Great observation. From Sanskrit Nukkad:

Cultural and spiritual hazard of increasing affluence and power:

उदये सविता रक्तो रक्तश्चास्तमये तथा ।
सम्पत्तौ च विपत्तौ च महतामेकरूपता॥

"In rising, the sun is crimson, and crimson also is the setting sun.
Increasing affluence and calamity both are in a way similar in form."

North Korea's attendance at a weekend summit on China's new Silk Road could affect the participation of other countries, casting a shadow over what is Beijing's biggest diplomatic event of 2017.

Two sources with knowledge of the situation said the U.S. embassy in Beijing had submitted a diplomatic note to China's foreign ministry, saying that inviting North Korea sent the wrong message at a time when the world was trying to pressure Pyongyang over its repeated missile and nuclear tests.

China's Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside of working hours in China. The ministry said on Tuesday that North Korea would send a delegation to the summit but gave no other details.

The Manchurian CandidatePresident rewrites history
Mr. Moon’s order was largely symbolic. The three history textbooks prepared by Ms. Park’s government have been so unpopular that only one of the country’s roughly 5,500 middle and high schools has adopted one of them. But even that school was temporarily barred from using the book after parents filed a lawsuit.
In 2015, Ms. Park, the daughter of the military dictator Park Chung-hee, announced that all middle and high schools would be required to abandon the privately published textbooks they used and adopt the new government-issued books beginning this year. She said the “left-leaning” private textbooks tainted the minds of young children. In what was billed as one of her signature policies, her government worked with a secretly selected panel of scholars to write new textbooks that it said would instill students with a sense of patriotism.
Chinese rappers rap THAAD
warns South Korea: “How many times do I hadda warn you, my lovely little neighbor boy?”
“This time, kid, you going too far,” the rap continues in English, later switching to Chinese. “What’s Thaad — terminal what? It ain’t gonna terminate violence.” The video, which had roughly 50,000 views on YouTube by Friday afternoon, features the Sichuan-based group CD Rev, whose members say they are influenced by hip-hop stars like Eminem and Dr. Dre. The group has also produced music videos about China’s claims in the contested South China Sea and Mao’s legacy.

No one even interested!!! What a sad end to a nice flare-up! Latest is that the WHOTUS opened their mouths and said: "Russians are probably not pleased" at the NoKo mijjile bissing into the sea 60m from Vladivostok, and Russia promptly said, first yeah, v r putting air defense on alert because there may not only ATTACKS (as in American) but also mijjiles falling into sea. Plus, hey, the mijjile was going AWAY from Russia, no worries for us"
This is awful!

New member of the ding-dong family unveiled.Grange-haired baboon wants even more sanctions imposed.Like what? NoKo appears to be self-sufficient in ding-dong production, testing 25+ every year, suspected material help from the Persians who are building lots of the little NoKo midget subs to muddy the Gulf waters. Perhaps the best policy is to simply ignore the Young "Un"....he loves the ":oxygen of publicity",but then so does the orange-hired baboon!

Putin speaks:
Speaking in China, Putin called for a peaceful solution to the ongoing tensions on the Korean peninsula, Russia's Sputnik news agency reported.
"I would like to confirm that we are categorically against the expansion of the club of nuclear states, including through the Korean Peninsula," Putin told reporters. "We are against it and consider it counterproductive, damaging, dangerous," he said.
But in comments that appeared aimed at the US, he said that "intimidating (North Korea) is unacceptable."
For its part, North Korea said the missile test was in response to the nuclear dangers and threats posed by the US and its followers.

er... Actually, for people in the US at least, the issue IS "getting after the ISIS", not sitting with ur thumb up ur musharraf when u have the info to prevent attacks and track down the terrorists as BO and his merry gang were doing. The bugger who claimed that he could do NOTHING to stop ISIS selling a million barrels a day of oil with a 500-mile desert road-based supply link. Probably because the satellite and drone images showing the truck convoys were CLASSIFIED so that they could not be passed on to the Air force C-130 crews.

Pathetic. SDOTUS should be fired en masse.
The United States would consider talks with North Korea if it halts all nuclear and ballistic missile tests, Washington's envoy to the United Nations said on Tuesday, as the UN Security Council weighed new sanctions on Pyongyang.
"We are willing to talk but not until we see a total stop of the nuclear process and of any test there," the US envoy Nikki Haley told reporters ahead of a closed-door Security Council meeting.
Washington and Beijing - the North's sole diplomatic and military ally - are working on a new resolution targeting Pyongyang, she added.
"That's what we are working on now. We don't have it done yet," she said. "Absolutely, sanctions is something that we are looking at and we are going to continue to see where that takes us."

Colorized images from Korean-American War of 1950

Something for the Paki madarssa curriculum to consider:
SEOUL — Any day of the week, the North Korean propaganda machine can be relied upon to spew out anti-American vitriol using some formulation of “imperialist” and “aggressor” and “hostile.”

The Kim family has kept a tight grip on North Korea for some seven decades by perpetuating the idea that the Americans are out to get them. From the earliest age, North Korean children are taught “cunning American wolves” — illustrated by fair-haired, pale-skinned men with huge noses — want to kill them.

Kindergartens and child-care centers are decorated with animals holding grenades and machine guns. Cartoons show plucky squirrel soldiers (North Koreans) triumphing over the cunning wolves (Americans).

“North Koreans live in a war mentality, and this anti-American propaganda is war-time propaganda,” said Tatiana Gabroussenko, an expert in North Korean propaganda who teaches at Korea University in Seoul...
The Korean Peninsula, previously occupied by Japan, was divided at the end of World War II. Dean Rusk — an Army colonel at the time, who went on to become secretary of state — got a map and basically drew a line across at the 38th parallel. To the Americans’ surprise, the Soviet Union agreed to the line, and the communist-backed North and the American-backed South were established in 1948 as a “temporary measure.”

“The majority of those killed were in the North, which had half of the population of the South.”
The United States dropped 635,000 tons of bombs in Korea, not counting the 32,557 tons of napalm, Bruce Cumings, a University of Chicago professor who’s written several books on North Korea, wrote in “The Korean War: A History.” This compared with 503,000 tons in the entire Pacific theater in World War II.

“If we keep on tearing the place apart, we can make it a most unpopular affair for the North Koreans,” Defense Secretary Robert Lovett said after the napalm and aerial bombing campaigns of 1950 and 1951, according to Cumings. “We ought to go right ahead,” Lovett said.

Rusk said the United States bombed “everything that moved in North Korea, every brick standing on top of another.” After running low on urban targets, U.S. bombers destroyed hydroelectric and irrigation dams in the later stages of the war, flooding farmland and destroying crops, former Post correspondent Blaine Harden wrote on these pages in 2015.

..scorched-earth policy of the retreating UN forces,” Armstrong of (People's Republic of ) Columbia wrote

Also see the pic there of the NoKo family looking at a video from their daughter in SoKo. Either they have excellent Internet service, better than I have in Ulan Bator, or they are pretty liberal about allowing smartphones with videos. Defector's family don't seem to be in the Gulag either.

North Korea’s military actions ‘a recipe for disaster’, says top US Pacific commander
Admiral Harry Harris warns lecture audience in Tokyo, 'Every test Kim Jong-un makes takes country one step closer to being able to deliver a nuclear-equipped missile anywhere in the world'

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inspects the long-range strategic ballistic rocket Hwasong-12 (Mars-12) KCNA/Reuters
The top US military officer in the Pacific has said that North Korea's recent military actions are “a recipe for a disaster” and warned against a sense of complacency in the face of increasing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Admiral Harry Harris Jr. made the remarks at a lecture for a Tokyo think tank after meeting with Japanese leaders that he said focused on North Korea's missile and nuclear programmes.

North Korea test-launched a missile on Sunday that many experts believe could be its most advanced yet, flying higher and longer than any previous missile.

“Combining nuclear warheads with ballistic technology in the hands of a volatile leader like Kim Jong-un is a recipe for a disaster,” Harris said. “Kim Jong-un is not afraid to fail in public and every test he makes is a success because it takes North Korea one step closer to being able to deliver a nuclear-equipped missile anywhere in the world.”

The missile on Sunday was deliberately fired on a “lofted” trajectory — reaching more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles), which is higher than satellites in low Earth orbit — to test re-entry capabilities and place its “splash zone” in the open Pacific.

Harris, head of the United States Pacific Command, based in Hawaii, said North Korea is “closer to being able to deliver a nuclear-equipped missile anywhere in the world” and called for further coordination between the US, Japan and South Korea to deal with the threat.

He also obliquely criticised China for throwing up obstacles to the freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, where Beijing has constructed island bases in the disputed waters, saying “we should fly, be able to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows.”

While in Tokyo, Harris met Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and Defense Minister Tomomi Inada.

Just to point out the obvious: If NoKo can send a rocket to 2000km it can also knock down most US spy satellites, the International Space Station and other gizmos. Just rise up gently in front of the orbital path of a satellite and do :P like the Chinese did to their own satellite. Kinetic energy will do the rest.

Fairly ominous: second aircraft carrier group (Ronald Reagan) near NoKo.That's about the strength that was put in the Pakistan Ocean to bomb Afghanistan. Plus bombers from Diego Garcia.
Now the bombers can come from Guam or Phillippines. Fighter escort / HARMs from the carriers.

Medium-range ballistic missile: 500km into Sea of Japan

Just a wild guess: Jhapad coming out of the blue when POTUS is still on MidEast tour. "President Rushes Back To Deal With Situation" etc. Limited action, with say 130 SLCMs and ALCMs taking out the major IRBM launch sites. With implicit warning: Next one through ventilator shaft at Comlade Mao Ail Laid Shertel. Also, don't touch those artillery triggers or else.

Ratest Ding-Dong a gleat success ! All hail Big Brother,Young "Outstanding" Leader Kim Jong Un!
Western analysts say that Kim now has perfected his 400-600km BM,which can reach ll of japan, perhaps some island territories of the US,but yet to demonstrate a perfected ICBM that can hit the US.This ding-dong though will now enter mass production, free delivery to SoKo,Japan,Okinawa and Guam too(?),perhaps even Pearl Harbour!

Can you enumerate what the US got?

PRC got a lot of "respect" from Trump, including sending a mission to their Belt and Road Forum (BARF) extravaganza. Also, Trump declared (in a direct reversal of his campaign platform) that PRC is "not a currency manipulator".

Thus, since this thread opened,

1) PRC has won explicit US approval for OBOR .

2) PRC has extracted a US declaration that Beijing is a fair trading partner, not a "currency manipulator" or any such thing.

3) PRC has been enjoying a period of less USN pressure and "freedom of navigation" ops in the SCS, which they can sell domestically as a "win" and a demonstration that US "pivot to Asia" is crumbling.

4) PRC ALSO got a pro-Beijing, pro-Pyongyang, anti-US regime elected in SoKo which will make the THAAD deployment problematic for the USA. This was partially achieved as an electoral reaction by South Koreans to Trump's belligerent (but eventually empty) posturing.

So Beijing definitely got what it wants, on many counts.

Pyongyang continued to test its missiles all through the so-called "crisis". No one can conclusively prove that they were "deterred" by any of Trump's posturing.

However, I do not see what the US got that was any different from what they had before. US deep state (which wanted US-China status quo) has managed to preserve relative normalcy in US-China trade ties. But they never wanted a war over NoKo in any case. Net net, this is a setback for US interests by conceding numerous Chinese interests.

If this is the point where the whole business fizzles out, then the entire exercise by Trump was sound and fury, signifying nothing. Brutus fulmen with a lot of energy (and credibility) wasted. Trump should realize that the world is not Manhattan high-society, where people forget today that your bluster of yesterday amounted to zilch. Governments in the region are just going to yawn and  at USN CBGs from now on.
