Should HH Dalai Lama be made India's next President?

Postby RajeshA » 25 Apr 2017 14:53

China has become even more aggressive towards Arunachal Pradesh, making claims upon claims. Isn't it about time that India responded in kind?!

Stapled visa issue with China still unresolved: Sushma Swaraj

China has no right to rename our cities, Arunachal part of India: Naidu

Maoists kill 25 CRPF men in Chhattisgarh jungle ambush

This issue has nothing to do with the person of Tenzin Gyatso, but rather with the title he holds, that of 14th Dalai Lama. Making Dalai Lama our next President would not only allow India to reclaim leadership over Buddhism, thereby improving our relations with Southeast Asia even further, but also allow us to reassert our claims on Tawang, rest of Arunachal Pradesh and long term claims over our holy places like Mt. Kailash and Lake Mansarover especially and wider Tibet generally depending on how aggressive China becomes in the future. This is a good investment for the future.

Considering that the election of our next President is just around the corner I deemed it relevant to bring up this issue. The poll runs till 26th July, 2017 when the next President is due for being sworn in.

I hope the moderators allow the poll the stay. Thanking you in advance

I voted No! For 2 reasons.

1. I would like HH Dalai Lama to first unequivocally state that Aksai Chin is a part of India as is Arunachal Pradesh (both of which would be claimed by the Tibetan Govt. in exile).
2. The idea of having a Dharmic Indic Guru as president is appealing indeed. (There are several current gurus who would be vying for the same position; however, the idea of President as Commander in Chief of all Indian armed forces and the guardian of the Constitution must be kept foremost in mind. Therefore, it must be someone with experience in polity and statecraft.

That depends how one sees the frontiers of India. Tibet is culturally Indian. Even Dalai Lama has said that India has more rights over Tibet than China.

At this moment, however precedence and all that stuff, I think is secondary and bureaucratic-minded. Far more important is for us to arm ourselves with rightful claims over the Himalayas, its rivers and Tibet, based on which we can orient our national security strategy to meet the Chinese threat.

A more daring possibility is if the Tibetan Govt. in Exile signs the Instrument of Accession to India.

Let's not forget that Dalai Lama, besides being the spiritual leader of Tibetans was actually also the political leader of Tibet, so the idea of Commander-in-Chief may not be all that alien to the office of the Dalai Lama, and since it is only a formal title, it should also be manageable for the current Dalai Lama.

This whole arrangement of making the present Dalai Lama as India's next President is basically to strengthen India's position on claims. China is not going to let go of any lands in the foreseeable future. It is we who need all the cards we can get.

Also I am not sure if Tibet really had any claims over Aksai Chin or whether it was considered part of Kashmir even by the Tibetan Government, possibly as part of British-Tibetan agreement.

Forget about his birth place. An incarnation of Avalokiteswara, the Bodhisatwa of Compassion is great for a religious leader, but not suitable for a commander in chief who may have to wage war and cause the death of many. Compassion and killing will not go together. I am not sure if he has been good for the Tibetans for the short run. I am sorry to say this, as I admire the man.

We will be honoured to have a president of such statute.
Indian or Not he is and will be the greatest leader India can get.
Any day better than anyone we had since Independence.

During UPA's time, MMS was just the face, with Madam holding all the power. It is a common model used everywhere.

The President of India is most needed when there seems to be political instability in the country, with some rag-tag coalition or some minority govt. in power, otherwise it is mostly a position where one sits back politically and becomes the face of the state and gives speeches of inspiration.

Practically speaking, it is the PM who is the de-facto Commander-in-Chief.

In times of foreseeable political stability in India, position of President is not going to be politically that challenging. So it is a moment in history, where one can afford to have a less politically active or politically-suave President.

Point is that neither the Dalai Lama nor the Tibetans are going to get much out of the arrangement, since it is not as if Tibet is going to be freed in the foreseeable future. This arrangement is however a golden opportunity for India to establish our claims viz-a-viz China. Something we may never get again.

RajeshA, What advantage do we accrue by having him as Prez for 5 years other than getting into spat with China.
What after 5 years ?

This is a dangerous idea, not to be pursued further. Topic closed.
