Terroristan - 29 September 2017

Back to policy basics

Despite all my efforts, I must admit my inability in spotting the underlying logic of Pakistan’s Afghan policy. If the objectives of the policy were to check the influence of India in Afghanistan, then we need to admit that the influence has increased from what it was in the 1980s.

If the objectives were to have a superior position in bilateral relations, in that case too the policy has yielded no fruits. Afghanistan has more anger and resentment against Pakistan than it did in the 1970s. Pakistan’s influence is waning in Afghanistan to the degree that people like Gulbaddin Hekmatyar are now unable to utter anything positive about Pakistan. Lastly, if the objectives of Pakistan’s Afghan policy were to ensure that Afghanistan’s territory should not be used against Pakistan in that too the policy backfired. Compared to the 1970s the intensity and frequency of such violations from Afghanistan has increased. So if the policy failed to achieve any of its stated or projected objectives, why does it continue?

Equally unfortunate and illogical is the story on the other side of the border. Afghanistan’s policy towards Pakistan has also backfired in many ways. If the objectives of Afghanistan in its ties with India were to force and dictate Pakistan, it is apparent that Afghanistan has failed. Rather, the country lost the support and cooperation of Pakistan. Every negative move from Afghanistan is paid in the same currency from Pakistan. By keeping a negative stance towards Pakistan, Afghanistan has not achieved any success in improving conditions for peace or in defeating the Taliban or even in rapprochement efforts with the Taliban. In fact, now, beside the Taliban, they have to face Isis as well.

Afghanistan used to blame Pakistan for its alleged support to militants; it has now added Russian and Iran to this list too. So, it is obvious that annoying Pakistan and getting closer to India did not bring much good to Afghanistan. In the end, we are faced with the same policy dilemma and question in Afghanistan too. If their policy towards Pakistan is defunct, why does it still continue?

Pakistan seems to be ignoring the fact that without a stable government in Afghanistan, no one there can ensure that its land will not be used against Pakistan. Afghanistan too seems to ignore the fact that any government in Afghanistan that establishes such love affairs with India would never find much support in Pakistan. In the same way, policymakers at both sides of the border don’t see that Pakistan’s peace and stability is impossible without peace in Afghanistan – and vice versa. Pakistani policymakers do not realise that Afghanistan in its worst set of policies would never be as dangerous as India; and Afghan policymakers can’t see that even the most favoured relations with India cannot replace relations with Pakistan.

There are some attitude issues too. Pakistan is always ready to absorb pressure and policy responses from both the US and China. But when it comes to Afghanistan, Pakistan doesn’t allow a single bitter word without response. The same is the case with Afghanistan, which accepts bitter dictates from the US and even from Russia, the UK and Germany. At times, it seems that the Afghan leadership compromises their national interests, here and there, even in favour of Indian policy. But when it comes to Pakistan, every Afghan leader sees it as an insult to accommodate or compromise even on minor issues.

Both our countries need to adjust to each other in a mature manner. If we think that Afghanistan has worked against our interests many times, we should also accept the fact that the US has been far more fickle with us. Why have we never planned to retaliate on that? If we admit that Pakistan may have interfered in the internal affairs of Afghanistan, then our Afghan brothers must also ask themselves if any such interventions equal the meddling by the USSR and US. Why has the Afghan leadership never thought about the same policy response for Russia and the US that they have reserved for Pakistan? Vow! Now Terroristan considers itself as Equal to the USA & Russia!

Similarly, if Pakistan is upset that, despite the goodwill extended by it, Afghanistan has ended up establishing close relations with India, the story is the same in the case of Iran. But that doesn’t mean Pakistan tries to ensure a pro-Pakistani government in Iran. In this case too, the story is the same on the other side of the border. The Afghans say that Pakistan committed blunders in its Afghan policy that proved hazardous to Afghanistan, but then they also need to calculate the number of blunders from the USSR and US in their dealings with Afghanistan and the consequent tragedies for Afghanistan. If Russia and Iran are now seeing the Taliban as an asset, is that due to the Pakistan factor or because of US installations in Afghanistan? And, lastly, if it is about attitude, why is all condemnation reserved for Pakistan and none against others, like the US.

The fact really is that Pakistan has no policy for Afghanistan and Afghanistan has no policy for Pakistan. All we see is mere ‘responses’ and ‘adjustments’. Pakistan changes this so-called policy every day, as does Afghanistan. In Pakistan, if one policy on Afghanistan suits one institution or leader, it panics the other. Governments on both sides of the border are not free in policy formulation as they have to sustain and absorb a number of conflicting internal and external interests and pressures.

It is unfortunate that for the last 16 years Pakistan’s policy for Afghanistan has not been based on merit but seen through the lenses of the US. Afghanistan too has adopted the American perspective on Pakistan in the formulation of its Pakistan policy. Pakistan had been under the illusion that if its policy could win over the US, it would be accepted by Afghanistan as well. Afghanistan has also been careless in its moves regarding Pakistan, thinking that if anything were to go wrong, the US would be there to handle it. This led to a state of affairs where both neighbours constantly turned to the US for their complaints against each other. All this has now resulted in a complete disaster, with the US equally annoyed with both Pakistan and Afghanistan. US President Donald Trump has warned Pakistan while also distancing the US from its reconstruction pledge for Afghanistan.

All this points towards an even bigger disaster: that the US is now completely confused over Afghanistan. Pakistan and Afghanistan don’t have any meaningful policy on each other, and now the US too seems to lack one on either country. The Americans have no clear plan for Afghanistan; they are not clear on how to deal with the Taliban and they are confused on whether to stay on or leave Afghanistan. One thing is obvious: if no clear and real solution is planned and implemented in Afghanistan, the resultant disaster could be the disaster.

If any such thing happens it will not directly disturb the US, Iran, Russia or even China. But Afghanistan and Pakistan will definitely face its direct and unavoidable consequences. This is when Afghanistan and Pakistan need to sit together and understand that if Pakistan fails to ensure Afghanistan’s stability and Afghanistan fails to address Pakistan’s reservations, then both countries will face unimaginable loss. Traditional diplomatic tactics are useless in the current situation. Both countries must sit together and accept their wrongdoings. It will be even better if China helps the process – not as arbitrator but as guarantor. Now Terroristan wants Afghanistan to become its "God Brother" as China will be Godfather to both countries!

We can only hope that the leadership of both countries follow the path of reason, and refrain from cynicism, for the larger interests of both nations and for the millions of people residing in this region. One hopes that Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa’s visit to Kabul will help towards this new beginning.

Warning : Please don’t buy Terroristani origin packaged or ready to eat food at your local food store or super market.

Profiteers pushing Pakistan on verge of nutritional crisis

LAHORE: Pakistan is on the verge of a nutritional crisis at the hands of those profiteers, who are unscrupulously involved in large-scale food adulteration, wreaking long-term havoc on the lives and economies of unwitting consumers, experts said on Saturday.

“Dishonest producers use cheap fillers that are easily disguised in the spices/ingredients to increase the volume sold thereby cutting the cost of pure materials, and thereby increasing their ultimate profit margin on top of adding to the medical bills of consumers,” a researcher said speaking at a seminar on food adulteration.

The same speaker pointed out that consumers may be eating a dangerous dye, sawdust, soap stone, industrial starch, and aluminum foil and even horse-dung.

“The poorer segments of society are more likely to consume food tainted with brick dust, soap ingredients, textile dyes etc,” the speaker said.

Another expert explained that a food item was considered adulterated if it contained any added “poisonous or deleterious substance”, filth or unapproved food or color additives.

“It is also considered adulterated if any valuable constituent has been omitted or removed or substituted with another substance,” the expert said.

Also, he added, if any substance has been added to increase bulk or weight to conceal the inferiority of an item then it is also adulterated.

A food safety expert informed the seminar that some of the common adulterated foods are milk and milk products, wheat flour, edible oils, cereals, condiments (whole and ground), pulses, coffee, tea, confectionary, baking powder, nonalcoholic beverages, vinegar, chickpea powder, and curry powder.

“Alum and chalk are sometimes used to whiten the bread, while for stale flour, ammonium carbonate is added to disguise its sour taste,” the expert said.

He continued that mashed potatoes, sawdust and plaster of Paris were also used to increase the weight of the bread, while milk is adulterated with water, and indirectly by removing the cream.

“Cream is adulterated with gelatin and formaldehyde is employed as a preservative for it and butter is adulterated to an enormous extent with oleomargarine, a product of beef fat,” he added.

One of the speakers disclosed that coal-tar colors were also employed to adulterate food to a great deal.

“Pickles and canned vegetables are sometimes colored green with copper salts, butter is made yellower by a certain substance, while turmeric is used in mustard and some cereal preparations,” the speaker said.

An industry official divulged that in confectionery, dangerous colors, such as chrome yellow, Prussian blue, copper and arsenic compounds are employed, whereas artificial flavoring compounds are utilised in the concoction of fruit syrups, especially those used for soda water.

“Pure butter oil and ghee are also very rare in the market.

Dishonest traders use a host of ingredients – animal fat, palm oil, potato smash, and vegetable oil -- to make fake butter oil,” the speaker added.

He added that they even mix stearin oil, an ingredient of soap, with ghee to increase the proportion.

“The red chili powder used in the market is also adulterated. In most cases, the spices are mixed with brick dust.

Fine sawdust is also often mixed with cumin and other ground spices,” he said.

The experts were unanimous that this crisis-like situation calls for tougher monitoring to screen all food products for safety.

Saying that it was the only way towards a healthier nation, they also urged the health regulatory agencies to take fail-proof measures to crack down on the food adulteration in all its forms along with other such malpractices by legislating strict guidelines and laws.

PEREGRINE-JEE:

The Paki newspaper article omitted ( deliberately or inadvertently, who knows !) the main item which is the staple of Paki diets : Donkey Meat masquerading as Gosht ( ie beef) . The Paki press has been full of stories on this kind of meat for quite a bit of time . There were other stories of donkeys being imported from the "tallel than mountain fliend". Not sure if the purpose was " nutritional" ( if you know what I mean !) or as beast of burden ( until the domestic manufactured water powered car comes into the market ! ). Later on, these animals when they have "served their purpose" will come on the meat market

I seriously get the impression that the same bunch of guys take turns at dressing up as guards and burka-ed 'suspects' while playing scurity-scurity.
1. The "suspects" are not handcuffed or chained, with AKs and ammo on a table in front of them.
2. One of them stands with his arms across his chest, as if this was a family picnic
3. the armed guards have their guns pointed away and at the ground (asking for trouble)
4. No guards stand behind the "suspects" to prevent retaliation
5. What stops the "suspects" in disarming their guards?
6. Note how overfed the suspects look?

You are right. They took turns masquerading as "cops and robbers".

Pakistan demands $70 million from Indian cricket board as compensation
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has demanded an approximated $70 million from Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as compensation for not playing two “home” bilateral series, according to Press Trust of India (PTI).
The MoU contract with BCCI back in 2014 to play six bilateral series, starting with our home series, is yet to kick start. Secondly they have avoided playing us in bilateral series since 2008 although they have no issues playing against us in ICC events

Full Steam Ahead For The T.L.P - The New Kid On The( Paki Political ) Block :D

Election symbol allotted to Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has allotted the election symbol of ‘crane’ to the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) led by Khadim Hussain Rizvi.
The (good) TLP ( not to be "confused" with the (bad) TTP had forced its way into the red zone in Islamabad to stage a protest against conviction of Mumtaz Qadri, who was sent to the gallows for assassinating then Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer. Am sure that this would not have been possible without consent of "Deep State" !
In a related development, the interior ministry has opposed the registration of the Milli Muslim League (MML), which is believed to be a front for the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, as a political party.
“Ministry of Interior has taken up the issue with security agencies. While reply of [an] agency is awaited, the other agency has intimated that indulgence of proscribed and under observation organisations in political process with an aim to win legitimacy is a serious issue, thereby neutralising the gains of the National Action Plan. In view of the above, the registration of MML is not supported,” the ministry said in response to the ECP’s letter seeking clarifications from it over the issue of MML’s pending application for enlistment as a political party. After some "back and forth" with the "Boys", the Interior Ministry will do a volte face and issue a registration certificate !
In its response, a copy of which is available with Dawn, the interior ministry has said that the ministry of foreign affairs has recommended to the ministry of interior that Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) and Falah-i-lnsaniyat Foundation (FIF) are banned organisations under the Pakistan Security Council Act, 1948. The Financial Action Task Force has been informed repeatedly that these organisations are banned in Pakistan under the 1948 Act. After some "back and forth" with the "Boys", the Interior Foreign Ministry will do a volte face and give a new order to the Interior Ministry
According to ECP sources, the MML had applied for enlistment on Aug 9. The documents submitted with the ECP show Saifullah Khalid as the president of the party, Muzammil Hashmi as vice president, Fayyaz Ahmad as general secretary and Mohammad Haris as joint secretary. No mention of Hafiz  . MML president Khalid had admitted his ideological links with the JuD while recently addressing a press conference. The United States has offered a $10 million reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Hafiz Saeed. The US and India consider JuD to be a mere front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, the militant group blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks. But the JuD despite being under observation for years has no formal charge against it and denies any link to violence. The organisation is popular in the country for its charitable activities. And also for its Jihadi Activities

This occurred to me a week or two back but I kept forgetting to post. Just saw a video that brought it back.

Now a days it is bakistan that lodges protest with the Indian HC while earlier it was the reverse. Modi GOI has reversed the position. So instead of complaining it is hitting back where it hurts. Thus we have a situation where it is bakistan that is into *kadi ninda* kind of thing.

That was nicely done. The part I've bolded struck me in particular. Which arrested terrorist criminal does that, especially one who shortly should be expecting all sorts of bamboos up his posterior?

No that's more likely the pissed off stance of some cop wondering why he has to play the criminal for photo ops again, pancho.

Interior Minister of terroristan Ahson Iqbal (under whose interior ministry 'rangers' function under) disallowed to attend court proceedings against Nawaz Sharif by rangers who were posted as court security today.

he then issues this statement
"there can't be two chain of command for one department. It is either me or it is 'them'. If it isn't me who is in charge I will resign now.

The Wife Beater Wails Again in Delirium

The Nuclear Dimension
Even if Pakistan and the US are able to reconcile their divergent positions on Afghanistan, the emerging strategic alignments that will shape policies in Asia are unlikely to change. The US has chosen India as its major strategic partner in Asia to counter the rising power of China. The resulting escalation in the Indian threat to Pakistan’s security is either irrelevant for the US or part of its strategic plan to weaken Pakistan’s opposition to Indo-US regional domination. The recent visit of the US defence secretary to India has confirmed and reinforced their strategic alliance and intention to collaborate in Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s ability to resist Indian diktat and to disagree with America’s strategic design flows from one principal source: its nuclear and missile capabilities. Without this, Pakistan would have been attacked like Iraq or sanctioned like Iran. On the other hand, North Korea, despite its isolation, has been able to thumb its nose at America because of its demonstrated nuclear and missile prowess.

An Islamic nuclear power was always anathema for America and much of the Western world. The US worked ceaselessly — even when Pakistan was a close ally — to retard and reverse its nuclear and missile programmes. This endeavour has intensified since the emergence of the American alliance with India. Apart from the discriminatory technological and political restrictions it has long imposed against Pakistan’s strategic programmes, the US now demands that Pakistan unilaterally halt fissile material production and the development and deployment of short- and long-range nuclear-capable missiles. Meanwhile, it is actively assisting India in enlarging and modernising its nuclear arsenal, its missile and anti-ballistic missile capabilities, its air and naval forces, as well as satellite and space capabilities.

There are credible and not-so-secret reports that the US has formulated plans to seize or destroy Pakistan’s nuclear weapons in a crisis. American think tanks have concocted scenarios of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons falling into the hands of terrorists or, even more absurdly, of the Pakistan Army turning into an ‘extremist’ or ‘jihadi’ force. Indeed, such scary scenarios could be engineered as an excuse to execute the ‘seize or destroy’ plans.

Matters are more likely to come to a head in the event of another war between Pakistan and India. Kashmir is an ongoing dispute and a nuclear flashpoint. Every India-Pakistan war game confirms the likelihood of a rapid escalation of a conflict to the nuclear level due to the asymmetry in conventional forces. A war should thus be unthinkable. Yet, India’s political and military leaders continue to speak of ‘surgical strikes’ and a ‘limited’ war against Pakistan. If India does ever decide to go to war with Pakistan, it would have to first conduct a pre-emptive strike to eliminate Pakistan’s nuclear deterrence capabilities. Or, would the US be prepared to do so on India’s behalf? Pakistan must be prepared for both contingencies.

Islamabad must presume that in the course of its past (ill-considered) ‘cooperation’ with the US to enhance the ‘safety and security’ of Pakistan’s nuclear assets, the US has gained considerable intelligence about Pakistan’s strategic assets. However, Pakistani officials correctly discount America’s ability to seize Pakistan’s nuclear weapons. These are too many, and too widely dispersed and well protected, thus not amenable to any seizure or strike. But nuclear delivery systems are more difficult to hide and protect.

In a crisis, it is the delivery systems that will be the prime target of a pre-emptive strike. These are most likely to be detected when, in a crisis, they are being ‘mated’ with the separately stored warheads. Furthermore, as revealed during the current Korean drama, missile launches can be sabotaged by cyberattacks and other technical means.

In the emerging strategic scenario, nuclear deterrence is Pakistan’s ultimate assurance against external aggression and coercion.

Pakistan needs to take several measures so that the credibility of its nuclear deterrence is assured. One, the massive deployment of artillery and short-range missiles (à la North Korea) as the first line of conventional deterrence and defence against an Indian Cold Start attack. This would deter Indian attack and also raise the nuclear threshold. Two, the multiplication of long-, medium- and short-range nuclear-capable missiles to ensure the penetration of any ballistic missile defence systems that India deploys. Three, the continued production of fissile materials to provide warheads for the enlarged missile force.

Then, there is the need to ‘mate’ at least some warheads with delivery vehicles, their dispersal and disguise, or protection in hardened silos, to respond to a pre-emptive strike. Eventually, submarine-launched ballistic missiles could provide an assured second-strike capability. Five, the deployment of effective air defence systems plus a limited number of advanced (and expensive) anti-ballistic missile systems to protect command and control centres. Six, the development of offensive and defensive cyber-warfare capabilities.

Following this, Pakistan needs the acquisition and deployment of early-warning capabilities — satellites, surveillance aircraft and drones. In the meantime, Pakistan should utilise Chinese early warning capabilities. Lastly, greater integration and inter-operability with Chinese land, air and naval forces to enhance conventional and strategic deterrence, quickly and cheaply.

Once Pakistan can demonstrate the complete credibility of its nuclear deterrence posture, its offers to negotiate peace and security in South Asia and to resolve the Kashmir dispute may evoke a more positive response from both India and the US. Pakistan will then also be able to pursue its socioeconomic objectives free from the threats of external coercion, intervention and aggression.

Paki Paranoia

Pakistan planning to lay 135 km-long optic fibre cable to evade Indian surveillance?
Pakistan and China are expected to lay a 135 kilometre-long cross-border optical fibre network as part of the Long Term Plan (KTP) for the China Pakistan Economic Corridor project, Dawn reported on Sunday. The project, costing $44 million, is also driven by Pakistan’s fears of surveillance by Indian authorities in its communications network as much of the optical fibre network in Pakistan has been laid by a consortium of companies which includes Indian firms. There have been past reports on this subject as well !
Revealing details of the 21-page LTP document, Dawn reported that the network overhaul includes an upgraded communications framework that would constitute elements like fibre optic cables directly connecting Pakistan and China, submarine landing station to facilitate flow of internet traffic, digital TV et al.The two countries hope to finish the project by 2030. The project, according to the report, will also improve connectivity in Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan. These are the two areas where Chinese personnel are likely in considerable numbers !
At present, Pakistan internet connectivity with the outside world is dependent largely on undersea fibre optic cables. More importantly, the developers behind the current fibre optic network is a consortium of companies including Indian firms that are either partners or shareholders. :D
The report highlighted that the Chinese internet regulation model could also impede information access and freedom of expression to Pakistan nationals. The long term plan, to follow the "Chinese model" and stifle, among others the "active social media" in Pakiland !
Dawn reported that according to the LTP document, the new fibre optic network will start from Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County of China and cover 135 km to connect to Pakistan. From that point, the network will run through Khunjerab and subsequently to regions like Sust in Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad and Rawalpindi.India has maintained its opposition to the CPEC project and all its sub-projects as they pass through Pakistan occupied regions, including Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan.

Pakis be damned. My guess is that the F.O. cable from g'wadar to xinjiang is to protect chini intelligence and connectivity from prying eyes (Indian, western and Russky). G'wadar is (will be) a major chini naval port, strategically positioned for keeping an eye on the gulf transit and western military assets.

Altaf "Qawwal" Hussain in thick soup!

FIA registers case against Altaf Hussain for terror financing
Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founder Altaf Hussain on charges of terror financing and money laundering
the funds received by the non-profit organisation Khidmat-e-Khalq Foundation (KKF) were transferred to the accounts of different MQM members and business organisations and were used to "purchase weapons of destruction, cash smuggling to United Kingdom (UK) for Hussain, terrorist activities in Pakistan and funds during election period
In 2016, the British investigative agency Scotland Yard had dropped the money laundering case against the MQM-L leader due to insufficient evidence.
The complaint requests the FIA to impose a ban on MQM for being a "foreign aided political party, involved in misrepresentation of facts and money laundering".
Wow. If the partition had not happened, all this would have been India's headache. Thank god for djinnah.

Nawaz Bhai is rapidly becoming the Qaid-e-Azam of Punjab

Sindh has two Qaid-e-Azams already - Zardari Saab' and Altaf Hussain Saab'
Pashtunistan had better resolve their differences and someone there has to emerge as the leader of the masses - Who knows the Haqqanis might have ambitions beyond being puppets of the ISI.

Senate elections are scheduled for the March 2018 timeframe. There will be intense political activity on the streets.
Please book ringside seats, have your beer and popcorn ready! This is going to be one hell of a ride folks.

Apparently non-jihadi-training tourism in Pakistan is up.

Taking a break from his job as an analyst at Jefferies in London, Cameron’s vacation last month underscores the rekindling of Pakistan’s tourism industry after a sustained military security crack-down, with annual arrivals more than tripling since 2013.

Euromonitor International Trash
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... ail-market
Pakistan’s burgeoning youth and their freewheeling attitude toward rising incomes have turned the nation into the world's fastest growing retail market.

The market is predicted to expand 8.2 percent per annum through 2016-2021 as disposable income has doubled since 2010, according to research group Euromonitor International.
Euromonitor International puts India's retail market growing at 5.3 percent per annum 2016-2021.

Meanwhile one can find reports like these:
By 2020, India’s retail sector is expected to double to $1.1-1.2 trillion from $630 billion in 2015 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12%, said a joint report released by lobby group Ficci (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) and consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers.

State of Physics in Pakistan - from an interview from Pervez Hoodbhoy:
Tell us about a memorable incident during your career.:

I’ll tell you a sad one. Being in the world of high energy physics has taken me often to universities and laboratories around the world. Scientists come there from everywhere, many from India but almost none from Pakistan. There are hardly any Muslims, except a few now from Iran and Turkey. Once, while visiting CERN for a few months, an Indian and I accidentally crossed paths and started talking about a new experiment. He asked me where I was from, expecting that I would be from Delhi. When I said Islamabad, he said in surprise: I didn’t know that they do physics in Pakistan. Ouch, that hurt!

Beijing has signaled. Is Islamabad listening? - Raza Rumi

Though China has repeatedly blocked Indian moves to sanction JeM and its leadership, it has given a clear signal to Islamabad through BRICS declaration that support to non-state actors isn’t a viable long-term policy for Pakistan

Pakistan’s new Foreign Minister has been criticised by the usual suspects for his blunt remarks last week at Asia Society in New York. The minister put up a robust defence of Pakistan’s position on Afghanistan and highlighted the cost of war that Pakistan has suffered. Perhaps for the first time, a senior government minister admitted that the strategic assets of yesterday had turned into liabilities: “You cannot divorce history just to move forward. They [the militants] are a liability and it will take time for Pakistan to work its way through that.” He added, “Saeed, LeT, they are a liability, I accept it, but give us time to get rid of them, we don’t have the assets to deal with these liabilities.” Oh Amreeka - Humari Jholi Bhur Dey!

This admission is in line with the position that the government reportedly took in a national security meeting last year. Contents of this meeting were leaked and turned into a cause for civil-military rupture. The civilians, according to the infamous Dawn leaks, had warned the military and intelligence officials of Pakistan’s likely isolation if the policy towards jihadist proxies was not reviewed and realigned to the changing scenario.

Almost a year later, the BRICS group of countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) in their 2017 declaration expressed ‘concern on the security situation in the region and violence caused by the Taliban, ISIS... Al Qaeda and its affiliates, including Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement, Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, the Haqqani network, Lashkar-i-Taiba, Jaish-i-Mohammad, TTP and Hizbut Tahrir.’ The fact that China was part of this joint declaration should be a wake up call for Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

FM Asif’s position, therefore, is logical and he would not have made these comments without the tacit endorsement of the military establishment. Given the fragility of federal government and the uncertain future of the ruling party, Asif was certainly not taking a calculated risk.

While the increased indebtedness and dependence via CPEC are causes for concern, the Chinese influence is an opportunity for Pakistan to reimagine its national security doctrine; and discard what has evidently not worked for decades

Leaving the domestic squabbles aside, it should be clear that China — now viewed as a savior of sorts — has little patience for Islamist groups whether they are pitted against India or not. BRICS was the forum where China sensed an opportunity of signalling its discomfort to Pakistan’s powers-that-be with the latter’s reliance on proxy-groups to achieve foreign policy goals.

Beijing seeks avoidance of regional conflict, as continued conflict in Afghanistan and South Asia is inimical to its primary interests of economic development and trade integration. With the commencement of now $60 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor, the stakes for Beijing have increased manifold. Beijing views extremism and terrorism as a threat to its economic investments in Pakistan.

In 2013, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang stated that a goal of CPEC is to ‘wean populace away from fundamentalism.’ Beijing has been pushing Pakistan to distance from conflict with India, focus on economic development and trade to achieve stability. After all, China’s current place in the world in large measure is attributable to economic progress. This is what the architects of Pakistan’s security policy need to understand.

While the economic gains through CPEC are dominant in the mainstream public debates, it is clear that Pakistan’s security establishment views Chinese investment as a bulwark against the perennial Indian threat. This is not different from how we viewed our relationship with the United States since 1950s. Security cooperation with the US was primarily a means to build up the defence apparatus against India. Even though we hardly received any concrete support from the US in 1965 and 1971 wars, 1965 Chuck Yeager nearly got his "TUSH" blown off - but saved himself by running away when the IAF attacked the PAF Airbase where Chuck was based to help the Terroristanis in their "Air Battle" Again in 1971 Mad Dog Nixon sent the US Seventh Fleet but turned tail hearing about the Russians entering the Bay of Bengal/Arabian Sea. the strategic thinking did not change. Now that the cooling off with the US is underway, the Chinese are the replacement for quick cash-flows and security buffers.

What is rarely discussed in Pakistan is that the Sino-Indian trade is close to $100 billion dollars. Despite their competition for influence, the two countries are not going to turn their relationship into a toxic rivalry resembling the Cold War politics of blocs. BRICS was preceded by Sino-Indian standoff on the Bhutanese border. Pakistan’s security gurus and pundits on television could not conceal their excitement. They must have been disappointed when China diffused the Doklam border tension through diplomatic engagement.

Though China has repeatedly blocked Indian moves to sanction JeM and its leadership, it has given a clear signal to Islamabad through BRICS declaration that support to non-state actors isn’t a viable long-term policy for Pakistan. On September 22, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson in a press conference said: ‘The Chinese side hopes that Pakistan and India can strengthen communication and dialogue and properly resolve the issue. This is conducive to jointly upholding regional peace and stability.’

This should be an eye-opener for there is no support for revisionism that is a cornerstone of our foreign policy. China is not likely to take sides in any future Indian-Pakistan conflict and will do its best to avert that.

Pakistan’s security managers need to pay heed to signals emanating from Beijing before it’s too late. One hopes that there are discussions underway in GHQ of viewing the country as a trade-investment hub and managing the conflict with the ‘enemy.’ We have to live with India, Iran and Afghanistan; and it is not going to change. While the increased indebtedness and dependence via CPEC are causes for concern, the Chinese influence is an opportunity for Pakistan to reimagine its national security doctrine; and discard what has evidently not worked for decades.

Martiallaw!! Rangers surround court
AoA! A semi-soft/semi-hard coup is underway!!
Minister for Interior Ahsan Iqbal here on Monday was barred from entering the Accountability Court (AC) by the Rangers
A big contingent of the Rangers took control of the court premises without any legal permission and barred federal ministers, lawyers and media persons from the Judicial Complex. The Rangers commander didn’t appear before the interior minister when he called him
Ahsan Iqbal announced that he would resign from the office of interior minister as he could not work as a puppet. “We will not let anybody challenge the writ of the civilian government and there cannot be a state within the state,” he added.
This country cannot afford a third martial law and we must prevent it,” Saad Rafique said
Meanwhile, AC judge Muhammad Bashir, after the court proceedings, talking to the media said he passed no such order asking the Rangers to take over the judicial complex.
The AC judge, while talking to the media, said that he did not order for deployment of the Rangers but in the order he appreciated their deployment and said that due to them, security atmosphere at the court remained peaceful. :rotfl:
Aren't the Rangers under the interior ministry? To diss your own interior minister, that is a serious offense. Besides, the judge seems to be playing both sides. Something is afoot.

Imran says PML-N 'maligning army', destroying democracy
Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan on Monday accused PML-N’s government for 'targeting army' and destroying democracy. He was talking to media in response to Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal's statement after he was allegedly barred by Rangers from entering Judicial Complex during hearing of graft cases against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
He alleged Ahsan Iqbal for uttering ‘state within a state’ sentence with a motive to address the world
Yep! Immy the Dimmy is the man for the job (i.e., job of the interim PM when the state within the state takes over).
