or plan to go soon.

They join more than 50,000 civilians who have left Iraq in the past three months, according to the United Nations, part of an even larger exodus from neighboring Syria and other conflict zones across the Middle East.

The inability of Iraq to retain its soldiers threatens to further erode morale in a military that has partially collapsed twice in the past year in the face of the Islamic State militant group.

It could also undermine the efforts of a U.S.-led coalition that has spent billions of dollars training and equipping Iraqi forces to take on the militants.

A spokesman for the Iraqi defense ministry said the military was not concerned about the migration of soldiers, which he put in the "tens" out of a security force estimated to number in the tens of thousands.

"The armed forces are performing their duties. There is no reason to be worried," said General Tahsin Ibrahim Sadiq.

But Saed Kakaei, adviser to the minister of peshmerga forces in northern Iraq's Kurdistan region, said while he could not provide a specific figure for how many peshmerga forces had left, the numbers were "concerning”.

The soldiers' departure highlights a pervasive sense of hopelessness among many Iraqis more than a year after Islamic State seized a third of their country's territory, threatened to overrun the capital and declared a modern caliphate.

Despite driving them back in some areas, members of the security forces say they are leaving because they face daily offensives by the insurgents, sectarian violence, and economic depression.

Many in the security forces are also frustrated and disillusioned with elected officials, who they allege abandoned them on the frontlines, while failing to provide adequate resources and enriching themselves through graft.

"Iraq is worth fighting for but the government is not," said a 22-year-old SWAT policeman who decided to emigrate after his brother was killed in battle earlier this year at the northern Baiji refinery where he was also posted.

"There is no concern for us at all. The government has destroyed us," he told Reuters, saying Baghdad's failure to reinforce soldiers had caused avoidable losses in a battle that has dragged on for more than a year.

Control of neighborhoods in Baiji, about 190 km (120 miles) north of Baghdad, has changed hands many times. Authorities said in July they had recaptured most of the town, but Islamic State attacked central neighborhoods days later, forcing pro-government forces to pull back.

Others echoed the policeman's concerns. A 33-year-old special forces member who was based in western Anbar province - an Islamic State stronghold - said he had lost any reason to stay, and joined 16 fellow soldiers who smuggled themselves to northern Europe last month.

"We were fighting while the government and political parties made it their mission to make money and officials sent their children to live abroad," he told Reuters via online messaging.

"What drove us to leave was seeing our guys getting wounded, killed or maimed, and nobody cared."

Baghdad launched a campaign to retake the Sunni heartland of Anbar after the provincial capital Ramadi fell in May, leaving only a few government holdouts across the sprawling desert territory.

But fighting has progressed fitfully with sectarian tensions coming to a head and ground advances delayed by explosives planted by Islamic State along roads and in buildings.

A special operations member based in Ramadi said the elite unit alone had seen more than 100 fighters leave for Europe in the past six months. Reuters could not independently verify this.

Many soldiers who left have changed their Facebook profiles from portraits in fatigues beside tanks or holding machine guns to photos riding bikes or relaxing in parks in Austria, Germany or Finland.

"MERELY TENANTS"

Iraqis have long complained of corruption and mismanagement in the government, including the armed forces. An official investigation last year found 50,000 "ghost soldiers" on the army's books. The "ghosts", the report said, helped fuel the military's collapse in June 2014 in the northern city of Mosul.

These men were on the army payroll but paid their officers a portion of their salaries and in return did not show up for duty, enriching their commanders and hollowing out the military force.

Iraq has since come to rely heavily on Shi'ite militias and volunteer fighters, grouped under a government-run body called the Hashid Shaabi. But even some Hashid, who were called to take up arms by the country's top Shi'ite cleric, are leaving.

A 20-year-old Shi'ite fighter from the eastern province of Diyala, who declined to identify himself or the specific militia he belonged to, said pro-government forces receive inadequate support to fight Islamic State.

He recently made a month-long journey to Sweden to join two cousins who are themselves former Iraqi police officers.

"You cannot fight a war or live in a country under these circumstances," he told Reuters via Facebook from the Stockholm area. The politicians "ransacked the country in the name of religion. Iraq is not ours anymore; we are merely tenants."

Reuters could not independently verify the fighter’s identity.

Hashid spokesman Ahmed al-Asadi could not provide an accurate count for fighters who had migrated, but said the government needed to do more to keep young Iraqis from leaving.

Reforms launched last month by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi seek to end a system of ethnic and sectarian quotas that has spawned corruption and mismanagement. The reforms also aim to improve accountability in the military and other state institutions.

But the initiative, hindered by bureaucracy and political jockeying, has led to few noticeable gains on the battlefield or improvements in people's daily lives; many lack basic services such as electricity.

Though Iraqis have been fleeing poor government, violence and economic hardship for decades, recent policy shifts in Europe have presented a fresh opportunity to escape.

Looking on this summer as refugees from neighboring Syria received a warm reception in Europe, many decided to leave at short notice, using Facebook and other social media to plan their trips.

The United Nations estimates hundreds of thousands more could leave Iraq in the coming months.

But the soldiers arriving in Europe face an unknown future. A spokeswoman for U.N. refugee agency UNHCR said those judged to be former combatants would not be granted refugee status.

His funeral was held in Kerala. The assistant's son has a similar role in the govt.

Syria sees Russia game changer, US-trained rebels enter fray

Damascus (AFP) - Syria predicted Sunday that Russia's growing military role will prove a game changer in the fight against jihadists, as 75 rebels trained under a beleaguered US programme entered the fray.

...

More important than the supply of arms to Syria is Russia's participation in the fight against Daesh and (Al-Qaeda franchise) Al-Nusra Front," Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said, using an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group.

Muallem, quoted by Syrian media in an interview with Russia Today television, said Moscow's increased role would "show up America's lack of a clear strategy" against the jihadists.

...

A US-backed rebel faction and a monitoring group said Sunday that 75 Syrian rebels trained to fight jihadists under a beleaguered American programme have crossed into northern Syria from Turkey.

"Seventy-five new fighters trained in a camp near the Turkish capital entered Aleppo province between Friday night and Saturday morning," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Hassan Mustafa, spokesman for the "Division 30" unit to which some of the rebels were deployed, confirmed to AFP that the group had entered Syria.

"Their training in Turkey lasted two months and they went directly to the front lines with Daesh. They are now in the town of Tal Rifaat," Mustafa said.

According to Abdel Rahman, the group entered in a convoy of a dozen cars with light weapons and ammunition, under air cover from the US-led coalition.

Before the fresh batch of fighters, the US-led train-and-equip programme had only managed to vet and train some 60 rebels to fight IS jihadists on the ground.

The $500 million programme run out of Turkey has been fraught with problems.

Shortly after the 54 fighters embedded with Division 30 in July, they suffered a devastating assault by Al-Nusra Front.

More than a dozen of Division 30's fighters were either killed or kidnapped by Al-Nusra, which accused them of being "agents of American interests".

The United States has since used its air power to help Division 30 push back other Nusra attacks and has said Syrian troops could be targeted if they attacked the US-backed forces.

US officials have also expressed fears Russia may strike the Western-backed rebels fighting Assad and ultimately risk a confrontation with forces fighting IS.

This is where we find out if the Russians still have any cojones left. Clearly the US is desperate to protect its ISIS and other jihadi pals; will the Russians call the bluff?

Putin: Syria does not intend to fight with Israel
http://in.rbth.com/news/2015/09/21/puti ... ael_426501
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday expressed confidence that Syria does not need warfare with Israel."As for shelling, we know, we condemn that shelling. As far as I know, makeshift missile systems are used in it," he said at talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has paid a visit to Moscow because he is concerned with the deteriorating situation in the Middle East."Israel and Russia have common interests-ensuring stability in the Middle East. I am here because of the complicated security situation, it is becoming more and more complicated," Netanyahu said at the meeting.Putin in his turn said that Moscow’s position in the Middle East will always remain responsible."Great many people from the former Soviet Union live in the state of Israel, and this has special impact on our inter-state relations, and all of Russia’s actions in the region will always be responsible," Putin said at a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Zeenews
http://zeenews.india.com/news/world/rus ... 00343.html

"There are 28 fighter and bomber aircraft" at an airfield in the western Syrian province of Latakia, one of the officials told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

A second official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the figure and added there were also about 20 Russian combat and transport helicopters at the base.

That official also said Russia was operating drones over Syria, but did not give additional details.

According to the officials, Russia has sent 12 SU-24 attack aircraft, 12 SU-25 ground attack aircraft and four Flanker fighter jets.

Analyst Jeffrey White of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy said: "They are not going to sit around and defend the airfield or maybe even the province of Latakia.

"This kind of aircraft suggests that the Russians intend to exert their combat power outside of Latakia in an offensive role."

Financial Times

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/95971a4e-607d ... z3mQvFJoF7

Russia is to deploy 2,000 military personnel to its new air base near the Syrian port city of Latakia, signalling the scale of Moscow’s involvement in the war-torn country.

The deployment “forms the first phase of the mission there”, according to an adviser on Syria policy in Moscow.

The force will include fighter aircraft crews, engineers and troops to secure the facility, said another person briefed on the matter.

The pair declined to confirm whether Moscow had sent surface-to-air missiles and fighter jets, as alleged by Washington at the weekend.

But Russian and western military experts said surface-to-air missiles were an integral part of the defences of any air base.

America and the West's dereliction of duty to stand upto ISIS has resulted in the Russian entry into the chessboard. Putin knows the importance of Syria and the need to defeat ISIS at any cost.Unfortunately, the Ca-Moron and O'Bomber have a blinkered view of global security and view Russia as an enemy not as a coalition partner against Islamic fundamentalism. We now see the danger of a proxy war between the US and Russia escalating even further, with the US and its Arab bum-chums supporting ISIS and anti-Assad factions vs Assad, and in fact risking a great possibility of actual conflict between the two superpowers in Syria.Imagine a situ where Russian air defences shoot down a US aircraft/drone or Russian pilots and US pilots end up in dogfights over Damascus?!

Refugee crisis: Saudi Arabia's offer to build 200 mosques in Germany for Syrian refugees branded 'cynical'
Saudi Arabia’s offer to build 200 mosques in Germany for the thousands of Syrian refugees that had made their way to the country has been branded “cynical” by German politicians.

The offer was made in response to the large numbers of refugees fleeing the crisis in the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia reportedly suggesting to build one mosque for every 100 asylum seekers crossing into Germany.

But Andrew Scheuer, the general secretary of the CSU party in Bavaria, has hit out against the offer, the Daily Mail reported.

“No, it is more than cynical. This is no Muslim Brotherhood. Where is the solidarity in the Arab world?” he asked. His sentiment was echoed by the CSU’s Stephan Mayer, who added that Germany does not need a cash donation to build the mosques but “solidarity with the refugees”.

Richard Dawkins, known for his controversial views on religion, has also waded into to issue, condemning Saudi Arabia’s offer “either as a sick joke or a sick insult to German generosity” as he believes the offer will not directly benefit the refugees seeking asylum in Germany.

Angela Merkel on Monday called for Europe’s leaders to work together and accept joint responsibility to seek a credible response to refugee crisis.

“Germany is willing to help. But it is not just a German challenge, but one for all of Europe,” she said ahead of an emergency summit on Wednesday. “Europe must acto together and take on responsibility. Germany can’t shoulder this task alone.”

Putin to Netanyahu: Syria Can’t Open a New Front Against You
TEL AVIV — In an attempt to assuage Israeli concerns about Moscow’s military buildup in Syria, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday told visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the Syrian Army is in no position to threaten the Jewish state.

“We know that the Syrian Army is in a situation where it is unable to open a new front. Our main purpose is to defend the Syrian state,” Putin told Netanyahu prior to heading into extensive talks on implications of the Russian buildup at Israel’s north.

According to a transcript released by Netanyahu’s office, Putin said he understood the Israeli leader's concerns and was “very happy you came to discuss every issue in detail.”

In his opening remarks, Netanyahu — accompanied by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) chief of staff and head of Israeli military intelligence — expressed concern that Iran and Syria are arming Lebanese-based Hezbollah with the purpose of opening a new front against Israel from the Syrian side of the Golan Heights.

He reiterated Israel’s policy of responding to attacks emanating from Syrian soil and preventing transfers of advanced weapons from reaching the hands of Lebanese Shiite forces fighting alongside Iran in support of the Moscow-backed Assad regime.

“As you know, in recent years, and especially in the past months, Iran and Syria are arming an extreme Islamic terror organization, Hezbollah, with advanced weaponry,” Netanyahu said.

Hezbollah, Netanyahu noted, “has already fired upon us over the years thousands of missiles and rockets against our cities.”

As for Iran, an increasingly close ally of Moscow that trains, funds and equips Hezbollah as a forward front against Israel, Netanyahu said the Islamic Republic, “under the protection of the Syrian Army, is trying to build a second terror front against us in the Golan.”

“Our policy is to thwart transfers of these weapons and to prevent creation of a terror front against us from the Golan territory,” he said.

Putin, according to the Israeli readout of opening remarks, condemned shelling and mortar attacks on Israel from Syrian soil, which he said were carried out by “home networks.” That term, when translated from Russia, distinguishes homemade weaponry from industrial grade weaponry.

The Russian leader told his guest, “Every action of Russia in the region has always been very responsible.”

He highlighted the many emigrants from the former Soviet Union now living in Israel as having “special significance” on the bilateral relationship.

Guess the Russians can now test their weapons in a real war scenario !! .. battle tested weapons have more market as the Americans show .. though the pictures of the Abrams and strykers hit by RPGs doesn't make for much of an advt !!
