GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
Opening a thread to track GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis. Some 10-12 hours from now, India is going to make history again.
As all new endeavors should start with a homage to the holy cow., here is the image to start this thread:
All sub-second details on raakit ki garjana can be tracked here.
Again this is specific to GSLV-Mk III. Once the launch program completes., we can close this thread.

Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
Is that bullock cart pic genuine? Why was a cart used for such a sensitive cargo?
Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
Yes., the pic is genuine.
Satellites are 'sensitive' cargo., but they still need to be put through shake/bake and other testing. The rocket launches are not smooth., there are severe vibrations. For the satellite in qstn above in the pic., requirement was to test out the vibration while it is relaying information. Putting it in a iron cage would have made a faraday's cage and they did not want to design another test platform.
The bullock cart was *the* ideal test platform.

Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
No,
They had a jeep drawn metallic cart to take the satellite, but the gold foil started to discharge static electricity with the metal cart. There was fear that this may affect the satellite itself.
Some intelligent guy got a bullock cart from the nearby villlage.
That is the real reason for the satellite on the bullock cart

Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
Read about it a long time back, IIRC, we were denied the tech to do the vibration testing, therefore we used our desi jugaad for that.

If that picture is correct..........Gagan wrote:No,

That bullock cart axle is by itself a source of static electricity.
Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
Exactly., and R. Aravamudan talks about it in his book.chetak wrote:If that picture is correct..........Gagan wrote:No,

Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
On top of it I read somewhere that only after PSLV launch we got real parameters of heat caused by friction and the payload fairing was subsequently optimized. It was over-engineered since we did not know what I call it as "heat flux".Karthik S wrote:Read about it a long time back, IIRC, we were denied the tech to do the vibration testing, therefore we used our desi jugaad for that.
Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
can anyone id the two elders taking notes ? could be a project external review board. the speaker is APJK
Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
whether vertical stack or horizontal liquid fuel tractor, those days moving from VAB to pad was simpler

The bald head near camera could be UR Rao, not sure
Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
it looks like a old nasaish pic - strong, straight backed, stern in details ... the "right stuff" as hollywood/media labelled.
the B&W makes it more so.

This is my fav pic.
Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
^^ Taken by a French photographer as per the book by Shri.Aravamudan in his book ( author is the guy in the vest).
The photographer was given free hand in pre-security days and was personal friend of Shri. Sarabhai and he used to click these candid pics. Most of these old historical now well known pics are his.

Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
^^ One thing i really appreciated upon reading the book is that any amount of namaskar to the stalwarts like Sarabhai and Bhabha wont be enough as these 2 men literally hand held India into the big league by their personal efforts and contacts.
He mentions the episode of where they were bunched with TSP engineers during ToT for sounding rockets at NASA when ISRO was being setup. Amrikis were doing usual equal-equal and helping both exactly similarly and yet TSP-ians just fell away depite being in same level till 1970s due to lack of guidance which these giants liek Sarabhai, Bhabha etc provided for our agencies

Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
yes they could easily have found comfortable tenured positions in top western univs/govt labs instead of slogging it out on a low tech base here and building institutions...only a small subset of scientists can build institutions.

this may not be first time this being posted here. ( may be moved to appropriate thread if need be)

Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
A little OT here, but there are many people who are amazing in their own ways and have contributed towards building up on the present state of technical expertise in India. I know a few folks who have refused lucrative offers from Soviet Union (yes), Germany, France and of course Massa to continue to serve in GoI Labs onlee to retire with a meagre pension and a Maruti Alto (or at the max Hyundai Santro) as the onlee 4-wheeler. I work closely on occasional basis with one such gentlemen and although I don't agree with his reasoning (which for me borders on irrational with too much emotional component), I do applaud & respect his commitment to serve the Motherland in face of temptation .
Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
Will the launch be covered by DD? I am asking this because PM is going to speak via video conferencing at IIT-Delhi SPICMACAY function at 5.15PM, guess his speech will be covered by DD.
Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
Live telecast from 16:55 IST on DD & webcast on ISRO website
Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
so page223 of that pdf reveals the french photographer friend of Sarabhai was none other than Henri cartier bresson!! he took the cycle photo per caption.
Re: GSLV-Mk III launch program/post-launch analysis
It is noticeable that combined knowledge pool of Gurus posting in Space, missile and math threads is richer then that of few other Asian and european countries combined. Most of the time it is Greek to me (being from Bio-chemical background). But no regret. Respect BR for that. Hats off guys. Continue.

Looking at the old photographs i am amazed as to how far we have come from where we were.

Blackboard, chalk piece, spool tape recorder, pen and paper, etc. etc.
The dedication of those early ISRO pioneers is really admirable to have relentlessly persevered under trying circumstances.
