Snippet about INS Shardul from MoD release:

INS Shardul is a Landing Ship Tank (Large) of the Indian Navy whose primary role is to transport troops, vehicles, armaments and accomplish all objectives of an amphibious operation which primarily includes landing of combat equipment and personnel to an Amphibious Objective Area. INS Shardul has the capability to launch and recover Marine Commandos through sea as well as by helicopters. In addition, the ship can act as a ‘Hospital Ship’ with facilities provided in containerised form as well as a ‘Fleet Tanker’ for limited mission/ exercise. The ship is routinely deployed with the First Training Squadron and is responsible for the ab-initio sea training of Young Officers of Indian Navy.

For the task of patrolling and other flag bearing exercises off the islands in IOR what you need is a fleet of small multirole corvettes. The have a better sensor suite, performance and weapons to handle a gamut of situations. INS Shardul, is ill suited for such a policing roles, IMO.

India set to join Malacca patrol group
Three of the 4 nations okay with Delhi joining Malacca Straits Patrol
Aiming to get a bigger toe-hold on the economically and strategically vital Straits of Malacca, India is on the verge of joining four other countries which collectively patrol the narrow straits — a water body between two land masses — east of its own Andaman Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal.
The Straits of Malacca are so important that almost half of the world’s total annual seaborne trade by volume and 70 per cent of oil imports of China, South Korea and Japan pass through this narrow water body that connects the Indian Ocean with the Pacific.
In numbers about 1.10 lakh merchant ships, oil and gas cargos sail annually through the straits. Around 40 per cent of India-bound cargo sails through these.
The existing Malacca Straits Patrol (MSP) framework has four partners — Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore (the water body is through their territory) and Thailand, which is just outside the western edge of the straits.
The Andaman Nicobar islands are also around 100 km from the western edge. New Delhi’s argument is that it should be part of the MSP since it has the responsibility to secure the sea lane of communication (SLOC) west of the Malacca. All ships passing through Malacca pass south of the Andaman Islands. At present, Indian Navy uses its fleet of reconnaissance planes over the Malacca and has its warships patrolling the SLOC west of Malacca. It separately has an agreement with these four countries to share data of merchant shipping, but that is all.
Sources confirmed to The Tribune that three of the four countries are okay with India joining the MSP and the fourth may come around soon to promote cooperation on seas.
Joining the MSP will mean information of any movement will be with New Delhi in real time. The MSP includes a Sea Patrol, it has an ‘Eyes-in-the-Sky’ programme that is a combined maritime air patrol, as well as the Intelligence Exchange Group. The MSP has a real-time information-sharing on suspicious contacts or incidents. The MSP is coordinated by high-end technology that keeps the flow of trade going and also keeps an eye on military platforms. The MSP has its own Monitoring and Action Agencies (MAAs). The MSP started in 2004.

IN has been hit badly by the delay or rather non delivery of NOPVs by reliance and CTS by ABG. Both were prestigious contracts given to private yards.

Instead of shardul it could have been an OPV at least if not a 'proper' warship.

At least 1 sukanya class OPV has been pulled into first training squadron on lack of CTS so there was a double whammy on patrol ships.

Showing the Flag is a psychological endeavor. The first impression of the Shardul leaves much to be desired. This really should be a Godavari or Brahmaputra at least if we can't spare a Shivalik or Talwar or even Kolkata. I mean how many of these flag bearing exercises with phoreners are there?

Considering we had a helo overhead, wonder why did we not board the vessel first??? Do all the vessels deployed for anti piracy ops not carry the Indian equivalent to VBSS teams??

I think we had already done the job of scaring away the pirates. We only missed a PR opportunity of boarding the ship which we have done N number of times

It is not just the LSTs which are taking on the patrolling roster:

http://sainiksamachar.nic.in/englisharc ... 12/h11.htm
INS 'Ratnagiri' was the sixth ship of her type and upon commissioning, the ship formed part of 19 Mine Counter Measure (MCM) Squadron to be based at Mumbai. The ship was named after the coastal city of Ratnagiri located in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, popular for its fishing community.

The ship was originally fitted with an array of weapons and sensors which included two AK230 CIWS system, two RBU 1200 rocket launchers and a MCM sonar suite. The ship was retrofitted with klein side Scan sonar and clip-on influence sweeps in the recent past to buttress her MCM role. The ship, was also fully equipped to operate as a patrol platform, a role that changing security imperatives had brought about. The ship, commanded by Cdr Amit Nagpal, was manned by a crew of five officers and 70 sailors.
One would wonder why we need OPVs, or whether there were too many. In an economic sense an OPV can probably generate the maximum sea hours per rupee.

^^^Yes, I wonder where were the OPVs during all this? The new Saryu class are pretty impressive vessels. They would have shown the flag quite nicely. But minesweepers and landingcraft? Not so much.

An OPV like Sukanya has added benefit if being able to carry a ASW chopper and TAS. This makes them very potent. Also they can be configured to light frigates if required, something MCMV's or other smaller chips can't do.

2 are deployed with ANC so they would be out in the Malacca straits or thereabouts. There is only one on the western coast so it might have been out on a patrol elsewhere..

The US is looking towards re-arming its LCS frigates in view of increased threats, our NOPVs are substantially underarmed and can be reconfigured to carry more ASW sensors and weaponry, apart from a limited SAM/SSM capability. These are large warships and in any crisis must be able to hunt for enemy subs esp. within the 200nm zone ,allowing other assets of the fleet to carry our more vital ops.

These pakis were part of a fleet that had rounded up a Indian fishing fleet and were taking them to jail in kraachi.
In the dark one fishing boats engine failed and the paki speedboat collided with it drowning 3 and floating these 2.

Where was the hurry for ICG to hand them over to PN so quickly? The sailors could have been interned for a couple of days before a handing over.

Hours later Cdr. Jadhav was handed a death sentence

We could have used them for bargaining while we slapped charges from passport act to SUA to waging war against India. Maybe even allowed IN to take custody in some hell hole

^^ Agree....unusual haste in letting them off but since not privy to what was actually going on there in the background( maybe some tactical negotiations with both the ICG and PN ships facing off each other as per the pics), will never know what prompted the hurry

What sort of boats PN CG uses that gets drown when hit by a fishing trawler.

The rescue is good PR for ICG , Good for optics against a hostile neighbour

The capsized craft was either a RHIB or a FRP boat at best. Poor skill and training by PMSA sailors in any case.

We did not negotiate or trade them for release of our fishermen. It was on their own accord.

It bothers me to think that Pakis are always looking for a way to harm us, while we are always trying to be forgiving elder brother

INS Sharadha escorts hijacked Dhow out of Somali waters. All's well that ends well but we should look out for and execute a special op to rescue our sailors one of these days.

Cant wait to see ALH in one such photo ....

PS: Sukanya class OPVs are really elegant.

http://m.deccanherald.com/articles.php? ... yy790.dpuf
The Indian Navy today took control of a dhow with 10 crew members, nearly two weeks after the vessel was hijacked by pirates off the island of Socotra in the Arabian sea.

The Indian Navy accepted the Dhow 'Al-Kausar' from the Mayor of Hobyo in Somalia and escorted it into international waters and onward towards its next destination.

The Indian registered dhow was hijacked off the island of Socotra on April 1 and then the vessel was taken to the port of Hobyo, on the eastern coast of Somalia. The 10 crew members were captured and held by pirates.

Following the incident, the Navy had redeployed its ship, operating in the Gulf of Aden for Anti-Piracy Patrol, to the east coast of Somalia to monitor the ongoing situation and remain standby for any other contingency operations, the Navy said in a statement.

"In the interim, negotiations commenced between the owner and the hijackers for the safe release of the vessel, its cargo and crew. All inter-government agencies maintained a close watch and effective coordination during the progress of negotiations.

"Based on the outcome of the negotiations, the dhow along with its cargo and two crew members were released on 11 Apr 17, and the balance eight crew were released on Apr 12," it said.

The Navy said Somalian Security Forces also provided support and assistance during this operation with armed guards being positioned on the dhow off Hobyo harbour as well as search parties undertaking operations to locate the balance crew ashore

I'm a little fuzzy on where exactly the drama with the pakis and our fishermen happened? As in, where exactly did the pakis take our fishermen into custody? If it was in their territorial waters, how did our Coast guard reach there to rescue them? If it was outside their territorial waters, weren't they violating international law by arresting (kidnapping?) our fishermen? Or worse, was it in our waters?

WM-18 is not a CIWS and any automation will lay waste to multi-story space which is desperately needed on such ships.

Take RBU as an example on every Navy ships. Every time they place two in the front, they eat away a 16 cell Brahmos or 32 cell LRSAMs.

Hence for the intent and purpose WS-18 is the best fit, short range saturation weapon.

WM18 is exactly the right weapon for a Landing ship.. Can blast any seaward facing bunkers/defences to smithereens before landing troops on a contested beach.
