Even as we are discussing this, ToI says, Hafiz Saeed-led JuD rebrands under new name. I am now pretty sure that Hafiz Saeed's house arrest is *NOT* a Chinese operation.
Jamaat-ud-Dawa has rebranded under the new name of 'Tehreek Azadi Jammu and Kashmir', just days after its chief Hafiz Saeed was put under house arrest and a crackdown launched on the organisation's activities.

The Mumbai attack mastermind had indicated about a week before his arrest that he might launch Tehreek Azadi Jammu and Kashmir (TAJK) to "expedite the freedom of Kashmir".

The rebranding shows that Saeed had got a wind of the official plans and had already worked out how to resurface and survive after the clampdown on his ostensible network of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation (FIF).

Official sources confirmed that the two organisations have started activities under the name new of TAJK and were planning to organise events on February 5, which is observed as 'Kashmir Day' in Pakistan. The TAJK banners have been displayed in Lahore and other cities and towns.
The group is also planning to hold a big Kashmir conference on Sunday in Lahore after evening prayers.

The TAJK has reactivated its donations centres and ambulance services in different districts of Punjab, including Lahore, which is the hub of its activities.

Local media reported that even after the crackdown on their activities, the volunteers of Saeed's network on Friday actively participated in the rescue operation after a boat carrying about 100 passengers capsized in the Ravi river near Nankana Sahib town in Punjab.

A police official said law enforcement agencies were keeping a close eye on the activities of Saeed's network and appropriate action would be taken. :rotfl:

When practice of Mohammadden beliefs in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan cloisters away women, it is inevitable that male homosexual rape with paedophile overtones crops up.:

Boy raped: Two days on, police yet to make headway

This deviant behaviour is no one off event in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Similar incidents of paedophile homosexual rape have been reported over the past couple of years or so. Indeed I suspect that the incidents of this nature, by standards of prevalence of deviant behaviour, are quite widespread in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan making it the Homosexual Rape Capital of South Asia:

It seems that the Uyghurs are getting more and more restive possibly due to further Restrictions by the Chinese towards the Muslims in Xinjiang.

Migration and Inequality in Xinjiang: A Survey of Han and Uyghur Migrants in Urumqi

In comparing the Xinjiang Population Religious Content in 1945 it was Han 6.2% Uyghur 82% and Other Muslims 11.1%. In 2008 the Population Religious Content was Han 39.2%, Uyghur 46% and Other Muslims 14.7%.

IMO now the Han content should be approaching 50% and the Uyghur about 40%.

However it seems that the Uyghur Liberation Forces – with support from Cwapistani Terrorists - are increasing their Attacks on the Han Chinese.

As such the Chinese are putting more pressure in the Cwapistanis to eliminate the support from the Cwapistani Terrorists.

This could well be the reason for Chinese pressurizing the Cwapistanis to rein in Hafiz Saeed and other Terrorist Leaders.

India hints at more ‘surgical strikes’

Gen Bajwa says ready to give befitting response to aggression from across LoC; woman dies in Indian cross border shelling

NEW DELHI: The Indian government made it clear that it could not guarantee that surgical strikes won’t happen in future as any such action would depend on the situation prevailing at that time.

“Pakistan is our neighbouring country. If they correct themselves, it will be good, but if some terror attack takes place, we cannot guarantee that there won’t be a surgical strike in future. We don’t want, but if situation demands, there is no second way,” said Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, the Indian Express reported.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken this well thought-after decision in which all sat down together to explore the option. In an interview to CNN-News18, Singh said there was inputs that after carrying out terror strikes in Kashmir, terrorists return to the launching pads on the Line of Control. “Our soldiers went across the Line of Control and hit those launching pads and caused significant damages,” the home minister claimed.

Meanwhile, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa said that Pakistan Army is ready to give a befitting response to any aggression from across the border. He said that India was trying to divert the world attention from its atrocities against the Kashmiris by violating the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LOC) and the Working Boundary (WB). He stated this while visiting the Lahore Garrison on Friday.

On arrival, the COAS laid a wreath at the Yadgar-e-Shuhada. The COAS was briefed in detail about the operational preparedness and other matters at the corps headquarters (HQ) and the Pakistan Rangers Punjab Headquarters, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a news release here stated.

The COAS expressed his satisfaction over the operational readiness and appreciated the Punjab Rangers’ response to ongoing CeaseFire Violations (CFVs) along the Working Boundary (WB) by Indian troops.

Later, the COAS addressed officers and troops of the Lahore Garrison. Taking them on board about prevailing security environment, the COAS highlighted the challenges to the army. He said that Pakistan Army and Pakistan Rangers Punjab played an important role in reducing internal security threats as well as giving an effective response along the Working Boundary.

The COAS said that nation acknowledged and fully supported Pakistan Army’s contributions in the fight against terrorism and militancy.“We shall always come up to the expectations of the people of Pakistan who are our real strength,” he said.

Talking about the Indian provocations along the Line of Control (LOC) and WB, the COAS said that India was trying to divert the world’s attention from its atrocities against innocent Kashmiris in held Kashmir.

“Pak Army and Rangers are fully prepared for befitting response to any misadventure from across,” he pledged.Earlier on arrival, the COAS was received by Lt Gen Sadiq Ali, Commander Lahore Corps.

Meanwhile, Indian forces once again resorted to unprovoked firing across the Line of Control (LoC) demonstrating immense irresponsibility towards regional peace. One woman namely Sehrish Zahid was injured in the firing at Jadot Bahadur sector of Khuiratta. The woman was shifted to the CMH Kotli in serious condition. The Pakistani troops retaliated and silenced the enemy guns.

Peregrine ji,

The Uyghurs have remained subdued in the last six months or so. The reason why PA took action in North Waziristan (Zerb-e-Azb) was also due to (apart from the Peshawar Army School attack or the earlier Karachi Airport attack) the demands from China to eliminate IMU (Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan) from Pakistani territories because it was the IMU that was sheltering the ETIM.

Xi Jinping's fist visit to Xinjiang was marred by Uyghur separatists, knife-wielding ETIM jihadis killed dozens in Kunming Railway Station and an SUV carrying Uyghurs exploded in Tienanmen Square right under the benign face of Mao with smoke billowing for some time, especially with Gen. Kiyani visiting there on the very same day on his 'farewell visit'.

The Chinese traced all these to Pakistan, demanded stern action and read the riot act. The incoming Raheel had no choice.

IMO, that is all done & dusted now.

Hafiz Saeed or Masood Azhar was never involved with the ETIM. The PA saw to it that its pro-Sarkari terrorists never got entangled with China. The 'bad Taliban' like the Ghazi brothers of Lal Masjid or TTP were. That's why China created so many blocks against Hafiz Saeed from coming under 1267 sanctions and continues to offer stiff resistance on behalf of Masood Azhar.

IMO, China wants to be friendly with LeT & JeM. It does not want them also to extend any help to ETIM. Unlike TTP, Hafiz Saeed's LeT is a far more formidable organization. They also come handy in terror operations against India. So, China stands to gain from a genial relationship with them, a task facilitated by the PA.

PoK locals take to streets against Pakistan's atrocities

ISLAMABAD: Anti Pakistan protests have been taking place across Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) for weeks now, even as Islamabad on Sunday observes the annual Kashmir Solidarity Day in support of the Kashmiri people.

Enraged at Pakistan's high handedness and denial of basic human rights in the held region, the PoK residents took to the streets to express their ire at the corridors of power in Islamabad.

PoK residents claimed that the Pakistani government, via its intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and administration, is committing atrocities on innocent citizens.

The demonstrators further alleged that there is no existence of civil liberty and fundamental rights in PoK, as the ISI is calling all the shots in the administration.

Those who don't agree with Pakistan's occupation are being persecuted and tortured and authorities are muzzling the voice of people and curbing basic right of freedom of expression, asserted the protesters.

Journalists, bloggers, civil rights activists all are targeted for speaking and exposing Pakistan's real face to the world.

An equally dismal situation prevails in Gilgit Baltistan, where recently there was a massive crackdown on journalists.

In PoK's Gilgit, protests against crackdown by Pakistani security forces

Meanwhile, in his message for Kashmir Day on Saturday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that Kashmir dispute is the oldest conflict present in United Nation Security Council while reiterating that the region cannot progress until and unless Kashmir dispute is not resolved.

Neelum-Jhelum

Capital suggestion
The Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project is a 28-year long story of gross incompetence and rampant corruption. This is also the story of Pakistan gross incompetence and rampant corruption. For the record, we have been working on the Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Plant for the past 28 years. For the record, the Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Plant’s total life is 30 years. Imagine: the ‘construction span almost equals the plant’s total life’.
PM Benazir Bhutto from December 1988 to August 1990: The project was approved on December 31, 1989 by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). The original PC-1 cost of the 969 MW power plant stood at Rs18 billion.
PM Shaukat Aziz from August 2004 to November 2007: Shaukat Aziz awarded the contract to Gezhouba Group of China (on May 29, 2015, the World Bank announced the “debarment of Gezhouba for a period of 18 months” and sent a letter of reprimand).
We started from Rs18 billion and have so far spent around Rs500 billion and the project is yet not complete. At Rs500 billion it is more than $5 million per MW when countries around us are doing the same at under $2 million per MW. Who would really be able to afford the electricity produced by Neelum-Jhelum?
Yes, NAB claims that it has “initiated an inquiry”. And yes, there are other projects like the Nandipur Power Project and the new Islamabad Airport. To be certain, not all of it is corruption. The Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project is a 28-year long story of gross incompetence and rampant corruption. And that, unfortunately, is also the story of Pakistan.

Pak-India talks on cards to end stalemate on dams
ISLAMABAD: With a view to end the ongoing stalemate between two nuclear countries over resolution of hydropower issues, the World Bank has stepped up its efforts to soon arrange a meeting between Pakistan and India at secretary level for developing consensus in the light of Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) on mechanism for resolution of ‘faulty designs’ of 300MW Kishenganga and 850MW Ratle hydropower projects.
Under the IWT 1960, World Bank, the broker of the Treaty, is not allowed to pick up any procedure of the two enshrined in the Treaty on its own to resolve issue or dispute unless parties to the dispute agree on one mechanism of the two that include the constitution of neutral expert and court of arbitration.

Pakistan is confident of managing its rising debt obligations to China as the world’s second-largest economy boosts investment in the South Asia nation by about 20 percent.

Pakistan will be able to handle repayments of Chinese soft loans to the government and businesses, which are part of a more than $50 billion of projects under the so-called China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, or CPEC, Planning and National Reforms Minister Ahsan Iqbal said in an interview in the capital, Islamabad.

Rising debt levels in the $271 billion economy, a drop in export earnings and a widening current-account gap have raised concerns about the government’s ability to pay the obligations. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s government is betting the investment on roads, ports and power plants will boost growth and generate enough revenue to repay borrowings.

U.S. scholars urge a tough stance on Pak - The Hindu
A group of U.S experts have urged the Donald Trump administration to take a tough line towards Pakistan and stop “viewing and portraying Pakistan as an ally”.

“The new U.S. administration should recognise that Pakistan is not an American ally”, said a report by the experts, which called for “a new U.S. approach to Pakistan”, one that involves enforcing conditions for aid, without cutting ties.

Lisa Curtis, Senior Research Fellow, Asian Studies Center, The Heritage Foundation and Husain Haqqani, Director South & Central Asia, Hudson Institute, were the co-chairs of the panel.

“Thinking of Pakistan as an ally will continue to create problems... At the same time, Pakistan is an important country that is willing to cooperate occasionally and partially with the United States,” the report said. The experts urged the Trump administration to work closely with China to rein in Pakistani support for terrorism. “The U.S. must lead efforts, including at multilateral forums, to sanction Pakistani terrorist groups and individuals. In particular, Washington must seek to work more closely with China, which shares concerns about the presence of terrorist groups in the region and the threat they pose to the proposed China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

While China will avoid steps that embarrass Pakistani leaders or that significantly skew the two countries’ historically close ties, Beijing may be willing to work with Washington behind the scenes to press Pakistan to crack down on terrorists within its territory. Gulf Arab countries, too, must be encouraged to press Pakistan to change its direction,” they argued in the report.

Donald Trump should levy costs on Pakistan for perpetuating terror in India: US think tanks

WASHINGTON: The US should "levy costs" on Pakistan for perpetuating terrorism in India and Afghanistan and must quickly formulate a new approach toward the country to prevent it from using terror for foreign policy ends, top US think-tanks have recommended to the Trump administration.

"For too long, the US has given Pakistan a pass on its support for some terrorist groups based in Pakistan, including those used against India. The US squandered a valuable opportunity in the aftermath of 9/11 and the 2001-2002 India-Pakistani military crisis to alter the Pakistani military's fundamental calculations on the use of terrorism for foreign policy ends," said the report prepared by eminent South Asia experts from nearly 10 top American think tanks.

"The objective of the Trump administration's policy toward Pakistan must be to make it more and more costly for Pakistani leaders to employ a strategy of supporting terrorist proxies to achieve regional strategic goals," said the report titled 'A New US Approach to Pakistan: Enforcing Aid Conditions without Cutting Ties', which would be formally released on Friday.

"There should be no ambiguity that the US considers Pakistan's strategy of supporting terrorist proxies to achieve regional strategic advantage as a threat to US interests. US policy must also pay attention to non-proliferation goals while dealing with Pakistan," it said.

"Pakistani military leaders continue to support terror terrorist groups that attack India in an effort to keep it off balance and to draw international mediation into the dispute with India over Kashmir," said the report.

"Pakistan's use of terrorist groups as part of its security and foreign policy is a function of its obsession with India, which it perceives as an existential threat. From an outside perspective, Pakistan's paranoia regarding India is unfounded," it said.

"Pakistan's seemingly unconstrained expansion of its nuclear arsenal, particularly the development of tactical nuclear weapons and extended-range missile systems, also remains a cause for concern, especially with regard to India," said the report co-authored by Lisa Curtis from The Heritage Foundation and Husain Haqqani, the former Pakistan Ambassador to the US, who is now with The Hudson Institute.

With India-Pakistan tensions on the rise, the report recommends that the Trump administration must formulate a new policy approach toward Pakistan quickly.

The report, which is believed to have become part of the internal deliberations of President Donald Trump's administration, on what to do with Pakistan says as a first step, the US must warn Pakistan that its status as a Major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA) is in serious jeopardy.

The report said Pakistan never changed its policy of supporting certain militant groups that fight Afghan and coalition forces, making it impossible for the US to achieve its objective of keeping Afghanistan from reverting to a safe haven for international terrorism.

"The US should no longer sacrifice its anti-terrorism principles in the region for the sake of pursuing an 'even-handed' South Asia policy, but rather should levy costs on Pakistan for policies that help perpetuate terrorism in the region. In particular, US officials must break the habit of trying to balance policies toward India and Pakistan and should instead pursue shared mutual interests with each.

"At the same time, the US should be modest about its ability to bridge what divides India and Pakistan," the report recommends.

"Unless Pakistan takes immediate steps to demonstrate that it fully shares US counterterrorism objectives, the US will revoke its MNNA status within six months," it said.

"Present to Pakistan a list of calibrated actions for ending its support to the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani Network, and make clear that failure to make substantial progress on these steps could eventually result in Pakistan's designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism," it recommends.

"If Pakistan does not make progress on the above steps, the US should consider compiling a list of Pakistani military and Inter-Services Intelligence officials, current and former, who are known to have facilitated acts of terrorism-- including supporting the Afghan Taliban and the the Haqqani network -- and barring them from travel to the US," the report said.

Running into 18-pages and titled 'A New US Approach to Pakistan: Enforcing Aid Conditions without Cutting Ties,' the report was along with Curtis and Haqqani was prepared by Col (retd) John Gill (National Defense University), Anish Goel (New America), Polly Nayak (Independent Consultant), Aparna Pande Hudson Institute), Bruce Riedel (Brookings Institution), David S Sedney (Center for Strategic and International Studies) and Marvin Weinbaum (Middle East Institute).

Pakistan, India talks’ resumption likely

Image

ISLAMABAD: Two interesting developments in the subcontinent over the weekend have raised hope of an early rapprochement between Pakistan and India, and a resumption of their stalled dialogue. One relates to the possible appointment of Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit as foreign secretary. The second was the meeting Basit’s Indian counterpart, Gautam Bambawale, had with Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

Something more to the reported internal report prepared by Lisa Curtis, Haqqani et al.

Pakistan military supports terror groups against India: report - PTI
Pakistan’s military continues to support terrorist groups that attack India to keep it “off balance” and draws international mediation into dispute over Kashmir, according to a report by a group of eminent South Asian experts from 10 major American think tanks.

As per the report titled ‘A New US Approach to Pakistan: Enforcing Aid Conditions without Cutting Ties’ which will be released here on Friday, Pakistan’s military has often disrupted nascent peace efforts pursued by Indian and Pakistani civilian rulers, most notably in 1999 during the Kargil war.

“Pakistani military leaders continue to support terrorist groups that attack India in an effort to keep it off balance and to draw international mediation into the dispute with India over Kashmir,” said the report.

“Pakistan’s use of terrorist groups as part of its security and foreign policy is a function of its obsession with India, which it perceives as an existential threat. From an outside perspective, Pakistan’s paranoia regarding India is unfounded,” it said.

The report said while India may be unwilling to renegotiate Kashmir’s territorial status, numerous Indian leaders have tried to reach a modus vivendi with Pakistan.

Pakistan never changed its policy of supporting certain militant groups that fight Afghan and coalition forces, making it impossible for the US to achieve its objective of keeping Afghanistan from reverting to a safe haven for international terrorism, it said.

“Pakistan’s seemingly unconstrained expansion of its nuclear arsenal, particularly the development of tactical nuclear weapons and extended-range missile systems, also remains a cause for concern, especially with regard to India,” said the report
co-authored by Lisa Curtis from The Heritage Foundation and Husain Haqqani, the former Pakistan Ambassador to the US, who is now with The Hudson Institute.

Among other members of the report are Col (retd.) John Gill, Professor from National Defense University; Anish Goel, from New America; Bruce Riedel from Brookings Institution; David S Sedney, Center for Strategic and International Studies; and Marvin Weinbaum from, Middle East Institute.

The US clearly recognises that Pakistan’s support for the Afghan Taliban, the Haqqani network and other terrorist groups is not the sole reason for Afghanistan’s security challenges.

However, the other problems become insurmountable when the principal insurgent groups enjoy safe havens in Pakistan, the report said.

Pakistan’s tolerance for terror groups also undermines the country itself, corroding its stability and civilian governance and damaging its investment climate, as well as inflicting death and injury on thousands of its own innocent citizens, it said.

Note the irony?

Sethi briefs intl cricketers on Lahore security arrangements for PSL final
Pakistan Super League (PSL) officials on Tuesday briefed international cricket players about security arrangements for the tournament's final match scheduled to be held in Lahore next month.
The meeting was held in Dubai
Additionally we are also having internationally reputed security consultants who will to travel to Dubai in the coming days to allay the doubts and fears of the players
:rotfl:

Plan B:
Sethi has reiterated on several occasions that a special draft may be held for the PSL final so that leagues could select players who agree to play in Lahore
If all else fails, temporarily name the stadium in Dubai as "LaWhory". Fits the bill for DooBai's social life.

The US moves the UN to ban JEM Chief Masood Azhar. China opposes
Trump-Nikki Haley moving the pieces in place...

Somehow, I get the feeling that the beginning of the end of pakistan as a nation state are in motion all over.

If I were a Pakistani Army Officer, I would be very very careful and read the Geneva Convention laws on human rights.

To doubly reassure the players, they will be taken on a bus via the exact same route that the Sri Lankan players took on a certain very eventful day not too long ago.
Hell, Sethi saab could even arrange for a helicopter ride out of the stadium for the players during this trial run, just to see the beauty of Lawhore from the air. A trial run flight drectly from Gaddafi stadium to Allama Iqball International will 400%ly reassure everyone that adequate sequirty ij in place.

Pakistan's Falah-e-insaniyat foundation has promised to help by providing its members to maintain due excitement and thrill during this trial run

Saudi Father Reprimands Son's sinking into Islamic Terrorism

Taliban movement was born in ‘plagued’ Pakistan: Saudi Arabia

The kingdom deported 39,000 Pakistanis, accuses national of several criminal activates

RIYADH: In the past four months, Saudi Arabia deported about 39,000 Pakistanis from the Kingdom for violating the rules of residence and work, Saudi Gazette reported on Tuesday, quoting informed security sources as saying.

They said that multiple Pakistanis were jailed for a number of crimes, like drug trafficking, thefts, forgery and physical assault. Against this backdrop, Abdullah Al-Sadoun, chairman of the security committee of the Shoura Council, called for ‘thoroughly scrutinising’ the Pakistanis before they are recruited for work in the Kingdom.

“Pakistan itself is plagued with ‘terrorism’ due to its close proximity with Afghanistan. The Taliban movement was itself born in Pakistan,” he said.

The sources also stated that a number of Pakistani nationals were allegedly involved in some ‘terrorist’ actions - orchestrated by Daesh - is a cause of public and societal worry.

He asked for closer coordination with the concerned authorities in Pakistan to thoroughly check those coming to work in the Kingdom due to the involvement of a number of Pakistanis in security issues, the report said.

Sadoun said the political and religious inclinations of the Pakistanis coming to work in the Kingdom should be known to both sides before they are recruited for work.

Fighter jets escort PIA plane to UK airport over ‘security threat’

LONDON: The Pakistan International Airline (PIA) aircraft intercepted and escorted by fighter jets to Stansted airport, northeast of London, was diverted because of a “vague security threat”, the airline said on Tuesday.

“UK authorities received some vague security threat through an anonymous phone call regarding PIA’s Lahore-Heathrow flight PK-757 before its landing at Heathrow,” PIA spokesperson Danyal Gilani said in a statement.

“As per their standard procedures the aircraft was diverted to Stansted airport. Security clearance is underway.”

Gilani said all passengers on-board were safe and being looked after by PIA’s local management.

“Passengers will be provided surface transport to London. For the return flight efforts are underway to ensure least inconvenience to passengers.”

Earlier, British police said the plane was escorted because of a disruptive passenger.

“This is not believed to be a hijack situation or terror matter,” Essex Police said in a statement. “The plane is currently at the airport and officers are making enquiries.”

Six-nation talks: Pakistan, India to come face to face in Moscow
Eat oIur Heart Out, Another Grand Victory By Islamic Pakistan over Kuffar
ISLAMABAD: Russia, joined by China, is set to host six-nation talks this month on Afghanistan in an unprecedented development where arch-rival Pakistan and India are also invited to discuss options for seeking a peaceful end to the lingering unrest in the war-torn country. The talks involving host Russia, China, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan and India are scheduled to be held in Moscow in mid-February, according to the Russian media following talks between Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Afghan counterpart Salahuddin Rabbani on Tuesday. The United States, a major stakeholder, however, has not been invited to the meeting in what appears to be significant move suggesting that both Russia and China are now seeking a regional solution to the Afghan problem. However, Russian state media quoting a senior diplomat said US could join the six-nation talks once the new administration there determines what they are planning to do in Afghanistan. US President Donald Trump has yet to announce his policy on Afghanistan as he is currently embroiled in domestic issues particularly after his controversial executive order banning nationals from seven Muslim majority countries to travel to the US.What is significant of the Moscow talks is that both Pakistan and India will join other regional countries to discuss the future of Afghanistan. Although, Islamabad and New Delhi are part of Heart of Asia Istanbul initiative, this is the first time India has been invited to talks exclusively focused on seeking the revival of peace talks between the Afghan Taliban and the government.Pakistan has always opposed India’s role in Afghan affairs. The opposition stems from fears that Indian intelligence agencies have been using Afghan soil to create instability in Pakistan. New Delhi, on the other hand, accused Islamabad of supporting the Afghan Taliban to further its interests.Given divergent interests as well as current strain in ties, it is not clear how Pakistan and India will come together on the issue of Afghanistan. While Russia, China, Pakistan and Iran are all in favour of direct talks with the Afghan Taliban, India is reluctant to support such a move fearing that this will provide legitimacy to the insurgents.Speaking at a joint news conference with his Afghan counterpart, Lavrov said most of the countries confirmed their participation. “We are expecting that our partners will be represented at a high level.” he said.He reiterated Moscow’s stance that “Taliban must be included in a constructive dialogue” to help find a solution to halt worsening violence in the war-ravaged nation at a time the Islamic State group has expanded its presence. The support to peace efforts by two key international players is seen as diplomatic victory for Pakistan.

Last year, the security forces had foiled a terrorist operation in which two Pakistanis, a Syrian and a Sudanese were held for plotting to explode Al-Jawhara Stadium in Jeddah where more than 60,000 spectators were gathered to watch a soccer match between the national teams of the Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates. They were planning to use a booby trapped truck loaded with 400 kg of explosives to undertake the terror attack, the report said.

Ego and Nandipur

THE ill-fated Nandipur power plant finally has an operator, but the good news will not last long. With an 80pc hike in the operational cost granted to the Chinese company that will now assume responsibility for keeping the plant running, one is hard-pressed to figure out the rationale for pursuing completion of this project on such a high-priority basis. That has been the story of this project from the day this government took office and announced that it would complete it at any cost. Finding a party to operate the plant without a blowout in its costs has been the challenge, and now the government is in the position of seeking a review of its tariff so it can meet its new, vastly elevated, operation and maintenance expenditure. A new slogan is being born in Pakistan as more ego-based projects such as Nandipur advance towards commercial operations: if at first you don’t succeed, ask the Chinese.

There was a time in the early 1990s when the government of Nawaz Sharif was caricatured for its propensity to privatise everything. Whatever the state could not do itself, it handed over to the market. That track record gave us a mixed legacy. Privatisation helped bring about a communications revolution in the country as the state monopoly was broken, but failed to bring about a similar revolution in banking and finance. Now we have a new approach. Whatever we cannot manage ourselves, we hand over to the Chinese. Today, Chinese companies are operating our stock exchange, picking up the garbage from the streets of our largest city, and building roads in places where we failed to build them for decades. One wonders what is next. If a population of 200m cannot pick up its own garbage or run its own power infrastructure, can they really expect somebody else to do it for them without ever seeing a bill? Foreign investment is a healthy sign for any economy, and it is amply obvious that there are many projects that will never see the light of day until a foreign partner steps in to execute them. What is sad beyond measure is the fact that we can make an egotistical decision to complete the construction of a power plant, but cannot muster the skill needed to run it afterwards. That is where ego-based decisions get you.

Telling point: the presence of fighter jets escorting the airliner. This wouldn't have been normally done unless the Brits had reason to believe that someone had taken over the cockpit.

Members of Rochdale child sex grooming gang facing deportation to Pakistan

Four members of the Rochdale child sex abuse gang are facing deportation after losing an appeal to remain in the UK.

Ringleader Shabir Ahmed and Adil Khan, Qari Abdul Rauf and Abdul Aziz were among nine gang members jailed in 2012 for grooming girls as young as 13 with drink and drugs.

They had challenged Government moves to strip them of their British citizenship.

But on Thursday, the Upper Tribunal of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber rejected their appeal.

It means the four men, all originally from Pakistan, could be removed from the UK - though the legal battle is expected to take some time.

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk has called for the men to be deported to Pakistan "as soon as possible".

He said: "We welcome many people coming to the UK, to contribute, but if they break the law then they should lose their right to live here.

"Foreign-born criminals should not be able to hide behind human rights laws to avoid deportation."

Ahmed, who is serving a 22-year jail sentence for offences including rape, wrote a letter to the European Court Of Human Rights last year claiming his convictions were a conspiracy to "scapegoat" Muslims.

Handing down today's judgment, Mr Justice McCloskey, said the cases were "of some notoriety", and described the men's crimes as "shocking, brutal and repulsive".

He dismissed claims concerning human rights and arguments by three of the men that the Government had failed in a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of their children.

The judge also rejected a ground of appeal that the Home Office action amounted to a "disproportionate interference" with the men's rights as EU citizens.

The latest ruling does not mean the end of the matter, as the four men can apply for permission to appeal against the tribunal's decision.

Applications can only be made on a question of law, and permission is granted in less than 10% of cases.

While Ahmed remains in custody, the other three have been released on licence.

Khan, Rauf and Aziz were convicted of conspiracy and trafficking for sexual exploitation charges.

US general calls for review of relationship with Pakistan
The top US commander in Afghanistan said on Thursday that there was a need for a "holistic review" of the relationship with Pakistan, echoing longstanding Washington concerns that the Haqqani network, a militant group, enjoys sanctuary in areas along the Afghan border."Our complex relationship with Pakistan is best assessed through a holistic review," Army General John Nicholson, who leads US and international forces in Afghanistan, told the Senate Armed Services Committee. The United States has cut both military and economic aid to Pakistan sharply in recent years, owing to frustration believed to be among a growing number of officials with regards to what they claim is Pakistan's support for the Taliban in Afghanistan.Nicholson said he needed several thousand more international troops in order to break a stalemate in the long war with Taliban insurgents, signalling the matter may soon be put before President Donald Trump.Nicholson said he still had enough US troops to carry out counter-terrorism missions against Al Qaeda and other militant targets, but not enough to properly advise Afghan forces on the ground."We have a shortfall of a few thousand," said the US commander. He added those forces could both be drawn from US forces as well as from allies.Nicholson noted that Trump's defence secretary, Jim Mattis, would soon speak with allies and suggested Mattis might visit Afghanistan in the coming weeks.Afghan government forces control no more than two-thirds of national territory, and have struggled to contain the Taliban insurgency since the bulk of Nato soldiers withdrew at the end of 2014.A number of provincial capitals have been under pressure from the Taliban while Afghan forces have been suffering high casualty rates, with more than 5,500 killed in the first eight months of 2016.

They should be deported after having served out their entire sentence. Else, it will be another sham detention in Pakistan (like Hafiz Saeed).

These a..holes are sexual offenders of the worst kind. I am not sure what the Britshits mean by 'released on licence' for this sort of licentious behavior. With this kind of dhimmitude, the Pakis and the Britshits are made for each other.

Forget India, profit from ‘quiet rise’ of Pakistan: Barron’s Asia

ISLAMABAD: Investors should forget India and instead profit from the ‘quiet rise’ of Pakistan along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Barron’s Asia said.

In an article, America’s financial magazine advised investors where profit is to be had through stock investments.

It pitched Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as the places to be, saying the trio is enjoying fast-paced growth, embracing reforms and look set to enjoy a demographic dividend over the long term.

“Forget India. Investors looking for the next big thing should look to its South Asia neighbors instead – Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka,” Barron’s Asia said.

According to the article, the three countries with a combined 390 million people represent what Morgan Stanley chief global strategist Ruchir Sharma calls “the quiet rise of South Asia” as opposed to India which has been “flattered by spasms of hype for years”.

“A substantially higher economic growth rate than in many other economies globally, coupled with fantastic demographics that will continue supporting growth for many years ahead,” East Capital fund manager Adrian Pop told Barron’s Asia.

The article mentions that Pakistan is the flag-bearer of positive changes taking place in the South Asian nations.

Inflation is under control, the budget deficit has been reduced and, more importantly, terrorism finally appears to be on the back-foot, given more assertive action by the army.

This along with Chinese investment in the transportation and energy sectors will be crucial to higher growth.

“More power capacity is key for Pakistan to move to an even higher economic growth rate,” said Pop. In December, the Pakistan Stock Exchange sold 40 percent stake to a consortium of Chinese investors.

The Karachi stock index is up by about 50 percent since the start of last year, propelled by index compiler MSCI’s decision to bump up the country to the emerging markets status.

Bangladesh benefits from a growing working age population and rising labor costs elsewhere in Asia. Garment manufacturing for western clothing companies has increasingly moved from China to places like Bangladesh, where wages are lower.

I wonder who financed the Article? It qualifies for the Humour Thread!:rotfl:
