Highlights

At least four terrorists have attacked an army installation in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri, which is near the Line of Control. A gun battle is on.

The terrorists, suspected to be fidayeen or a suicide squad, attacked the camp at around 4 am and entered the administrative area, officials said.

The camp is on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway in the Baramulla district, about 70 km from state capital Srinagar.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has postponed a visit to Russia and the US that was to have started today, news agency PTI reported.

In January this year, six terrorists who had infiltrated into India through the border entered the high security Pathankot airbase in Punjab and opened fire.

In an operation that lasted nearly three days, seven military personnel were killed.

Pakistani attacks nowadays can be considered as Special Forces commando attacks. The jihadis who come in are trained to use all the equipment and techniques of spl forces, but on top of that they are ready to be killed - deliberately with no plans for evacuation. Hence the attacks are deadly

Two Soldiers have been killed 12 hurt in attack on Army installation in Uri

Police sources said a group of militants believed to be suicidal, at least three in number, stormed an Army installation close to the 12th Brigade Headquarters at Uri in the early hours. The headquarters is nearly 100 km from Srinagar and is responsible for guarding the Line of Control in the Uri sector.

"Intense firing coupled with explosions is going on in the camp," the sources said, adding that efforts were on to neutralise the attackers.

The Army has rushed Para commandos and also sent in helicopters to zero in on the militants hiding inside the installation.
An army spokesman said: "Terrorists targeted rear administrative echelons of the Army in Uri early morning today. Encounter is on… more details will be shared on clarity."

Taking out 17 soldiers is a grave escalation.

Modi will have to show spine and do what is required to impose an unacceptable penalty.

If the news it true, this is going to be Modi's most difficult foreign policy challenge so far.

He will have to withstand American pressure and make some sacrifices.

This is too big to ignore.

This is indeed huge.

I think India is going to have to strap itself in.

It's going to be a bumpy ride.

PMO will probably start by shelling known infiltration posts.

Then shift it south of LoC to IB and widen the envelope.

Simply move up the escalation later.

We will have to take the lead and force the PA to catch up.

Gen Hasnain says there was a specific intelligence input on this a few days ago. ( NDTV ). He also says there is typically minimum security around the rear of the battalion HQ
. There are apparently no walls and only a barbed fence around this place which was attacked.

They wouldn't have launched the attack otherwise.

Should be discussed in J and K or terrorism thread. no need for a separate one. Been a long time since the state suffered such a n attack but its not new.
But 17 dead is very painful. I couldn't bring myself to read the full article for a while.
Hoping that there is an appropriate amount of pain inflicted on Pakis for this.

I think shelling will start within 5-10 hrs. This is the safest opening and gives us flexibility to shift from LoC to IB. It will also buy us time to prepare a diplomatic response.

I strongly feel Modi should act without giving any Aar-Paar speeches. Just hit them back, randomly. Most of the inaction arises from the narrative: problem is too big and difficult to be solved with military action. Instead, the doctrine should be massive punitive action. Need for airforce and missiles makes a lot of sense. Brahmos is not yet a strategic weapon, consequently a vertically downward short on GHQ or at least brigade HQ makes a lot of sense.

PA gamed this.

They wouldn't have taken the initiative unless they thought it could be confined to the border areas.

I would be really surprised if the order hasn't gone out already.

This is retaliation for Baluchistan. We have already cut down diplomatic contacts.

First and foremost, RIP brave soldiers. Imagine whats going with their families now.

This is second attack at same spot. In Dec 2014, we lost 7 Army jawans & 4 policemen in Uri when piglets attacked it.This is the highest escalation for Modi Govt - clearly a response to Balochistan and recent India-Afghan parleys. This is typical Porki timing - with US busy in elections, they think they can escape International condemnation.

Extremely saddened by loss of 17 of our brave soldiers. RIP brave sons of India. In return we can only give you mourning and few days coverage on TV. Yes, some will remember you but most will forget soon. I am more saddened by what will follow. No punitive action will be taken. Some meaningless words will fly for some time and again situation will be back to square one. When and where will we stop accepting such losses??

Our mentality, reminds me of the hoards of wild buffalos. While they are grazing peacefully, some predator comes and kills and takes away one of their own, they run away for some time, afraid, confused, but soon enough they come back and start grazing like nothing happened. We act just like those cattle while celebrating some false stupid spirit in ourselves which enables us to stand back. Yes, we stand back, but we never fight back. Today, as an Indian I feel ashamed that we cannot promise these soldiers who gave their lives for us that they will be avenged and the real perpetrators will be punished severely.
