Many more of these are needed. India is still asking soldiers to fight with both arms tied behind their backs - the hope is that one or two of these well-publicized blows will convince the majority of the adventurist desperadoes to go back to their villages and try to get jobs. But after the massacre of soldiers in the Manipur attack, there is no question of **NOT*** retaliating, and the swift and precise retaliation shows that there is enough intel with the govt. to massacre the whole bunch, any time. This is the message that must be broadcast all over the NE along with opportunity and a functioning bureaucracy and justice system.
Be ready for the Other Side to come out. Even as I type, Christianne Amanpour, Moni Basu, Arundhoti etc will be heading out there to stand ankle deep in the blood of innocents raped for 1000 hours by 700,000 Indian troops in the camps during those 20- minute raids. The children brutally bayoneted. The old men and women executed on their knees. All because they dared to ask for fair treatment from the yindootva-dominated Delhi guvrmand of idol-worshippers. If no children, wimmens etc were killed, well, they are going to be killed, disembowelled probaby, in time for the Wild Bunch to come and report.

I would much prefer to see a 100 Paki terrorist camps pulverized with 100% fatalities, tactical nukes if needed. A few PLA generals' palaces blown up along with their skyscrapers. This business in NE is tragic, ultimately it is Indians killing each other, with the war being fought mostly inside Indian territory. Shame that we cannot hammer those really responsible for the continuing state of conflict, such as the PLA, the MachineGun Evangelists, the Mullah Jarnails and the Marxist Comrade netas. And the corrupt Babus and bijnejpeople and polis on "our" side.

All in all, it is great that the Indian kids came back safe and sound. Becoz u c, a few days ago, the Other Side was celebrating:
Whole Convoy burnt, 18 of **THEM** killed, not one of **OUR** comrades even wounded. Superlative Special Comrades Mission!
. And now most of those herrows are dead, maybe some captured and hanging upside down somewhere. At the end of the day, whether they or anyone else liked it or not, they are/were Indian citizens, Indian-born.

What's interesting is the intercepts between the MSS/PLA intel and these insurgent groups. Shows that we've been eves dropping on their communications for some time and that the attack on the army convoy was at least indirectly connected to them. The Chinese need to feel a pinch too. Doubtful that a few of their guys were present in the camp otherwise this would have been a huge boon for us.

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore lauds army operation in Myanmar, says it is beginning.

Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore today lauded the Army operation in Myanmar and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had ordered "hot pursuit" in which two rebel camps were completely annihilated.

He said that the surgical strike inside Myanmar was an "unprecedented" and "extremelybold" step by the Government. Asserting that attacks on Indians are not acceptable anywhere, the Minister, a former colonel, said that based on effective intelligence, "we will carry out surgical strikes at the place and time of our own choosing".

Asked whether such attacks could be carried out in the western border, he said that "western disturbances will also be equally dealt with".
"Our PM ordered hot pursuit in which two camps were completely annihilated. While the army carried out the strike, helicopters were on standby," he said.

He said the operations today were a message to all such neighbours who harbour terror intentions."Friendship and zero tolerance will go hand in hand. This is a beginning. India is strong. This message should go to everyone," he said.

Stating that the Indian side suffered no casualties in this operation, he said the Army has strong capabilities and "it needed an equally strong leader to take such a bold decision. We will carry out such attacks".

The Minister's statement came after special forces of the army in coordination with the air force today carried out a surgical strike inside Myanmar, killing nearly 20 insurgents of the groups believed to be responsible for the deadly ambush in Manipur that killed 18 soldiers.

Elite commandos of the army went a few kilometers inside the Myanmar territory to destroy two camps of insurgents hiding there after
their attacks in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh last week by NSCN(K) and KYKL outfits.

more details from TOI today:

- NSA had camped in Manipur for 4 days to plan this. thats why he dropped off PM's BD trip..he has past experience in the region
- foreign secy had made a quiet visit to rangoon last week
- UAVs were used for recce
- Op started at 3am and lasted *13 hrs* so not a quick in and out thing, they mopped up and must have collected intel and any HNI prisoners..ground columns on our side could have done a anvil and hammer thing with the Mi35s and UAVs looking out for bands of escapees
- our rangoon ambassador west across to formally inform the myanmar foreign ministry when it opened in the morning.

quite a bad omen for various bandits camped near out borders..some of the kamatipur and meghalaya bandits deserve a good smashing next. mostly they hide in india itself or contiguous area of bhutan and BD....we need to clean these serpents out.

Mi 35's cannot transport much, if there were 50+ targets on the ground, there would be a significant number of Paras on the ground to cut any one escaping the air assault. Unless it was primarily and air assault mission, but I would think not. What makes most sense is for both Mi 17 and Mi 35's to do their respective roles of tactical lift and tactical strike, to achieve this type of a mission with fire power, intelligence and sufficient assets on the ground.

I do not see how just mi 35's would do it? Any ideas, unless the paras crossed the border on ground.

My thought too. It seems like Doval's experience in that region came in handy. According to TOIlet, our intel operatives crossed border and came back with precise co-ordinates of the terror camps for the operation. We have built a solid base of informants in the north east over the decades. It's great to see India flex its muscles once in a while. It sucks to be a soft state.

Army, Assam Rifles kill 50 ‘ultras’

Devesh K. Pandey

print · T T
Operations come after death of 18 in Manipur ambush

In the aftermath of the Manipur ambush last week, Indian agencies said on Tuesday that the Army and the Assam Rifles killed over 50 insurgents in two operations along the India-Myanmar border in Nagaland and Manipur.

Top government sources said most of the killings took place in encounters in Ukhrul and Chandel districts of Manipur.

Along the Nagaland border, eight insurgents are believed to have been killed.

In another incident, three insurgents were reported killed as an improvised explosive device they were carrying went off.

“We are yet to receive the exact details of those killed in the encounters. Operations are still under way,” said a Home Ministry official.

Giving a briefing, the Army said they had engaged two groups of insurgents and “inflicted significant casualties”.

“Specific and credible intelligence was received about further attacks that were being planned within our territory… Early this morning, the Indian Army engaged two separate groups of insurgents along the Indo-Myanmar border at two locations, along the Nagaland and Manipur borders,” Major-General Ranbir Singh, Additional Director-General, Military Operations, said.

Though Army officials refused to give specific details, informed sources said special forces were likely to have been deployed.

While Army officials declined to say if the operations were carried out across the border in Myanmar, they said they were in “communication with Myanmar authorities on this matter” and expect such cooperation in the “future too”.

Intelligence agencies believe that 25-27 militants had carried out the Manipur ambush, which claimed the lives of 18 soldiers from the 6 Dogra regiment. After the attack, they headed to hideouts in Myanmar.

21 Para SF was the first SF unit to be created outside of first three SF units of Indian Army i.e. 1, 9 and 10 Para Commando. 21 Maratha Light Infantry (MLI) was chosen for mass conversion to SF. Now you know where that 'Wagh-Nakha' (means Tiger Claw) comes from! Same weapon used by Shivaji Maharaj against Afzal Khan.

Unit permanent location is in Jorhat, Assam. It helps that Jorhat is also an IAF base with An-32 squadron. Part of the initial plan to have specialized unit for jungle warfare.

Also here for some background: note pessimistic tone about coordination

Those killed were mostly in their 20s and 30s, hailing from Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Their bodies will be sent home in the next couple of days.

“The Khaplang group wants to show its relevance after two senior rebels broke away. When it broke off a ceasefire with the Centre in March, the breakaway group inked a pact with the government. Security forces have been attacked over six times since,” said a senior official.
Former army chief General Deepak Kapoor said there could be no kneejerk reaction to the deadly ambush as the army had refined its Northeast strategy over a long period of time. “Some drills and procedures may not have been appropriately followed. Such things can happen if you let your guard down,” he added.

Didn't NaMo just return from Indi-Chini Bhai-Bhai?

Quote:
Days after the deadly attack in Manipur’s Chandel district, it is now emerging that India gave Myanmar phone intercepts and location details of at least two officials from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), who were reportedly in touch with the top leadership of insurgent group, NSCN-Khaplang, suspected to be behind the killing of 18 Armymen. Officials said the information was shared two months ago, and that the matter would be taken up with Myanmar again. According to a senior government official, the insurgent group, which abrogated its ceasefire pact with the Centre in March this year, did so following instructions from the PLA. The meeting was held in New Delhi on April 10-11. It was attended by Ministry of External Affairs, Union Home Ministry and officials from Myanmar. “We held a meeting with our Myanmar counterparts in April this year and handed over intercepts of phone conversations between two PLA officials and Khaplang, the leader of the insurgent group. In the said intercept, the Chinese PLA official asks SS Khaplang about his health, tells him to relax and asks him to learn Chinese language,” a senior government official said. Sources said that officials also took up the issue of “opium cultivation and trade” being done by insurgent groups like NSCN-Khaplang, ULFA and KLO in Myanmar’s Kachin province. “The insurgent groups are running transport business and opium trade in Myanmar and we have even handed over their photographs,” the official said, quoting intelligence inputs and adding that leader of the hardline faction of ULFA, Paresh Baruah, also convinced Khaplang to snap the ceasefire agreement with Centre. He further claimed that Baruah, too, was acting on instructions from some senior officials of PLA. Khaplang and Baruah are believed to often shuttle between Taga (Myanmar) and Ruili and Kunming — both in China’s Yunnan province — and are reportedly in regular touch with Chinese officials. Intelligence inputs also suggested that a former officer of PLA has set up a factory of assault rifles in Myanmar’s Kachin province and a majority of the arms produced there are being supplied to militants of the Northeast, including NSCN-Khaplang. The official said that the arms manufacturing unit is located at Pangwa, along the Sino-Myanmarese border, and has been set up by a former PLA officer, Muk Yan Pau Huan, along with former leader of Burmese Communist Party, Tin Ying.

Don't know why he is in vanvas after 2014 elections.

If the news of employing Mi-35 is correct, do people realize what it means?

It means that few Mi-35 (anywhere between 4 to 6 - 2/3 per target) were AIR-LIFTED all the way from western sector for this Ops. These assets are based in Suratgarh and Pathankot for anti-armor operations. It means some C-17 crews have been keeping a busy schedule. But most important, the decision to hit back came pretty quickly - no more than 48 hours after the ambush on 6 Dogra troops. It ain't a piece of cake to move these beasts from one part of the country to another.

Hats off to SF, but if you think there is any message for the western border you must be smoking strong stuff.

Indian forces have crossed the Myanmar (and Bhutan) border on several occasions in the past, only not announced it to the world via an "eloquent" Rajyavardhan Rathore!

it was announced, "to the world", by Addl. DGMO Maj.Gen Ranbir Singh (not Randhir as I mentioned earlier). Retd. Col. Rathore only articulated the policy in his way. And there's no concern, once a cross border op is carried out into Pakistan, the Indian Express will duly report that it was done many times before too.
